Shin glared at the crowd of warriors assembled on the grounds of the castle. The victorious roar when they’d seen Starr next to him had been nearly deafening. Gritting his teeth, he stepped away from the battlements, pulling her with him and out of sight of the crowd. Throwing a look at Nathavin, he indicated with a nod of his head that he was taking Starr back inside.
“Where were the rooms you were given?” Shin asked, hoping the rooms hadn’t been too severely damaged. Or worse, had corpses in them. He preferred that she have somewhere she felt at least somewhat comfortable with and the most logical choice was the quarters she’d previously occupied.
“This way…” Starr replied, her tone muted and soft. She carefully picked her way through the still bloodied castle, determinedly refusing to look at the bodies they passed. However, as they neared her quarters, she caught sight of the hell knight who’d made it is own personal duty to protect her.
She froze in place, staring at the now lifeless body, the eyes still open and gazing unfocused at nothing. His armor had been battered to the point of uselessness, several pieces of it missing altogether. And the injuries he’d sustained were horrific. His shield lay in pieces scattered around him and his hands were grasping at a sword that had been plunged into his chest.
Her fingers curled into fists at her sides as she suddenly screamed, the anger, frustration, and sadness finally overwhelming her. When she finally fell silent, she paced to the knight and closed his eyes, murmuring a soft prayer. Turning an angered glare on Shin, she spat viciously, consumed by her emotions. “I want him buried!”
“You have my word.” Shin replied as calmly as possible, resisting massaging his ears. As she turned and continued on, he stole a quick glance at the knight. Who was he to her to have elicited that response? He’d seen him with her on several occasions, had the two grown close, intimate even? He mentally shrugged the questions away. Whatever the human had been to her no longer mattered. The knight would be buried and she’d be able to visit the gravesite to say her final farewell and that would be the end of it.
As they rounded a corner, Starr sighed heavily. The castle’s king had put her in one of the most secluded parts of the castle as a measure of giving her privacy and it had paid off in a rather unexpected way. It had received very little damage. The door had been broken down and the room had clearly been searched, but otherwise had received almost no damage.
Shin’s brows furrowed slightly in remembrance. When he and Nathavin had been here before, this hadn’t been a set of living quarters. It had been a rather large library, filled with spellbooks and scrolls. It had been rarely used, only the two healers and the most powerful sorcerers had ever made use of it that he and Nathavin could tell during their mission.
The room had been quickly repurposed and divided into a set of living quarters. They’d hidden her in a part of the castle that would draw the least suspicion, ensuring that it would be one of the very last places to be searched. Clever.
Glancing around, he noticed that absolutely nothing pointed to a light elf living in it. The armor that lay within was designed for a human, and the scrolls that littered the floor were of human scripts. The ruse had even encompassed the items within. Clever and thorough.
Starr made her way through the quarters and found that the small sleeping chamber was also relatively intact. Once again though, the door had been violently kicked in and destroyed. She sensed Shin come up behind her and peer over her shoulder without getting too close.
He kept his voice low. “Rest. No one will disturb you.” Without another word, he turned and left the chambers and returned to the main area. Looking around, he found a comfortable looking chair and positioned it so that he could see both the outer doorway, and the doorway to the sleeping chamber. Sitting down, he settled in and closed his eyes. His ears however were attuned to her every move.
As he’d surmised, it took her hours to settle into sleep. And it was anything but peaceful. She woke several times, sometimes with an angered shout, sometimes with an anguished sob.
Meanwhile, he kept watch over the door as he wondered how best to gain her trust. Probably the best way was to remove her from the situation for the time being. Given his recent rank promotions, he could now silence those who would question his motives for hiding away the most visible sign of their victory.

After the passing of a few days, days spent in near total silence with almost no communication between them, Shin brought Starr to one of his favored spots. He’d found it quite by chance. It was a cave located behind a waterfall. He’d been attacked upstream of the waterfall, and during the fight had gotten caught in the powerful current and pulled over the edge. When he’d fought his way to the surface, he’d ended up behind the waterfall, discovering the cavern.
Luckier still, he’d found a way in and out of the cave without having to go back in the water. With effort, and considerable adena to select dwarves for their services, he’d managed to convert it to a personal hideaway, with all the comforts of home.
As Starr went and began exploring the space and getting herself familiarized with it, Shin began unpacking their supplies. He hadn’t needed to pack much, the hideaway was largely sufficiently supplied. Most of what he’d brought was smoked and cured meats along with other foodstuffs as he still didn’t fully trust her to not run off while he was hunting.
The other things he’d brought was a variety of potions and other herbal goods from Valekinsia. Most were for minor aches and pains that lingered from the battle or from injuries that they might acquire while here. But the one that bothered him was the rabenda, or lavender, as the light elves called it. He stared hard at the vial containing the dried purple flowers of the detested plant.
