Chapter Fifteen: The Ice Cream Shop
"There used to be a time when you said I was a meanie." The silver haired father to be as he glanced over at the brunet carrying his unborn child, "Do you remember the day we met and I pushed you into a mud puddle?"
Sora snickered at that, leaning back in the leather passenger side seat of his lover's car, "Yeah, I remember that." He replied, pouting at Riku as he drove them to the ice cream parlor, "It was a mean thing to do."
"It was." Agreed Riku with a chuckle, "But, I apologized a hundred times." He pointed out, his lips curling into a smirk, "After my mom made me, of course."
"Oh ha ha." Sora said sarcastically, sticking out his tongue after.
They had been friends ever since. Always inseparable. Attached at the hip. That is, until their friendship grew into something they both cherished and revered.
Choosing to ignore the fact that Sora had stuck out his tongue (a bad habit he had had since child hood that Riku found a delightful way to combat when they started dating), he replied, "I even gave you flowers, remember." Not real ones, but flowers that he had drawn himself.
"I still have that picture." Sora said after a moment, a fond smile stretching across his face as he remembered all the things he had saved that he had gotten from Riku.
"You do?" Riku asked in surprise, slowing to a stop in front of a red light, "Where? I haven't seen it in your room."
"It's in a special folder with every other picture you've given me." Sora replied, giving his lover a sweet smile.
"You got it from your house, right?" Riku asked, pressing the gas as the light turned green once again, "Cause, I'd like to see it, if you have it."
"It was one of the first things I grabbed." The brunet replied as they drove along the main road on the island, "If I left it, they would have destroyed it."
"That doesn't surprise me." Riku murmured, glancing over at his lover, reaching out for his hand. It'd definitely be interesting to see his artwork laid out in a time line of sorts, seeing how it had progressed from his childish drawings to where it now stood today.
Sora gave his lover's hand a light squeeze, "I love you." He murmured, bringing the hand he held to his lips to press a chaste kiss to it.
The silver haired teenager stole another glance from his lover, smiling softly, "I love you." He replied softly, "But, you'd better stop being so sweet before I'm forced to pull over and ravish you."
--- --- ---
Sora, being the optimist he is, was rarely ever upset or angry. He always seemed to find the brighter side of things. Which was quite opposite to Riku, whom always saw the reasonable doubts in everything. But, in the past few months Riku had seen Sora upset more times than he'd care to admit. Luckily, the simplest things always seemed to cheer him up, like a bar of his favorite ice cream.
Pulling into the local ice cream parlor and turning into a parking space, Riku turned to his lover after turning the car off, "If you ever ask for pickles with your ice cream...you'll be getting it yourself, understood. Because, that's just wrong. On so many levels."
A pout crossed the little brunet's face even though he knew his lover was only teasing him, "I wasn't even thinking about pickles and ice cream." He pointed out, sticking his tongue out at his lover.
“Well, just in care you ever do, you’ve been duly warned.” The silver haired boy replied, leaning forward to press a kiss to those pouting lips softly, “I’ll still love you no matter what.”
"Good to know," Sora commented with a smile as he got out of the car. "I want an ice cream sundae...no, wait, a bar of sea salt ice cream...no, no...I want a vanilla cone, yeah!"
Again chuckling to himself, Riku shook his head at Sora's predictable undecidedness. "Remember Sora, be careful what you choose. It may be a long time before we're able to come back here."
Sora pouted, "Oh, don't remind me." He whined before letting out a heavy sigh, "Alright, I want a sea-salt ice cream bar and a gallon tub of chocolate ice cream to take home."
Riku raised one elegant silver eyebrow at Sora in amusement. "If you eat that much ice cream now you're going to get sick."
"I'm not going to eat all that ice cream in one night... though, the idea is tempting, but I really don't want to get sick. I've been sick enough this past month to last a lifetime," Sora pointed out.
"Too true," Riku answered. He had been there for his lover as much as he could, rubbing the younger boy's back while he was he hunched over the toilet or getting him some tea to calm him stomach. "It'll all be worth it in the end," he beamed, trying to imagine who their child would take after.
Sora nodded, “It sure will be.” He agreed, smiling at his lover. It didn't matter to him who their child would take after, he was just curious as to what a mix of Riku and him would look and act like.
As Riku was about to reach for the door, the silver haired spotted a bunch of their friends inside and he paused, glancing over at Sora. "Wakka and Tidus are in there. I haven't seen them since... we came out." He really had no idea how they had taken the news. "Maybe we should come back after dinner? Or better yet, I could come home for lunch and take you?"
Sora frowned lightly, “Well, Kairi said the hadn't taken it so bad.” He pointed out gently, “We really can't avoid them forever.”
