"Dawn and I have been travelling for two days now. Nothing much has happened yet. Everything has been peaceful so far. I can only hope that things stay that way. Yesterday I asked Dawn if she regretted not killing Ace, and her answer still shakes me a little. She said that she does, that killing Ace would have been the right thing to do. I still don't think that killing Ace would have solved things. Ace would have left us alone for sure then, but her life would've been robbed from her. If raiders are so terrible, then surely we would've been no better than her if we stole her life from her?
Isn't that what raiders like to do the most, anyway? Take lives and rob people? Killing her would have put Dawn down on her level. Besides, Ace never seemed too awful. I think she'll leave us alone for good anyway, Dawn beat her and really put a scare into her, I think Ace understood that Dawn truly was going to kill her. I wonder what she's doing now? No more time for writing. Dawn says we must continue. I'll write more later on."
Dawn grabbed one of Kid's hands and helped him up onto a small hill as he slipped his small book and pencil into his right-side back pocket, Kid grabbing the bag of supplies and holding it with his other hand once it was free. Dawn smiled slightly as she said "You really like writing in that thing, huh?" Kid said "Well, it's nice, it l-let's me get my thoughts out, and any t-time I want to think about something f-from before, I can just turn t-to it's page." Dawn smiled a little more. "Sounds nice." She said. They began walking down the hill, the scorched earth around them hot from the sun's brutal and unrelenting rays. For as far as the eye could see in almost all directions, there was nothing but flat earth, sometimes a small pile of rocks or a gnarled leafless tree. But ahead, there were several hills in sight, the two of them helping one another pass the treacherous terrain. "I guess if you were around before the war you'd have been a journalist or something like that, hmm?" Dawn said. Kid raised an eyebrow at her. "What's a journalist?" He asked. Dawn said "Well, you know, someone that runs around and gets stories on things happening in the area for the newspaper they work for. Sometimes they take pictures, sometimes they really get into it and figure stuff out. But one thing they all do is write in the newspaper and make an article, if I'm not mistaken."
Kid smiled a little to himself. The idea of being a journalist sounded exciting. He looked to her and asked "If you were around before the war, what do you th-think you'd have done?" Dawn shrugged gently. "I don't know, actually. I don't think I've ever put much thought into it. Porn would still be nice, I heard doing it was a lot more exciting before the war, when everyone still had good filming equipment and a few less people were junkies. I really don't know. I'd have to think about that one for a bit, Kid." Kid nodded gently, looking to the ground for a moment while they kept walking. The bag of supplies secure in one of Kid's hands, Dawn's assault rifle hanging lazily in one of her's, they walked together, standing close. A few minutes passed as they walked along, the two of them sweating slightly, Dawn a little more than Kid due to her armour. "Tell me about Rister." Kid suddenly said. Dawn smiled and said "Well, it's more or less a little place, kind of like how Illust was. It's not as peaceful as Illust, but it's not as chaotic as New Reno. My friend, Julian, runs the place along with this other guy, Curtis."
Dawn smiled more, shaking her head gently as she said "I wonder how they're going to react when they see me again. Heh, might even throw me a little welcoming party. I helped them take over the town, after all." Kid looked over to her. "It s-sounds like you've helped a lot of people." Dawn looked over to him with a smile. "Kid, don't get me wrong, I may kill stuff and generally do stuff that others may frown upon, but my heart isn't covered in ice. I do, in fact, help people with their problems. Only if I like them, though. If I don't, I couldn't care less about the shit going on in their life." "What if helping someone m-meant killing someone else?" Kid asked. Dawn shrugged gently and said "If I liked the person asking for the favour and the other person genuinely wronged the person I liked, then sure. But if the other person didn't do anything wrong or if the person I like just wanted to kill them over something stupid, then I wouldn't get into it."
