**Installment 19**
Caellia ran for several hours through the dense forest, keeping away from the road at all costs. Several times she had to stop and fight the many creatures that sought to keep her from her destination. The unfamiliar bow was heavy and unwieldy as she struggled to pull the string back quickly. She finally saw the outline of the large building and breathed a sigh of relief as she quickly killed the last of the mahum witch doctors. Tears filled her eyes as she was forced to remember her first meeting with Goryn so many years ago in this very forest. Shaking her head, she quickly sprinted the rest of the way to the building and cautiously stepped inside.
Caellia did not think there would be anyone in the building, but was not going to brazenly walk in without knowing for certain if there was or wasn’t anyone in there. She held her bow at the ready in case anyone attacked her. When she had fully scouted the entire building she finally dropped to her knees and wept openly. “Eva, I pray that you keep Goryn safe. Please Eva I beg of you, keep him safe.” She brokenly repeated her short prayer until sleep overcame her.

Nathavin had silently overseen the burial of the once proud human king. He didn’t fully understand why he had agreed to honor Goryn’s last request, but he would do so. Perhaps it was because the human had been betrayed by his own race, or maybe it was because the foolish King had dared to lay siege to Goddard. In the end, Nathavin had gained a small bit of respect for the human King. His sensitive ears picked up the sound of someone approaching softly and he turned to face them.
“You must go find her now Nathavin. Dark approaches and she will not be fit to guard herself tonight.” Kattath spoke somberly.
A second person, an Elder in the studies of Shillien, also approached. “I could travel with you to aid you. No doubt the Princess will be extremely upset, and will be prone to lash out at anyone. And I suspect she will see you as a person to strike at first, given the recent events.”
Nathavin watched the two of them closely. Having the elder with him would be beneficial, but would do nothing to help gain Caellia’s trust. Goryn had said that she would learn to trust him and that the two races must work together to survive. He was willing, at least for now, to humor the dead King’s wishes. Not to mention that gaining Caellia’s trust would be extremely helpful if he truly wished to take over the light elven lands.
There was also the issue of the old alliance. Even though the original agreement had been long in the past, the agreement still existed. The scrolls he now had in his possession proved the agreement still existed. All the other records had been destroyed, but the humans had erred when they had done that. If all the records were destroyed then that meant that they had destroyed the dissolution agreement as well. Whether the two Lords had been alive or not, a dissolution agreement would have to have been written up and signed by the Lords’ top advisors. His thoughts were interrupted as the elder prompted him for a decision.
“Nathavin,” he began cautiously, “would you like one of us to go with you?”
“No, I will go alone. It will be easier to catch her unawares.” Nathavin replied finally.
“Then I insist you take these potions with you. These are the new greater haste potions we have created” The elder passed several vials of a greenish elixir to Nathavin as he continued. “They will speed your steps in the absence of my spell.”
Nathavin nodded as the elder left without another word. His grey eyes swung to Kattath as she stood quietly watching him.
“Remember Nathavin, you will not gain her trust by frightening her.” She concentrated hard on his aura as it swirled with colors only her gift of sight allowed her to see. The normal shading of his calm, confident blue color was being overtaken by a darker grey shade, the color of confusion. “Caellia will be in grave danger if she is frightened to the point of running blindly.” There were spikes of reddish orange when Caellia’s name was brought up, the colors of attraction. She grinned slowly to herself, he was still confused yes, but the reds and oranges had nearly taken over the grey, if only he’d admit it to himself. “Best be on your way Nathavin, night draws near.”
Nathavin nodded mutely before turning and setting off in the direction of the hut. He chose to leave his strider behind. It would only slow him down as it couldn’t see well in the dark, and he didn’t want to risk Caellia hearing it. As he traveled, he called upon all his skill to see the nearly imperceptible trail she had unknowingly left behind, a small footprint here, the slight bending of a limb there. He took the first vial of potion and instantly felt the effects as his pace quickened considerably.
It wasn’t long before he ran into the pathetic mahum tribe and quickly killed those that dared challenge his passage. He continued for an hour more before he saw the outline of the building in the full moonlight. He stealthily approached the door and swung it inwards. Pausing for a moment, he allowed his excellent night vision to become used to the darker surroundings. There was no one in the immediate room; however he could hear faint breathing coming from overhead. Looking to his right, he saw a set of stairs that led to up to a second floor and a railing that guarded the open edge of that floor. Looking through the slats of the railing he could just make out Caellia’s sleeping form. His lips tugged upward in a faint half smile as she shifted and her silvery moonlit hair spilled down the balcony. He made his way over to the stairs and began to climb upwards. He was halfway up when a board under his booted foot gave a loud snap.