That and he wanted his ice cream now there wasn’t no waiting involved. It was one of those craving things.
"I can," Riku nodded, not all that thrilled at the prospect of a possible confrontation. Especially since he and Wakka had already been on shaky terms before the news about him and Sora had come out. Riku pulled out his wallet and handed some munny over to Sora. "You get what you want and I'll wait by the fountain, all right?"
Sora stared at his lover in shock, “Are you serious?” He asked, taking the munny handed to him before rolling his eyes, heaving a sigh, “You know what, fine, I’ll go in there and prove to you that they’re perfectly okay with us!”
“Sora...” Riku said with as much patience as he could muster at the moment. Now how to explain this... “If it’s you, anyone will be okay with anything you do. Now me, on the other hand, are you forgetting that most of the town sees my brother and myself as the resident troublemakers and delinquents?” He pointed out, holding up his hand to quiet Sora when the boy opened his mouth to object, “You know that Wakka and I have had trouble getting along lately as it is without him thinking that I’ve tainted you.”
Sora sighed once more, still not quite believing the behavior of his lover, “If you don’t want to go in there, it’s fine.” He replied, “But, I want my ice cream. This is kind of a no waiting type of thing.”
"I know," Riku nodded. "And if you really want me to go in with you, I will. I just can't guarantee that things might not come to blows..."
“You have too little faith in people.” Sora said, looking over at his lover, “Not everyone hates you like you think.”
“Sora, I don’t think everyone hates me, it’s just that most people really do.” Riku said, cupping his brunet’s cheek as he spoke, “You’re just to kind to see it.”
“You think our best friend hates you, Riku. Kairi; whose been our friend for years, whose demanding to be the baby’s godmother.” Sora pointed out, “Don’t judge a person before you know their feelings.”
Riku sighed, his shoulders dropping slightly as his lover's expression grew troubled. Sora always knew how to make him feel guilty whether he was conscious of it or not. He was not a coward. He just didn't want to make an already bad situation worse. "Fine, let's go," he said, opening the door for the brunet.
“Are you sure?” Sora asked, frowning as he walked through the door. He seriously didn't want Riku to get hurt because he knew his lover was unable to run from a fight once provoked.
Riku nodded as he followed Sora. "I'd never be able to forgive myself if something bad happened to you."
Sora glanced back at his lover, “It's the same thing with me Riku. I hate seeing you get hurt, physically or mentally.”
"I'm not so much worried about a few punches as I am about ruining your reputation any more than I already have," Riku whispered, sneaking glances at the people around them, wary of their reactions to their presence. "And quite honestly, I hadn't expected this place to be so crowded so close to dinner time. That's why I suggested coming here now."
“Reputation...what reputation? The one that says I’m a sinner in a relationship condemned to hell while carrying an abomination to God?” Sora replied flatly, “It’s to late to care about reputations.”
"You should be," Riku shot back almost scandalized by Sora's reply. Sora had always been adored by everyone because he was such a nice, good boy. Now that damn near everyone knew that he gotten involved with someone like Riku, the townsfolk just might turn against him and that really worried Riku. Kept him up at night thinking.
“Look, I chose to be this way. I chose to be with you and even if I didn’t choose to have a baby with you, it happened. But, I chose to keep it.” Sora said, walking into the ice cream shop, “It could be a lot worse, you know.”
"Worse how?" Riku asked, standing closer to Sora, still wary about the other people in the ice cream shop. At least Tidus and Wakka hadn't seemed to notice them yet, as involved in an apparently heated discussion as they were.
Sora opened his mouth to answer before closing it and frowning, “I'm sure there's a way it could be worse...” He muttered under his breath as the cashier cast the pair a look, “Oh! I could be carrying twins!” He replied, turning to look at his lover.
"Keep it down!" Riku hissed, clamping a hand over Sora's mouth. "Don't just blurt things out like that in public. Are you trying to jinx us? We're going to have our hands full with one, I couldn't imagine what it would be like with two."
Sora giggled madly behind Riku's hand before pushing it off of his face, “Hey, you're the one that said you'd like to have a boy and a girl.” He pointed out, sticking out his tongue.
"Not at the same time!" Looking away, Riku took a deep breath to calm his rattled nerves, "And, what'd I tell you about sticking out your tongue?" He added after a moment, leaning down to Sora's ear.
The brunet blinked, "...Not to?" He replied, glancing over his shoulder.
Riku shook his head, a smirk appearing on his face, "No, I said don't stick it out unless you intend on using it." He murmured in the other's ear, his arms wrapping around the brunet's waist.