Valekinsia swore that light elves used it to relax, something he fully knew, now. She also swore that it could be brewed into a drink and consumed. And she had assured him that she had stressed to Starr just how important it was to only drink it and to never again use it as she had previously. As long as he was outside the cavern it would safe for her to brew it, drink it, and then him re-enter the cavern without having to endure the effects of it. He shoved the vial back into the satchel, his lips curling in distaste. Prior to that incident, he hadn’t had any strong feelings regarding the plant one way or the other.
Meanwhile, Starr stared out at the water. She felt lost. Stealing a look at Shin, she was grateful he’d taken her away from the castle. Away from the dark elves. And he had managed to scrounge up some more decent clothing for her. But none of it was armor, or even magician’s wear. Just simple garments. With a sigh, she sat next to the water, folding her knees to her chest with her head bowed. And Shin left her alone for the night, and the whole of the next day.
However, the third day was another matter.
She was wading in the shallow water, enjoying being in the sunlight when she heard his voice.
“This situation is not going to change. For either of us.”
She turned to look in his direction although not directly at him.
“What say we try this again? Hm? We can’t change the past, but we can make a new start.” He fully expected her to turn her back on him. Strangely, he found he kind of wanted her to have a biting retort. The morose silence was beginning to worry him.
“Not like I really have a choice.” She finally replied, her voice plainly unhappy.
“You always have a choice. You can choose to make the best of the situation, or you can choose to make a bad situation worse.” Was his even reply. “I know which one I’ve chosen. Which will you choose?”
Starr’s gaze dropped to the water, pondering her answer for a moment. Working against him hadn’t accomplished anything, she was essentially right back where she’d started where it concerned him. Except now, there was nothing at all left to try to return to, nothing to try to save. And while the humans were kind and had made clear they would accept her, and any other light elf fortunate to have escaped, they were also so short lived that living amongst them would be too difficult. Any friends she made would die long before her. She would live in an endless cycle of watching her friends be born, live, and die. Over and over. And the same would go for any human that she might find love with. They’d be born, live, and die.
The heartache would never end and it wasn’t a future that she looked forward to.
Unless she found a way to live with the dark elves, her long life would be very sad, or very lonely. Or both.
Coming to a decision, she finally looked at him directly, the first time she’d done so in long time, and then motioned with her head, indicating their location. “How did you find this place?” She wasn’t sure if she was really interested in knowing how he’d found it or not.
Shin felt his spirits lift. Whether her interest was genuine or contrived, he didn’t care. It was a start.

“If he manages to gain her co-operation, you will train her to live amongst us.” Nathavin spoke quietly and somewhat tersely.
Aleyel nodded, recognizing that this was not a simple request, but an actual order from her commanding officer. “As you command.”
Nathavin nodded, glad that she was able to walk the fine line between subordinate and lover, never allowing her personal feelings to interfere with her professional abilities. Perhaps, if it ever got that far, she could teach Starr how to do the same for Shin.
“She must be trained in such a way that she will not falter. If we are to be successful, she absolutely cannot fail.” Stressed Nathavin. He’d had it with Thiefiell and the others. They were now discussing expanding their empire even further. He had no problem with expanding their dominion and influence.
But Thiefiell had become overbearing. And infighting between him and the other council members was beginning to affect military operations. They could not decide amongst themselves on how to proceed. This had lead to conflicting orders being passed down to differing branches of their forces. And it had almost cost them Gludio.
He had enough supporters that he could ascend to take the Lordship, a long unused title and rank. But it would require killing the current Council, and Thiefiell himself. No small feat.
And he’d decided that Starr would play a rather significant role in the overthrow. Light elves were revered for their swiftness. He’d seen her on the battlefield and the speed with which she could fire the bow was more than just a little impressive. But he was more interested in her potential to wield a dagger.
Properly trained, he believed that she’d be particularly lethal with a dagger.
He was convinced that in the fight to overthrow Thiefiell, she’d be largely overlooked by most of the guardsmen. Thiefiell’s own words and constant dismissiveness of light elves in general had all but assured she’d be left alone. And that made her the most likely one to be able to get close enough to kill him. But she had to be swift, and she had to be able to survive long enough to get there.
And she had to be absolutely lethal, killing without hesitation when ordered.
She also had to be able to kill with just one strike. Because she’d never get a second chance at it. Once the guardsmen determined that she was the attacker they needed to stop most, they would attack her enmasse.
If he could get her trained to that point, and partner her up with Shin, then he’d surely have one of the best assassination teams to have ever walked the realm. And that alone was reason enough to train her.