Caellia was instantly awake and on her feet with her bow drawn. She didn’t know where the intruder was, but she was certain they were in the building. Her ears quivered with the strain of trying to hear the location of the unknown being. She finally found her voice, “Goryn?”
A twinge of annoyance shot through Nathavin, “No, I am not Goryn.”
Caellia felt a frisson of terror slide up her back, “Nathavin?”
“Yes, it is me.” He watched as she swung the bow in the direction of his voice, but it was still off target and her arms were shaking with the strain of holding the arrow back. “How long do you think you can hold that bow string Caellia?” His experienced eyes could see that she was struggling with the oversized bow.
She responded by releasing the arrow quickly and replacing it with another as she listened to the first hit a wall. “What are you doing here?”
He scoffed at the question, “I would think that’s obvious. I’m here to reclaim what is mine.”
“I do not belong to you Nathavin.” Her voice gained a slight edge to it as she remembered the scroll. “I will never belong to you.” She felt his eyes on her as he stayed silent. “Goryn,” She began, but he overrode her.
“Goryn is dead Caellia.” He watched her even more closely as her body shook.
“NO! You lie! Goryn can’t be dead!” Her fingers began to slip on the bows grip. “He can’t be!” The bow tilted downward slightly as she struggled with the news.
Nathavin saw his opportunity and dashed up the rest of the stairs swiftly and wrenched the bow from her hands. “I speak the truth Caellia, he is gone.” He watched her for a moment before quietly withdrawing the arrowhead pendant and handing it out to her, “He asked me to give you this.”
Caellia’s eyes caught and held the glittering silver arrowhead as it swung lazily in Nathavin’s grip in the moonlight. “No, no, NO!” She snatched the arrowhead from him and backed away. “Why did you kill him?”
Again, Nathavin felt his temper rise before successfully squashing it down, “I did not kill him Caellia, Asadar did.”
“He could’ve beaten Asadar, I know he could’ve. He wouldn’t leave me out here alone!”
“Caellia! Goryn was dying when my men reached the crossroads. If not for me he would’ve died sooner. As it was, he lived just long enough to request that I give you the pendant,” he paused before continuing softly, “and protect you.”
Now it was Caellia’s turn to scoff, “Protect me? He’d never ask that of you.” She edged closer to the railing. “Why should I believe you? You show up here with a pendant that belongs to Goryn.”
“Belonged.” Nathavin cut in.
“You have kidnapped me before Nathavin, you have beaten me, you have forced me to…” She broke off, she couldn’t even say it.
Nathavin glared at her through narrowed eyes. “I forced you to what, Caellia?” He knew very well what she had been going to say, he hadn’t forgotten that morning either.
“I will not believe you Nathavin, Goryn is not gone. You are attempting to trick me and it will not work.” She put her hand on the rail, preparing to launch herself to the bottom floor.
In the blink of an eye Nathavin closed the distance between them and pushed her away from the railing. “Do not dare think you can escape me again Princess,” his temper was reaching its limits, “I made a vow to a dying King and I intend to keep it, and you.” His voice had dropped to a near whisper as he finished.
Caellia hissed in pain as she landed on the rough wooden floor. “You may be able to keep me imprisoned and bound by your side,” she conceded, “but you will never have my own or my people’s loyalty. Only Goryn will ever claim that right.”
His temper boiled over, “Who ever said I wanted your people’s loyalty?” He sneered at her as he continued. “I can crush your people and gain their obedience without a care for their loyalty.” He stalked toward her, emotions running high. “Goryn asked me to protect you from Asadar, this I will do. But who is going to protect you from me Caellia?”
His soft voiced threat terrified Caellia as she realized she had provoked him too far. She scrambled backward while her hands began searching for the cursed bow.
“You do remember the day you gave your life for his as he faced my bow do you not?” He stalked ever closer. “That agreement still holds, and if that isn’t enough for you,” he pulled the two scrolls from within his armor, “I have here a contract written by both our parents. You were given to me by your own parents in exchange for an alliance with the dark elves.” He listened as Caellia gasped in horror, “This contract can be brought before the five other Kings of the land if need be.” He replaced them back in his armor and watched as Caellia stood upright. He wasn’t prepared for her reaction as she walked up to him and landed a full force, open palmed slap to his face.