Kid nodded gently, looking to the ground for a moment again. "Favours are a powerful thing, Kid. They can really help you out in the wasteland. Help someone when they need it, you never know when you'll need help and they'll be in a position to help you. That said, I don't help people just to expect something in return. I've helped plenty of people without expecting anything in return. Like, for example...You." Kid raised an eyebrow, looking over to Dawn. Dawn smiled and looked over to him. "Remember when we first met, when I saved you from that slaver? I offered to bring you to where there was food and water, Illust, to be precise. I never expected to get anything in return, I was just helping you. I was helping a cute kid that looked like he was lost and hungry." Kid smiled a little, looking off to the side. Dawn smiled and said "The Wrights, I helped them, but I never really expected anything in return. They were a crime family, I could've asked for a million different things and I probably would've gotten most of them, but I never did, I never asked for a single thing. I think that made the old leader, Orville, respect me. He saw that I was independent and didn't need to ask for help. I think it made him grow to like me."
Kid nodded slightly, slowly losing his smile. The two of them began to climb another hill, helping one another past it's tricky steps and unstable rocks. When they got to the top, Dawn smiled and said "Anyway, back to Rister...The place is nothing really fancy, no casinos or anything like New Reno, just normal houses and a few apartment buildings. I think you'll like it though. I crash with Julian and Curtis whenever I'm passing through town, they always hook me up with a place to stay, so we'll be able to relax for a bit in privacy." Kid smiled gently, his cheeks growing a bit red from blush from the mention of being in privacy and alone with Dawn. They kept walking, heading off into the distance still, the sun constantly beating down on their bodies with a vengeance.
"Dawn and I have been walking for four days now. She says it will take about four or five more before we reach Rister. Dawn says her friends in Rister will be able to supply us with some good equipment. In the bag of supplies there was quite a bit of ammo for both Dawn's assault rifle and my pistol, plus some ammo for her other gun she had before her assault rifle, her mp5. I wonder where that went? Dawn doesn't have it anymore, so the ammo is kind of useless...
Since we have plenty of ammo, Dawn's been teaching me how to shoot, how to hold my pistol right and how to aim so I can actually hit things. The shots we fired attracted a few pig rats and dogs. Dawn shot most of them, telling me to shoot, too. I missed a lot, but I did manage to hit a few of them when they got close, something I'm kind of proud of. Dawn says that the animals of the wasteland aren't friendly, so if I see one, I should shoot first and leave the corpse where it falls, unless I'm hungry. She says that most animals can be used as food."
Kid suddenly stopped writing in his journal, looking up from the book with narrow eyes. He thought he had heard something. The sky was dark, it was the night of the fourth day of their trip. Kid had been barely able to see the words he was writing, but he had been managing. Dawn was relaxing on the ground on a thin blanket near him, in the dark. "Did you hear that?" Kid asked, looking to her. Dawn nodded gently, holding her assault rifle across her chest. "I did." She said. A soft hissing came out on the air. Dawn smirked. "Sounds like a gecko." Kid looked at her curiously. "Gecko?" He repeated softly. Dawn nodded. "Only question is whether it's a silver, a golden, or a fire gecko. Better not be a fire gecko, I don't need a flamed-up suit of armour any more than the next guy." Kid gulped slightly. "Fire gecko?" He repeated. Dawn nodded.
A scurrying sounded nearby. It was too dark to see it. Dawn smiled. "I think it's a silver gecko, yeah, that's what it sounds like. They're not too tough. I could snap it's neck with my own hands." Something suddenly started to charge towards Kid. Kid raised up his pistol and pulled the trigger, the flash of the muzzle lighting up the creature for a moment. Kid had barely seen it, but what he had seen looked frightening enough. A splash of red blood hit his pants, the creature falling down on his legs, but it wasn't dead yet. It hissed softly, shaking around and making a strange sound, almost like a high-pitched squeal. Dawn walked over to it and grabbed it in her arms, leaving her assault rifle on the ground. The creature hissed again softly before a loud crunching sounded out. Dawn released it, sighing as she said "There, it's dead. No biggie. Too bad I don't know how to skin these things, otherwise we could sell it's pelt for some caps."
