Dawn awoke peacefully, slowly opening her eyes. It was around ten-thirty in the morning. Kid was still sleeping peacefully beside her. She slowly got out of the bed, not wanting to disturb him. She slipped her underwear back on, pulling on her pants and doing up her belt, pulling her vest-armour on, struggling for a few moments to zip it up but eventually succeeding. She pulled on her trenchcoat, slipping on her leather gloves a moment later. Looking almost like a shadow of the shaded room in her dark armour, she stood by the bed and looked down at Kid. She knelt down beside him, looking into his face as he rested. "...I won't be gone long, baby...." She said softly. "No nightmares while I'm away..." She raised her right hand to her face, pressing a gentle kiss to the prints of her index and middle fingers, slowly reaching her hand over and gently touching the ends of her fingers to his forehead. She stood up a moment later, grabbing her Gauss Rifle and shouldering it, picking up her helmet while leaving the room, quietly closing the door behind herself.
She thought of nothing but him as she left the building, pulling her helmet on to avoid being talked to by curious people. Nobody would stop her for identification since she was leaving and not entering, so shying away her face would be no problem now. She felt behind her neck and flipped her long hair out from under her trenchcoat, letting it cascade down her back over the black leather of her trenchcoat. Viewing the world through the slightly lit-up blue lenses of her helmet, she couldn't help but think slightly depressed thoughts. She thought about the future, both her's and Kid's. She thought about Dominique. She thought about how New Reno would change once the Wrights had absolute control, whether the city would actually change for the better or for the worse. She thought about how dangerous life in the wasteland was, about how she wanted a safe and happy life for Kid. She didn't care much about anything, not even herself, but Kid was something special.
He was like the one shining light in her dark world. She began to think of how boring a peaceful life would be to her. She wondered for a few moments as to the fate of Ace. Walking along during her thoughts, she was already close to the Desperado casino. She wanted something good for Kid, something better than what the wasteland usually offered to people his age. She wanted to give him the things she could never have when she herself was a little younger: close friends, an abundance of food and drink, proper and constant protection, and the guarantee of surviving through the night. She sighed softly to herself. She didn't know what to do. She reached the Desperado, walking into it through it's large double doors, still thinking, almost walking inside mindlessly. "Dawn!" Someone called, Dawn snapping out of her train of thought. "There you are! Just about ready for showtime, huh?" Dawn looked to the voice's owner near the bar. It was Stitch. Ice, Lana, Krypt, and about seven more Wright soldiers stood nearby.
They were all in their armour and armed with their weapons. Dawn slowly approached them, pulling off her helmet. "How did you recognize me?" She asked. Stitch smiled and said "Keith described the armour you were wearing and mentioned a helmet. I didn't really know it was you, I was just going out on a limb and guessing that it was. Glad I got it right." Dawn smiled slightly. Lana, in a slightly-quiet voice, said "It's nice to see you again, Dawn..." Dawn nodded at her in reply. Ice said "Well, we better get going. We don't hafta be dere for another ten minutes, but might as well get moving, hmm?" Dawn nodded, pulling on her helmet. "Oh wow, is that a Gauss Rifle?!" Lana exclaimed, looking wide-eyed at Dawn's weapon. Dawn nodded. "Yeah." Was all she said. Lana grinned and said "I'm jealous..." One of the nearby Wright soldiers chuckled. Dawn began to leave, everyone following her, the group heading out into the streets and walking for Salvatore's Bar, every single one of them looking like a dangerous and well-equipped killer.
Ace rolled into the outskirts of New Reno, a techno song softly playing from the radio of her Highwayman. A dark look was on her face, her pistol sitting on her right thigh, her Calico Liberty 100 on the dashboard, her M79 grenade launcher resting in the passenger side seat by the opened duffel bag, Ace ready to fire any and all of her guns at any single junkie or shark that thought they could muscle her out of her treasured automobile. The few junkies that were in the streets she travelled along could see the darkness on her face and the potential for violence in her eyes, none of them daring to cross her, most of them simply sitting or standing in awe as they watched the Highwayman gently roll down the street's mostly broken concrete. She wondered if Dawn would be at the Golden Globes studio again. Wherever she was, Ace planned on being much more stealthy with her attack. She'd give no warning as to her presence.