“I will never abide by that agreement spawn of Antharas.” She now knew Goryn was truly gone, he’d never allow those scrolls to be in Nathavin’s possession. Her eyes glittered dangerously as she stared into Nathavin’s enraged smoke grey eyes. Sensing he was about to attack she swiftly withdrew her dagger and attempted to strike him.
Nathavin retreated out of the daggers range before he cast a swift spell, causing Caellia’s strength to fail her as she attacked. He waited, staying out of the dagger’s range, until he saw his chance. She over reached and he snatched her wrist with his right hand and pulled her forward and off balance. As she fell forward, his left hand pushed her in the area between her shoulder blades as he turned to complete the move, forcing her to loose her balance and stumble several steps forward.
Caellia was brought up short as she collided with a closed door and her dagger had slipped from her hand when he had tightly gripped her wrist. She attempted to turn to face him and managed to turn half way around before he shoved her to face the door.
He brought his body flush against hers, all sense of reason lost in his fury. “You will regret that Caellia.” He used his weight to crush her to the wall as he started the spell he knew she wouldn’t be able to fight. His hands dug themselves into her hair as he breathed softly his voice completely at odds with the emotions charging through him, “You will relax, your body will yield to my strength.”
Caellia’s eyes widened in panic as she felt her body succumb to the dark spell. She began to thrash against him, trying desperately to break his hold on her. Her body refused to cooperate for long as his hands continued to work through her hair and his dulcet voice continued to weave the magic spell, making it stronger.
“You will not resist me Caellia.” He smirked as her body once more became still, although her breathing was far from relaxed. His hands began to roam to her shoulders as his head dipped slightly to her ears, “You cannot resist, you have no strength left with which to resist.”
Caellia whimpered in terror and confusion. His voice was doing strange things to her. She didn’t think she’d be able to stand upright if he were to step away from her now. She shivered as his hands ran up and down her arms. “Please, stop.” She begged.
“No. I won’t.” He huskily replied, “You must pay for your actions Caellia. You attacked your Lord and for this you must be punished.” He backed away from her slightly and gave a rumbling chuckle as she fell backward to his chest.
Caellia yelped when she felt herself fall back and land against him. She struggled to regain control of her body as she felt him turning her to face him. “Please let me go Nathavin.” She was deathly afraid, she had to stop this now.
“I gave you my answer, little one.” He growled lightly at her, once again adopting the little endearment he’d given her upon their first meeting in Giran weeks ago. “I will not stop until you have been properly punished.” He brought her close to him and tangled his right hand in her hair at the nape of her neck as his left rested at the small of her back. He felt the magic pulse powerfully as his hand made connection with the strongest magic receptor at the nape of the neck. The spell was completely in place now, there was no breaking free.
Caellia felt a surge of magic enter her body and she slowly lost focus as her eyes drifted shut. She knew she was fully in the spells grip and would only be able to feel, hear, and smell her surroundings now. The loss of sight terrified her as much as her loss of mobility.
For long moments Nathavin said and did nothing as he stared down on her relaxed face. As the moonlight shone down on them from a jagged hole in the ceiling he noticed that the tattoo on her forehead was glowing slightly and that the moon had begun to swell outward and was beginning to encircle the arrow. A slight moan from Caellia brought his attention to her parted lips. Without thinking, he captured her lips with his own.
Caellia began to fight the magic for all she was worth when his lips met hers once more. Her mind screamed at her body to move to no avail. She thought of her spirit barrier and began to chant the words in her head over and over again in hopes that it might activate. Her thoughts scattered as she felt him lower her to the wooden floor and cover her body with his own.
Nathavin was lost, this had started out as a punishment for her, but he was beginning to feel like the one being punished was himself. He knew he should stop, but he found that he didn’t want to. Releasing her lips he stared at her closed eyes as Kattath' words came back to him. Did he truly want her trust? Staring down on her he thought of his reaction when she mentioned Goryn. Yes, he wanted her to trust him, as much as she had Goryn. No, he wanted her to trust him more than she had Goryn. Sighing, he resumed his dulcet voice, “Sleep Caellia.”
Looking down at the beautiful Princess he asked her unhearing ears, “What have you done to me?”