Kid's eyes adjusted more to the darkness, his eyes been less adjusted due to his writing moments before. It looked like a pre-war lizard, only much, much bigger. The majority of it's body was covered in sleek, silver scales, aside from the small fins that stuck out from the sides of it's head, which were viridian in colour. It's long, thin, pink tongue hung out of it's mouth slightly. It's eyes were large and bulged out of it's head slightly, being deep yellow in colour along with black vertical slits for pupils. It had a long and thick silver tail, hanging limply down from it's backside. It looked like it had walked on it's two legs without needing support from it's two front arms. A small wound was in it's right shoulder, it's blood leaking down it's body slowly, it being obvious that Kid had shot it there. It's neck was a little bruised, some of it's scales crushed in on themselves slightly, it's head twisted to the side, Dawn having broken it's neck. It looked to be about the same height as a dog, but only about as thin and wide as Kid himself, unless you included it's tail, in which case it might have even been a bit longer than a dog.
Kid scrambled away from it, Dawn laughing gently. "Relax, it's dead. Probably thought you were a nice little snack it could have. Good thing it was a silver gecko, otherwise I might have needed to shoot it off of you. Golden geckos don't mess around when it comes to food. A fire gecko probably would've just sprayed fire at you. Those nasty little buggers pretty much have flamethrowers built into their mouths, it's intense." Kid sighed softly, closing his eyes and raising a hand to his face, groaning gently with a bit of relief as he lay back on the ground. Dawn smiled and examined it's body. "I'm surprised you got a shot at it, it's not exactly bright out here and it was coming for you sort of quickly. I guess all that practising is starting to pay off, huh?" Kid chuckled softly. "I guess." He said. Dawn lay down on the blanket, not getting out of her armour, smiling as she said "Come over here and lie on the blanket with me, we've done enough travelling for today, it's time to sleep." Kid smiled and got closer to her, the two of them holding one another close with smiling faces, slipping off to sleep.
"Ho hoh, look what we have here, mates!" Someone said, waking Dawn up. She kept her eyes closed, listening as what sounded like three men walked over to them. Dawn's right arm around Kid, her left hand gripping her assault rifle, she waited for them to get closer. "Cut their throats and take the bag of supplies. As they say, "You snooze, you lose", am I right, guys?" Dawn bolted up, Kid hitting the ground gently as she rushed to get up, startling him into waking. Dawn gripped her assault rifle tight like a baseball bat, swinging it to the side and cracking it into the nearest man's face, knocking him to the side and to the ground. "Fuck, they're awake!" One said. Another held up a submachine gun, a Scorpio. "Kill them!" He said.
Dawn flipped her assault rifle around in her hands, holding it properly with a hand on the pistol grip and another along the handguard of the barrel. She immediately squeezed the trigger a few times, firing several shots into another nearby man. The one that had the submachine gun pointed it at Dawn, Dawn turning to him and felling him with another spraying of bullets. The one that Dawn had knocked down began to get up, Kid pulling out his pistol and pointing it at the man. The man didn't seem afraid, gritting his teeth at him, pulling out a sawed-off shotgun. Dawn noticed that Kid was hesitating, pointing her assault rifle at the man and firing four shots into him, the man falling to the ground dead before he could let off a single shot. Dawn didn't seem angry with Kid, but she stepped closer to him, staring him in the eyes. Kid looked back into her eyes, lowering his pistol.
The two of them totally ignored the bodies of the slain assailants. Dawn's face softened as she worriedly saying "Kid, if you hesitate when dealing with these types of people, you could end up dead...I don't want you getting hurt...You have to shoot these people to stop them, you don't seem to understand that you could get hurt, they really will kill you if you give them the chance!..." Kid looked down to the ground sadly from her words. Dawn said "...Sorry if my words sounded harsh...But Kid, you're going to have to learn how to defend yourself properly, you're going to have to learn how to look someone in the eyes and shoot them down if you have to, that's how everyone and everything works out here..." She smiled a little and raised a hand to his face, touching his chin gently and raising his face so his eyes would meet her's. "I might not be around forever Kid, you're going to have to learn how to protect yourself...Please understand..."
Kid only seemed to grow sadder from her words. Tears even began to fill his eyes, Kid gritting his teeth and turning from her. Dawn felt sadness rise in her from his reaction. "Kid, that doesn't mean I'm going to die tomorrow or anything, but...Well, "natural causes" isn't exactly the leading cause of death out here...It's reality, chances are somewhere, someday, someone's going to get the upper hand and kill me, it's the cycle of things out here." Kid's shoulders shook gently, Dawn hearing a soft sob leaving him. Dawn stepped closer to him and wrapped her arms around him from behind, holding her hands together on his chest. She kissed the back of his head, softly saying "It's okay...I'm not planning on dying any time soon...I'll be around for a while yet...I'm only nineteen, I have a while to go before the reaper says my time is up...And trust me, I don't think anyone's going to get the upper hand on me any time soon, heh...A combination of strong friends, advanced equipment, proper training, and a good ol' will to live will probably keep me from falling to anyone's bullets for a while to come..."
