Harley: Bitchin’! The Epilogue! You know, it was kind of a coin flip between this ending or skipping forward and ending with Amy going into labour.
Froggy: We decided to leave that for the sequel. How long are Mobian hedgehogs pregnant for, anyways?
Harley: I’d make a guess at six months being reasonable. If you want to be sure though, go ask a Mobian hedgehog.

Epilogue: The End Of The Beginning
It was almost two weeks later, and Shadow had been cleared to leave the hospital. The doctors didn't think there was any risk of further injury, and he was recovering fast. He and Amy walked hand-in-hand out the door, tired, but ready to go home.
Amy held him gently, leaning her head on his shoulder. She glanced at his stomach - the only sign that there had ever been a wound was a long, thin line of fur lighter than the rest of it.
Shadow's ear twitched, hearing footsteps behind them. He turned his head to look and narrowed his eyes as he saw the blue hedgehog, "What do you want?" he growled quietly. Amy stepped away from Sonic slightly, cuddling closer to Shadow protectively.
Sonic stepped forward, limping slightly, his knee almost healed now. He looked at them quietly for a long moment and then lowered himself down onto his good knee, "Amy... Shadow..." he said quietly, looking up at them with a hurt expression, "I know there is nothing I can do to make up for what I've done to you-”
“Damn right,” Shadow snapped.
“I just wanted to say that I'm sorry..." Sonic looked miserable. Amy and Shadow hadn’t spoken to him for the whole of the last two weeks. Him raping Amy had hit the tabloids rather noisily, and he’d spent a week being questioned before the government had bought him out. And then Amy’s pregnancy had hit the tabloids after that, and there had been an awful lot of arguments over whether it was the offspring of the Ultimate Lifeform, or the rape-child of a fallen hero. They were still going on.
Amy looked down at him coldly, as if he were a new breed of slime, "For what?" she asked.
"For... for all the times I’ve hurt you!" he shouted suddenly. What the hell else would he be saying sorry for?! "For breaking your trust! For not believing you!" Tears started to stream down his face, "Can you ever forgive me?"
"I don't know," Amy answered quietly, "Get up off your knees Sonic, you look like an idiot."
Sonic blinked and then did as she asked, standing up again. Shadow's red eyes never left the blue hedgehog’s green ones, glaring harshly into him.
Amy cuddled closer to Shadow again, her hand moving instinctively to her belly. There was nothing to be seen just yet, but Sonic noticed the gesture. He swallowed and spoke, shivering, "...Who is the father?"
"Does it really make any difference to what you did?" Amy asked him.
"No," Sonic admitted, "But I'd rather that you two get to raise your own child... rather than mine."
"I suppose you'd feel better if there wasn't a permanent reminder nagging your conscience?" Amy added, a little spitefully, "You'd forget easier that way."
"I'll never forget," Sonic said softly, tears dripping from his face, “I swear it.”
Shadow finally spoke, "I am the child’s father. I can feel it... can't you?" It was strangely merciful for the black hedgehog to say that.
Amy tugged on his arm, "Come on, Shadow, let's go home..."
Shadow didn't move just yet. There was something else he wanted to say, "...I forgive you, Sonic,” he lied, “But if you ever hurt my... family again... I swear to you, I’ll beat you to death with your own intestinal tract. Let's go, Amy," he said, finally relenting to Amy's tugs. He turned away from Sonic, who watched them go.
Neither of them looked back at him, but Amy relaxed slightly, resting her head on Shadow’s shoulder, obviously relieved to be away from the blue hedgehog.
Shadow wrapped an arm around Amy's shoulder, holding her close. "Everything is going to be fine now..." he whispered
"Of course it is," Amy answered, "Because you're by my side."
Shadow smiled, feeling warmed by her faith in him. He reached down and caressed her belly, imagining what the future held. Once again, because of Amy being in his life, he wasn't afraid of the future. He looked forward to it. He was no longer alone, and never would be again. Shadow loved, and he was loved in return. He was starting to realise that was what he’d always wanted.
"We belong together," Amy continued, "I can feel it... we're so different, but we're different like... like jigsaw pieces. Or the cogs in a clock. Or roses… and thorns."
"Yes, we are. We fit together, and together, we form a whole greater than it's individual parts. Many search for that kind of unity. Few find it. We are very lucky." Shadow hugged her close.
Amy sighed happily. The future was going to be complicated, and difficult, and above all, interesting. She was rather looking forward to sharing it with Shadow.

A long way away, somebody whose motives were more than slightly unscrupulous was monitoring their conversation, and also some highly confidential hospital records.
“So, the Ultimate Lifeform has impregnated a female,” the GUN official chuckled softly, then laughed, “I’m sure we can think of something… interesting to do with it.”

And elsewhere, somebody else was monitoring HIS computer.
“Oh, this is just too wonderful,” Eggman Robotnik leered, “Amy Rose Blossom and Shadow the Ultimate Lifeform? Having a baby? Oh, it’s too easy…”

Harley: Yeah, this was kinda short. It’s mostly the epilogue, anyway.
Froggy: Now go and listen to “How You Remind Me” by Nickelback, which Harley decided would be the Theme Tune to this story.
Harley: Like we said before, there’s a sequel. And the first chapter is UP, UP, UP right now! A Rose And A Thorn 2! Amy has her baby! And there’s so many interesting and violent problems as a direct result!