Even if that meant assassinating Dawn with a sniper rifle from a rooftop, it would mean that she would be dead and her revenge would be complete. She slowly took in a deep breath, exhaling through her nose calmly. She'd have to find her before she could do anything. It'd be impossible to remain inconspicuous however, what with her Highwayman. She thought for a few moments. She might be able to drive into a crumbled building near the studio and hide out until she saw Dawn, then strike from the shadows like a deathclaw. She decided against the idea; she didn't even know if Dawn would be at the studio, after all. She suddenly stopped the car, looking through the driver's side window. A junkie sat against a nearby wall, staring at the car with wide eyes. Ace rolled down the window, calling out "Hey, you!" The junkie looked into her eyes a little fearfully. "Y-Yes?" He said. Ace called out "Do you know if Ruby-Red the porn star is back in town?" He nodded rapidly. "Is she? Are you sure?" Ace called out. The man nodded. "Yes, just came into town last night!" Ace nodded slowly. "Thanks." She said a little darkly. She drove off once more, heading around a corner and slipping a little deeper into New Reno.
Kid awoke, rolling over onto his side with a soft exhale before slowly opening his eyes. He sat up in the bed, raising his hands to his face, yawning slightly as he rubbed at his eyes. He instantly noticed Dawn was gone, but he remembered what she had said the day before, about her having something to do the next day. He remembered Dominique taking shelter in an alley by the front of the studio, Kid getting up and getting dressed, pulling on the chest of his metallic combat armour, grabbing his pistol and slipping it into the waistband of his pants. He left the room, closing the door behind him. He left the studio, avoiding looking into anybody's eyes. He left the studio, heading across the street, looking down into an alleyway nearby. "Dom?" He called out softly.
Nobody answered. Kid walked over to another nearby alleyway. He thought he could see a couple sitting down beside one another in the alleyway, one person much smaller than the other. "Dom?" He called out. A man called back to him. "Nope, sorry, bud." Kid made a bit of a curious face for a moment as he thought about where she could have gone. "I swore I saw her walk into one of these alleys..." He thought to himself. "Kid!" He jumped slightly in surprise as she said his name loudly directly behind him. He turned around, seeing Dominique with her hands on her hips. She giggled lightly at his reaction. He smiled a little. "Don't do that, you sc-scared the crap out of m-me!" She lowered her hands from her hips, saying "Sorry, I couldn't help myself. You were looking for me?" Kid nodded. "Dawn's gonna be gone for a while, s-so..." He stopped, not even sure where he was even going with his words. Dominique stayed silent for a moment before she said "...And you don't wish to be alone?"
He shrugged gently. "I suppose...Something like that..." Dominique glanced up slightly at the strengthening morning sun before saying "Well...Why don't we find somewhere shaded to relax?" Kid nodded, looking over to a nearby alleyway, totally empty of just about everything except the ancient brick of the buildings on either side of the alleyway itself. Dominique walked in, stepping into the shadows. Kid followed her, his eyes slowly adjusting to the slight lack of light in a few moments, leaning against a wall as Dominique took a seat across from him, leaning against the wall of the building on the other side of the alleyway, a small gap being between the both of their feet. Dominique slowly pulled off her gas mask, resting it down beside her, on her right side.
She slowly breathed out through her nose, looking up to him. He looked down to her eyes quietly. She smiled gently and tapped one of her feet against one of his, Kid raising an eyebrow slightly, a bit of a smile crossing him, as well. He tapped her foot back, Dominique smiling a little more. She reached a hand up to him. "Sit beside me..." She said softly. Kid took her hand, Dominique helping him sit down beside her, on her left side. She got a little closer to him, touching her side to his, keeping her knees near her chest, her hands on her knees. Kid sat with his legs outstretched, his hands on his thighs. They remained silent, simply staying close to one another, enjoying each other's company wordlessly.
Dawn walked down Second Street, past the Golden Globes studio and the Jungle Gym, nearing the Shark Club. Just across from the Shark Club and behind the Golden Globes studio was Salvatore's Bar. It was a little two-story building made of dark wood, the outside walls being nearly black in tint. On the front side of the building, on a wall near the doors, the words "Salvatore's Bar" were written in bright blue neon letters, even written in cursive to add that special "sophisticated" flair. A pimp and a few of his ladies stood on the nearby street corner, all of them looking at Dawn and her group a little warily. "Everyone, get your guns ready. Lightbringers scorch through armour like a bitch, so you have got to make sure you put the fuckers you shoot down and out the first time you fire." Everyone nodded, readying their weapons. The front double doors to the building were closed, and no outside guards were seen.
