Chapter 1: Meeting
The time Axel had spent in the Organization afterwards had been some of the slowest days of his life. He found the place to be terribly bland and boring. The absence of his heart allowed nothing to be even the least bit exciting or interesting. He worked because he was told to. The only reason he did anything was to get his heart back. Otherwise, he'd just be a blob on a couch. At least that he could be thankful for.
There was that one thing he hated about this place, though. Actually, if he had one thing he did like it definitely wasn't here. But more than anything else, he just could not stand the other members. Xemnas himself was enough to make Axel gag in disgust in the way he ordered them all around. But then there were the scientists. The only one he could really deal with was Vexen because the guy secluded himself to his lab. Saix was similar to him in the respect that he wasn't one of the original scientists, but the guy was so stoic. And when he wasn't stoic, well, Saix was like a werewolf. One minute he'd be perfectly blank practicing with throwing around that huge claymore of his and if you said the wrong thing, suddenly it'd be pointed at you and his eyes would be glowing and he'd be snarling.
Axel had seen that face too many times, even in just his first few days of being in the Organization. He definitely did not get along with Saix.
Zexion one would think would be easy to be around, but the guy annoyed Axel if they talked any longer than two minutes. A sort of holier-than-thou attitude always seemed to be directed at him from Zexion. It was the sort of attitude that made Axel want to burn the guy where he stood.
He didn't want to even get started on Xaldin, Xigbar, and Lexaeus.
That was why when Demyx joined the Organization not even a month after he did, Axel breathed a sigh of relief. The guy had been the only one he could actually stay in a room with and not want to burn things. Axel, though, did find Demyx to be... different; strange, even. It was the way he responded to things, Axel noticed. It was as if the man still held on to some of his emotions, which greatly confused him. He was surprised Vexen didn't attack the Nobody to research him.
The reason why he was able to stand Demyx was probably due to the music he brought. Axel had forgotten all about music after becoming a Nobody. He didn't even notice its absence until he heard that melody being played from one of the balconies of the castle. At first, the sound had confused him, but when he saw Demyx sitting there with his sitar, looking so... content with what he was doing, he remembered. He remembered a time when Lea was dancing with that guy and rested her head on his shoulder. They had been dancing almost all night and she had become so tired.
Axel tried to grasp onto what it felt like to be held close by someone like that, but there was nothing. Only a blank came to mind. Only blankness.
He stared into the dark sky and towards their created Kingdom Hearts which still remained the same since he had joined - completely empty. Axel listened possibly for hours before he finally strode away. The last song that was played had been stuck in his head for the rest of the day, though, and that pissed him off.
And then there were Demyx's mood swings. They were worse than Saix's temper tantrums as it could be any emotion at any given time. It was different than a person who still had their heart, though. What emotions he may have had were next to uncontrollable. There was a time Axel had found Demyx crying - Nobodies never cried - and no matter what Axel said to him, he didn't stop. Of course, Axel wasn't sure what you were supposed to say to comfort someone, and horribly failed in his attempt.
After enough of the crying, Axel rolled his eyes and walked away. Demyx could deal with himself on his own. Either that or go visit Xemnas the Psychiatrist.
All in all, the realization of what completing Kingdom Hearts meant was understood by Axel. Getting his heart back didn't mean he would return to his previous life - and he really didn't think he wanted to - but be able to once again live as a full human being. He would be able to have a new life living as Axel. And he'd be able to get away from this Organization with the most annoying people ever to exist.
After Demyx, three more failures would appear. Luxord, the gambler and quite the drinker, had a snarky attitude and British accent, both good reasons for Axel to ignore the guy. Then there was the worst member yet, Marluxia. Marluxia had a flamboyant attitude and pink hair. That alone made Axel shiver. On top of it all, Marluxia's element was flowers and the guy was so amazingly femmy (not that Axel could really speak, with his figure being rather girly) that Axel would never be able to take him seriously. Not even when he let Axel into his secret plan to overthrow the Organization. An idea that did not interest Axel in the very least, but he went along with anyway if not for anything else than the mystery such a plan held. In the end, he joined Marluxia to give him something to do.
Axel had forgotten all about females by the time Larxene had joined. When he first saw her, it took him a few minutes of mental debate to figure out what was different about her exactly. Oh yeah, boobs. Before Axel could even think about talking to her, she had already threatened to stab him and had thrown a few of her kunai at him. Axel thought it wise to try and keep his distance from her. Marluxia hadn't allowed that secret promise to be kept for long. Apparently, Marluxia and Larxene had already known each other before joining and were both involved in the overthrowing plan. Keeping on Larxene's good side, or at least not pissing her off, was a great idea.
When Xemnas announced there would be one last member joining the Organization, Axel was indifferent to it. The keyblade wielder, a man by the name of Sora, had finally appeared and the hearts were already gathering. The Organization had yet to reveal themselves, however. Xehanort's heartless was acting on his own in a very peculiar manner and giving the keyblade master a tough time. Perhaps Xemnas was interested in the capabilities of this particular heartless.
