When Starr awoke the next morning she found that Shin had already gotten up and was no longer in the room. Thanking Eva for small blessings, she got up and dressed, frowning as she pulled on another of the garments Aleyel had provided. The dark elven woman could’ve given her actual clothes rather than the strange leather outfits. But when she’d asked Aleyel had firmly replied that she wouldn’t reconsider the clothing. So, Starr was still wearing the indecent leather articles. With a huff of exasperation, she stepped out into the main living quarters.
Looking up from the scroll he’d been reading, Shin watched her enter the room. His eyes found faint traces of prior bruising and his lips tightened. “What happened?” He asked, as he stood up.
Eyeing him warily, Starr held her ground as he approached. “What do you mean?” She wasn’t trying to be stubborn, but she wasn’t sure what he meant. As far as she knew, he shouldn’t know about her encounter with Micardrin.
“Those bruises on your shoulders and upper arms, they weren’t present when I left.” He stated, halting about a foot away from her. He took an ever so slight experimental sniff. There was no longer any trace of the troublesome rabenda.
Starr looked away, somewhat chagrinned. “I had some trouble with the clothing articles…” She muttered. “Got kind of tangled in them and needed some help.”
Shin stared at the top of her downturned head and then looked at her ears. They were tightly held back against her head. “Liar.” He replied without anger. “What’s the real reason?” When she stayed silent, he sat back down and observed her closely.
She’d changed since he’d been gone.
Not once had she yelled at him, called him a nasty name, or even so much as thrown him a dirty look. It was unsettling.
“We’re going out.” He stated suddenly, surprising even himself. “Get your cloak.” As she left to retrieve it, he quickly planned a quick trip through the caverns to grab a small bite from one of the vendors and then outside, in the daylight. She’d been in the caverns for several weeks now, going outside should certainly lift her spirits.

Outside, Aleyel watched tensely as Nathavin and Nikvir dueled. A small crowd had been assembled, mandatory for duels such as this. Witnesses to see who emerged victorious. While she knew that Nathavin was a superb archer, Nikvir was no slouch. He was one of the few to have mastered two separate skill sets, spectral master and storm screamer.
Of course, so had Nathavin. But he rarely resorted to his other skills, always preferring his bow. As she watched, Nikvir slowly seemed to gain the upper hand. Her eyes flicked rapidly between Nikvir’s summons, Nikvir himself, and Nathavin.
Dodging between the summon and a rapidly spinning vortex spell, Nathavin used his bow to catch and fling the spell to one side while slicing at the summon with his dagger. The dark energy current was disrupted and the summon faded into nothingness. Hefting the bow, he fired at Nikvir…

As they approached the tunnel’s upper entrance, Shin and Starr could hear the fight taking place outside. Shin pushed through the crowd and focused first on Nikvir and then on Nathavin. Searching the crowd, he saw Aleyel watching tensely. His eyes then landed on Micardrin and narrowed in suspicion. Wherever he went, trouble always followed.
A sharp cry from Nikvir drew his attention back to the duel and he found the mage clutching at his dominant hand which had an arrow protruding through it and staggering to remain upright as another arrow had pierced through his opposite thigh. A dark shadowy spell seemed to pulsate between Nikvir and Aleyel and then vanished with an angry hiss that had Nikvir once more yelling in pain before falling over in the mud.
Nathavin crossed to Aleyel and pulled her close for a moment before speaking crossly at her. “Explain for Shin what just occurred and why.”
Aleyel stood silently for a moment, gathering her thoughts, before launching into her explanation. She glanced at Starr for a moment before trying to tell the tale in such a way that it would shield her from any anger Shin might have.
Shin meanwhile wasn’t fooled. After listening to it all, he repeated it back to Aleyel, correctly guessing where she’d softened the events to spare Starr. After exchanging glances with Nathavin, Shin led Starr away and further out into the forest, continuing the days excursion.
As they left, Starr caught the faint apology Aleyel had murmured to her. She didn’t know what the duel had been about, but she knew the conversation immediately following it had been about her and Aleyel.
Staying silent, she followed Shin through the desolate landscape that was the dark elven homelands. As she kept a watch on her surroundings, she wondered where he was going. He seemed to have no route planned.
However, Shin had a very specific place he was leading them to. And once they’d reached it, he turned to face her. “This is the end of our territory. Stepping beyond here lands you in Gludio territory. You are safe with me, but if you wish to leave, then do so. But understand this: The human alliance that was springing up to help the light elves was dealt a serious blow. Nathavin and I were sent to kill the leadership, and we did so with ease. While we did not like our orders, we could not disobey them either. There will not be any help from the humans for a rather substantial amount of time.”
“And Micardrin will hunt you down. Again.”
He motioned for her to step past him and into what he’d indicated was Gludio territory. Tensely, he waited as she regarded him quietly. He wasn’t going to keep her against her will. If she wanted to leave, he’d let her, although he really wanted her to stay.
Tentatively at first, Starr took one small step, and then another, and then another, past him before breaking into a sprint toward the town of Gludio.
Shin cursed under his breath as he watched her disappear into the forest. He felt more conflicted than he ever had in his life. Half of him wanted to go bring her back, the other half rejoiced at her absence.

Months passed and occasionally the two would spot one another during the sporadic clashes that followed as the humans tried, and failed, to help the remaining light elves retake their village. Shin always ensured in one way or another that she got away from the dark elven forces.
During one of the clashes, Starr and a human hell knight peered out from their hiding spot as Shin yet again led his forces past them. When it was safe to move without drawing the attention of the other dark elves, she and the knight rushed back to the safety of the nearby fortress. The knight eyed her for a moment before speaking cautiously. “That one elf, the leader of that unit… That’s the third time I’ve seen him look directly at you and pass on by.”
Starr glared at the knight. “What of it?”
“He’s protecting you.”
Starr simply turned and walked away without another word.
Far away, when Shin finally got a chance for a break, he lay on a thin blanket staring at the stars in the sky. He’d tried everything to forget her, but couldn’t. Nathavin’s bow hit the ground with a light thump, indicating he was back from his patrols.
“Go get her.” Nathavin advised as he too laid down on a threadbare blanket. “Micardrin is still chasing her, as are others, and we are close to putting a permanent end to the rebellion. There is no telling who she’ll end up with when that happens. Better she’s with you than them.”
“She made her choice when I gave her the chance to leave and she did.” Shin stated matter-of-factly. “I won’t force her to stay with me if she doesn’t want to.” That was the whole reason for setting her free. He didn’t want her caged up with him, or anyone.
Nathavin sighed heavily. “If you don’t, someone else will. You know that.”
Shin sighed in exasperation. It seemed no matter how he handled this she was going to be hurt one way or another.
