Taking a deep breath, Starr released it slowly, thinking over her next words carefully. “We… we can’t… We can’t do that again.”
Shin’s jaw tightened fractionally but he stayed silent and motionless, curious as to her reasoning, though no less aggravated.
Emboldened by his silence, she continued speaking. “It isn’t right. Wasn’t, right. It was wrong, we shouldn’t have. We’re not bound to one another, or even pledged to one another for that matter…” She listed all the reasons she believed caused their actions to be wrong and then waited for his response.
Shin listened patiently and then quietly repositioned her to stand in front of him while he remained seated. “Firstly, there isn’t a right or wrong here. We’re both grown elves, capable of making our own decisions. Secondly, the measures you’re using to determine right or wrong, are strictly those of light elven persuasion. Whether or not you’re the last light elf, those belief systems are gone as surely as the elders that instilled them in you. The sooner you can let go of all that you knew, the better it will be for you. You. Must. Move. On.”
Although he was slightly concerned about one thing. If she was being truthful about the part about them not being bound or pledged to each other as a reason to abstain from finding pleasure in one another, then she must’ve been at the very least pledged to someone before as he certainly wasn’t the first to have touched her. “Who was he?” He queried softly, curious about the doomed relationship. Was this a love recently lost to, and because of, the wars? Or was this a love lost to some other cause?
Starr sighed heavily, closing her eyes. “He was a Templar of Eva.” The memory of the fight with the dragon swept through her. “We, we were trying to reach a hunting party that had gotten lost. Our own search party got split into separate groups.” The mere memory of the dragon’s roar and fiery breath chilled her to her core. “We didn’t realize we’d stumbled into the dragon’s nest until it was too late.”
She didn’t need to finish the tale for him. She’d made it out, her lover hadn’t. But, he knew the event she was discussing. It was known that a group had ventured too far into Antharas’ lair and woken the dragon. There had been much discussion of who might be responsible and what actions might be necessary to rid Aden of the gigantic dragon. Or if it was even possible to kill the dragon at all. Many speculated that it wasn’t possible, or if it was it would result in incalculable deaths.
However, the dragon had never emerged from it’s nest and the event was eventually forgotten by most of elven kind and the humans who’d existed at the time were long buried now.
Feeling it best to move past the painful memory, he gave her a brief moment and then continued. “We do not hold ourselves to such rigorous standards.”
“They’re not mere ‘standards’! They’re morals!” She snapped agitatedly, unknowingly zeroing in on a sore spot with him.
“Do not speak to me of ‘morals’!” He snapped right back, holding tight rein on his temper. “I’ve seen the ‘morals’ of which you speak. I’ve seen light elves leave innocent children to fend for themselves all because they were born as dark elves! Morals indeed!” He snarled derisively, remembering a time in his own life. A time where he’d been separated from his family, lost in the bewildering place known as the Enchanted Valley.
Chased by Satyrs and vengeful unicorns, he’d stumbled onto a leafy bridge. The creatures didn’t dare set foot on the bridge, but he couldn’t leave it either. After a couple of days, a rather large hunting party of older light elves had come across him. Knowing he couldn’t get away on his own, and not knowing where his own kin were, he begged them for help. Instead of helping him though, they’d hacked at the vines supporting the bridge, causing it to collapse and plunge to the valley floor below. He’d nearly died from the fall itself.
Worse still, he’d been attacked by the creatures that had lain in wait under the bridge, two Satyrs and a several Lieles. He’d only survived because of a elderly dwarf. The dwarf had easily killed the creatures and taken him back to town, where he’d learned that the same elven party that doomed him to die on the bridge had also managed to kill the dark elves he’d traveled with.
Starr recoiled at the venomous tones in his voice. She couldn’t think of a single instance in which she or any light elf she knew would simply leave children, dark elven or otherwise, to fend for themselves. But she wasn’t going to argue the point.
Speaking softly, she murmured an apology. “I’m sorry. Whoever did that, they had no right to leave defenseless children.”
A tense silence fell between them, Shin only nodding his acceptance of her apology.
“It will be morning soon.” He muttered softly, forcing himself to relax and let the matter drop. He lifted himself out of the water and onto the bank of the pool and then reached down, offering her a hand. He laughed lowly in amusement at her obvious reluctance to take his hand. And she was very clearly avoiding looking at him, her face bright red in embarrassment. “We’ve seen everything there is to see, no reason to be shy now.”
She placed her hand in his and stepped out of the water with his help, determinedly keeping her gaze off of him. His eyebrows lifted in surprise as the water froze in place, creating a delicate but subtle sheet of ice that effectively obscured what she clearly preferred he not see again.
“Exactly how much training have you had with spellwork?” He asked, impressed.
“None.” She replied quickly, swiftly making her way back to the cavern and her clothes.
