"Oh. Joy. Its you."
Jinx didn't even take the time or effort it would require to look up from what he was doing to see the rat giving him a glare. It wasn't even slightly worth it. If pretty-boy had said something smart he might take the time out to put his cute little ass back in its place. But Jak was just standing there with his arms crossed over his chest and a displeased scowl on his face.
"How do you get us into these things?" the rat inquired, presumably to Jak. "You've got to learn to say no, big guy."
Then something hit the sandy dirt outside the Haven City wall. Thumping footsteps made their way over to him and then he was face to nose with the rodent. He stopped what he was doing, shifted the cigar in his mouth and blew smoke right in its face. Half hoped that it choked to death. It just waved its hand in front of its face.
"Just what," it demanded, looking down at his work, "Are you doing to this...this...” He waved his hands at the vehicle like he had nothing but distaste for it. "Thing?"
Jinx grabbed the rat by the furry chest, plucked him off the ground and shoved his face at the vehicle so he was nose to nose with his beautiful creation. "She is going to be keeping your furry ass alive. Be nice." And then he tossed the rat over his shoulder, back toward pretty boy who was two steps from pulling out a blaster and training it on him.
"Well, then," said the rat who couldn't take a hint, creeping back up to stand near him and put his hands on his hips. He cocked a sarcastic sneer at him. "Does she have a name?"
"The Rabid Coyote." His baby. The vehicle he built from the tires to the bomb launcher. He'd rolled it into Haven as four-wheels held together by a rusty axle with a tent pitched over the overworked engine. He'd slept in that wheeled shit until he met Krew. Once he met Krew his baby had gotten a few essential upgrades.
He gave the vehicle a snide grin and wiped the smudge for the idiot's nose off the shine. Then he turned; saw the rat sitting on its ass on the ground, picking dirt out from between its toes with distaste. Jak was just standing there, with a sort of 'so-bored-I'm-going-to-go-dark-on-your-ass-for-entertainment' look on his face. "Get your rat," Jinx said.
"Excuse me?" it said from the ground.
"Fine," he said, hopped into the car, felt his baby all but purr as he curled his fingers around the ignition. "Stay here." His foot pressed down, his fingers wrapped around the wheel. The scenery whipped by, he turned away from the city, grinned into the wind.
There was a yell behind him, something like a screeching old lady and then Jak landed in the passenger seat with the rat clutching his hair. Its eyes were wide and it was shaking. Jak just leaned forward, tucked the jet board back into the sack on his back and leaned back into the seat. Said nothing to him about almost leaving him.
Jinx grinned.

Daxter curled up on his thigh after the first hour, tucked his head almost under his tail and went to sleep. It wasn't the first time his best friend had used sleep as a way out of being embarrassed. Not that Daxter had ever--in his entire life--admitted he had anything to be embarrassed about. Jak had the feeling that this mission was going to test the limit of his patience.
They stopped. It was instantaneously. They were whipping through the ever-thinning line of foliage and then--nothing. Dead stop. Jinx looked over at him, tossed what remained of his cigar out of the vehicle, rolled his head back, and cracked his neck.
Jak raised an eyebrow.
Jinx reached down next to his seat and it flipped back, almost flat, another button was pressed and a compartment in the back opened up, there was the vibration of a motor working, then they were encased in some sort of tent.
Apparently they'd reached the part of the day that was naptime. He found the flap of the tent and pulled it back, Jinx cracked one eye at him. Jak ignored it and slipped out of the Rabid Coyote. Daxter hit the sand at his feet and looked up at him with a hateful sort of glare.
"What--” But his question was stopped when he looked around and found nothing that he was familiar with. "Where are we?"
He didn't know. He didn't answer. Daxter jumped up, grabbed his arm, scrambled up to his shoulder and stood there with his hand in Jak's hair. He felt the foot tapping against his shoulder and looked over the bleached horizon.
Everything was sand. Behind him was the last dying scrub of the swampy forest around Haven. The Rabid Coyote sat in the last of those shadows, everything from the front bumper forward was blonde sand, and the air was shimmering with the intensity of the heat. He swept his hair back, straightened the goggles on his head and moved forward. The blaster rubbed against his leg as he walked, and Daxter shifted with his movements.
"Just where are we going, big guy?"
They weren't going anywhere, just walking, looking around--trying to get a feel for this new terrain. It wasn't a place that he could remember from before, not even Daxter had been brilliant enough to drag him this far away from Sandover. Back then there had been lurker villages this far out in this direction.
He turned toward the north, thought of things how they used to be. Thought of the lava tube and the spider cavern, the snowy mountain, the citadel. All of those things were gone now. What remained was Haven and this--the outlands.
"What's that?"
Jak turned where Daxter pointed, followed his line of sight across the bleached sand to where something was reflecting the light back at them. He slipped the goggles down over his eyes; saw everything through the red haze of the enhanced vision. He couldn't see the shape in any greater definition, it still looked large and unlike anything that he could have identified.
"Hey--Jak--why'd we leave the vehicle? Didn't someone say there were...uh--metalheads" Daxter squeaked that word "Out here?"
"Sig," he agreed.
"Where's the Rapid Otter?" Daxter turned on his shoulder, his fingers were tightening in his hair and Jak could feel the anxious twitch of his tail. He didn't look away from what was approaching. It still hadn't gotten close enough that he could see it definitely, but it was growing larger. He curled his fingers around the blaster that was hanging at his side. It was on the blue modification. Rapid fire, and from the size of the approaching monster, he was going to need it.
"I can't find the Randy Goat!"
Jak looked at Daxter long enough to get that sick sort of 'hey, I'm kind of a coward sometimes' grin before looking back and in the span of those short seconds they had been overtaken by the monstrosity. I lifted its huge mouth opened, ringed with huge flat teeth and roared.
"JAK!!"
He jumped on the jet board and pulled the gun; Daxter hopped to the board, frantically maintaining their balance as they raced across the sand. He pressed the trigger and loosed a volley of bullets. Sand was flying into his face, into the jet board's motor. The creature was turning toward them now, howling with rage. It smacked its heavy teeth together.
The jet board dug into the sand, puffed uselessly and he landed on his ass, clutching the blaster. A huge freckled foot was above them, shadowing them from the endless sun. There was another roar and he was being lifted up off the ground. Daxter was hanging onto his ankle with all his ottsel might. Jak jerked his head back, grabbed at what had him by the back of the shirt and found himself clinging to Jinx' arm. He was hauled across Jinx' lap, lying with his face against the gearshift. He could feel the flex of the leg against his stomach, the weight of the hand on his ass holding him in place.
Jinx jerked the vehicle, it spun so they were facing the beast and he craned his head so he could see Jinx' grin before he pressed something on the steering wheel that made the vehicle shudder.
Something whistled.
And then right in time with the slap on his ass, there was an explosion. It blew across the sand, and the tent that was still covering the vehicle was showered with gray flesh and blood. Jinx smacked his ass again, caught the look on his face and gave him a naughty grin.
"This is a good place for you, pretty boy."

Jinx: *pervy grin*
Jak: Oh. My offended innocence.
Daxter: Innocence?
Jak: Just work with me here.
Daxter: You called me a coward.
Jak: No I didn't! *she* did!
Card: *whistling innocently*
