The next morning dawned cold and wet. The two dark elves shook themselves off and, following orders laid down for them by Thiefiell himself, set about the task of making the final push to lay total claim to their victory. Today, it wasn’t just about the light village. Today, Gludio itself was going to fall to them.
Starr stood next to the hell knight she’d been assigned to and gazed over the battlefield. The rain pelted down hard, making it difficult to focus on the figures down below. She, the knight, and several others had planned long into the morning for this battle. And it wasn’t looking good.
The knight turned his head and studied her hard. They couldn’t win this. The dark elves had waged a long and slow war against the castle, cutting off all supplies and starving it’s inhabitants for months. “Go. Run.” He finally muttered. “We’re as good as dead. Go to Aden, you’ll be safe there.” He roughly wrenched a scroll from inside the sword scabbard at his side. The scroll had been blessed by the Priests of Aden and shoved it in her hands. “Take this and go!” There were far too few light elves now. Their numbers had been steadily diminishing ever since the initial takeover.
Starr shook her head and pushed the scroll back. “No, I won’t run awa…”
“They’re coming!” One of the watchmen yelled out.
The knight raised his shield high, deflecting the arrows that suddenly rained down upon them. Starr inched a bit closer to stay under the protective cover of the shield and fired her own arrows in retaliation, losing sight of them as they merged into the rest of the arrows that had been released from the castle’s archers.
The battle was fierce and swift. The defenders found themselves pushed further and further into the confines of the castle. Word quickly spread that some deserters had attempted to flee from various exits and had been brutally killed for their efforts. Some attempted to leave by way of blessed scrolls, only to find that the magic from them had been restricted, lending heavy credence to speculation that the dark elves had found a magic powerful enough to thwart the magic imbued in the sacred scrolls.
Starr quickly found herself dashing through the castle alone, desperately hoping to avoid any dark elven attackers. Her knight and several others had been all been killed and now she was trying to find a way out, the castle had fallen. Stumbling across one of the fallen defenders, she quickly searched the woman’s pockets and satchel for an escape scroll. Finding one, she ripped the seal open and waited for the magic to take her to safety.
And waited.
Nothing.
Cursing under her breath, she stood and began running again. She ran up a flight of stairs and down two more. As she came closer to a set of double wooden doors, the air in front of them seemed to ripple and shimmer as a faint trail of smokey magic revealed the hidden attacker.
“No where left to run.” Nathavin spoke solemnly, looking her over as the remnants of Shin’s spell of concealment fell away. Close up, it was painfully evident that she, like the other castle inhabitants, hadn’t had enough to eat. “You have a choice here.” He rumbled. “You can run, in which case you’ll be caught. You can fight, and lose. Or you can surrender.”
“Or, I can take her off your hands entirely.” Micardrin stated in a low, ominous tone. He positioned himself squarely behind the light elf, using her as a shield against Nathavin’s arrows.
Nathavin’s gaze flicked from Micardrin to Starr and then he relaxed his stance, standing down from the confrontation. “Very well.” If Shin truly cared for the light elf, then he’d take care of Micardrin himself.
Somewhat surprised by Nathavin’s acquiescence, Micardrin guardedly stepped forward. A single blade flashed out and knocked the bow from Starr’s hands in a powerful blow before she could even raise it.
Behind Micardrin, Nathavin could see the faint shimmer of Shin’s concealment fall away a split second before his swords slashed through the air and raked across Micardrin’s armor, leaving deep marks across it’s surface. The two combatants rapidly crossed blades again and Shin shoved Micardrin back and away. Dark magic filled the air as Micardrin called upon the unholy magics and Shin did likewise, both enhancing their natural abilities with the dark energies.
From his peripheral vision, Nathavin noticed Starr reaching for her bow. Moving quickly, he stepped on the weapon, never taking his eyes off the rapidly intensifying fight. He could see other dark elves gathering and watching intently. None of them made a move to interfere however.
Her attempt at escape thoroughly dashed by Nathavin, Starr watched in silence. Whatever this fight was, it was clear that neither of them intended to back down. The swords sparked furiously as they made contact with one another.
Shin grunted in pain as Micardrin managed to land a solid strike behind his knees. His armor spared him from having his legs severed, but it still caused him to collapse to the floor. Micardrin wasted no time and lashed out with a kick, knocking Shin onto his back.
Reflexes kicking in, Shin flipped back upright swiftly and dodged a lethal strike by Micardrin. In doing so, he pulled Micardrin off balance and rammed him headfirst into the stone wall. His sword flashed quickly and impaled Micardrin through the armor.
Silence filled the corridor, broken only by Shin’s labored breathing as he caught his breath.
Looking around, Shin spoke harshly as he ripped his blade from Micardrin’s corpse. “Get out. Leave!”
The gathered spectators hastily left, not wanting to become his next target. Only Nathavin stayed behind.
Starr watched in trepidation as Shin slowly approached her, blood dripping from his swords. Nathavin edged away from them.
Kneeling slowly, Shin snorted at her. “You, you just can’t stay out of trouble, can you?” If he took her in this time, there was no question he’d take her to his bed.
Nathavin quietly left the two of them entirely, wondering if she’d realize that Shin had literally just killed a very real threat to her, protecting her from harm.
Ignoring the sound of Nathavin leaving, Starr focused on Shin. That fight was undeniably different from any other fight she’d seen.
Shin stood slowly, his mind firmly made up. “There’s no going back. There’s no getting away. And there’s no being ‘let go’.”
Starr’s head hung a bit at his words. He hadn’t spoken cruelly, his tones were even and calm. He’d spoken a simple truth.
And it hurt.
Her kind had been defeated. And while he’d let her go once, she knew he wasn’t fool enough to do it twice. Even if he did, word would get out and she’d once again find herself at the hands of another like Micardrin. She sighed heavily, only somewhat surprised that although she was extremely saddened, no tears would fall. She supposed that was inevitable though, she’d cried so much already that she simply couldn’t cry anymore.
“Stand up. While I’d like nothing more than to skip the victory festivities, I can’t.” With his recent promotions came the absolutely unnecessary requirements that he attend such events. At least they were unnecessary in his mind.
Starr stood and followed him through the castle, a bit startled at just how familiar he was with it. It had taken her a solid month to get used to the layout. And then she remembered that he and Nathavin had already been here and killed a number of human commanders. In fact, they had just passed the rooms where a particularly gruesome slaughter had occurred. If he regretted it, or even remembered it, he hid it well.
He found her a dark cloak and wrapped her in it. However, he left the hood down. There were two reasons for this. One, most knew there had been a light elf in the castle at the time of the attack and were expecting her capture. And two, he wanted the others to know that she was once again under his guardianship.
