He should have known she would turn on them; it was totally within her nature to cut off whatever did not suit her purpose or ensure her survival; she had demonstrated this at the estate of the Arl Denerim, but he had been foolish and not nipped this betrayal in the bud. She had proposed an alliance of sorts, for Kirk to support her as the rightful successor to the throne against Alistair and he had refused her outright because he honestly believed Alistair would be a better ruler than her; he should have feigned support to ensure she would not turn on them. Politics was not his forte.
Still, the Landsmeet had not failed, they had wrested control of Ferelden from Loghain’s mad hands and he was forced to face his crimes in the steel of his own blade. Ferelden had been placed under Alistair, supported by Arl Eamon, a combination that would surely have the best interests of the people in mind; which at this very moment, despite the other troubles that plagued Ferelden was the Blight that bore down on them, relentlessly consuming all life in its path. If Kirk had been one to be moved by black humor he might have found it funny that the Landsmeet had almost ended in slaughter despite their intention for the Landsmeet to serve as the tool to end the civil war, civilly. Ferelden was amidst turbulent times and wherever the young Warden walked, the nation around him shifted and was forever changed, and why should it not? The troubles that engulfed this land were not ones that simply dissipated; the near annulment of a Circle Tower consumed by Abominations, a war between the Dalish and Werewolves instigated by the rage and folly of their Keeper, the political battle between the Dwarven nobles for the right to Kingship, the rampant powers of mage and demon repainting Redcliffe’s stony boundaries. Where Kirk had sought allies, he found troubles, and where he ended troubles he found loyal allies. The grubby blonde elf that Duncan had whisked away from the Alienage, from Denerim was not Kirk Tabris the Grey Warden standing here in the palace; face stern, his tattooed cheeks pulled taught though his eyes unmistakably holding kindness for those who had not earned his ire. He had changed so much; still devoted to his belief in the Maker, his delusions concerning the black and white of some of the Chantry’s policies, and the Chantry itself were shattered by what he had witnessed, what he had become. He had condemned blood magic wherever he could, labelled those who had pursued it fools and heretics, apostates of the worst order; maleficarum and yet what he was now, he owed to Blood magic. Avernus, a blood mage somehow alive after hundreds of years, hidden away in his tower at the lost keep of the Wardens’ had confirmed so many of his suspicions: The Joining; ritual consumption of darkspawn blood was in fact blood magic, as were his abilities as a Reaver. Avernus had offered much to Kirk in the way of answers, much in the way of power; the fruits of his horrid research but what Kirk needed to know; why he alone had developed the abilities of a Reaver and his fellow Wardens had not. The mage could not answer. Despite his sordid past and dealings, that the elf had allowed the mage to live, to continue his research at the Keep; ethically, was a testament to his changing perceptions. Now, power was just power, that was all that it was. Blood magic, weapons training, stealth and subterfuge, primal magic and even the Templar arts, they were all the same; just power. Kirk now knew what truly mattered, not the power itself, but how one gained it, and how one used it. Power used and gained at the expense of the innocent; that was the true evil the Chantry should oppose, though he doubted they’d ever see it, for that was their power surmised. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