Even though PDA's still weren't exactly accepted amount the rest of the population of the islands, it sure felt nice to act like they were more than just friends. Something that they had been condemned too for so long.
Sora flushed, "Pervert." He returned, stepping up to the counter before looking over his shoulder, "Did you want anything?" He asked.
"Just you," Riku said softly, sheepishly. "But since I'll have to wait for that, I'll take a cone of cookies and cream."
"See? Pervert." Sora said, shaking his head, though he had a grin on his face. The brunet looked up at the cashier, giving him a wide beaming smile like nothing was out of place or odd, "I'd like a bar of sea-salt ice cream, a cookies and cream cone, and a gallon tub of chocolate ice cream."
"Well, you asked," Riku chuckled, reaching around Sora to hand him some more munny to cover for his ice cream as well.
Sora grinned, taking the munny before placing it on the counter, “That I did.”
"I wish the cashier would stop looking at us funny," Riku commented, uncomfortable with the person's staring. He wished they would just hurry so they could leave.
Sora nodded in agreement, “If they're not careful, I'll give them something to gawk at.” He muttered under his breath.
"Hey, that's my line," Riku told Sora, barely able to keep from laughing at the statement. And he had been thinking exactly the same thing. "Shame on you Sora."
The brunet gave a shrug, giving the uncomfortable cashier a smile as he pain for their ice cream, "What can I say?" He replied, glancing over his shoulder at his aquamarine eyed lover, "You're rubbing off on me."
--- --- ---
"That was good." Sora said, holding the empty stick of his ice cream bar as he looked over at his silver haired lover who was working on his crispy waffle cone.
"Well, you'd better enjoy it now...who knows when you'll be able to have it again." Riku replied in a matter of factly tone, "It's only made on the island."
The brunet pouted, "Don't remind me!" He said, wrapping the popsicle stick in a napkin before setting it on the table the couple sat at, "Maybe I should've gotten a box of sea-salt bars instead of the gallon of chocolate ice cream."
Riku chuckled, "Do you want a box?" He asked, finishing off the last of his cone before giving his lover a fond smile.
"If it's not too much..." Sora replied, smiling innocently.
"Nothings too much for you." Riku replied, scooting out of the booth, pulling out his wallet after standing.
“Well, haven't seen you two in ages!”
Sora blinked, jumping in surprise, wiping his head around, "Tidus!"
The silver haired Riku heaved a sigh, running a hand through his hair before sitting down again as the blond haired blitz ball player made his way over to their table. He had rather hoped he could escape a confrontation with him and Wakka. Speaking of the devil...
"Yo, long time no see, ya?" Wakka asked with a broad smile, coming up next to Tidus, watching Riku warily out of the corner of his eyes, “You been avoidin’ us?”
Tidus nodded in agreement, “Yeah, dude, you totally shunned us when this whole thing started.” He said before a smirk came over his face, “You’re the only decent blitz player on the island.”
The said offended redhead turned toward the blond with an almost lethal glare. Everybody knew that the only other person on the island who could possibly be better at blitz ball was Riku-- if he put his mind too it and played seriously that is. "Mebbe he was avoidin' you," Wakka said, jabbing Tidus in the chest with a finger.
Tidus snorted, “Oh please.” He said, waving the boy off, “And, Sora, why haven't I seen you! You haven't been in school or church!”
Sora laughed nervously, “I...ah...quit school?” He said, scratching his head sheepishly, “Yazoo is going to tutor me.”
"You what?" Wakka blurted out, shocked, staring at Sora. "Why?"
“Come on, Sora, we should be going,” Riku interjected, standing once more as he fought to keep his voice calm.
Sora blinked, a little taken back, “No...Riku, I thought we talked about this?” He said before turning back to Wakka, “You didn’t hear by now? Kairi hasn’t told you? You didn’t hear my mother trying to bring about the apocalypse?”
"Fine, I'll be outside then," Riku snapped, turning to push the door open a little harder than he had intended too. Yeah, so they hadn't said anything yet, but Riku could feel Wakka's eyes on him and it would be a matter of time.
Wakka snorted. "Under stress much, that one?" he asked, jerking his thumb in Riku's direction.
Sora sighed softly, “He is.” He said, “But, that's completely understandable, he blames everything on himself, no matter what I try to tell him.”
Tidus patted the brunet on the shoulder, “Riku's always been that way, I'm sure once the baby comes he'll have a complete 360.”
"It's true then?" Wakka asked, wide eyed. "You really are pre... uh... having a baby?"
Sora nodded, “Yup, I'm almost at two months, I'll find out for sure tomorrow.” He said with a nod, his hands subconsciously rubbed his abdomen.