"Everybody's on the inside. Mason will be on the second floor. Only room on the second floor is the bedroom Mason will be using. Should be thirteen guys in there, not including Mason himself. Most will be on the ground floor to keep an eye on the bar's patrons. We'll bust in and blow the place full of lead. Anybody gets in the way, well, wrong place at the wrong time, life's a bitch, all that jazz. You guys know the routine by now." Everyone nodded, even Lana, the one that always seemed gentle inside. Dawn unshouldered her Gauss Rifle, ejecting the rifle's magazine and checking how many shots it had left. It had roughly three quarters of it's clip remaining, Dawn slipping it back inside the rifle with a satisfied smile. The group all walked up to the doors to Salvatore's Bar, Dawn opening them calmly, not wanting to alert anyone too quickly. She walked inside, none of the several guards paying attention at first, but as Dawn's group quickly piled inside, they began to glance at her.
Dawn counted rapidly. Ten of the thirteen guards stood at various spots in the room. About six tables were set up on the first floor, several chairs by each. A bar was in the right corner, a bartender just then serving someone a drink. A door was on the far side of the room, Dawn knowing it led to the bar's private gambling room, small and barely holding more than four or five people at a time. A staircase went up to the second floor in the left corner of the room. A few guards recognized some of Dawn's friends as Wright soldiers, grabbing their laser pistols from their holsters, beginning to raise them. Dawn whipped up her Gauss Rifle and fired a shot across the room, blowing through the chest of a nearby guard's metal armour, blood and chunks of flesh hitting a nearby table. The patrons of the room, all seventeen of them, ducked down close to the ground. Everyone raised their guns and fired like crazy, most of the Salvatore guards being killed in just a few seconds.
A few Salvatore guards fired red laser beams at Dawn's group. One of Dawn's group was hit in the side of the face, the affected area turning to ash as they screamed for a moment before falling dead. Dawn felt searing heat and then pain appear in her upper left arm. She glanced over, seeing a charred spot going through her trenchcoat sleeve, a slight burn on her arm from a laser beam that just barely missed her. She spotted the man that had fired the shot on the far side of the room, firing a shot at him, hitting him in the throat and severing his head with the hit. Lana gasped, no longer shooting. Dawn looked over as the last of the guards in the room died. Lana had her hands over her stomach, her eyes wide and tearful, her mouth hanging open. "Lana, move your hands, how bad are you hit?" Stitch asked, pulling open one of his medical bags. Lana shakily moved her hands, showing that the stomach of her leather armour had been ashed through, the laser beam she had been shot with going into her stomach.
The skin around the small circular wound was dusted in ash. Her pale innards were faintly visible. She fell to her knees, collapsing down on her side quickly. "Lana!" Stitch said loudly, getting down by her. Dawn looked to Lana for only a moment longer before she said "Come on, second floor, let's move!" She heard shouts and shots being fired on the second floor, running over with the rest of the group, leaving Stitch and Lana behind. She ran up the stairs. In the room just at the top of the stairs, there were a few bookshelves and tables, along with a few chairs for lounging in. A door in the room led to Mason's bedroom. A guard lay with a slashed throat near the top of the stairs, Dawn looking into the room some more. Krypt had sneaked to the top of the stairs, cutting the guard's throat when he reached the top. He had just uppercutted a guard with his Power Fist, knocking the guard out cold.
He spun to the side as the last guard fired his laser pistol at him, narrowly dodging the red beam of deadly light. The beam flew by Dawn's face, Dawn not even blinking in reaction, the beam hitting the wall behind her and leaving a dark scorched mark in it. Krypt slashed the guard's throat, cutting his wrist as well as he attempted to raise his laser pistol once more. "Nice one, Krypt." Dawn said. He turned to her and nodded. An explosion suddenly rocked the building, almost everyone falling to the ground. Dawn wobbling but staying on her feet. The door that led to Mason's bedroom was blown off it's hinges with a bright light, flying towards Krypt, smashing into his side and knocking him to the ground. A loud laughing came from within the bedroom, sounding like it was coming through a radio of sorts. A heavy thudding sounded out as a large figure walked through the doorway. He looked as if he were made of metal, or perhaps in some sort of metal shell. In truth, Dawn knew exactly what he was wearing: a suit of T-51b Power Armour.