Kid began to calm down slightly. She was right, she was always right. He had to learn how to defend himself properly. Back when Dawn was attacked by the pig rat just outside of Illust, Kid had frozen up with Dawn's hunting rifle, he hesitated for too long, Dawn had nearly been killed. He had told himself that he'd never let something like that happen again, but he hadn't really changed too much since then. He shut his eyes and forced his stinging tears to stop coming. He had to be strong, not just for Dawn, but for himself, as well. "You'll t-teach me stuff...Right?..." He asked quietly. Dawn smiled and gave him another kiss on the back of his head. "That's what I've been trying to do this whole time, teach you stuff so you can survive out here. But yes, whatever you want to know about, I can teach you." Kid turned to face her, Dawn releasing him. Kid looked up into her face. Dawn smiled at him soothingly. "Baby, it's okay...I'm here..." She said softly, placing her hands on his shoulders softly. Kid smiled softly and closed his eyes, coming closer to her for a hug, Dawn smiling more and hugging him back, the two of them embracing in silence.
"Dawn and I haven't gone anywhere for the whole day today. She spent the day teaching me how to shoot right, and even though she says it's going to take a lot longer before I get really good, that at least it was a start. She set up the bodies of the three men, who Dawn said looked like raiders, along with the body of the silver gecko from last night. I spent all day firing shots at them. I've learned how to properly shoot, you can't just point the gun at your target and fire, you actually have to look down the barrel and angle your gun right, or else you won't hit them, chances are you'll probably shoot over them. Dawn took the guns the raiders had and put them in our supply bag. She says that tomorrow we'll keep travelling, that we're only three or so days from Rister. Dawn said she was impressed by a few of the shots I made. I have to say, it made me feel a little proud to have her impressed. Time to sleep again, we're getting up early to travel more tomorrow."
Dawn and Kid walked along a flat plain, the sun once more glaring at them, almost like an angry parent down to two of it's disobedient children. They had been walking in silence for most of the day, simply heading straight. Kid had something on his mind, something he wanted to ask Dawn. He finally mustered up enough courage to ask her. "Hey...Dawn?..." Kid said, looking over to her. Dawn looked at him. "Mmm?" She mumbled slightly. He looked forward again as he slowly said "Well...Um...You know me and you...Whatever we are...We've been with each other f-for a while...We've made love, fucked, whatever you want t-to call it..." Dawn smiled a little and raised an eyebrow curiously, saying "Yeah, so?" Kid slowly said "Um...I was just wondering...Well...What it's l-like with you and me...Have...Have you ever been like th-that...With someone else?..."
Dawn kept looking at him curiously. He said "I know you've slept with other people....That's fine, that's what you d-do in porn, after all...But...You said you had never really made l-love before me...You've h-helped me without expecting anything in return....You protect me....You want to t-teach me how to survive....I'm just wondering...Have you ever b-been like this with anyone else?..." Dawn lost her smile, looking forward. It took her a moment to respond. "...No..." She finally said. She smiled a little more and looked over to him. "You're the only one I've been like this with...You're special." Kid smiled a little. He suddenly felt something touch his hand. He looked down to his left, to his hand. Dawn's hand was wrapped around his, holding his hand. The armour plates of her arm glinted slightly in the sun, her black-gloved fingers squeezing down on him lightly for a moment. Kid looked up to her face and smiled a little. Dawn smiled back at him. They both looked forward again, walking off into the horizon.
