Marv and Heather stood in a dark alley, the corpse of a homeless man to their side. Heather didn't seem disgusted by the corpse, in fact, she was examining it curiously. Marv had cut out several edible hunks of meat and had put them on a metal strip that had been lying on the ground, placing it over the flaming barrel the homeless man had been using for lighting and for warmth on cold nights. The meat was slowly cooking, mildly disturbing scents rising up on the air. Marv looked over to her. She was crouching by the body, just looking along it. "Hey." Marv said. She looked over her shoulder at him. Her face didn't have any emotions clear on it, he could only see curiosity in her eyes as to why he had said "Hey". He raised an eyebrow. "Why are you looking at it so much? Aren't you scared of it, or grossed out?" Heather smiled a little and shook her head. "I'm not scared of dead people, I saw a lot of them when those raiders and slavers destroyed my home...They killed everyone, even my parents...I think I was the last one left when the slavers finally found me..."
She looked back to the body and said "I've seen a lot of people die, so I guess I'm just not scared of it anymore..." Marv looked back to the meat cooking over the fire and said "Yeah, that's right, you said before that raiders and slavers destroyed your town...Where did you live? I don't think you ever said that." Heather shook her head slightly. "I don't think my home even had a name...It wasn't a very big place....Just a few homes that my family and a few others had built...We didn't see anybody go by the town ever, not even once...And then the raiders came, and none of my family or anybody else wanted to give in...They all fought, and...They lost..." Heather stood up and turned back to him. Her eyes were sad, and she was focusing her half-closed vision on the ground. "I am scared of one thing, though..." Marv looked at her curiously. "What's that?" He asked. She began to look more sad and perhaps a little scared as she quietly said "I'm scared that they'll come back for me...That they'll know you saved me and that the rest will find me..."
Marv let the meat rest on the metal, turning to Heather and getting down on one knee by her. She was starting to sniffle slightly. He put a hand on her shoulder lightly. "Heather, they're not going to know that you're gone...As it is, they might never find out about the three that I killed...You're safe now..." She looked into his eyes. "R-Really? Are you sure?" She asked nervously. He nodded with a small smile. She smiled happily and quickly slipped her arms around his neck, bringing her head next to his, closing her eyes as she kept smiling. "It's because of you I'm safe..." She said softly. Marv chuckled softly as she held him tight, standing up, hoping that she would release him. Her arms still around him, her feet dangling in front of his upper thighs near his waist, she kept holding him and let him pick her up.
Marv heard Heather giggle softly. He grabbed her by the hips, Heather releasing him as he brought her away from him, holding her up. She was surprisingly light. She placed her hands on his wrists and looked into his eyes with a smile. He smiled slightly and exhaled through his nose softly, like an unvoiced sigh. "What am I going to do with you?..." He said softly. Heather smiled more and said "Let me stay and let me eat?" Marv rolled his eyes lightly before letting her down on the ground gently, on her feet. "Give it a little time, Heather. It won't be done cooking for...I'd say another ten minutes or so." Heather nodded and said "Okay!" She stood by him and watched the meat cook with a small smile constantly on her face, the fires of the barrel glowing along her face, lighting her eyes up in an almost menacing manner.
Hiro stepped into the office of Keith Wright, saying "How's it going, mister Wright?" Keith sat behind his desk, putting a book down on the top of his desk as Hiro walked in. "Hiro. Let's keep this short and sweet. You remember someone named Dawn?" Hiro looked up and to the side in thought, eventually nodding slightly, saying "Yeah, real curvy chick, one of your dad's most trusted people, right?" Keith looked into Hiro's eyes a bit coldly. "One of my most trusted people as well, but you're pretty much right. She's disappeared. She probably left town again, that's what the people down at the Golden Globes studio are saying. We're not one hundred percent sure where she went, but we'd like for her to come back. We could use her help taking down the Salvatores." Hiro smirked. "We're taking down the Salvatores? That'll leave us in total control of New Reno!" Keith nodded. "I know. That's the plan. Now, some people say they saw Dawn and some other guy head in the direction of Rister. Seeing as how it's not too far, I want you to go there and see if you can find her."
Hiro raised an eyebrow, losing anything that might even remotely resemble a smile. "Are you serious?" He asked. "That's a long trip!" Keith forcefully said "I know, I know. But we could really use Dawn on this one. So head out there and start looking for her, today, too. I'll get one of the girls in the kitchen to give you a bag of food and drinks." Keith sighed heavily, saying "Fine, I'll see if I can get her. I'm gonna be fucking pissed though if I show up and everybody's all like "Oh, sorry Hiro, your porn star's in another city!" That's all I'm sayin'." Keith gave Hiro a look, Hiro raising his hands in a bit of exasperation, leaving Keith's office, closing the door behind him.