Xemnas continued concerning the new member, "It's important that Number XIII not know of his Somebody. While everyone here will know, no one is to make mention of him."
Axel was intrigued by these orders. Not know of his Somebody? But all Nobodies retained their memories. Why would this new member be any different? Who exactly was their Somebody? Many questions ran through his head, but he asked none. He was assured it would all be answered in due time.
"We cannot afford to not have him on our side." It was the only confirmation the others needed to know how important this member would be.
Axel was less than amused. Whoever it was, it was a given that they'd just be another annoying thing to deal with.
He never once regretted being wrong.
The blond man Xemnas had brought in instantly surprised all the other members. The expression on his face was devoid of absolutely any emotion. He was led into the meeting room by Xemnas and stared forward, eyes burning holes to the base of Xaldin's chair that was in front of him. It wasn't that, though, that everyone was interested in, but by the fact he was holding two keyblades.
Axel's thoughts went straight to Sora. Knowing he was the current keyblade master, it was too odd that there'd be another one, and even moreso... a Nobody keyblade wielder? That alone made no sense.
"This is Number XIII, the Key of Destiny, Roxas. Treat him kindly."
Oh, that made sense. So this new member was the Nobody of the keyblade wielder, which would cause him to also be a keyblade wielder. The question was what happened to Sora"s heartless.
Xemnas didn't allow Axel much time to think as he continued on, "VIII, take XIII to his room."
Axel hopped from his seat and approached the boy. "It's a pretty big place. Don't want you to get lost."
Roxas barely registered the presence of the other. He looked at him briefly before mumbling a "yeah" and turned to walk out before Axel. Xemnas whispered into Axel's ear, "Leave him there and come back immediately."
Axel didn't flinch, instead he gave his acknowledgment simply by moving out of the room and leading the boy down the hall. They walked past numbered doors in a silence until Axel, unable to resist, spoke, "What do you know of your Somebody, anyway?" They approached the door marked XIII; Xemnas must have set it up earlier. "This is it," Axel pointed out before Roxas could answer.
Roxas, having discarded his keyblades earlier, opened the door and stepped in before answering, "Nothing. Xemnas told me his name was Sora, but nothing else was important." His eyes gazed around the completely white room. The Organization really did have horrible taste. Even the most unsavvy in interior design couldn't deny this.
Axel was easy to recognize the rather disappointed look on Roxas' face even after knowing the shorter one only a few minutes. "Decorate how you see fit. I gotta run."
Roxas glanced behind him, but Axel hadn't noticed. He had already left and made his way back to the meeting room. Warping to get into his chair, he noticed all the members were still there. It didn't look any different from how he left and he imagined that nothing had occurred during his absence.
Xemnas was able to begin, "The newcomer is the Nobody of Sora, the keyblade wielder. Sora turned into a heartless, but his heart was still strong. Kairi was able to reawaken his heart and he became human again."
All the members were immediately interested in this turn of events. Never before had someone been able to come out of their heartless form in such a manner. It seemed as though when the mysteries of the heart began to become clearer, there was always a new mystery that would spring up. It was somewhat discouraging, even to those with no hearts, yet similarly provided the hope for finding the truth as more was discovered.
"But," Vexen began, "if Sora was able to become human again, why does he have a Nobody?"
Xemnas thought for a moment before answering, "It seems his Nobody was produced almost immediately after he lost his heart. Furthermore, because he was a heartless for such a short time, his memories failed to be reproduced and thus lacks any and all. I expect it to be kept this way." It was meant as a warning to all the members, and Xemnas knew they wouldn't be satisfied without a reasoning. "If Roxas knew of his other, its a definite he would go searching for him and betray the Organization. We can't have that happen as he is one who can collect hearts for us. And is thus, invaluable to us."
The members were silent as the information was piling into their heads. Roxas' appearance was a huge step forward and everything was gradually, but surely, coming together.
"XI, I assure that Kairi's Nobody is in our possession?"
Marluxia nodded to the Superior with a satisfied smirk, "Of course. She's residing at my Castle Oblivion as we speak."
"Make sure there is always someone looking after her. The next phase of the plan will be happening shortly after Sora defeats Xehanort's heartless. Take whoever you need for assistance."
Marluxia gave his respectful confirmation and the meeting was dismissed. Axel walked out of the room, his thoughts completely focused on the new findings of the heart. No one could help but be confused by the inanimate existence that was the heart. It only furthered frustration within the Organization and led to an unhealthy imbalance.
Marluxia approached Axel as they left the room, "I'm assuming you'll be accompanying me to the Castle?"
