Chapter Seventeen – Sara Conway
The rope cut into her wrists as she was pulled along behind a large grey wolf, on its back a hulking green form, an orc. On all sides were more orcs, all armed to the teeth. The surprise attack had caught her and her brother off-guard and their foes had used it to their full advantage. She eyed the still form of Foster draped over the saddle of one the horses. Or at least she tried to look at him; the left side of his face had been caved in by a mace. Can the undead die? It certainly looked like it; she prayed the Light was forgiving and remembered all the good he had done in his life. Something warm splattered against her cheek and she glanced over at the female orc that had spit on her. The green skin woman growled something in her native tongue. “Thrilled by your company, myself,” Sara answered, in Common. “Good see you living up to your reputation.” She easily dodged the blow aimed her way. “Perhaps you should ask your friends to help? You seem to do better when you greatly outnumber your foes.” The rope around her wrists jerked pulling her off balance but at the same time aided her in dodging another attack. The orc holding the other end of her leash growled something at his companion; the female snorted and urged her wolf to go faster, taking the lead of the small band. “That tongue of yours will make your end more painful than it could have been, Damned One,” the orc at her side said in Common. “I am no servant of the Lich King,” Sara replied, hiding her shock of being understood. “Says one who bares his mark and travels with one of his Knights,” the other replied. “They marked my face, but not my soul and my brother broke free of the Lich King’s hold. He was once a great defender of the Light, he could have been again.” “He’s dead because of you.” She didn’t need to be told, she had been there when the Horde crashed into the camp. Her reflexes hampered by the dress she was wearing, she was marked as a caster so of course their full fury had been aimed at her. Take out the weakest link. Foster had been their shield for so many years and placed himself between her and harm one last time. Taking the full force of the weapon aimed to crush her head in. Her fists clenched, all that warrior training for naught, she had been useless once again. “You meant to kill me then,” she hissed, “why am I still alive?” “Became clear you have no skills,” the orc replied. “And Gagdush,” the other gestured to the orc holding the other end of the rope, “liked your tits.” Sara’s cheeks flushed as she glanced down at her torn bodice. She’d forgotten for a moment she was indecent, more pressing matters at hand. “Well he’ll need all of you if he thinks he’ll lie with me …” The orc snorted. “Why do you think we’re taking you back to camp? You’ll have your fill of orc cock and then some, Damned One.” “I told you … I’m not …” “Yes you are,” the orc said darkly, “in more ways than one.” Sara fell quiet at that, the orc was right of course. She had been raped by Vance and though it wasn’t time for her monthly blood, she just knew there was a child growing inside her. “After you’ve had your fun,” she said, “you will kill me. I will not have another bastard’s seed growing in me after your plans kill the child within me.” This time it was the orc that looked surprised but she moved her eyes away from him and to the approaching walls of the horde encampment. In the distance she saw movement and for a moment her heart skipped a beat, until a large bird came into view. She had forgotten about Nathaniel. Yesterday he would have stayed at the camp when he returned until he turned to dust, today … he would follow and there was nothing her brother could do against the Horde. Unless, there was no reason for him to attack, with Foster dead there was only one thing preventing him from running away and never returning. With a shout she attacked the orc she had been speaking to, jumping behind him on his mount, wrapping the rope that had gone slack around his throat and pulling it taut. The wolf she found herself on growled and snapped as the thick green fingers gripped her wrist. “What are you doing?” gasped the orc, “you stupid woman.” “Tired of people choosing my destiny,” she answered as the others closed in, their weapons drawn. She had read once when one twin gets hurt the other knows it, she and Jenna had never shared such a bond but she wondered if she’d feel her death. “I’m sorry, Sis, if Nathaniel finds his way to you … please take care of him,” she thought as the orc she choked reached for the knife in his belt. She wanted to shout out words to Nathaniel, just knowing he was close enough to hear but it would alert the Horde that there was another. Just then the blade the orc held cut the rope, tethering her to her captors. As the line went slack his large head crashed into hers and she found herself stunned. She was pulled around in front of him as strong arms wrapped around her. The orc barked something in his native tongue. As the stars cleared, to her disappointment the party had fallen back into place, the only difference now was she rode upon a wolf with her arms pinned to her side. “That was foolish,” the orc repeated. “Why …” Sara asked, “why couldn’t you just kill me?” “Though you humans may not believe it, even we have honor … I will not kill a woman with child. We will take you back to camp, and let Kobug figure out what to with you.” Sara’s breath caught. “Kobug … do … is that a common orc name?” “Heard of him?” The orc replied. “He was quite the warrior in his day, now Uncle just sits around eating boar and giving orders.” “Uncle …” more pieces fell in place, “You must be Skang …” The orc that held her tensed. “My brother had a name … Foster.” Swearing Skang urged his mount closer to the horse that held Foster’s body. Sara grimaced; her brother had smelled like grave moss before his fatal wound, now he stunk even worse. The bile rose up in her throat as she spied blood red leeches on his wounds. She watched the orc as he studied the death marked face of her brother, trying to find the human he remembered. Recognition flashed in his eyes followed by sadness. “He never spoke of you openly,” Sara said, “I only heard your names when I eavesdropped on his late night conversations with Nathaniel. He called you brother …” “Dabu,” Skang whispered. “I did not know …” the hand around her waist tightened. “You and your child will not come to harm, Uncle will see to