Dawn walked with Kid, heading down a few streets, away from the large street party. Holding hands still, Kid carrying the bag of supplies with his free hand, they travelled for about twenty minutes, finally reaching a large house surrounded with guards. Dawn noticed several snipers on the roof, all pointing their weapons at them. Dawn squeezed Kid's hand and said "Just stay still Kid, they won't shoot you if you don't do anything." Kid hadn't noticed the snipers, but he quickly spotted the glints of their scopes on the building's rooftop. A few radio alerts later and several guards in metal armour were rushing towards them. Standing a safe distance away with their guns pointed at her, seven guards stood in a line, all watching them. One said "Who're you and what do you want?" Dawn, in a serious tone, called out "I'm a close friend of Julian and Curtis, tell them I'm here, they'll want to see me." The guard coldly said "Only Julian is here. If you're a friend of Curtis', you better turn around and walk off before we start to get trigger-happy."
Dawn raised an eyebrow curiously for a moment, not responding for a few seconds. "I've been out of town for a while. If something happened between Julian and Curtis, then I don't know about it. Just tell him that I'm here, trust me, he'll be happy to see me." None of the guards said anything for a few seconds. One of them pulled out a walkie-talkie, changing it's frequency for a moment. He pressed a button on it and spoke. "Sir, hate to disturb you, but there's a woman here named Dawn, says that you'll want to see her." A voice came back quickly. "Dawn? Yes, yes, oh, it's been too long! Don't hurt her, let her in!" The guard said "Yes, of course, sir." He put the walkie-talkie back into his pocket, the guards all lowering their guns. "You can head on in." The guard said a little grudgingly. They all began to take their posts once more, the snipers being radioed that they were okay, no longer pointing their rifles at them. Dawn smiled at Kid, Kid looking at her with a bit of relief. He had grown a little worried once he had seen the multiple snipers on the rooftop pointing their weapons at the two of them.
The house was set on a bit of a hill, and it looked like it had three stories to it. It looked like a pre-war house, as in, one that wasn't made from scrap after the war. A long pathway of dark stone went up to the house's front double doors. The two of them began to walk up the pathway, reaching the doors in just a few moments. Dawn twisted the bronze knob of the right side door, pushing it open. The inside of the house was surprisingly well furnished, with sofas and tables that looked almost new. Dawn raised her eyebrows. "Wow..." She said quietly. "I wonder where he got all this stuff?..." She murmured. A rapid set of footsteps began to sound out upstairs, a man appearing at the top of a curved staircase nearby. The staircase connected to the second floor with a curve to the right, but it went down a curved wall until the last few steps at the bottom pointed towards the front doors of the house.
He was dressed in a dark green shirt with a pair of dark blue jeans, the jeans' right leg being torn off mid-calf. He wasn't wearing any shoes or socks. His hair was black and spiky, a slight goatee to him, as well. His eyes were a deep shade of blue. He had a slightly muscular body. He quickly walked down the stairs, holding his arms out, chuckling happily as he approached her. Dawn smiled happily and closed her eyes, returning his embrace when he reached her, the two of them hugging for a few moments. He released her, saying "Oh, it's been way too long Dawn!" Dawn kept smiling as she said "I know, it's good to see you again!" The man, who must have been Julian, turned his attention to Kid. "Who's this little fella?" He asked. Dawn said "This is Kid, a dear friend of mine." Julian raised an eyebrow, looking to Dawn. "Kid? You mean like Billy the Kid?" Dawn shrugged gently. "I had never thought of that, but yeah, I suppose so." She said.
Julian smiled a little and said "Cute, I suppose. But anyway, now that you're here, there's something I'd like to talk to you about. It's...Important. It involves Curtis." Dawn raised an eyebrow as she said "For some reason I get the feeling you want me to do some sort of a job." Julian took in a breath before nodding gently, saying "Eh...Yeah...It's important though, and I'm willing to pay you a lot for it." Dawn nodded, saying "Alright. You want to talk in your office?" Julian nodded, saying "That'd be for the best. You gonna bring your little "friend", heh?" Dawn smiled and said "Of course." Julian turned and began to walk up the stairs. Dawn quickly whispered to him "If you're wondering why me might seem a little strange, it's because he's gay." Kid raised an eyebrow, quietly repeating "Gay?" Dawn nodded, saying "I'll explain later, once we have some free time." Julian stood at the top of the stairs. "Well, coming?" He asked, putting his hands on his hips. Dawn said "Yeah, coming!" She took Kid by the hand, leading him up the stairs.
