Karidormi soared over the mushrooms that made up the canopy of Zangarmarsh, making her way back toward Hellfire Peninsula. She didn't like being so secretive now that she had companions, especially because Wrathion was with her, and he'd had enough people betray him for a lifetime, but she couldn't risk them. She had to trust that they'd continue on without her, and she'd catch up to them after she settled that niggling voice in the back of her mind. You're being followed, it said. You need to make sure they can't find you.She didn't know if the voice in the back of her mind was telling the truth or not, but she didn't want any unexpected surprises coming up behind them. The bronze dragon soared over the thorny tunnel where the ravagers made their nests and alighted on a cliff overlooking the flat plain of the western part of the Peninsula, stretching to the east.
She didn't see anything except ravagers and felboars and other creatures going about their lives. She saw the occasional blood elf or Draenei making his or her way to wherever, but she didn't see anything resembling an Orc or anything that could pose a true threat. Karidormi arched her neck, then shook herself. Maybe the voice in her head was just a hidden worry. The two dark shaman that had come after them were gone, and they weren't coming back. Even if they were missed, she doubted Khargol would send any more after them. It would be much easier to wait for them at the Dark Portal. They would have to return there, because it was the only way back to Azeroth from Outland. Karidormi stretched her wings, preparing to take off. She had to catch up to the others as fast as she could.
As she launched into the air, something caught her eye. She headed toward it, curious as to what it was. She stayed aloft just in case whatever it was was dangerous. As she grew closer, she realized that it wasn't an Orc or human or any of the known races of both worlds. She soared a little closer, then hurriedly flapped her wings, trying to gain altitude as quickly as she could. It didn't stop the elemental from attacking. A great jet of molten rock seared the bottom of her right wing as she tried to dodge, making her hiss in pain. She watched in horror as the elemental shifted right before her eyes, changing from a hulking, land-bound beast to an aerial one. Molten wings erupted from its back, spraying molten rock everywhere. It sprang into the air after her, racing toward her with all the speed of a goblin rocket. Karidormi rolled to avoid being hit dead on, but she still felt the searing heat of the elemental as it scraped past her.
She sucked in a deep breath of air, filling her lungs with as much air as she could. The elemental dragon roared after her, passing so close that she could feel the heat from its body. Karidormi rolled onto her back, right beneath the elemental, and unleashed the breath she'd been holding. Golden sand streamed from between her teeth, covering the elemental's chest and part of its left wing. The sand turned molten from the heat, solidifying into glass. Karidormi turned abruptly, swinging her tail toward the molten parts of the elemental's chest. The glass shattered immediately, leaving open the elemental's molten insides. Karidormi whirled around in the air, rising above the elemental dragon as fast as she could. With a howl of rage, it followed her.
Karidormi narrowed her eyes to slits and started taking shallow, quick breaths as she strove to get higher into the air. She felt a searing blast of heat against her flank and banked right, trying to get a good look at her enemy. She fought to get higher, where the air was thin and cold. Her breath formed a cloud over her nostrils; any higher, and she would begin to freeze! She turned over onto her back and flapped her wings, staying motionless as she focused on her enemy. The elemental had slowed considerably, just as she thought it would. Being made of molten rock and fire, its life expectancy up here in the cold was considerably shortened.
The area she had exposed was already frosting over. Soon, the frost would enter the cavity and begin to freeze its innards. She gave one last heavy flap of her wings, then angled herself to dive. The elemental dragon roared, spewing smoking rock that rocketed toward her. Karidormi took the hits, as painful as they were, then barreled right into the elemental, tearing at the frosted portions of stone with her talons. The elemental attacked in return, fire and stone claws tearing at her bronze hide. Karidormi roared as one of her enemy's talons managed to tear a long gash on her side. Blood poured freely from the wound, making her scales slick. The pain was incredible; Karidormi almost lost her grip on the elemental. She brought her hind legs up between them as best she could, then kicked as hard as she could, tearing away icy stone. The elemental dragon roared and fought to retain its grip on her, but Karidormi gave one last titanic shove and dislodged her enemy from her.
As soon as she was free, Karidormi dove for the ground as fast as she could. She heard the elemental monstrosity give chase, so she rolled onto her back and unleashed another devastating breath attack. This time, her aim was slightly better and she hit the elemental in the face. The sand clogged its eyes and open mouth, clinging to its open maw and down its gullet, making the creature writhe in the air. Like the rock it was made of, it plummeted down past her, gaining speed faster than any living dragon could hope to achieve. Kari dove too, just to make sure the elemental didn't recover. At the last moment she snapped open her wings and rose quickly, barely making it in time. Her enemy wasn't so lucky. It crashed into the broken soil of Hellfire Peninsula, rock and sand exploding everywhere.
Karidormi landed only a few feet away, and slowly changed forms. It didn't make her wounds any less severe, but she was able to at least stem the blood flow enough that she wouldn't faint halfway through her flight to catch up with her friends. She hobbled closer to the fallen elemental, unsure if it was truly destroyed or not.
The impact site looked like a small meteor had crash-landed, flinging debris every which way. Karidormi saw the elemental had shattered; the biggest piece was an obsidian stone heart, which was a spider's web of cracks. She could feel the corruption pouring off it in droves. Karidormi pressed her hand to her thigh and felt blood seeping slowly between her fingers. She calmly took her hand away from her leg and flicked her blood toward that cracked obsidian heart.
The heart exploded.
Karidormi fell backwards with a short scream. A sinister cloud of black/green smoke trailed up into the sky, and as Karidormi watched, she swore she could see Khargol's eyes staring back at her. Then the smoke dissipated, leaving no trace behind.
Karidormi slowly pushed herself up and stood, staring at the crater that marked the elemental's grave. If Khargol had enough power to create a monstrosity like that, what else could he do? Who else could he harm? It was clear that Khargol also wasn't waiting for them to return. Likely, he had his men stationed near the Dark Portal, fashioning these elemental beasts with the intent of sending them through and sending them after Karidormi and the others. She slowly changed form, her body aching from the battle. At least the blood had stopped flowing; she'd have to treat it later, away from the others, where she wouldn't be badgered by questions.
She cast one last look toward the horizon, almost expecting another attack. Then she launched into the air and winged toward the Blade's Edge Mountains, flying slowly so as not to agitate her wounds too much. The last thing she needed to do was give her enemies a blood trail to follow.