it.” “I don’t care about the child, that beast raped me …” The rest of her complaint was silenced by a slap that made her aching head spin. “The child has your blood and the blood of my brother … they will have a great life regardless of how they came to be.” Sara fell quiet, arguing would be pointless, there was no way Skang would understand the evil that was within Vance. She tensed as the walls cast a shadow on the party. “I’ll keep you safe,” the orc mumbled in her ear as they rode into the fortified encampment. They were quickly surrounded by the curious and the vengeful. Her brother’s corpse was dumped on the ground, the beast that had been carrying it took a halting step forward and then crumpled as the crowd gasped. The orc named Gagdush approached the horse cautiously and after examining it said something in his native tongue. Sara glanced at Skang and raised an eyebrow in an unasked question. “Seems my brother is rancorous even in death, the stallion is dead …” the orc wrinkled his nose. “The stench …” “Burn them both,” Sara said, “I don’t know what dark powers kept him alive, or what they do to the living once gone. Don’t let them violate him any more than he has been, he deserves that much.” “Zugzug,” Skang agreed. “I will see it done.” He yelled out something in Orcish and the group pulled away from the corpses. With that curiosity denied they turned their attention and ire towards her. Gagdush stepped forward and gestured at her, Skang shook his head and Sara heard Kobug mentioned in the heavy accented orc language. The larger orc grabbed Sara’s arm and jerked her free of Skang’s embrace, he said something and chuckled as he pulled her away. Her protector shouted and Gagdush smirked, grabbing one of her bare breasts and squeezing hard. She grabbed the emerald green arm and twisted, the laughter turned to a howl of pain; a cry that was suddenly silenced by an arrow piercing the large orc’s neck. The sudden attack caused cries of alarm as the crowd tried to find the assailant. The orc fell to the ground, clutching the arrow buried in his throat. Sara stumbled back and Skang wrapped his arms protectively around her. “We’re under attack!” he cried needlessly. “It’s my brother, Nathaniel” Sara said, “please; he’s been through so much don’t let them hurt him.” A second arrow buried itself in the haunch of Skang’s giant wolf mount. The beast let out an angry howl. “Hurt him?” the orc hissed pulling her behind a nearby wagon. There were cries of alarm and Sara saw the others gesturing, following their gaze she spied Nathaniel on the roof of a nearby hut, another arrow nocked in his bow. “I’m sorry,” Skang whispered, “I cannot protect him … they are lost in blood lust …” Suddenly the air filled with a powerful aura, a very dark force. Beams of dark energy erupted and Sara let out a small cry of her own at the source. His black armor glowed, his long white hair whipped around in the unnatural winds he was making. Tentacles of darkness wrapped around the dying Gagdush and Sara watched the emerald flesh turn black and then to ash. At the same time, the gruesome wound on Foster’s face mended, bones became whole once more. “Ancestors protect us,” Skang whispered. Where the beams of necromancy landed, a bony hand shot out of the earth as Foster reanimated his army of the damned. “It’s about to get really scary,” Sara said. “About to?” Skang growled, “Can you reason with him?” “I’ll try,” Sara said, “don’t let them hurt our brother, or nothing will stop him.” Skang nodded and started bellowing out warnings in Orcish as Sara left the cover of the wagon and raced toward her brother. “Stop!” she screamed to be heard over the roar of the unnatural power swirling around her. “Brothers, Skang and Kobug are here … I’m okay … please stop!” Foster’s brilliant blue eyes focused on her for a moment, as his ghouls circled around him. With a snarl, dark energy circled around her and pulled her to him. She found herself pressed against his armor; it was so cold it hurt, a fact she let him now with a cry. “It burns, Brother, you’re hurting me!” she screamed. Foster startled and pulled back. “NO!” To her horror a large fireball crashed into the thatched roof Nathaniel was standing on, her brother danced away from the flames. Foster let out a feral growl, and reaching out his right hand, dark tentacles shot out from his gauntlet and wrapped around Nathaniel. The elf went limp and allowed his brother to jerk him free of the fiery roof and down to the ground beside them. “Brother!” Sara shouted as the troll mage that had casted the first fireball stepped forward his hands blazing. “Behind me!” Foster ordered. Sara joined Nathaniel as Foster stepped forward, chanting. The first fireball seemed to evaporate when it struck, the dark armor. Unfazed the mage threw a second spell, this one exploded before it landed when Foster cast the exact same spell. Foster pulled the rune blade from his back as Skang moved and placed himself between the Death Knight and mage. At the same time Nathaniel left the safety of their brother’s shield and dropped to one knee bringing his bow up. Foster moved a hand in front of the notched arrow. “Time has been kind to you, Brother,” Foster said in his death haunted voice. “Wish I could say the same,” Skang said. “What happened to you, my brother?” “Death claimed me as his servant,” Foster said, “in time I told him to go to hell, and my will is my own now.” There was more shouting and Sara felt the chill around them intensify as Foster prepared himself for battle. There was a bellow in Orcish and a moment later it was repeated in Common, “Stand down, damn it, what in the hell is going …” The orders died on the lips of the grey haired orc bellowing them. Foster said something in the tongue of the Orcs. A look of shock crossed the face of the newcomer, which Sara assumed was Kobug. The troll mage gestured to ghastly remains of Gagdush. Kobug glanced at Sara, his frowned deepened. “I would have done it myself,” he said in perfect Common as he stepped forward, unafraid. He took off his cloak and moving behind Foster, wrapped it around her shoulders. “Follow me,” Kobug ordered. “And you,” he said gesturing to the troll mage, “put out that damn fire before you burn the encampment down.” Sara looked up at Foster, who nodded. “We’re safe for the moment, Sis,” he said as the ghouls he summoned buried themselves back into the earth. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