A minute or two later, they were all in Julian's office, Julian sitting down on the edge of a desk in the room, facing a large liquor cabinet on the other side of the room. A few bookshelves were in the room, empty of books, instead stacked with guns of various types and their respective ammo types. Kid let the bag of supplies he carried down to the floor by his feet. Dawn looked at the guns and smiled. "You know Julian, I can't help but notice the improvements to this place. The guards, the guns, the furniture, all of it, it's pretty impressive." Julian smiled and said "There's a reason behind all of the new stuff. Not too long ago, when me and Curtis were...Still together..." For a moment, Julian's face grew a bit depressed. He took in a breath before continuing. "We had found a military bunker just a mile or two away from Rister. It was totally untouched. It only took our reaver tech experts about a week to crack into it and unlock it. Inside there was an incredible amount of guns and armour, enough for someone to arm a small army, seriously!"
Dawn raised her eyebrows in a bit of surprise. "Guns weren't the only thing it had, though. I guess it was also meant to house a soldier or two, because we found a few sets of bones in a living quarter at the back of the bunker. I took most of the furniture for this house. Curtis and I got all of our guys to bring the guns and armour back here. That's how most of my guys have good gear on them." Dawn nodded, crossing her arms across her chest as she said "So...What happened between you and Curtis? Is it serious?" Julian let out a sigh, standing up from the desk, walking over to his liquor cabinet. He pulled it open and grabbed a shot glass along with a bottle of Rot Gut, pouring himself a quick shot, downing it rapidly before replacing the bottle and shot glass both in the cabinet. He closed the cabinet, saying "It's serious, all right."
He looked over to Dawn. "Curtis wants me dead. He thought I was stealing caps from him and plotting to kill him so I could have sole ownership of Rister. He took most of the fancy guns and armour and about half of our guys before leaving. To make matters worse, without consulting me, a lot of my guys tried attacking them not long ago. He sent over a few assassins a week or two back to try and kill me in my sleep, but luckily I started sleeping with a gun a few days before that happened. That's why security is so jacked up now, I can't take any chances. I trust you, though." Dawn said "I would hope so." Julian took in another breath, letting it out as a sigh. "I want you to assassinate Curtis. Do it, and I'll pay you one thousand three hundred caps. I'll even supply you with the proper gear for it: a sniper rifle and a Stealth Boy." Dawn had a serious face as she said "You do realize you're asking me to kill your old lover and my old friend, right?"
Julian nodded. "I know...It's not easy for me, and I'm sure it won't be easy for you. But I have another idea for a reward you can have. Curtis took almost all of the good gear we got from the bunker and stashed it in a building near his base. Kill him, and it'll all be mine. I'll give you some armour and weapons. That, on top of the caps, will have you coming out on top." Dawn looked down and to the side, thinking on the matter a bit, her arms still crossed. Kid looked at her. "You s-said that if someone you liked asked you f-for a favour and it meant killing, th-that if the other person actually did s-something wrong, that you'd d-do it." Dawn nodded at him, saying "...I know...But this is an old friend we're talking about, here." Julian looked at Dawn pleadingly. "Please, Dawn...This man tried to have me killed, and even though I still love him...I can't let emotion get in the way. This is all based on doubts, paranoia, and mistakes, but I can't fix it myself. Killing him will be better in the long run. I'll be able to put Rister at ease without starting a huge war with Curtis. Besides, with all the gear he took, he'd probably win."
Dawn took another moment to respond. She nodded gently, saying "Okay, I'll do it. Do you have a plan?" Julian nodded, smiling with relief as he said "Thank you, and yes, I do. Taryn, a reaver, has been undercover in Curtis' group for a while now, and I'll get a message to her that it's time for Curtis to be taken out of the picture. She'll ask to meet him somewhere away from his base, and he'll show up, he trusts her deeply. When he shows up, you'll have your chance to shoot him before he goes into the house. Taryn won't have a plan for after he goes in, so if he does, her cover will most likely be blown. Curtis will wonder why she wanted to meet him there, and if she has no plan, he'll get suspicious and might just run. Use the Stealth Boy and hide somewhere with the sniper rifle. Put him down when he shows up and just leave, the guards won't know where you are because of the Stealth Boy." Dawn nodded. "Alright...I think I understand. How will you get the message to Taryn?" Julian said "Every once in a while she heads out to a diner to eat. That's where she meets up with some of my guys to give them information on the things Curtis might be planning. I'll get my guys to give her the message, and she'll tell them where she'll get Curtis to meet her."
