Chapter Seventeen: The Doctor
Soft chattering filled the blinding white waiting room of Sora's new obstetrician's office. Expecting mothers talking to their husbands, friends, and family. Laughing and worrying together. Sora glanced over at his own silver haired lover and soon-to-be husband, frowning at the troubled look on the elder teen's face.
"It'll be alright." The brunet said softly, laying a hand on a muscled pale arm as he leaned closer to the teen, "You'll see."
Riku heaved a sigh, looking over at his expecting boyfriend. Yes, you heard right. Expecting boyfriend. Long story short. Don't fuck around with magic. "I know." He replied, "I'm just thinking."
"About?" Sora asked, resting his elbow on the arm rest next to his lover's arm and resting his chin in his open palm.
"You know," Riku began, turning to face Sora, "When we go to my Dad's birthplace, we'll have to find you a new doctor." He pointed out, choosing not to mention the real reason of why he was so restless and looked so troubled.
The strange looks being sent their way were anything but comforting. Even though, Sora wasn't showing yet, the other mothers in the room still sent them odd looks which were becoming more and more disheartening by the moment.
Sora slowly nodded. He had figured that. But, it would work out for the better since he was a special case. Maybe Sephiroth's birth people had dealt with something like this before, "Hopefully a private one?" He said, giving his lover a nervous smile.
"Sora Miyake."
The said brunet blinked, looking up at the receptionists' desk to see a woman holding a clip board behind the glass window, "Paperwork, dear." She said, "I need your insurance card too."
Riku stood along with Sora, pulling his wallet out of his back pocket to pull out the insurance card his Dad had given him this morning, "Don't forget to tell them you have a new address and insurance." He reminded his brunet, handing him the card.
Sora nodded in understanding, walking up to the desk and taking the clip board that was handed to him before handing over the card.
"Any new information, dear?" The woman asked, sitting back behind her computer to pull up the brunet's medical file.
Sora nodded, "Uh, yeah, actually." He replied before going on giving her the new information Riku had told him to give.
After a moment of quiet nods and typing the woman looked up, "Alright, dear, go ahead and fill out those papers and return them when you're finished." She said, "A nurse will call you back in a moment."
"Alright, thank you."
As Sora sat back down next to Riku to fill out the paperwork that was given to him, the silver haired teen leaned over, "Maybe you should have worn that dress. I think you could have pulled if off."
Sora blinked, pausing in his hurried scribbles to look over at his silver haired lover, his ocean blue eyes narrowed in a glare, "That is so not funny!"
"Did I sound like I was joking?" Riku asked, his eyebrow arched in question. He had really tried to get his lover to wear a dress in hopes that things wouldn't feel as awkward as they did at the moment, "All of our friends agree that you're girly and could pass as one easily."
Sora twitched, returning to his paperwork, "Alright, you just remember that." He replied.
"I know, I know." Riku said with a melodramatic sigh, "I'll be sleeping along tonight."
A smirk passed over the younger brunet's face, "That's not all you'll be doing~!" He replied in a sing song voice.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Riku asked with a frown, glancing over at his lover.
Sora paused in his writing again before turning to his lover, giving him a huge grin, “Let's just say you'll be getting to know your left hand a little bit better, sweetie!” He replied brightly.
"Oh come on Sora, you can't punish me over something that everybody agrees upon!" Riku exclaimed in astonishment. "How can you look so sweet, yet be so cruel at the same time?"
The brunet simply shrugged, "I dunno, it's a gift, I suppose."
--- --- ---
The playful arguing had ceased between the two lovers and Sora had finally finished his medical papers (Riku finally taking some to fill out himself to help his brunet get done all the more faster) and taken them up to the front desk. Then sat back down to wait to be called.
Fifteen minutes later Riku was getting a little impatient. "Shouldn't they have called you back, by now?" The silver haired boy said, checking his watch to see that his lover's appointment had come and gone about a half an hour ago.
Sora blinked, pulling his cell phone out of his pocket to check the time for himself, "They should have, but there was at least three other women before me." The brunet pointed out, "Maybe they're running a little behind?"
Riku shrugged, frowning lightly, "I wish they'd hurry up." He mumbled under his breath, crossing his arms over his chest as he sank further down into the chair.
