Chapter 19: The Needs of the One...
“Away t..m, Miss...ippi on ..nal ..proach,” erupted from the commbadges, startling Taka and the others.
“That was fast,” Erra muttered.
“Alright, people, pack up your troubles, let’s get out there,” Korolevna ordered.
Taka moved to the corpse, picking it up without a moment's hesitation. It felt heavier than when she first went to it, though she chalked it up to the start of some form of fatigue. It had probably been a day since they had arrived on the planet and closer to another half since she’d slept on the Adventurer, so it wouldn’t have been surprising to find out that was the cause. Still, it was; her Andorian nature made her stronger than most humans even after fatigue began to set in.
She’d have to get Tanis to look at that when they returned to the ship.
“I’ll cover behind,” Erra said, motioning for Captain Korolevna to head to the front of the group. “Anything survived and decides to come chasing us, I’ll take it out, sir.” Korolevna merely nodded.
“Let’s not dawdle out there,” Tanis said. “I want to make it to my next life celebration.”
“Who doesn’t?” Erra murmured.
“Now!” Korolevna snapped, charging out into the polaric lightning storm.
Winds whipped at Taka’s face, instantly stunning her for a second. She scolded herself. She should’ve expected that - should’ve known that there would be wind in the midst of the storm, although the lack of precipitation was strange. She fought to press forward against the wind, towards the landing gray hull of a runabout.
“Down!” Korolevna yelled.
Taka looked up in time to drop to the ground. A small, sharp piece of metal flew over her and a shriek erupted from behind her. Taka looked back, seeing Erra clutching her side, the metal jutting from her backside. She returned her look forward, seeing Tanis climb to her feet.
“Erra’s hurt!” she shouted forward. They didn’t hear her over the air rushing around them.
She pushed herself to her feet and moved back to Erra, who had dropped to her knees. The Bajoran panted silently against the wind as Taka stepped up beside her, blood seeping from the wound. Her phaser dropped from numb fingers and Taka sorrowfully looked at the other woman.
“I’ll be right back, Erra,” Taka said.
Erra shot her a grin, “You know, you could be rid of the problem right now, right?”
Taka wasn’t sure whether Erra was joking or being serious, though she didn’t care either way. “We just made a good connection, I’m not giving up on that already.” She returned Erra’s grin. “Besides, Tanis would never forgive me!”
Taka hurried against the wind, fighting with every ounce of strength she had to get to the shuttle. It felt like she was fighting against a the pull of another planet for every step she was taking. She felt relieved the moment she got to the runabout and handed the corpse to Korolevna.
“Where’s Netu?” Korolevna demanded.
“She’s hit with debris!” Taka shouted. “I’m going back for her.”
“You’re crazy! You’re not going to make it back!”
“I won’t come back without Erra,” Taka muttered, more to herself than Korolevna or Tanis. “No one gets left behind!”
She pushed herself away from the runabout and her antennae drooped fearfully, betraying her inner conflict. The push of rushing air nearly threw her to the ground as she stumbled towards where Erra was still hunched over. Something changed behind her.
To most species, it would have been undetectable.
But she wasn't most species.
The formidable Andorian weather and tumultuous blizzards that occasionally covered the planet surface had evolved a species capable of sensing minute changes. She did what her antennae told her. She dropped to the ground, finding herself dragged along and with a face full of dirt. As a metal beam swung over her head with an ear splitting grinding shattered her ears.
“Shran’s Ghost!” The realization of how close it had been slammed into her like a starship.
She scrambled to her feet and hurried to Erra. Her boots slid along the ground as she fought to a stop where the other woman lay. She was sure the Bajoran woman saw some weird cartoon character stumbling through ice fields.
Grabbing hold of rubble, Taka balanced herself and stared at Erra with a grin. “Told you I'd be here.” She looked at the metal embedded in Erra’s back. Blood trickled off it leaving a reddish puddle on the ground. “Come on.” Despite a cry of pain from Erra, Taka picked her up.
The howl seemed to increase as she pressed into the fury. Tiny slivers of debris chipped away at her blue flesh, tiny trickles of cerulean blood seeping from them to be blown away. She could hardly imagine what Erra was experiencing on her shoulders.
“Zh’An, ca… ..inta.. pos...on. H..ry up!” Palmer’s voice growled from the commbadge.
“I'm on my way!” Taka snapped at the wind.
A lightning strike against the metal debris a few feet from her showered sparks. She raised her free hand to shield her eyes as they rained down around her, Taka pushing through them. She cursed as dirt pelted her unprotected eyes, nearly dropping Erra as she ducked to avoid the beam that had swung out to almost decapitate her when she had headed to save the Bajoran.
Taka squinted to see the shape of the runabout sitting in the dust storm. The sight gave her the push forward, adrenaline coursed through her and her body seemed to move on its own. It took only seconds to get to the shuttle, hands pulling Erra off her shoulder as she climbed aboard with an exhausted sigh.
The hatch sealed with a pneumatic hiss before Korolevna turned Lieutenant Palmer. “Let’s get the Hell out of here, Lieutenant.”
“With pleasure, Captain,” the Southern United States drawl replied as the runabout pulled itself upwards, away from the ground. The runabout jerked sharply before Palmer cursed. “Ensign, try to keep these bolts off me.”
Korolevna looked back at Taka. “You’re crazy ass is going to end up dead or promoted, Ensign zh’An. I’m just hoping it’s the latter.” She glanced at Erra, Tanis over her with her medical kit out. “How’s she going to be, Ensign Lanul?”
“She’ll live,” Lanul nodded.
“Good.” The Captain turned and moved to the chairs at the front, leaving the three women in the back.
“Taka, help me,” Tanis motioned to pick Erra up.
Taka picked herself off the ground before hoisting Erra’s nearly unconscious form up over their shoulders and carrying her to the back of the runabout.
“Hold her down against the table.” Tanis injected Erra with a hypospray of something and the Bajoran went limp. “Hold her down, Taka.”
Taka raised an eyebrow, though did what she was told, pressing herself against Erra and pinning her to the table. Tanis’ fingers wrapped around the debris lodged in the Bajoran’s back and pulled, yanking it free from the woman’s flesh, blood spewing from the open wound. Taka’s eyes widened even as Tanis grabbed her medkit and went to work.
“Injuries to the spleen, kidney, and stomach,” Tanis rattled off, as though she was preparing for a midterm and not trying to save someone’s life. “Going to need this, this, and this.” She pulled three things from her medkit before laying them down next to Erra’s quivering form. “Okay, let’s get started.”