Dawn nodded again. "Why me?" she asked bluntly. "Sounds like you could get anybody to do this, and probably for a cheaper price, too." Julian smiled. "It's simple. You're the best shot I've ever seen. If I got someone else and they missed, Curtis might never show his head again. I trust you to take the shot and hit the first time, no matter the time of day or the temperature of the air." Dawn took in a deep breath, saying "Alright...When will this all happen?" Julian said "Taryn is probably heading to the diner for a late snack right now, so I can have the message sent to her right away. If all goes smoothly, she should have Curtis meeting her somewhere by midnight. You'll be taking a night-time shot, so be careful, make careful sure you aim right." Dawn said "I'm always careful with my shots. Don't worry....I'll put him down. Just...Are you really sure about this, Julian?" Julian slowly nodded, sadly looking down to the floor. "I am." He said. "I wish this could be resolved some other way, but Curtis refuses to talk to me. After those assassins, I knew drastic measure had to be taken." He looked up to her eyes. "Believe me, Dawn. I don't enjoy this. It's the only way, though."
Dawn nodded and said "Alright...As long as you're sure." He nodded and walked around his desk, pulling open a drawer and taking out a walkie-talkie. He pressed a button on it, saying "Xavier, tell Taryn to have Curtis meet her somewhere, preferably in a building of some kind so it won't freak him out by being too out in the open. It's time that Curtis was removed from the spotlight. I'll have a sniper I trust take him down." A voice crackled back to him. "Alright, I can see her right now, I'll give her the message." Julian placed the walkie-talkie down on his desk, his face looking a little depressed still. "You okay, Julian?" Dawn asked, stepping over to him, Kid staying where he was. Julian nodded softly. "I'm just not really looking forward to this, you know?...He already broke my heart when he left and again when he sent those assassins, but I think I'll start hurting all over again once I hear he's dead..." Dawn gave him a soft few pats on the back. "You said so yourself, this will all be better in the long run. Don't worry, I'll try to make it quick for him. One shot one kill, you know?"
Julian nodded softly, looking to her. "Thank you, Dawn...I really appreciate this...I already owe you so much, I don't know if I can ever repay you..." Dawn smiled gently and said "That armour, guns, and caps might be a nice start." Julian smiled and chuckled, saying "Heh, of course. But I mean I owe you so much more than just physical things. I'd give my soul to repay you, darling. You've helped me with so much, it's almost like I made a deal with the devil. Let me go get you the sniper rifle you'll use and the Stealth Boy, okay?" Dawn nodded, smiling more as he got up and left the room, heading down the hallway. Dawn looked at Kid and lost her smile. "I want you to stay here while I'm doing this thing, I don't want you to get into danger if something goes wrong and I get caught." Kid nodded, saying "Okay..." Dawn stepped closer to him, holding her hands out, Kid taking them in his. Dawn smiled and saw the slightly-worried look on his face. "I'll be fine, Kid...Don't worry..." Kid nodded. He was indeed worried over Dawn and the mission she would be going on, but her words calmed him down slightly and put him at ease. They came closer together and hugged in silence, waiting for Julian to return.
Julian came back around five minutes later, a sniper rifle in his right hand, along with a strange mechanical object in his left. The sniper rifle looked almost like an assault rifle with a scope mounted on it instead of an actual sniper rifle. It had a long magazine that stuck out from the bottom of the weapon's frame, the magazine not curving or anything, simply sticking out with a flat bottom. A fabric strap was attached to a clip near the end of the handguard of the gun, the other end attached to the shoulder rest, allowing Dawn to carry it by letting it hang from the strap on her shoulder. "Here. A sniper rifle. I'm not sure if it's the kind you're used to, but it is a sniper rifle. I think it's chambered to work with different bullets than the usual kind." She handed it to Dawn, Dawn ejecting the magazine and looking at it, seeing it to be fully loaded with six long, thin bullets. She loaded the magazine back in and raised it up, peering through the scope for a moment, seeing it to be unfractured or damaged in any way, nodded with satisfaction. "You're right, it's not the kind I'm used to using, but it'll do just fine."
Kid watched as Julian held out the other object, Dawn taking it. It had two straps to it, which Dawn fastened around her left wrist. The device wasn't too big, covering only a bit of her wrist and forearm. It had several buttons and a few dials on it, along with a small sensor that sat still. Dawn pressed a button on it, a faint "beeping" appearing. Dawn immediately disappeared! Kid's eyes widened. Julian smiled happily. Kid looked to where Dawn stood a second before. He realized he could still see the outline of her body, but it was like she was made of glass, as he could see the things behind her clearly. A moment later, another "beeping" appeared, Dawn reappearing. She smiled. "Just making sure it's all okay." She said. "Nothing worse than finding out your gear doesn't work in the middle of a mission." Julian nodded understandingly. "Don't worry, I'm not offended." Dawn slipped her arm through the strap, bringing the sniper rifle over onto her back slightly, letting it rest. Julian said "Okay, now, I should be getting a message any second now as to where Taryn will be meeting Curtis."