"Sora Miyake?"
The couple looked up to see a nurse standing in the doorway leading towards the back of the office, "Sora?" She repeated, her eyes glancing around the room a look of confusion written on her face.
"See? You got your wish." Sora said, grabbing the silver haired boy's hand, "Come on, let's go." He tugged his lover to his feet.
"...W-wait, you want me to come too?" Riku said a bit alarmed as his brunet dragged him towards the door.
Sora gave the silver haired boy a confused look over his shoulder, "Uh, duh." He replied, "It's your baby too."
Riku allowed his lover to drag him back and into a waiting room where the nurse politely told them to sit before she gave Sora another odd look.
"You're Sora Miyake, right?" She said after a moment.
The said brunet nodded, "That'd be me, ma'am."
She looked back at the file in her hands, "But, it says here that you're male...and expecting a baby?" She said, looking up at the couple.
Sora blinked, giving the woman a weird look of his own, "Yeah. I'm a boy and I'm going to have a baby. And, he's the baby's father." He said, nodding towards Riku who waved sheepishly.
"...Okay." The nurse replied after a moment, "Well, go ahead and take off your shoes so I can weigh you." She said, looking at both boys before she opened the file she had with her, "Okay, how's the morning sickness coming along?" She asked as the brunet stepped on the scale and she stepped over to move the knobs to find his exact weight.
Sora frowned in thought, glancing over at Riku for a moment as though the elder teen would have the answer, "It's pretty much cleared up..." He replied after a moment, "Expect that one morning Kadaj cooked breakfast."
"Sora, that wasn't morning sickness." Riku reminded the other, "Kadaj is just that bad of a cook."
"Yeah, I know that now." Sora replied flatly as the nurse scribbled his weight down on a sheet in the file she held.
"Weight gain is normal." She muttered to herself, "The doctor will be in with you in a moment." She said before leaving the room, closing the door behind her with a soft snap.
"I don't like that nurse," Riku whispered, returning to Sora's side the moment the door had closed behind her. "She was creepy."
"She was confused." Sora corrected his lover, "I wonder if the doctor knows that I'm a boy...obviously the nurse didn't."
"Who knows." Riku replied with a shrug, looking at his lover as the brunet took a seat on the examination table, "I'm sure my Dad mentioned it."
"Let's hope he did." Sora said with a sigh as the door opened once more.
“Mr. Miyake? Mr. Tanaka?” A young, brown haired woman said, peeking her head in the door, “Yup!” She said, checking the chart, “How are things today, Mr. Miyake?” She asked, smiling brightly as she walked into the room, the door swinging closed.
Sora blinked, “Uh...fine.”
The woman nodded, “Well, I'm your new obstetrician, Ayumi!” She chirped.
"Are you even old enough to be a doctor?" Riku asked. For some reason she reminded him of Sora. Sora in a dress. He almost laughed out loud at that, but then he would be right back to sleeping alone tonight.
The woman laughed, “Aw, aren't you a charmer?” She cooed, shooing the boy away from Sora, “I'm 32, I graduated from Med school about five years ago. I used to work in the Neonatal Care Unit at the hospital before I worked here.” She said, smiling, “Alright, Mr. Miyake, I need you to lay down for me.”
Sora did as he was told, putting his hands behind his head, "Why'd you quit the NCU?" He asked after a moment.
"I suppose after awhile seeing all of those sick and dying babies it kind of wore me down." She replied, giving the brunet a small smile, "Needless to say, there is no one better qualified to take care of you and your little bundle of joy."
Still wary of the nurse even with her cheery smile and bright attitude, Riku did not move too far away from his lover. "You're not shocked or disgusted that Sora's a guy? A pregnant guy?" He knew he probably sounded like he was being rude again, but he really did want to know.
Ayumi blinked, feeling Sora's stomach to find exactly where the baby had taken up residence inside of Sora, “Well, who wouldn't be shocked that he's a guy.” She pointed out, “He is the first pregnant male in history, mind you. But, how can I be disgusted over the creation of life?”
Sora flinched lightly as his stomach was jabbed and poked at.
“Well, I have to take some blood.” She said, checking her watch, “Then, we can listen to the baby's heart beat!”
