**Installment 18**
Nathavin silently watched from his hidden position behind a large tree. Goryn, King of Oren, was being mercilessly tortured by Asadar, the King of Aden. Judging from the injuries that were visible on Goryn he shouldn’t be alive. Nathavin could only surmise that the potions the mages were forcing down his throat were sustaining his life, but just barely. It was obvious that Goryn’s forces had come under attack from Asadar, but why? Shaking his head in frustration, he slipped quietly closer in an attempt to hear more of what was being said.
Goryn spat blood as Asadar’s fist connected once more with his cheek. “Where is Caellia?!” Asadar roared at Goryn. Goryn turned his head back to Asadar and glared stonily at the demented King, remembering the scroll that Asadar had read concerning the odd alliance between the elven races from long ago. He never knew that Asadar had become so paranoid over his power. He thought back to Caellia, who should be at or near the stronghold by now. He’d have to break his promise to her and that hurt the most. His head snapped backwards as the mage forced more of the dreadful potion down his throat at Asadar’s request.
Asadar stared speculatively at Goryn before deciding on a new measure of attack. “Do you know why I seek Caellia Goryn? Would you like to know why?” He whispered, “It’s all about power. The light elven race is powerful Goryn. Oh not as powerful as the dark elves, it’s simply not possible for them to become quite that powerful. But, if I gain control of the light elves and enslave them to my rule, I can become the most powerful King in this realm. The dwarves, orcs, and dark elves will have no choice but to bow to my power.” He laughed maniacally at his perceived cleverness as Goryn watched him silently.
“Asadar, you are a fool. How do you intend to destroy the dark elves?”
“That is not important to one who is going to die. But know this, Caellia will be my queen, and she will watch her people go to war for me and she will wither as her spirit dies with her people.”
Nathavin had heard enough, Asadar intended on killing his people. He motioned his troops to get in position, strung his bow, and fired. As soon as the arrow imbedded itself into Asadars chest, the healers began to cast their spells of protection and healing as warriors blocked him from further attack. Nathavin cursed soundly to himself, he would not allow that human to live! How dare he threaten the dark elven race? He killed any that dared approach with an icy detachment as he set his fury to the side.
Goryn was still bound to one spot as the rooting spell still had effect when he saw the mithril arrow suddenly protrude from Asadars chest. At first he had thought it was Caellia until the sudden rush of dark elves and orcs crashing through the trees proved otherwise. He turned his face to the left as he heard the rough language of a dark spell being cast near him. A spell howler was rapidly casting a powerful rush of air in a blinding tempest, severely injuring anyone in her way. He watched closely as she cast yet another spell, this time on the sorcerers who were making their way to her. She grinned evilly as they suddenly grasped their throats as they realized no sound was coming forth.
Kattath turned to Goryn; she pondered him for a moment then casually picked her way across the bodies to him. “Where is the scroll Goryn?” She held his gaze without flinching as the sounds of battle crashed all around them. She sighed when he did not answer her, “You will not want Nathavin to ask you. You destroyed a large part of his castle and he is not pleased. Tell me, where is the scroll?” She was taken aback by Goryn’s reply.
“Bring Nathavin here, I wish to speak with him.” He grimaced as a fierce pain lanced through his body. “Quickly, the life potions are wearing off.”
Kattath nodded mutely, her sense of ‘sight’ telling her what it was Goryn intended and immediately left to summon Nathavin.
Goryn fell to his knees as the binding spell released itself. His heart wrenched as he prepared himself to ask the one thing he had never believed he would ever ask. His fingers fumbled in his armor as he withdrew the ancient scroll. The crunching of boots on rough soil gained his attention. Looking upward, he found himself staring into Nathavin’s cold, infuriated gaze.
Nathavin furiously looked down upon the fallen King before quickly looking at the remains of the battle. Asadars men had turned tail and run quickly. Disgusting, he thought to himself. His eyes shifted back to Goryn when he began to speak.
“Lord Nathavin,” Goryn began, “I…” Goryn trailed off, he had no right to ask Nathavin to do him a personal favor, but that was what he was doing.
Nathavin’s eyes hardened, “You what, human?” He waited as the minutes ticked by and still Goryn said nothing. His eyes narrowed in anger, “You waste my time!”
Goryn looked up and finally managed to speak his thoughts, “Nathavin, I know you search for Caellia. I will tell you where to find her but only if you swear on your honor that you will protect her.” He stopped to gauge Nathavin’s reaction before he continued. “I know of the contents of the scroll that was in your castle. I also know what prompted that alliance to begin with.” He waited with baited breath as Nathavin looked at him incredulously. He had thought right, Nathavin had, had no idea why the alliance was supposed to have taken place.
“Tell me what you know Goryn!” Nathavin was so incensed that he had uncrossed his arms and was holding his bow in front of him in anger.
Goryn quickly recited the scroll that Asadar had read for him immediately after his capture. In finishing, “He fully intends to destroy the two races. You must ally with the light elves if both races are to survive.”
Nathavin muttered angrily, “How do I know you speak the truth?”
Goryn passed Nathavin’s scroll to Kattath before reaching out and plucking the scroll he’d stolen from Asadar during the brief fight after Caellia left and painfully tossed it to the elf. “This is the scroll Asadar had in his possession.” A spearing pain tore through his body and he could no longer hold himself up as he cried out and fell the rest of the way to the ground. “Nathavin,” he whispered on his drying lips, “Caellia was supposed to marry you long before I was born. Your history was hidden from you both.” Nathavin had to kneel down to hear the rest of Goryn’s speech, as it was extremely soft as his final moments drew near.
Goryn reached for the piece of leather that was hung around his neck and underneath his armor and pulled it out. A shiny silver arrowhead dangled from the end as he placed it in Nathavin’s hand. “Take this to Caellia; she is in the old bandit stronghold just northwest of here.”
“Why do you tell me this human?” Nathavin purposefully kept his voice controlled.
“I do this because you are the only one she will learn to trust.” He continued, “She never admitted it, but I believe you had an impact on her Nathavin.”
“She will not trust me human.” Nathavin began, irritated.
“She will if you give her that arrowhead.” Goryn’s voice slipped softer, “Take care of her for me Nathavin, from one King to another, please take care of her.” With those words, Goryn passed to the next world.
Nathavin looked upon the silent King in grudging respect, “I will honor your last request, Goryn, King of Oren.”
