Goryn’s troops had made very good time and he was looking forward to coming home to his castle. He watched as Caellia playfully bantered with a few of her brethren. The pain of the recent events still had not left her eyes however and they retained a haunted quality to them. As they walked further down the road and approached the crossroads at the ancient battleground and the forest of outlaw they were met by an impressive force.
Caellia stopped her banter and stared quietly, those were Aden’s banners the warriors were carrying and they were in an aggressive formation. She moved quickly to Goryn’s side, “What’s going on?”
“I’m not sure. They were not supposed to meet us here.” Goryn didn’t like this. He slowly walked forward, quickly estimating the size of the Aden forces and not liking the numbers. His forces had been depleted keeping the dwarves alive; they could not combat Asadar’s force. He came to a stop as a number of the men parted, making way for King Asadar to step through. Goryn’s eyes narrowed as he watched the older King swagger forward slightly.
“Goryn,” Asadar began in an amiable voice, “it’s good to see you’ve made it.” He walked forward cautiously. He could not afford to give his men the signal to attack at the wrong time due to a misunderstood signal. He had to have Caellia safe before they attacked. He looked around for Caellia and finally spotted her as she shrugged off the restraining hands of her guards. “Caellia.” He gave a low bow in greeting to her as she daintily approached them.
Caellia watched the human for a moment as he knelt before her, something wasn’t right. His mannerisms were too stiff and stilted. He was hiding something, she was sure of it. “Rise,” she paused a beat as she recalled his name, “Asadar. You have no need to bow to me.”
Asadar gave a slow smile and said softly, “How perceptive of you.” He watched as Caellia’s eyes glittered with ill hidden annoyance at his arrogance. “Goryn, might I have a word with your,” he paused, “intended?”
Goryn could find no legitimate reason to deny the request. “Of course King Asadar.” He ground his teeth in frustration.
“Caellia, would you follow me please? I have something I would like to show you.” Asadar almost laughed, this was too easy. Goryn couldn’t deny the simple request for risk of seeming irrational, not that it would matter anyway. Goryn would die this day. Asadar had made sure his most trusted troops understood that.
“Of course.” Caellia responded warily. She glanced back at Goryn trying to find some clue as to what she should do. He gave a nearly imperceptible nod, reassuring her that no matter what happened, he would come for her.
“Excellent!” Asadar continued to babble incessantly as he led her farther away from the battlefield. When they had reached the back of his forces he turned and gave her a smirking smile. “Ah Caellia, you truly are a beautiful woman.” He gestured to the casters around him and they immediately placed spells on Caellia to hold her in place. “Goryn would never be able to fully appreciate you.” Asadar sidled closer to her magically bound form. He correctly interpreted her questioning glare and answered her, “I do this because I will allow neither Goryn, nor the light elves to threaten my power.” His face became one of lunacy as he gave the orders to attack Goryn’s men.
Caellia watched in horror as Goryn’s troops fell under attack. They couldn’t survive this! She struggled futilely against the magic binding her. Her blue eyes snapped to Asadar as she heard him chuckle at the sight of his men attacking Goryn’s ill prepared troops. Tears streamed down her cheeks in anger as she heard the sounds of battle being waged and her not able to help.
Asadar turned to her as he heard her strain against the spells and laughed outright at the sight of the enraged elf. He reached his hand out and lightly ran it through her hair while stating, “Don’t worry; Goryn’s death will be swift.” He then laughed again and turned back to watch the slaughter.
Caellia turned her head as far as it would go to try to catch sight of Goryn. The casters recast the spell of rooting when they noticed she was beginning to break free of the spell. Caellia then turned her cold, ice blue eyes on the casters with a look of pure fury and summoned her own magic shield, a spirit barrier. She watched in smug satisfaction as the casters attempted to place the rooting spell on her again and failed as she broke free of the one already in place. She swiftly pulled her dagger out of its hidden sheath and killed them both quickly before turning to Asadar himself.
Asadar heard Caellia break free of his prophets spells and turned to face her as she charged him. He brought his arm up in time to block the daggers deadly arc, but too late realized that she had feigned the blow so that she could dodge around to his right side and speed past him.
Caellia passed many of Asadar’s troops, dodging swords, shields, daggers, and spells. She was looking for any archers, she needed a weapon she could really use, and she wasn’t picky who she took it from. She stumbled and hit the ground hard just as a raging inferno blasted its way past her toward one of her brethren. She watched as the spell singer cast his own spell, causing a column of water to collide with the fireball. She watched for a few seconds more as it became painfully apparent that his magic just simply wasn’t strong enough and succumbed to the powerful sorcerers magic. Caellia closed her eyes briefly before she stood up and began her search for a bow anew.
Goryn was locked in combat with two gladiators and a dark avenger. His pole arm swung mightily, but he was taking too many injuries. With a final blow from his pole arm one gladiator fell to his death, however, the second gladiator and the dark avenger remained. He scowled at them for a second, considering his options.
Caellia hoisted the large, heavy bone bow and prepared to fire. She had never used this type of bow before and was unfamiliar with the large triangular shaped grip and had been extremely hesitant to use it, but she had not seen any other archers around to find a different bow. She had used all her skill and cunning to get close and land several blows with her dagger before the hawk eye had fallen. It was then she had spotted Goryn and all doubts left. She took aim at the second gladiator and fired two shots in rapid succession before stopping to look him dead in the eye as he turned to face her, before she strung the bow again, “Your opponent is me.”
The gladiator turned to face her, swinging his swords in consideration. He was not supposed to kill her, but how was he supposed to stop her without killing her? He ignored the pain the two arrows she’d shot at him were causing as he weighed his options. Rushing her would give him no real advantage, at least not at first. He decided on his plan and focused his energy on his swords before releasing it in a powerful blast of sound.
Caellia released her arrow at the same time the gladiator released his sonic blast and dodged swiftly to the side, her delicate ears ringing from the sound as it rocketed past. She didn’t have time to check on Goryn until several long minutes later and saw that he had just finished killing the black cat and was searching for her.
“Caellia,” Goryn called, “you have to leave now!” He overrode her protestations, “I will come for you! I promise you!” He did not tell her that he’d been fatally wounded by the cat and that it was taking all of his strength to stand upright.
“NO! I won’t leave you! Not again Goryn!” Caellia felt tears sting her eyes as she looked upon Goryn’s pain filled face.
“Caellia you have to leave!” He struggled to stay on his feet. He allowed the tears to fall freely as he pulled her chin up and gazed into her face for what would be the last time. “Caellia, I love you more than my own life. Please, go!”
“Where will I go Goryn? I have nowhere to go!” Caellia didn’t like the way he was speaking. It was as if he’d never see her again and he knew it. “You can’t leave me here!”
Goryn pushed her away from him roughly and picking her hands up, brought the bow into her line of sight. “You have everywhere to go Caellia, use this and use it well. Run to the old bandit stronghold and hide. I will send help for you.” He shoved her further away from him. “GO!”
Caellia fell backwards a few paces before catching herself. She tried to go back to Goryn but he swung his pole arm at her to keep her at bay. “Goryn, I love you! Please come back for me! Please!” With one last look, she raced away through the trees, her tears the only trail she left behind.