As if by magic, a voice came from the walkie-talkie, saying "Julian, Taryn says that she'll be meeting Curtis by the old hotel, just a few streets from your place." Dawn nodded. "I know the place." She said confidently. Julian picked up the walkie-talkie and spoke into it. "Alright, the sniper will be there." A voice crackled back. "Got it." He put the walkie-talkie back down, saying "Well...You better get going, huh? Is your friend going to stay here?" Dawn nodded. "If it's okay with you." She said. Julian nodded. "It's fine. Good luck, hmm?" Dawn nodded and smiled a little before walking over to Kid. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders, closing her eyes as she hugged him. Kid hugged her back, hearing her whisper "I won't be long...I'll be thinking about you..."
Kid closed his eyes kissed her on the side of her neck gently. She gave him a kiss on the cheek, releasing him afterwards. Julian seemed a little surprised, but he didn't say anything. Dawn got up and left the room, walking down the stairs and out of the house. Julian looked at Kid and said "Well...Here, I'll let you relax in here until Dawn gets back, I think I'll go to my room and try to relax a little myself, okay?" Kid nodded. Julian left the room, closing the door slightly behind himself. Kid walked over to a nearby window, watching Dawn leave and walk away from the house, heading down the street in front of the house and into the night.
Dawn walked through several dark streets for nearly fifteen minutes, finally reaching her destination. It was a large two-story building with several rooms to it, a large sign nearby stating that it was the "Ghomersten Hotel". She spotted several withered trees nearby, in a large empty field of dirt and rocks nearby. From within the trees she could easily see the front entrances of the hotel, and she'd be able to slip off into the nearby rocks of the field, no problem. She smiled and walked over to the trees, crouching down low in the darkness of the area, unshouldering the sniper rifle and holding it tight. She turned the safety off and raised it up, holding it steady as she crouched, looking through the scope. Her eyes adjusted to the dark, making it fairly easy to see the entrances of the hotel. Dawn waited for around ten minutes before a group of five people began to quickly approach the hotel. She glanced along them all. She quickly noticed one of them was Curtis, she could recognize his face. He was dressed in leather armour mark two, but he wasn't wearing any helmet.
Dawn quickly turned on her Stealth Boy, the machine reflecting the light around her, quickly turning her near-invisible. She looked back through the scope. The group was rapidly growing close to a hotel room. Dawn sighted down on Curtis' head. Without hesitation, she pulled the trigger. A bursting of blood flew out as Curtis' head was torn in half by the powerful bullet. The group of guards began to panic, all of them looking around with their guns. Dawn was about to leave when she noticed that none of Curtis' guards had even looked in her direction, they were now looking towards the room they were going to have entered. They kicked open the door of the room, pointing their guns inside. Dawn remembered Julian mention a reaver, the one that would lure Curtis there with the fake meeting. She wondered if the reaver had a weapon to defend herself with. The guards began to spray bullets into the room. Dawn made up her mind to try and help. She rapidly fired off another four shots, one per person, hitting them all in the back. She turned off her Stealth Boy and got up, running towards the hotel, moving towards the hotel room.
She looked at Curtis when she reached him. He was dead, all right. Three of his four guards were dead as well, but the fourth was still alive. Dawn noticed he was struggling to raise up a pistol to shoot Dawn with. Dawn quickly pointed her sniper rifle at the man, firing her last shot, hitting him in the chest and killing him. She walked towards the room. She stepped inside, seeing a figure lying on the ground in a puddle of blood. It was clearly a reaver, the clothes gave it away. She was wearing a tight leather jumpsuit with protective metal plates kept on her with belts and straps. She had a .44 M29 revolver hanging limply in her right hand. Her left hand was covered in a black leather glove, Dawn noticing that the glove almost seemed to have rusty metal fish hooks attached to the ends of it's fingers, making it quite a fearsome weapon. A strong enough swipe could probably cause deep, gruesome lacerations. Due to the rust of the hooks, the cuts would probably develop a horrible infection, as well.
The reaver was taking shallow breaths, murmuring to herself, sounding like she was almost saying a prayer. Dawn got down by her. A scar went across both of her eyes diagonally. Her right eye seemed metallic in nature, like it was robotic. Her left eye was completely colourless, even the pupil was a faded gray. Blood was leaking out of her mouth. Her hair was long and blonde, being a bit wavy. She looked into Dawn's face, her eyes widening a little, but not from fear. She stopped murmuring her prayer. Dawn asked "Do you have any medical supplies? I might be able to help you!" The reaver whispered "You...You must be an angel sent by His capacitance...I...I welcome death..." Dawn made a face, saying "Welcoming death has got to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Even reavers want to keep living. Now answer my question, do you have any medical supplies around here?"