Chuckling to himself, he followed after her slowly. As he’d expected, she’d made her way to the lone spare room he’d set up. In light of recent events he saw no reason for them to sleep apart. However he decided not to push her on it tonight.

The next morning Shin awoke to find a raven perched neatly on a kitchen chair. Attached to it was a silver tube. Taking the tube off the bird, he could see Nathavin’s crest etched into the metal. Opening it up, he tipped it over and a small furled bit of parchment fell out. Unfurling it, he recognized Nathavin’s slashing, authoritative script immediately:
‘You have another month with her on your own. Then she reports to Aleyel for training. As of now, I’m drafting her into our military, with intentions that you and she will be my elite assassination team. The training for her will be intensive and fast paced. Prepare her. Upon your return, you will be immediately sent on assignment while she trains. I have determined that there will be no fewer than five targets to be eliminated so far. Thiefiell must go. And any who follow him must go as well.’
VierCal Nathavin
Shin threw the bit of parchment into the hearth. VierCal, so, Nathavin had decided to take up the long disused title of Lordship. It was now official. He’d begun his military coup to wrest control from the Council of Elders.
Starr gained his attention as she made her way into the kitchen. Watching as she picked up a knife and began slicing cheese for herself, he considered the letter. If Aleyel was training her, that meant she was going to be trained in the use of daggers and other bladed weaponry, similar to his own. It would round out her fighting capabilities.
It also meant that he should begin working with her on the basics so that Aleyel could train her more quickly. Crossing over to her, he covered her hand that was holding the knife and repositioned her fingers. “This is a more efficient way to hold the blade.”
Starr glanced at him curiously, but allowed him to guide her through the motions of slicing the cheese. Unsurprisingly his way was easier, she already knew his skill with both swords and daggers alike. But why had he felt a need to come over and show her when all she was doing was slicing food?
After helping her, he leaned back and watched as she munched on the cheese slices and some bread. “I got word from VierCal Nathavin this morning.”
Her eyebrow raised. “VierCal?”
“Dark elven for ‘Lord’.” Shin clarified.
“I didn’t know he was a lord.”
“He wasn’t, when you first met him.” Shin replied before briefly explaining some of the intricacies of dark elven hierarchy, ending with Nathavin’s intended overthrow of Thiefiell.
As he explained, it dawned on her that since he was good friends with Nathavin, that he was going to be a part of this rebellion. Revolutions were always messy and most combatants died before the conflict was resolved. “And what part will you play in this?” She questioned seriously.
Shin’s response was evenly toned as he fixed his gaze on her. “The same part that you will.” He then relayed the message Nathavin had sent. “Eat, today we will begin with simple bladework and progress from there.”
Her stomach soured as he turned and left the kitchen. She was being dragged into a conflict that wasn’t hers. Cursing softly under her breath, she forced down her food. His tone and gait had clearly indicated that they were going to be training, whether she wanted to or not.

The first couple of days passed easily, with her learning the different methods of holding first one dagger and then two, learning the different methods of combat with each. The next few days were more strenuous as they actually began sparring. Match after match, she lost.
On the last match of the sixth day, she was so frustrated that when she landed on the ground, she flung the dagger at him blindly. Not prepared for the sudden vicious attack, Shin felt the dull blade graze his shoulder. “That’s more like it!” He called out to her, letting her gain her feet. “You have one blade left…” He reminded her. The icy fury in her expression was a welcome sight after seeing her lost expression for so long.
Shin braced himself as she lunged at him, he was ecstatic that she finally seemed to be allowing herself to fully go on the offensive. Their daggers flashed in the air as they struck out at one another. Shin deflected several of her attempts to strike him and then disarmed her.
Stepping away from her and leaning down to pick up the fallen weapon, he was shocked when she spun around and kicked out, striking him. Recovering quickly, he crouched low and then lunged forward, aiming to simply pick her up and toss her over his back and into the water behind him.
As he did so, he felt what seemed like multiple small blades digging into his back as she tried to gain purchase so she wouldn’t land in the water. Her short cry was cut off as she landed unceremoniously in the water. Gazing at her as she came up for air, he felt blood trickling down his back.
He knew enough to know that what he’d felt hadn’t been merely her nails. Those wouldn’t have torn through the light leather armor he’d donned for their sparring sessions. “That’s enough for today.”
Starr swore softly before diving back under the water, unaware of what had happened.
Shin meanwhile collected the weapons and his thoughts. He’d never experienced anything like that. Ever. As he scooped up the weapons, he noticed blood dripping from a wound on his shoulder. The same shoulder she’d managed to hit him when she’d flung the dagger. The weapon shouldn’t have been able to cut through the leather though.
Picking up the last weapon, the one she’d thrown, he noticed several small slivers of ice clinging to the weapon. He frowned to himself in thought, remembering her playing with the water, creating snowflakes and then later using ice to cover herself.
Was she enhancing her weapons with spellwork? And if she was, was it something she was doing consciously?