Dawn's eyes widened. With that suit of armour, he was basically a walking tank. Over his right shoulder, Mason was holding a large green rocket launcher. Dawn fired a shot at him with her Gauss Rifle, the high-velocity slug hardly making a dent in his armour. Everyone began to shoot at him, Mason simply laughing as their bullets rolled off of him like droplets of water. "You think you little motherfuckers are gonna be able to take down the Salvatores? Hah!!" He inserted another rocket into his launcher, Dawn warningly crying out "Get down!!" before diving down the stairs. Just as she hit the ground, a massive explosion sounded out at the top of the stairs, Dawn feeling people ramming down on her. Whether they were dead or not, she had no clue. She crawled out from under the bodies, spinning around, seeing all the people that hit her to be dead. Shots and fighting kept sounding out on the second floor. Dawn got up and raced up the stairs, seeing Stitch, Ice, and a few other Wright soldiers left, firing at Mason, dodging his punches and kicks.
It would seem that someone had managed to take his rocket launcher away from him, tossing it to the ground nearby. Dawn eyed it for a moment before rushing past the fighting people, heading into Mason's room. There was a large bed along with several bookshelves lined with books, but several were devoid of literature and simply filled with guns and ammo. She looked along them for rockets, any kind of rockets at all. She noticed two left on a shelf. She recognized them as Rocket Sabots, a rare type of rocket used almost exclusively for penetrating thick metal walls, cars, and other extremely durable objects. She grinned and grabbed it, running back out into the room where everyone was fighting. Mason punched a Wright soldier across the face, seemingly killing him in a single blow, the soldier's body twisting to the ground in a jumbled pile. Dawn ran over to the rocket launcher lying on the ground, unnoticed by all, getting down on her knees by it and loading the Rocket Sabot inside.
She struggled to raise it up on her shoulder, finding it to be rather heavy. Finally getting it in place, she let out a whistle, her helmet pushing her whistle out with a high pitch. Everyone glanced at her except for Mason, Mason not hearing her whistle due to the helmet of his power armour simply not picking up it's high pitch. Everyone ducked out of the way. "Mason!!" Dawn shouted angrily. He turned to her, hearing her. She didn't give him the chance to say or do anything; she simply pulled the heavy trigger. Dawn nearly fell backwards as the rocket sabot burst forth from the end of the heavy green weapon, Mason's eyes widening. The rocket hit him square in the stomach, blasting him up off his feet and back against the wall behind him, the tip of the rocket piercing through the power armour and hitting his actual body within. The weight of the power armour smashing against the wall was too much for the relatively weak wall to handle, Mason going through it and beginning to fall towards the street just in front of the bar.
Right as he hit the ground, the rocket erupted, a moderate explosion ripping through the air. Dawn walked to the hole in the wall, looking down at the scene before her. A small hole had been burst into the ground from the rocket. Mason's body had been split into two halves, his legs lying still on one side of the hole, his torso lying on the other side of the hole. His innards were visible along the ground and in the hole itself. His arms were twitching in the power armour slightly. Dawn raised up her Gauss Rifle, aiming down for the thin black glass visor of his helmet. Now that he was staying still and facing her, the shot would be possible. She pulled the trigger, the black glass of the visor bursting as the bullet flew into his helmet, bursting his head into several pieces within his own helmet. The Salvatores were finished.
Dawn helped Krypt up, Krypt just beginning to wake up, having been knocked out when the door to Mason's room rammed into him. She quickly walked downstairs, approaching Stitch and Lana. "How's Lana?" Dawn asked, Stitch shaking his head softly, keeping his eyes closed. Dawn looked down to Lana's body quietly, seeing her lying with her eyes closed. "I...I tried using a Super Stimpack...It just didn't work...I think even the Super Stimpack couldn't fix the wound...It was almost burnt right through her and made a lot of her ash..." Dawn didn't say anything for a moment, but she eventually spoke in a soft tone. "She knew the risks...She died for a reason...The Wrights have control now, full control." Stitch took in a deep breath and nodded. Dawn slowly said "Look, I...I think I'd just like to spend some time with a friend of mine for the day...You'll tell Keith for me, won't you?...I might leave town again, too...New Reno is starting to feel just a little too hectic these days..."
