The next
morning, Soren is tired but still happy to wake up in Ike's arms. He
would gladly be a little tired during the day to feel this content.
As he lies there waiting for Ike to wake, he remembers the night
before and feels a warm glow of happiness. But... what if Ike
regrets it? Soren chews his lower lip in worry. Both of them had
been alone a long time and under a lot of stress; what if that was
really all last night was for Ike, just loneliness?
Even if that isn't true, there are
bound to be consequences. What if those change his mind, make him
regret it? Soren knows there is no point in worrying and he should
stop, but he isn't sure he can. He vows to try anyway, and closes
his eyes and tries to feel the way he had upon first waking. Ike
will have to wake soon anyway.
To his surprise, he has nearly fallen
asleep again, his head on his lover's chest, by the time he feels Ike
begin to stir. Somehow it just feels right and comfortable and safe
to be there, in a way he has never before felt. He can't explain it
and right now he doesn't even try, just cuddles closer. Ike's arms
tighten around him and he wishes they could spend the day like this.
“Mmmm,” Ike murmurs
sleepily. “I'm glad you're still here.” He falls silent
and just lies there smiling and stroking Soren's hair. “I wish
we could both just stay here.”
Feeling his heart soar with relief and
happiness, Soren smiles, a truly happy smile that Ike has never seen
before. “I had just been thinking that.”
Ike sighs. “But I guess we
can't. Still... I want to at least kiss you before we have to get
out of bed.” He pulled Soren up for a long, lingering kiss
before actually starting to get dressed.
Soren can't help but laugh at him as
he watches Ike fumble around sleepily. “You really aren't a
morning person, are you?”
Ike glares. “No, I'm not. And
if you're going to laugh, you could always come over here and help
out.” He stares at the mess he had made of his shirt and sighs
before rummaging to find one that is somewhat cleaner.
“I'd be more likely to help you
out of your clothes than into them.”
Ike stops dead and turns to look at
Soren, who is already dressed and giving him a look that he found way
too sexy for this early in the morning “Ok, now you really
have to come over here.” And when he did, Ike grabbed him and
was soon well on the way to kissing him senseless, Soren moaning
softly into his mouth. He was nearly ready to take his clothes right
back off when the noises of the camp outside made him get control of
himself. He stopped, released Soren and turned away, panting,
studiously ignoring the discomfort in his pants. It didn't help that
he could tell that Soren was having the same difficulty. When he
thought he could speak and sound somewhat normal, he said, “Right,
sorry, getting ready. Really now.”
Soren's laugh is shaky, but real. “I
should probably go, anyway. Things to do before we go and all that.”
“Wait just a moment.”
Soren turns to look at him
questioningly, finds himself staring at Ike's obvious erection and
swallows hard before tearing his gaze away with an effort and looking
up.
Ike gazes deeply into Soren's red
eyes. “Promise you'll come back tonight. Even if we're too
tired...” (not likely! his body shrieks at him), “I don't
want to sleep alone after last night.”
Soren's eyes soften and he smiles.
“Don't worry. And you are always welcome to come find me. I
promise; you'll never have to sleep alone if you don't want to.”
It wasn't an easy day for either of
them. They may have felt like they were the only two people in the
world last night, but of course, that wasn't so, and tents aren't
particularly good at blocking sound. So people nearby had heard
(Soren was horribly embarrassed when he realized this and thought
about exactly what they had heard) and some of them gossiped about it
and naturally everyone was interested in who was (and wasn't, for
that matter) in the general's bed.
Soren had always been hyperconscious
of stares and whispers directed at him and conversations that stopped
when he came near, so much of the day was hellish for him. It seemed
to him that the entire army was looking at him with disapproval. He
tried to hold onto the happiness he had felt only this morning,
making himself remember the things Ike had said to him, but it was
hard. What if Ike decides he has made a mistake? Could he be
convinced that Soren wasn't good enough for him? It doesn't help
that he feels that it is true: he really isn't good enough.
“Hey, Soren. Earth to Soren.
Are you okay?” He woke out of his daze with a start to find
Rhys walking beside him and looking concerned. “Hey, don't
look like that. Your friends are happy for you. I'm happy for you.”
He stopped and gave him a hug with an ease that astonished Soren, as
though he really doesn't care who sees or what they think.
Soren was surprised. Sure, he knew
Rhys; after all, they had been in the same mercenary company for a
long time. But they'd never been particularly close and he wouldn't
have expected him to seek him out and offer reassurance. “Are
you – do you really think it will be okay?” he asks
shyly. He had almost asked him if he really considered himself his
friend, but changed it at the last minute to something that didn't
sound quite as pathetic. He hoped.
Rhys fell in step beside him and
smiled. “Of course! People like to talk, especially about who
is bedding whom, but soon it will be old news and no one will care
anymore. And some of us are just glad to see that you're human like
the rest of us.”
Soren gives Rhys a suspicious look at
this. Was he trying to say...? But he honestly seems to be teasing
him, in the way he often sees members of the company tease each
other, and not to mean anything more by it. But just in case, he
will watch him more carefully, to see what he knows. Rhys does seem
to be awfully observant. But then again, maybe an observant person
who seems to want to be his friend is exactly who he needs right now.
So he glances at him and asks, “Do you think that Ike...
might change his mind? I mean, after today and whatever
people are saying to him... about us?”
“Is that what's bothering you?
You should know better than that! When has Ike ever cared what
people think?”
“But things are different now.
He has a title and he's general of this army... now it matters what
people think,” Soren protested.
“Not to Ike. I promise. He
didn't want either of those things, not really. And if they were
taken away from him, he'd probably be happier,” Rhys said
firmly.
He actually sounded certain enough
that Soren felt a bit better, more certain that Ike wouldn't suddenly
have a change of heart. So he went ahead and asked his next
question. “And none of you are upset at me because, well, I'm
sure I am not who Commander Greil would have wanted for his son?”
There is a pause while they walk in
silence and Rhys thinks it over. “I don't think he would have
expected this,” he said at last. “But I also think he
would want his son to be happy and he is, you know. Everyone who has
laid eyes on him this morning knows Ike is happy.”
Soren blushed and stared at his feet,
but he was pleased. “I'm... glad he's happy,” he says
softly.
“Of course he is. You're the
best thing to happen to him in a long time.”
Rhys watched the small, slender man
next to him in silence for awhile. Soren felt him watching, but he
didn't know why, so he just waited. Finally, Rhys spoke again. “You
have always seemed like a loner, someone who didn't want or need
other people. And I didn't want to intrude where I wasn't wanted.
But now I think maybe I was wrong and you need friends. So I want
you to know that I am your friend and if you want to talk or just
someone to spend time with, you are always welcome to come find me.”
Soren laughs bitterly at this. “You
mean all I had to do to have friends was have sex? That changes your
opinion of me? You want to be my friend because I slept with Ike?”
He shakes his head in disbelief.
But Rhys continues to look at him
steadily, without hesitation. “No, it's not because you slept
with him. I want to be your friend because you love him, and the man
that can do that is not the man I thought you were.”
Author's Note: Ok, more angst
and less sex in this chapter, but it happens. :) Next chapter, POV
change and more talking and eventually more sex!