The reaver seemed to be getting sleepy, slowly saying "...The...The kitchen..." Dawn walked into the kitchen, spotting a first aid kit lying on the single table in the room. It was shaped like a small rectangle and was bordered with red, it's inside white except for the red "plus" sign in the very middle. She popped it open and spotted only two items inside; a Trauma Pack and a piece of After Burner Gum. Dawn took them both and walked back out to the reaver. She said "Okay, I got the stuff here..." She stopped moving and talking when she noticed that the reaver wasn't moving or making a sound. Dawn got down by her and felt along the reaver's throat, feeling no pulse. Dawn looked into the reaver's eyes for a few moments before standing up and simply leaving the room, taking the medical supplies with her, shouldering the sniper rifle. She turned her Stealth Boy back on, quickly jogging down a few streets, heading back for Julian's home.
Another fifteen minutes later, she had reached the house, turning her Stealth Boy off. The snipers and guards instantly pointed their guns at her, but when they realized it was her, they calmed down. She headed back into the house, quickly greeted by Kid, who rushed down the stairs to see her. She smiled and hugged him tightly when he reached her. Julian walked down the stairs slowly. "Is it done?" He asked. Dawn nodded at him. Julian's face grew sad for a moment. "And Taryn?" He asked. Dawn released Kid and looked to Julian. "The reaver? Curtis' guards must have thought that she did it or they might have figured out she set it up, because they busted into her motel room and shot her. I killed the guards and went to help her, but...She was already dead by the time I found some medical stuff." Julian noticed the medical supplies in Dawn's hands. "I take it that was what you were going to use on her?" Dawn glanced at the Trauma Pack and the After Burner Gum. She nodded. Julian said "Well...I'll take some men to the hotel and see if Curtis has his keys on his body. In the meantime...Could you do me a little favour?"
Dawn nodded. Julian said "Would you mind telling Taryn's sister of her death? I'd do it myself, but I should get those keys before some looter does." Dawn nodded. "Certainly." Julian left, leaving the two of them alone. "Wait, where is she?" Dawn called out to Julian. He was already gone, heading down the nearby street. Dawn made a bit of a face. "I'm here, Beautiful One." A gentle voice said from behind both Dawn and Kid, sounding a little muffled and with a bit of an accent that Dawn didn't immediately recognize. Dawn turned around. She hadn't even noticed her, but she had been standing in the darkness the whole time. She stepped out of the shadows. She was dressed much like the other reaver had been, in a totally black jumpsuit with metal plates kept in place over vital spots and joints, only the plates were black on this girl. She wore a gasmask that covered her entire head, showing no hair. The lenses to the goggles had been pulled out, and the material that had been between the goggles had been removed, creating a single visor for the girl to look through.
Her skin looked pale and creamy. A long, thin strip of red cloth was attached to her right shoulder, hanging down free behind her until it reached the back of her right thigh. In a holster attached to her left hip sat a metallic pistol, Dawn not seeing enough of it to be able to accurately identify what it was. Her left hand was covered in a black fingerless gloves, the ends of her fingers just slightly visible. The glove had a metal plate that protected the girl's wrist and another one on the back of her hand. The metal plate on the back of her hand had three thin blades sticking out of it straight along her fingers, ending just past the tips of her fingers. The blades looked like they could extend quite a bit, as well. Dawn recognized the weapon as a set of Razor Claws. Her eyes were a deep, lovely shade of blue, a bit of green entering them near the edges. Dawn said "Hmm...I see you're a reaver, too." The girl nodded. Dawn said "Well...If you were there the whole time, then you heard me say it before. Your sister is dead."
The girl nodded, holding her hands together behind her. "I know...We knew she would die young long ago. Our father was informed of this in a vision." Dawn raised an eyebrow. "A vision?" She asked. The girl nodded. "He was electrocuting himself to contact the Holy One. He did it for five minutes, electrocuting himself rather powerfully. When he stopped, he said he had seen His Glory." Dawn and Kid listened. The girl continued. "He said that the Holy One had said that Taryn would become one with Him and His bursting mass soon. He also said that the Holy One had demanded that I accompany the incandescent angel that would escort my sister to Him. That must be you, yes?" Dawn slowly shook her head, saying "I...I don't think so. I tried to help your sister, but she died. That's about it." The girl asked "Did she call you an angel in death?" Dawn nodded. The girl happily said "Then I am to accompany you. It is my purpose, His Holiness communicated it to my father. You were the angel that guided my sister's electronic mind to the Holy One. I must stay with you. I do not claim to know what the Holy One's plan is, but I know the first step is staying with you."