Stitch nodded. "Right..." He said slowly. Dawn walked outside, pulling off her helmet and gripping it in her right hand. Stepping outside, she was surprised to see Kid and Dominique, both standing just down the street. They looked at her with a smile, Dawn walking around the hole in the street the rocket sabot had made, approaching them. "What happened?" Kid asked, looking at the mangled corpse of Mason. Dawn took in a breath, almost to calm herself down. "The Wrights own New Reno now...That's what happened." She said. "Kid, come on...I think I'd like to go out and get a few drinks with you...Dominique can come, I don't mind. I have to get changed first, though." Dawn added in a slightly weary voice. Kid nodded, smiling a little. Within a few minutes, they were all standing outside the studio, Dawn quickly walking inside and getting changed into her normal clothes, leaving her armour and Gauss Rifle behind. As she stepped back outside, Dawn couldn't help but have a strange feeling of dread wash over her. "What's that sound?" Dominique suddenly asked, Dawn looking at her.
Both Dawn and Kid picked it up. It sounded like a car. It came around the corner down the street, the three of them looking at it. It was a beautiful automobile, heavily customized to look pretty badass. It slowly rolled around the corner and onto their street until it's driver seemed to pay attention to who they were. Dawn's eyes widened as she saw the face behind the steering wheel. It was Ace! Ace narrowed her eyes in anger, stomping down on the gas pedal. She drove towards them, Dawn just then realizing that she hadn't taken her Gauss Rifle with her, having left it inside with her armour. Ace reached her arm through the driver's side window, holding out an M79 grenade launcher. Dawn pushed Kid as hard as she could towards the doorway to the inside of the studio. He stumbled into the studio, crashing down to his back with a heavy and painful thud. Ace fired the grenade launcher, Dawn and Dominique both trying to run.
The grenade it fired exploded close to them, neither of them being hit by shrapnel, only being hit by sheer concussive force, the both of them going flying. Dominique flipped through the air a few times before cracking down on her skull, falling into darkness, falling unconscious. Dawn did a single front flip before crashing down on her back, the wind being knocked out of her. Ace stopped the Highwayman, quickly stepping out with her Sig Sauer pistol tightly gripped in her right hand. She pointed it at Dawn as she marched closer to her. Dawn turned around and began to get up. Ace fired a shot, hitting Dawn in the left shoulder. Dawn gritted her teeth but continued to get up with a bit of a wobble. Ace fired another shot, loudly muttering out "Bitch!" as the shot hit Dawn in the stomach, Dawn stifling a cry of pain as she fell back down to one knee. Ace fired two more shots, hitting Dawn in either of her thighs, Dawn falling down to both knees. Ace fired a shot into Dawn's chest, Dawn falling down to her hands and knees in pain, letting out a cry.
Ace grinned, reaching Dawn, standing over her triumphantly. "How's it feel, Dawn? You've lost now. I've been thinking of this moment for so long, you were sort of hard to track down, but it was all worth it." Ace said maliciously. Dawn was breathing heavily in pain as her blood trickled to the ground. Ace pointed her gun down at Dawn's head, cocking back the hammer, narrowing her eyes with a smile. "This has been a long time coming..." She said softly. Ace suddenly felt the barrel of a gun push to the back of her head, her eyes widening slightly. Ace turned her head to the side slowly, looking over her shoulder. Kid stood with his pistol, pointing it at Ace. Dawn got up weakly, sitting on her knees again. Due to her changed position, Ace's pistol was no longer pointed at Dawn's head, but now to her mid chest, just below her breasts and near her upper stomach. Ace closed her eyes, Kid asking "Ace...Why?...I got Dawn t-to let you go before!..."
Ace opened her eyes a bit. "...I can't let things go...She deserves this, Kid...Don't try to tell me she doesn't..." Kid shook his head. "If you pull th-that trigger, you die next. I promise." He said coldly. Ace took in a deep breath. A shot rang out on the air, Dawn collapsing onto her back, staring off blankly in a small puddle of crimson. Kid's bottom lip trembled for hardly a moment before he pulled the trigger to his pistol, Ace closing her eyes just as he did so. Ace's body fell by Dawn's, even landing on her's slightly, landing on her chest by her in death.
Dominique still lay unconscious nearby. Dawn's friends ran out into the street finally, hearing the shots to be ending. Kid fell to his knees, tears coursing down his face. Stitch immediately ripped open his medical bag when he reached her, saying "No no no no!! Dawn!!" Kid simply raised his hands to his face, covering his eyes and crying powerfully, Dominique just starting to come to, blearily seeing the scene before her as she continued to lie on the ground. Stitch attached three Super Stimpacks to Dawn's left arm quickly, watching as their fluid was injected into her. Kid kept crying, feeling like his world was falling apart, like his life was over...
