Hero: Dark!Exile
The Basilisk war droid shook and rattled as it made its way back into orbit. The
Mandalorians had designed them to be nose-heavy, better to come screaming down
through the atmosphere of some unsuspecting planet, and the unbalanced weight
meant that the damn thing kept trying to flip over backwards on me. The ride
might have been smoother if I’d let Mandalore fly, but it had been a long time since
I’d trusted anyone enough to pilot for me.
The situation on Onderon had been dealt with. Master Kavar and the Queen were
dead, and Vaklu was mopping up the last of the Royalist fighters. Soon, Vaklu
would be King, and I would have a powerful galactic leader at my beck and call.
He would be useful when it came time to rebuild the Jedi Order in my image.
I felt a feral grin slip on to my face. And if the new King of Onderon ever decided
to go back on his word to me... well, I doubted it would take much convincing to
get the Mandalorians to invade again. Mandalore had added two full clans to his
army while he’d been traveling with me, and they were all itching for a fight.
They too would serve a purpose within my new Republic.
The tug on the controls changed as we pulled free of Onderon’s gravity and began
to fall towards Dxun. I throttled back the main engines and changed the tilt of the
dropship, plotting a roundabout course back to the Mandalorian camp, just in case
Vaklu tried to get cute and track us to the hidden base. Mandalore grunted his
approval from the seat next to me, but his opinion was as worthless as he was. The
only person I’d met in the last ten years who’s thoughts I was even mildly
interested in was Kreia. I could feel her in the seat behind me, sightless eyes
boring into the back of my head, giving away nothing of her own intentions. She
had helped me regain the Force, had taught me techniques beyond anything the
Jedi, or even the Sith, had ever dreamed of... but I still didn’t know why. She was
plotting behind my back, of that I was sure. But what was the point of training me,
if she only intended to betray me?
There were no homing beacons or landmarks to indicate where the Mandalorian
camp was, so I simply allowed the Force to guide my hand. Soon, the endless
jungle parted just enough to reveal an ancient stone compound, with a few more
modern buildings scattered within it. I took us in for a landing.
Just outside the hanger were two small groups of people, who clearly wanted
nothing to do with each other. Mandalore gave me a short, respectful nod and
went off to speak with his clan chiefs, who stood at least thirty feet away from my
apprentices. I looked around for Kreia, but she had already disappeared back to the
Ebon Hawk. She was probably even less fond of my apprentices than the
Mandalorians were.
Atton was slouched against a plasteel cylinder, wrapped from head to toe in
midnight black robes. The only visible part of him was his eyes, which moved
constantly, taking in everything. The former assassin had taken to his new role as
my personal kath hound admirably. He hardly spoke anymore, which frankly was
an vast improvement, and was utterly and unquestionably loyal. The hilt of his
lightsaber glittered at his waist, and he caressed it lovingly with one gloved thumb.
All it would take was one word from me, and he would kill anything that moved.
Visas still wore the same crimson and black hooded robes that she’d worn when
her former Master had sent her to kill me. But she was my creature now, not his.
The only thing more important to her than my safety and happiness was her
burning desire to gain revenge on the half-man who had stripped her world of life.
“My life for yours, Master.” she murmured in greeting, then bowed.
I counted heads, and came up one short. “Where’s Mira?” I asked.
There was a derisive snort from the third apprentice present. “I told you that you
should not have allowed her to lead the raid on the Sith temple.” the Handmaiden
said with acid in her voice. She had traded in her virgin white Echani robe in
favor of a shiny black synthleather bodysuit, which covered her all the way up to
her neck, but hugged her firm curves so closely that she might as well have not
been wearing anything at all. Of all of them, she had taken to the dark side of the
Force with the most fervor. Her skin was now almost as pale as her hair, and her
lips had turned such a dark red that they were almost black. The contrast was
striking and beautiful.
I cocked an eyebrow at her. “Is she dead?” I asked, moderately curious.
The Handmaiden’s mouth twitched. “Unfortunately, no. Right now, she’s sulking
in Mandalore’s quarters.” Her dark eyes flashed with anger and impatience. “You
should kill her and be done with it. She’s not strong enough to be one of us, and
sh...”
Echani-trained or not, the Handmaiden never saw my hand move. The back of my
fist thudded into her jaw, sending her sprawling to the ground. She slowly pushed
herself up onto her elbows and touched her lip, fingers coming away bloody. She
looked back up at me, eyes blazing, and for a split second I thought she might try to
attack me. Abruptly, she became aware of Atton and Visas standing over her,
watching, hands on their lightsabers.