Dawn said "Ehhh...I don't think that's such a good idea..." The girl stepped closer to them. "I'm sorry, but it's not much of a choice for you, it's not even one for me. I must follow His plan, no matter how strange it may seem, Beautiful One. I must accompany you. It is that simple." Kid looked to her. "Why do you call her th-that?" He asked. She looked at him. "Is it not obvious? It's because she is a beautiful angel sent by Him, whether she knows it or not. She visited my sister's electronic mind in the brief moments of it's ending surge, guaranteeing it a safe wire to Him. And...She is indeed beautiful, do you not agree?" Kid blushed faintly and nodded, Dawn raising an eyebrow and smiling gently. "What's your name, then? Can you at least fight?" Dawn asked. The girl pulled out her pistol, Dawn's eyes going a bit wide at the sight of it. It was a YK32 Pulse Pistol, a rather advanced pistol that ran on small energy cells and fired electrical pulses that could do serious damage to just about anything.
It had a thick metal form to it, the trigger being all-metal and looking more like a long button than a trigger. A small scope of sorts was attached to it's side, the lenses of the scope being light purple. The end of the pistol had three yellow rings around it, ended off by a red glass sphere of sorts. Dawn knew the dangerous electrical charges flew out of the red tip. "I have this, given to me by my father, and my Razor Claws, a gift from my sister. I know how to use them well enough to kill. Is that enough?" Dawn nodded, calming down gently. Kid asked "Your name?" The girl looked at him and said "My name is Dominique Dubois, but Dominique will do just fine, or even Dom, if you prefer." Dawn smiled a little and said "French, right?" The girl seemed surprised, nodding happily. "Indeed, it is." Dawn smiled more. Just then, Julian came back, everyone looking to him. He beckoned to them, saying "Everyone, come on, I got Curtis' keys, let's go to his stash!" Kid ran upstairs and grabbed the bag of supplies he had left there, coming back down a moment later. Everyone began to follow him, leaving his house and heading down a nearby street.
Within twenty minutes of hasty walking, they all stood in front of a small single-story house, Julian quickly unlocking the door and pushing it open. He reached inside and flicked a switch, the building filling with light. They all stepped inside. Dawn's eyes widened. Kid gasped slightly. Dominique raised her eyebrows. The single large room to the building was filled with rows and rows of combat armour and laser rifles, along with a few miniguns and even a couple of rocket launchers, tables covered in ammo for the weapons. At the very back of the room was a few items by themselves on a single table, the items being too far for anyone to see them properly. "Those are your's, for your help. I put your caps there, too. I didn't get a good look at the armour or the gun, but I'm sure it's good. Whatever it is, trust me, you've earned it. Your help has been invaluable once again. Curtis' soldiers are flocking back to me. I have total control over everything, but...I still miss him..."
Dawn smiled comfortingly and gave him a pat on the back, like before. "It's okay, Julian. You'll find someone else." He shrugged. "Maybe, maybe not." She gave him a single more pat before heading towards the back of the room, followed by Kid and Dominique. Dawn began to grin when she reached the back of the room. "Holy shit!" She exclaimed in excitement. She ran to the back of the room. "This is the new armour those NCR guys sometimes wear!...Oh my God, I've always wanted to get my hands on some! A Gauss Rifle, too! Damn!!" Dawn immediately began to pull off her armour, dropping her sniper rifle and medical items and even her Stealth Boy, eventually standing just in her underwear in front of Kid and Dominique. The both of their eyes widened at the sight of her. She grabbed part of the armour. It was a vest of sorts, being filled with bulletproof material, steel being inside the vest on either side of the bulletproof material, leading to an extremely protective piece of armour. She pulled down a zipper along it's back, slipping it on, looking behind herself at Kid a little embarrassingly, asking "Hey, Kid...Zip me up?"
Kid blushed and stepped forward, pulling the tough zipper up and doing as she bid. She smiled and thanked him, feeling the snug and protective armour hug to her body. A black trenchcoat sat among the items, Dawn pulling it on. It had a few pockets along the back, possibly for clips and magazines of ammo. The trenchcoat reached her ankles, a white letter and number painted on the back of the trenchcoat being "G6". She grabbed a pair of black pants, the pants also having bulletproof material inside it in clumps and bunches all along both of the legs. She pulled them on, zipping them up and buttoning them, pulling on a black fabric belt, as well. A pair of black leather gloves sat on the table, Dawn pulling them on with a grin. A set of large, black combat boots sat on the table, the boots looking like they had steel covering the toes for a devastating kick. Dawn pulled them on and laced them tight. Kid noticed a slightly-intimidating helmet on the table, which Dawn quickly grabbed. It seemed almost like a gasmask, but the entire thing was made of black steel and had a hard, round top like a normal helmet. The lenses were deep blue and lit up slightly from the inside of the helmet, giving them a fiendish appearance.
