I remember now, clearly... that day of the moon festival that we met. Music and chatter filled the halls and gardens. My mother was standing next to one of the food tables looking out the window. Her fan closed and gently resting on the swell of her breast, as if forgotton and her other arm crossed, hand in the crook of her elbow. I ran towards her and slammed into her legs.
"Mama, mama!" A look of suprise graced her features as she gave me a hug. "Oh, hello my little honeybun." She put a hand on my shoulder and bent down at the waist to level her eyes with mine. "What have you been up to?" "I was playing with cousin Ying, we ran all around the gardens and chased a pretty butterfly, but it got away." I was eager to recount my adventures to my mother. She smiled and giggled, a sound a like pretty bells. "Well I hope you don't get into too much trouble." My mother stood up straight and reached onto the table and handed me a mooncake. "Here you go." I stared at the cake for a minute, my eyes wide and my mouth agape before I took it into my hands. The mooncake was just the size of my mother's palm but I had to hold it with both hands. "Wow! A whole mooncake? All to myself!" She laughed again. "Yes, now, what do you say?" "Thankyou mama!" I exclaimed, happy to show that I remembered my manners. "Well you're very welcome." She gave me a quick peck on the cheek. "Remember to stay out of trouble? Okay?" "Okay!" I ran off, eager to show my cousins that I had a whole cake before I ate it. So lost in my joy, I rushed too much and tripped over my own two feet. I stared in horror as my mooncake flew out of my hands and onto the floor where it bounced once before rolling under someone's foot. I landed flat on my face and I felt my face heat up as I started to cry. I sat up, fists in my eyes and my legs outstretched in front of me and no one really bothered to notice the little girl, barely knee high, sitting on the floor and wailing her little heart out and not loud enough to be heard over the music. Then someone came and knelt down next to me. "Are you alright?" I looked up and sniffed. He looked about my mother's age. "I dropped my mooncake and it got smooshed." He looked over to where I pointed. "Ah, I see." Turning his head back towards me, he gave me a smile. "That's too bad, here, you can have mine." He held his hand out and I gingerly took the mooncake from his hand, afraid he would take it away or that it wasn't real.
"Really?! Thankyou, thankyou!"
"Alright then... be a bit more careful from now on." He lifted me up by my shoulders and my toes dangled a few inches off the ground before he gently set me down onto my feet.
"Ming Hua!" I heard the sound of my mother's voice cut through the noise. "Ming Hua- oh, excuse me... Ming Hua!" My mother pushed through the crowd over to us and kelt. "Are you ok sweetie?" She held my face in her hands. "Lu Xun, is she ok?"
I nodded. "Yeah, I'm ok mommy."
"Don't worry, she just took a bit of a tumble. She'll be fine." My mother looked up at the man that helped me.
"He's right mommy, I'll be ok."
She nodded a few times. "Right... right... ok, now... um... you run off now and be more careful ok?"
"I know that mommy, you both said so already. I'll be ok now."
"Ming Hua? Hello-o... don't fall asleep!"
"Hm?" I looked over at my aunt. We were in the hot springs under the palace.
"How are you feeling?"
"Mmmm.... the water feels good."
She grinned. "I knew it would."
"Grown men are bigger than little boys." I mumbled.
My aunt burst out laughing. "Don't tell me you were expecting those tiny things you saw while helping me with my sons?"
I sank deeper into the water, trying to hide my blush. "...I don't know... I guess it's kind of like how girls' breasts are propotionally much bigger when they are grown than when they are little."
She giggled, "I guess you could say that!"
Silence echoed the walls. "... When will I be able to walk properly again?"
My book sat open in my lap and my hair spilled over one shoulder. The candle flickered as the door opened and my husband walked in. He lay a gentle hand upon my shoulder then leaned over to see what I had been so engrossed in reading.
"Poetry... you enjoy reading?"
I nodded and tilted my head up to him. "Yes, very much so."
"Another thing I have have learned of you. But light more candles next time... you will strain your eyes like that."
I closed my book and, still feeling akward, I hid behind a polite and formal response. "Thankyou for your concern..." I listened to him change, still too embaressed to look up. My gaze was locked onto the bookcover and my fingers lightly stroked it.
His arms encircled me from behind and he leaned in to lightly press his lips just in front of my ear. "Let's go to bed."
Another nod, "Yes, it's getting late." I blew out my candle and let him lead me to the bed. I crawled in and stretched out and he did the same after me. I was fully expecting him to take me again but he didn't make any move to touch me save to drape an arm around my waist.
Even though the hour was getting late, I don't believe either of us would have been able to fall asleep easy at that time. He moved his hand to my upper arm in a comforting gesture. It's the little things like this... the small touches here and there that seem to be breaking the ice between us.
"You look lovely in the moonlight... How are you feeling?"
I ducked my head to hide my blush. "I still ache but I really do seem to be feeling much better than this morning." As a lady I must hide these pains lest I offend... that is what my ettiquette teacher had said.
He slowly pulled me flush against him and slipped a hand under my sleeping robes to gingerly touch me. I let out a small, pained squeal and tried to muffle it in his chest. A whisper in my ear, "I do believe that you are in more pain than you let on... are you bruised?"
"No! ... well sort of... but I bruise easy and I heal fast!", babbling now, I clutched at his clothes tighter. "P- please don't... please don't ... not tonight- w- we can tomorrow and the day after b- but tonight I-"
He cut me off. "Shhh, shhh... if you don't want to then we will not."
I stayed still and silent for a long pause. My grip on his clothes loosened. "Thankyou..." He stroked and nuzzled my hair.
"Sleep well..."