“I am the Master here, little serving girl... never forget that.” I told her in a soft,
deadly tone. “The next time you question one of my decisions will be the last time,
one way or another.”
A small, defiant smile spread across her lips, and a soft pink tongue slipped out of
her mouth to sensuously lick off the blood there. She stood up gingerly and
sketched a slight bow. “Yes, Master.” she said, a hint of amusement in her tone.
“Please forgive my impudence.”
I briefly considered killing her. The Handmaiden had quickly become a true Sith,
and I could tell that she was already entertaining thoughts of murdering me and
taking my place. She would fail, of course. She was no match for me, either
physically or in the Force, but there was always the slight danger that she might get
lucky.
Then again, it might be best to allow her to try, then slap her down so hard that she
would never even think of overstepping her station again. After all, she did have a
great deal of potential, and it would be a waste to kill her without even trying to tap
it fully. Also, molding her into a proper servant would probably require me to
break her mind completely, and that would provide its own... amusement.
The smug look on the Handmaiden’s face faltered slightly at my leering grin.
“Return to the Ebon Hawk and prepare for departure.” I told them. “Mira and I
will be along shortly.” Atton and Visas waited for the Handmaiden to move first,
then followed behind her like a pair of guards.
Mandalore’s living quarters were located in a small room connected to the main
command and control center. The junior officer stationed there held up a hand to
stop me as I entered, but a quick burst of the Force sent him hurtling across the
room and into the far wall with a sickening crunch. I didn’t have the time or
patience to deal with underlings, and Mandalore would have little sympathy for
any of his men who got in my way. I mounted the short staircase and stood before
the heavy steel door. I could sense the flow of energy from the powerful magnetic
locks holding it closed, but a few very small threads of the Force was all it took to
cause it to slide open with a sharp hiss.
The interior of the room was almost completely dark, the only light coming from
the video displays set into the walls. I stepped inside and waved my hand at the
door, closing it. The dim light showed an unsurprisingly spartan dwelling, with a
small pallet near the far wall as the only indication that someone actually lived
there.
Mira sat in the shadows, in the corner farthest from the door, her knees pulled up
to her chest. Two small, cylindrical objects glittered near her feet. One was the
lightsaber I had taught her to construct. The other was her prize from the temple,
the lightsaber of Freedon Nadd.
“Cowering in the dark like a child is no way to celebrate your victory,” I said to her
harshly, flicking my wrist at the panel on the wall and raising the lights.
She flinched at the sudden brightness and shielded her eyes, but said nothing. I
walked over and leaned against the wall opposite from her, folding my arms in
disapproval. “What do you hope to gain by denying what you truly are?” I
demanded. She still didn’t speak. “Look at me, you worthless schutta!” I growled.
Her head snapped up angrily. When I had last seen her a few hours before, her
eyes had been a deep, vivid green. Now they were a sickly amber, with blood-red
circles surrounding the irises. Her short hair still fell into her eyes, but it had
darkened from burnt orange to a deep crimson, and a faint tracery of dark veins had
replaced the dusting of freckles on her cheeks and forehead.
“What’s happening to me?” she snarled.
I tilted my head at her. “A few minor cosmetic changes are to be expected, and are
a small price to pay, when one touches the infinite power of the Dark Side.”
“I’m not talking about this.” she said, touching her face. “I’m talking about inside.
I’m... different now, I can feel it. That place... that... temple, it changed me
somehow.”
“In what way?” I asked, not letting the expectant smile touch my lips.
Her eyes became unfocused, like she was looking inside of herself. “I’m no
murderer. I’ve killed people when I had to, but only when there was no other
choice, and I never enjoyed it.” She shivered slightly. “But those guards at the
temple... there were so many of them, and it was so easy. I just butchered them
where they stood, and when it was over I went looking for more. After we opened
the door to the temple vault, there was no reason to go down the other hall, but I
couldn’t help myself. I could feel them there, I could hear the blood pumping
through their veins, and all I wanted to do was make it stop, to splash it across the
walls and feel it dripping down my skin. I wanted to bathe in their blood.” She
stopped, seeming to want those last few words back.
“Freedon Nadd was one of the most powerful and vicious Sith Lords to ever walk
the face of the galaxy.” I told her. “In Iziz, just the mention of his name is enough
to make grown men fall down weeping. It’s not surprising that his mausoleum
would still hold a... fragment of what he was, certainly enough to affect anyone
closely attuned to the Force, particularly if that person was only beginning to
understand their power.”