"Rister is finally in view. It's about as big as Illust was, but it has a few big buildings to it, Illust was nothing but small houses. Dawn's getting more and more excited the closer and closer we get to it. She says that we'll relax there for a bit before maybe going off to see a new town. She was warning me however, saying that Rister was filled with all types of people, saying that some people weren't even humans. I asked her what she meant. She said that Rister was a "melting-pot" of different peoples, that there were people known as ghouls, people known as super mutants, people known as reavers, even robots, all types of people and things. She said that after a town named Broken Hills closed down, most of the people there went to Rister. Some went to other towns, but most of the super mutant population, along with some ghouls and other people, went to Rister.
Rister already had normal people there apparently, but that the newcomers were welcomed with open arms, the town flourishing after that. I asked Dawn what a "ghoul" and what a "super mutant" was, along with what a "reaver" was. Dawn said that it was hard to explain, and that I'd be better off just seeing them for myself. She warned me that they might be frightening to look at, especially the ghouls, but that they were people like myself and like her and that they had feelings, even the robots had personalities and reacted to stuff, so that I should try to react calmly when I see them for the first time. I promised that I'd try not to react badly. How could these people look if Dawn feels the need to warn me about them? Dawn doesn't want to rest anymore, she wants to move straight for Rister. She says we'll reach it by nightfall if we hurry."
Far across the wasteland, Ace stood in a dark house, her arm locked around a man's neck from behind, a P220 Sig Sauer pistol pointed to the side of his head as she held him close as a hostage. Two other men stood in the room with her, a standing table between Ace and the other two men in the room. One man was unarmed while the other was armed with a Calico Liberty 100, a submachine gun that looked a bit like a pistol but held enough bullets to make someone think that it was a small assault rifle. A large black box sat in one corner of the room, it being a locked safe. Ace's eyes shot back and forth between the two men in front of her. "Unlock it!" She muttered warningly. The unarmed man nodded and knelt down by the safe, saying "Just don't hurt him, okay?" The other man stared at Ace with contempt, curling his upper lip slightly in a snarl. "You're never going to get out of here, raider scum."
Ace gritted her teeth and raised up her pistol, quickly smashing it down in her hostage's temple, earning a shout of pain from the hostage as the handle connected with the side of his head. "Put your fucking gun down or I'll blow this whiny little douche away!" She said angrily. "C'mon, just do what she says, man...I'm bleeding, here..." The hostage said, a cut having opened on his temple from Ace's strike, dripping down his cheek slightly. The man gritted his teeth angrily as he slowly began to lower his gun to the floor. "Kick it away." Ace said darkly, cocking back the hammer of her pistol threateningly. The man's face was full of restrained fury as he lightly kicked the gun, sliding it across the floor to the side, moving it equally far from himself and from Ace. A hard clacking sounded out from the safe, the door opening a few centimeters. The unarmed man said "There...It's open...Now let him go!"
Ace smirked slightly. She quickly pointed her gun forwards, firing a shot into the chest of the man that had kicked away his gun, the man falling backwards to the ground in death. The hostage tried grabbing Ace's gun, Ace tightening her grip on the man's throat, depriving him of air roughly. She quickly shot the unarmed man by the safe several times and killing him before pushing the hostage forwards and away from her. She pointed the gun at the man, a wrathful face to her as he turned and began to plead for mercy. She quickly pulled the trigger multiple times, emptying the clip into the last remaining man, killing him quickly. The slide of her gun pushed itself back, showing that it was empty, smoke lightly drifting through the barrel and wafting out the end. Ace glared at the three bodies in the room, walking over to the safe and kneeling down in front of it. She grabbed the door and slowly pulled it open. Her eyes widened slightly at what she saw within, a large grin crossing her. She chuckled softly, reaching her hands inside, feeling the items she saw. She softly murmured a single word: "Perfect..."
Marv was craving someone to eat once again. He was sweating slightly, but not entirely from the sun, from his slowly growing craving for human flesh. He still held Heather's hand, Heather sweating gently as well. Redding was in view, they were only a kilometer or so from the town. Within twenty minute or so, they reached the town, the two of them trudging into the town tiredly. The town was made up of several buildings and many people, the two of them slipping into the town almost unnoticed. The main street had a gambling hall to it along with a saloon, entitled "The Malamute Saloon". The very first words to pop into Marv's head were "...What in the fuck is a "malamute"?" If it wasn't for the neon sign of what appeared to be a dog over the saloon's sign, Marv never would have guessed what it was. Marv and Heather walked into a nearby dark alley, Marv letting out a sigh and crumpling down to the ground, rolling over onto his back just as Heather collapsed upon him, the two of them breathing a bit heavily as they cooled off in the shade of the buildings on either side of them. Heather said "We're finally here!..."