Tidus snickered, “That's so cute..” He said before nudging his red headed friend, “See, I told you he was girly.”
Sora twitched, “Shut it you.”
"I already knew that," Wakka sighed, rolling his eyes at Tidus' comment. He looked out through the glass window to where Riku say at the fountain. "Does... he think I hate him?"
“I think he thinks...that everyone hates him in one form or another.” Sora said, turning to look out the window to look at his lover “I know...that most people disapprove...but, that doesn't mean everyone does.” He asked, his voice helpless, “Right?”
Tidus held his hands up, “I have no problem with it, as I told Kairi. We were just waiting for it to happen.”
"I'm fine. I was just... shocked at first, ya know? I mean, I always thought that Riku and Kairi would..." Wakka sighed. He knew he should have cleared things up with Riku a long time ago, but he had just never gotten the chance to do so. "Tell 'im I'm all right with two being together, k?"
Sora nodded, grinning brightly, “Will do!” He said, grabbing the door to the shop, “You two should come by sometime, hopefully before Riku and I leave.”
Tidus blinked, “Leave?” He said, raising an eyebrow.
Sora nodded once more, “It's not exactly legal for us to get married here, you know.”
“Married?!” Tidus said, shocked. But, he got over it quickly, grinning, “Bachelor party!” He said, before blinking, “Wait...how does that work if your both boys...?”
With a sigh, Wakka elbowed Tidus in the side. Leave it to the blond to immediately think of a party at a time like this. "Sora can't have no drinking party you nitwit. He's with child!"
Tidus snorted again, “Psh, Sora can have a baby shower. I'm sure Kairi will plan one for him anyway.” He said, “Riku can't get married until he has a Bachelor Party...damnit, I won't allow it!” He said.
Sora rolled his eyes, “You just want another reason to get drunk and do something stupid like steal a cop car naked.” He said before sliding out of the booth, standing in front of his two friends.
Tidus flushed, “That was a one time thing, Sora!” He muttered, scratching the back of his neck sheepishly as the trio made their way outside and towards the fountain Riku had been standing by.
"Yeah right, he was grounded for months after that!!" Wakka exclaimed. Though...it did sound like a lot of fun having a party for Riku. Maybe then he could mend whatever was broken in their friendship before they left. "How long til ya leave?"
"Could you keep it down a little? I don't think they heard you in the next town," Riku said, approaching the group after overhearing their conversation.
Sora smiled, latching to his lover, nuzzling his arm before looking up at him, “Tidus wants to throw you a Bachelor's Party before we leave.” He said, “And, Wakka is completely cool with us. See? I told you.”
Tidus glared at the red head, “Dude, I was that close to getting you to do it too...one more shot man...”
"So it would seem," Riku said, throwing Wakka an uncertain smile. The redhead smiled back and gave him the thumbs up. "And while I appreciate the sentiment, I can't afford to get into any more trouble right now and you know that the last time we all drank together, I was the one they originally accused of stealing that car simply because they think I'm a troublemaker. Oh, and did I mention that I got reamed out by all of your parents for being a terrible influence on you 'poor babies'?"
Tidus snorted at that, “That lasted a whole...what, week? Then my mother found out I was the one who took the car!” He gave a shudder, “Yeah, haven't been right since...”
Sora chuckled before glancing at his watch, “We should get home before your Dad sends
your brother's after us.” He commented to his lover.
Riku was not quite done with Tidus yet. "A week... do you have any idea how much hell I went through in that one week. I doubt your mother's punishment came anywhere near as close to mine and I hadn't even done anything."
"All right, we had that coming. We're sorry, Riku," Wakka apologized. He'd wanted to forget about it. He only hoped the older boy would accept it and they could finally move on.
Needing to calm down, Riku reached for Sora's hand, interlacing their fingers together. "Thanks, but Sora's right. We should be going before my dad sends Kadaj out looking for us."
Tidus nodded, “Yeah, that would be bad.” And, damnit, he meant it. Riku's brother's were just, for lack of a better word, weird!
Sora tugged on his lover's arm, “We'll catch you guys later.” He said, grinning.
Riku didn't bother waving as he turned around to lead Sora back to his car. He was irritated with the way Tidus had just brushed off the car stealing incident like it hadn't been anything serious.
"Let us know when yer leaving!" Wakka called after them, pretty sure that if they didn't, Kairi would.
Sora nodded waving after his friends before he turned to his lover, “See? You got worked up over nothing.” He said softly, pressing a kiss to his lover's arm.
Riku shrugged, not bothering to apologize for his behavior. Just because Wakka, Tidus and Kairi were okay didn't mean that everyone would be. They could not afford to let down their guard for even an instant. "Just get in the car, Sora."