The helmet had three white symbols painted on it's left side, the symbols being "(3)". She pulled it on and turned to them, looking like quite a menacing figure. Her long black hair hung down between the helmet and trenchcoat, down over the popped collar of the trenchcoat and along her back. She gripped the rifle on the table along with a nearby clip of ammo, loading it into the rifle with a magnetic whine. It was an M72 Gauss Rifle, one of the strongest weapons known to the people of the wastes. It fired a metal slug using an electromagnetic field at high velocity, giving the slugs incredible armour-penetrating capabilities. It had a long range and was very accurate, but the only problem was that it's ammo was scarce. Luckily four clips sat on the table, Dawn having just loaded the fifth into the rifle. It's barrel was curious to Kid. It seemed to be made of several oval-like metallic objects with three small prongs coming out of the end, most likely where the slugs came from. Dawn grinned inside her helmet. Her voice came out of the helmet through a speaker inside the helmet's front, sounding rather clear and crisp. "How do I look?" She asked. Kid slowly said "...Scary...And tough..."
Dawn laughed softly. She laid the rifle down on the table, pulling off her helmet and holding it in her hands as she quietly said "I don't think Julian realizes how much this armour and gun are worth, if he did, I doubt he'd just give it to me..." Kid said "But he's not just giving it t-to you, you killed C-Curtis." Dawn smiled, saying "Yeah, you're right..." A large sack sat on the table, as well. Dawn reached out to it and pulled it open, grinning at the caps within. "Awesome!" She said happily. She nodded. "I guess we're done here. Let's get going." Dawn pulled her helmet back on and grabbed her Gauss Rifle, slipping the spare clips into the pockets of her jacket, also picking up the medical supplies from the floor. "Kid, could you grab the caps?" She asked. Kid nodded, picking up the heavy bag and carrying it along with the bag of supplies. "Dominique, would you pick up my old metal armour?" Dominique nodded. "Anything, Beautiful One." She picked up the armour from the floor along with the Stealth Boy, holding it all in her hands in a pile. Dawn smiled in her helmet, looking at them through the blue digital lenses. "Alright, come on, guys. Let's find a place to crash for the night."
They all walked towards Julian, who was inspecting a suit of combat armour mark two nearby. He glanced at her and did a double take. "Whoa! I didn't realize that that was at the back! I should've looked closer!" Dawn said "Well, it's mine now, Julian. A deal's a deal." Julian shrugged gently, calming down. "You're right, go on, take it. I said you earned it and I meant it." Dawn smiled inside her helmet as she said "Listen, is anybody using the hideout right now? Me and my friends would like a place to crash for the night." Julian thought for a moment before shaking his head. "Not that I know of. Go on and use it, it's fine." Dawn smiled more and thanked him, the group leaving the building. "Follow me, guys." Dawn said, walking onto a nearby street, Kid and Dominique following her.
Within thirty minutes of walking, they had reached the safe house. During that time, Dawn and Kid had learned a little about Dominique. It seems she had been born in the settlement around Vault 15, to the south. She lived there with her family until she turned thirteen, when her father began to believe in the reaver religion. They all began to deeply believe in it before moving to Rister. Dominique was sixteen now. They all entered the safe house, it being a little two-story house. It had simple furnishing, nothing fancy. On the second floor were a few rooms with soft beds in them. Dominique stepped into one, closing the door, bidding Dawn and Kid sweet dreams before doing so. Kid stepped into another room, Dawn following him.
Dawn began to undress, laying down her armour and Gauss Rifle, Kid letting down the sack of caps and the other of supplies, closing the door to the room, engulfing it in total darkness. Standing in her underwear, Dawn stretched lightly, letting out a soft moan. She got onto the bed, Kid undressing as well, getting on it. The two of them got under the sheets, holding one another close. Dawn seemed rather tired, her relaxing in his arms a little more sleepily than usual. Kid lay on his back, Dawn lying on him slightly, her right side on his, her right leg between his, her right arm draped across his body. He raised his left hand to her right hip, closing his eyes along with her. Dawn kissed him on the neck softly, murmuring "Goodnight, Kid..." Kid whispered the same in return, resting the side of his head close to her's. The both of them quickly fell asleep.
He was sprinting along a white hallway. "Stop him!" People shouted. He was running faster than he ever had before, breathing heavily. White walls. Always white walls. Green fluid slowly dripped down a small cut in his left forearm, burning his skin with pain. Footsteps were beginning to catch up to him. Something rammed into him from behind. Kid turned around on the ground. It was the man with the gasmask! Kid shouted out in fear, the man raising up a half-empty syringe of green fluid, ready to plunge it down into Kid.
Kid's eyes snapped open. He was breathing heavily, but he was still in bed, he was still resting with Dawn. He sighed softly, closing his eyes again. Dawn was already asleep. Not wanting to disturb her too badly, he gently wrapped his arms around her body, making sure not to move too quickly or roughly. Breathing peacefully once more, he slowly drifted back into sleep, resting in the darkness of the room.