But, sadly, the only word Sora heard was, “Blood?” He asked, in a high pitched voice.
Ayumi looked down at Sora, smiling softly, “Afraid of needles, I see?” She asked, patting his shoulder, “You won't be by the time you have the baby.”
"You might need to call a few more doctors or nurses in here to help me hold him down if you really want to draw some of Sora's blood," Riku told the doctor. "Why do you need to draw some blood anyway? And.. .are you really 32? You don't look any older than my one older brother and he's 21."
Ayumi giggled, “There you go again!” She said, swatting Riku's arm playfully as she stepped into the hall, “Can I get some help, please?”
Sora already looked faint, “I don't want them to take blood!” He said, looking worried at his lover who had since walked over to him, comfortingly running his hand through the brunet's spikes.
"The nice doctor lady says they have to, you big baby," Riku said softly, leaning down to press a kiss to his lover's forehead. "Have some perspective Sora. A needle doesn't hurt nearly as much as the first time I took you. Remember? You cried and wouldn't let me touch you for days afterward, calling me all sorts of names like 'beast' and 'jerk' and 'bully'."
Ayumi had stepped out of the room for a moment to round up more nurses to help hold Sora down, the woman came back in with a chocolate icing donut with rainbow sprinkles on top, “Here, Mr. Miyake.” She said, handing him the donut before turning to Riku, “His first Doctor called ahead and mentioned something about donuts and blood so I put two and two together. My little sister is the same way.” She said, setting down a few tubes and a needle.
Sora' eyes went wide, “My favorite!” He cooed, taking the donut before munching on it.
Riku rolled his eyes. "He's so predictable." He said flatly, shaking his head as he looked over to one of the nurses who had came in with the Doctor, "Do you have any smelling salts on hand...just in case." He asked as the woman readied to tubes to hold his lover's blood, "I can hold him down for you to put the needle in, but once it's in....I can't guarantee that he won't go out like a light."
“I'm sure we can find something...” Ayumi said, tying off Sora's arm so she could find a vein, after tapping on his arm for a moment, she found one and set about to cleaning the spot before she slipped the needle in. And, Sora was none the wiser, happily munching away on his donut.
"He never ceases to amaze me," Riku said, his amusement clearly indicated by his tone.
"The last time someone came close to him with a needle, they were left with a black eye."
Ayumi cringed lightly, “I feel sorry for that person.” She muttered under her breath, “But, believe me, by the time this is all said and done, he won't be afraid of them anymore...”
"'By the time this is done'?" Riku repeated, staring at the doctor. "You mean we have to do this again? As in more than once?"
Ayumi chuckled softly, “Honey, he'll have to have blood taken every time he comes in for an appointment.” She said, looking over at the silver haired boy, patting Sora lightly when he began to choke with that revelation, "To run tests, check the proteins in his blood. Things like that."
"How often is often?" Riku asked. "We were planning on taking a trip abroad to stay with my dad's family until Sora has the baby. Will there be a problem if we do?"
“He'll have to come and see me every month up until the last trimester, which is when visits will get closer together...but, since he's a boy, it could be a little different.” Ayumi said, pulling the needle out after she had gotten two tubes of blood full, “As of right now, he'll need to see me or another obstetrician every month.”
Riku sighed. He really didn't know if there were and obstetricians where his Dad grew up. That and it'd be hell to find one so accepting of their current situation. Then again, it was his father's family, so they could very well throw them a celebration party. Riku looked into the Doctor's eyes as something else came to mind. "You didn't scold us for being to young to have a baby..."
Ayumi laughed at that, handing the nurse the tubes, “There's a younger girl down the hall expecting a baby.” She replied softly, “It isn't my place to judge you, it's my job to make sure you're boyfriend here delivers a healthy baby.” She said, patting Sora on the shoulder.
"It's not like we did it on purpose," Riku said rather defensively despite her answer. "I never expected Sora to get pregnant. He's a guy." He conveniently left out the part about him being able to perform magic.
"Exactly. I don't blame you, I can't, because if I was a guy and I was gay...I wouldn't think to use protection either. Because males aren't suppose to be able to carry children. But, I suppose one or both of you are special in some form or another." Ayumi replied, pulling out a small wand, "Now...who wants to hear the baby's heart beat?"