Marv smiled lightly and patted her back. "Yup, heh heh...Finally..." Heather smiled a little, relaxing on him and catching her breath. Marv sat up a few minutes later, Heathing sitting up in his lap, Marv saying "Heather, stay here, I...I have to go out and do something...Just relax here, I shouldn't take long..." Heather grabbed him tight and said "No, I don't want to be alone, someone will hurt me!" Marv looked her in the eyes calmly. "Heather, nobody will hurt you, this is an okay town, it's-" Heather cut him off by crying out "No!! I don't want to be alone! Please, Marv! Nothing can hurt me while I'm with you...Please don't leave me!!" Her face showed that she was starting to work into a panic. Marv placed his hands on her tiny shoulders. "Heather, take a breath, relax. Calm down...You don't want to see what I'm going out to do..." Heather relaxed a little, looking around for a few moments before quietly asking "Are you going to eat someone?..." Marv looked around for a moment too, seeing nobody around. He nodded gently.
Heather smiled a little and softly said "That's not such a big deal, I watched you eat those guys in the metro station, it wasn't too nasty!" Marv said "Heather...I still don't want you coming along...It wouldn't be right for you to see that stuff, even if you think it's not too bad..." Heather's face grew sad. "Marv, I'm really hungry and-" Marv's eyes grew wide. "No!" He said forcefully, nearly yelling at her. "Absolutely not!" He commanded. Heather's eyes grew sad, her bottom lip trembling slightly as she looked away from his eyes. Marv immediately began to regret his words, gently saying "Heather, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to raise my voice...But you can't turn into what I am...I don't want you doing the things I do, not that...I do it because I feel the need to, some people are forced to do it because they have to eat to survive, but I do it because...I don't know...I think it's just how I feel. Normal food doesn't taste good to me, when I get hungry I don't feel like eating normal stuff, I want to...I want to eat someone, which isn't right...That's not how we're supposed to work, but it's not like I can fix myself..."
Heather still had tears in her eyes as she pouted a little and said "If you can eat people, so can I!" Marv was about to speak again when Heather looked into his eyes, trying to look serious and mad, but succeeding only in coming across as rather cute. "End of story!" She said in a forceful manner. Marv paused for a moment before trying to speak, Heather quickly raising her little hands to his mouth, covering his mouth and stopping him from speaking. "No! Stop! The end means the end! No more!" She said. Marv half-closed his eyes as Heather held her hands to him for a few moments longer before slowly lowering them. He slowly said "Well...You do realize that it probably won't taste right to you....But...Well...I could try to cook it...It'd probably taste like brahmin meat, then...Eh...I don't know...No, I still think you should have some normal food." Heather gripped Marv tight in a hug as she pleadingly said "Maaaarv, pleeeease! I'm so hungry! I don't care what I eat, eating someone else couldn't be so bad!"
Marv sighed through his nose. He had no caps to buy normal food, anyways. He wasn't willing to start a huge problem in the town by killing someone to steal their food. He sighed gently, giving in. "Fine...But at least let me cook it for you...Eating it raw definitely won't taste good for you, but cooking it might make it okay...I could roast your share over a fire or something, I don't know..." Heather grinned happily and squeezed him tight in her hug, saying "Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!!" Marv smiled a little, but inside he still felt it was a bad idea. He stood up and began to wonder as to who he would dispatch for their meal. It'd have to be someone isolated and away from most people, he didn't want anyone to find the body or what was left of it for a while. Heather reached up and took one of his hands with a cheerful smile, Marv smiling back at her a little. The two of them left the alleyway, heading out into the street for only a moment before Marv thought "Wait, what if there's a bum or homeless person in the alleyways? That would be perfect!" He stopped and turned around, explaining his thoughts to the curious Heather. She smiled more and nodded quickly, thinking that his idea was good. They headed deeper into the alley, a labyrinth of passageways up ahead, the two of them disappearing from sight rather quickly as they took a few turns.