Mira’s jaw went slack and she looked at me like she couldn’t believe what I was
saying. “You knew?” she whispered incredulously, pushing herself up the wall
until she was back on her feet. “You knew what would happen and you still sent
me there?”
I let her wait for my answer. A few seconds ticked by, and I could sense her anger
rising. I cut her off just before she was about to explode.
“When you asked me to train you, you said that you wanted to be strong, that you
didn’t want to be afraid anymore.” I said to her. “But events are moving faster than
I expected, so I was forced to take... drastic steps to further your education.”
“Drastic, my ass!” she growled. “You sent me in there like a sacrificial lamb.”
“Untrue,” I said with false hurt, enjoying her anger. “It was a test. The fact that
you survived, and indeed flourished, within the temple proves that you are ready to
take the next step in your training.”
“Is that what you call flourishing? Slaughtering men for no reason?” she said
angrily.
“Of course,” I snapped. “They were enemies, our enemies, and as such deserve to
die.” I shook my head at her and sighed. “Has life taught you nothing? Sparing
those who would do you harm is worse than weakness, it’s foolish. How much
simpler would your life have been if you had simply allowed Hanharr to perish,
rather than saving him, and putting him in your debt?”
“That was different!” she said defensively.
“Was it?” I asked. “Why?” She didn’t answer, so I answered for her. “Was it
because you enjoyed killing those men?” I sauntered over to her and leaned down
to whisper seductively into her ear. “How much more enjoyable will it be to cut
down Hanharr like the mindless beast that he is?”
“Hanharr’s already dead.” she snapped.
I bestowed a chiding smile on her. “Don’t be so sure. You told me yourself how
strong he is. He lives, and he hunts you still. Soon he will find you, and he will
rip the flesh from your bones to feast on it. Your only chance to defeat him is to
submit to me, to fully embrace the Dark Side of the Force.”
Her face twisted in anger. “BASTARD!!!” she screamed, shoving me away from
her and summoning her lightsabers into her hands. Twin golden blades ignited as
she launched herself at me. I spun and planted my foot against the wall behind me,
vaulting myself over her head and landing behind her just as her lightsabers
hummed through the space I had recently occupied. I thrust my open palm at her
back and Force pushed her face first into the wall. She bounced hard off the wall,
stunned, and I was there to grab her wrists and twist them viciously behind her
back, forcing her to drop her weapons.
“YOU SET ME UP!!!” she screamed, trying to break my iron grip on her. “YOU
KNEW THAT HANHARR WAS ALIVE, AND YOU SET ME UP SO THAT I
WOULD HAVE TO FOLLOW YOU!!!”
“I did what I had to do to make you understand your true path.” I calmly replied.
She continued to struggle for several more moments, but the fight soon drained out
of her. Her shoulders went slack and she leaned her forehead against the steel wall
in front of her in defeat. Still standing behind her, I slowly took her wrists and
pressed them against the wall, before whispering into her ear again. “Now, are you
going to allow that pathetic animal to win, or are you going to take the power that
is rightfully yours and show him, once and for all, who is the hunter and who is the
prey?”
Several seconds ticked by while she considered her options, which I knew were
nonexistent. The only way that she would survive Hanharr’s wrath would be at my
side. “What do I have to do?” she said quietly, beaten.
“Say the words. Swear yourself to me... mind, body, and soul, and all the power
that I possess will become yours. I can show you things that you never imagined,
Mira, teach you secrets that will allow you to hold the galaxy in the palm of your
hand. By my side you can even learn to transcend death. Would you like that? To
be able to reach across the infinite void and speak with the family you lost so many
years ago?” I heard her take in a sharp breath at that, and smiled, knowing the
answer before she said it.
“I swear...” She took a deep breath and continued, her voice growing stronger with
each word. “I swear that everything I have, everything I am, and everything I will
ever be, now belongs to you... Master.”
I let go of her wrists and slid my hands slowly down her arms and across her flanks
until the tips of my fingers were touching the bare skin on either side of her
exposed midriff.
“Everything?” I asked, letting the question hang in the air.
Still with her hands pressed against the wall, she pushed her hips back until her
soft, leather covered rear pressed firmly against my crotch.
“Everything.” she breathed.

And after that? The galaxy was within my grasp. All I had to do was reach out
and take it.

revisit this particular storyline again in the future, if enough people are interested
in finding out exactly what it is that the Exile has planned for the Handmaiden.