Axel knew that whatever it was that Marluxia had in mind exactly that there was no way of it succeeding. The Organization was powerful and Marluxia may have been a strong fighter, but not nearly as strong as those completely dedicated to it. And now with the newly added Roxas; he was truly insane to want to go through with his stupid plan.
"Of course," Axel agreed before he took off to his room, successfully avoiding the others as they went off to do what they wanted. He thought about being lazy for a bit then getting some food and doing some training as he went to open his door. He only stopped as he heard a stuttering and turned to face who it was.
"U-uhm... ...VIII?"
Roxas stood there looking a bit unsure of himself. He obviously wanted something. "You can call me Axel. A-X-E-L. Got it memorized?" He threw out his signature phrase, but Roxas didn"t look particularly impressed or anything. Axel wasn"t really expecting any sort of great reaction from it anyway. "What is it?"
Roxas didn"t avert his eyes as he spoke, a rather steady tone of voice was consistent, "I was wondering where the... ....uhm... ...food... is?"
Axel realized that it wasn't nervousness that was making the kid stutter, but like he didn't know the word. How much of his memories were lost exactly? So much that he didn't know common words? "The kitchen, you mean? I was just going to go there, so I'll show you." Truthfully, Axel was planning on just portalling over there, but Roxas didn't seem to have a grasp on how to work one if he had to ask. Not to mention, portalling to a place where you've never been before is a bit of a bitch. Not that it isn't possible; just annoying to deal with.
Roxas nodded and Axel turned to make his way down the hallway. There would always be time to be lazy later, he supposed.
"What are the other members like?"
Axel didn't stop as he answered the boy, "Annoying. Its probably best to avoid them whenever possible. Xaldin or Larxene, for instance. They both seem to enjoy stabbing things - including people."
Roxas watched the man with some interest. He was curious as to what other people were like as, truthfully, he hadn't met many yet. Upon meeting Xemnas, Roxas didn't think too highly of the man, but not knowing what else to do decided to join him. No memories, no heart; it looked rather bleak otherwise.
When he saw Axel, Roxas' eyes went directly to the massive mane of glaring red hair. The first person Roxas had ever met was Xemnas, but the stark contrast in looks didn't bother him.
But there was something about the atmosphere that seemed to separate everyone from each other, he noticed. Axel seemed... warm.
Axel turned to Roxas, "Maybe you'll get used to them, but I can't stand them."
Roxas stared back and was quiet a moment before answering, "I don't know people well, so maybe." He didn't look excited or anything though. Roxas took a quick glance out a window, viewing the vast blackness of the World That Never Was.
Axel studied him a minute before continuing towards the kitchen, deciding that Roxas was one of those emo kids. Kind of like Zexion, only not annoying. He noticed a calmer, more comfortable aura around this one. It also was as if Roxas were looking up to him, and Axel liked it. It was odd since they had only just met, but Axel could tell that he was different. He didn't understand what it was that told him this; he just knew it.
Upon arriving at the kitchen, Axel immediately scanned through the contents of the refrigerator. The fridge, Axel had concluded, was always overstuffed and you never knew what had gone bad. He sniffed some tuna and deemed it still edible, so he made some sandwiches.
They sat in a neutral silence at the table while they ate, until Roxas first spoke, "I've already been given a mission."
Axel bit into his sandwich, uncaring for manners, "That's how they are; never waste a second. What do you get to do?"
Similarly, Roxas was uncaring for all the crumbs flying across the clean table, "Just killing heartless. Xemnas is letting me control Samurai Nobodies, but it's best if I kill them. Then we'll get their hearts."
"You should call him 'the Superior', by the way."
"Why?"
Axel paused. Truthfully, he wanted to say, "Because he"s an egotistical bitch," but decided that probably wasn't the best idea. "That's the way it is. He is Number I."
"Why is he the leader?"
Roxas was asking some weird questions, Axel thought. The question hadn't been sarcastic or bitter, but seemed purely for some want for the knowledge. Axel could at the very least give him that he decided, "His Somebody, Xehanort, had studied the workings of the heart under Ansem the Wise. But Ansem the Wise saw how dangerous it was and stopped his research. Unfortunately, Xehanort and five other scientists continued it. They created heartless, unknowingly also creating Nobodies. Long story short, Xehanort steals Ansem's name, research gets messed up, and those scientists' Nobodies are now the first six members of this Organization."
Axel looked to Roxas who had stared directly back at him. "Hope that didn"t bore you."
Roxas shook his head. "No. It's interesting. It's weird because they loved their work so much, they sacrificed their hearts for it... but now that they've lost them, they want their hearts back."
Axel couldn't help but laugh, "I don"t think it was so much 'love' as just screwing up though. Don't know why anyone would so easily give away their heart."
The kid certainly was different. To be able to think of something so naive. Axel admitted there was something about his childish nature that he couldn't help but admire. Roxas was so young, even more so in his mind. Axel smiled at that.
The first time an Organization member had made him truly smile.
