"You're Highness, I do not mean to offend, but I object!" Sheik protested.
Link hid a start of suprise, of all the people to object, he hadn't expected Sheik to. Wasn't he Zelda's stand-in? Wasn't Sheik and Zelda the same person??Although now that he thought about it, there were times when the Sheik that came to visit him seemed like a totally different person that usual... What was goin on here??? If Sheik was Zelda, he wouldn't be protesting. As well, if they were the same person, wouldn't she be missed? It's no like you wouldn't notice if the princess suddenly up and dissapeared and if she and Sheik were the same person she certainly would; then the entrie castle, not to mention the entire COUNTRY would be in an uproar looking for her. But then.... Why???? What???Link had the sudden urge to sit down, the confusion was starting to get the better of him and he suddenly felt very tired.Sheik (the one that was currenlty in Sheikah garb), and Zelda were arguing lightly. Link knew, off-handedly, that Zelda would win this one, she was the Princess of Hyrule after all. But the argument kind of rememinded him of the kind a couple of bikering sibilings would have. However, the fact that Sheik didn't want to come on this "expedition", with him, made his chest ache in unexplicable ways, not dissimilar to the way it had ached when Navi had dissapeared...He knew that somewhere in all this he should be offended, it wasn't like Zelda was asking Sheik to babysit him, after all - he could take very good care of himself, thank you very much. But most of him was wondering at the differences that were now coming to light between the princess (whom had pretended to be Sheik) and the young man, whom he was guessing was the real Sheik. For one thing Zelda was very motherly, and acting so at this very moment; giving the Sheikah a very "I know what's good for you" attitude in their little argument. She was pointing out the dangers of their "mission" with a very tired air, like they'd been over this before... Link wondered if they had, and for some reason this amused him. It made the current Sheik look younger and more rebellious than Link was used to seeing him. Indeed, he remembered seeing Sheik, at times looking like he had a very old soul, much like Zelda did. He didn't have the same experiences but he had a feeling that living your teens over twice in one lifetime (whether she remembered or not), had a lot to do with it - he felt old and he'd only had to live his childhood once, mind his case was entirely different, but you get the point. Along with a burden of being a Seer or whatever she was, Link could see that having a heavy toll on the Pricess. Seh acted as though she had a heavy burden on her shoulders, which in some cases she did, but it was pronounced ever so slightly within every word she spoke and every motion she made. All of this reminded him of the times when Sehik would meet him at the temple. He (or maybe she) had moved, sometimes, as if he carried the weith of the world on his shoulders. He would give Link advice and knowingly lead him towards danger (no that Link hadn't gone unwillingly or unprepated), but there was a weight in those shoulders that wasn't always there, and a sad gleam in his (or hers) eyes that now, was reflected in Zelda's eyes as she pointed out the dangers of the areas they would be passing through. Sadness of knowingly sending htem into danger, feelings of guilt for doing so, but giving the orders none-the-less.The other Sheik, this real Sheik he guessed, held himself more lightly, much in the way Link and other warriors did. As if readying himself for a fight of the physical kind. And there was a quiet pensiveness behind his eyes that awas different from Zelda's. He seemed harder, and more ready for action, not wanting a fight but always expecting one anyways. Something about him was different, Link aligned it more with the few times he'd seen Sheik without the weight of the world on his shoulders. The one time in the Temple of Fire when Sheik had seemed less motherly and more like something else, a new freind almost, unsure of where to step but moving foreward anyways. And the other time, in Kakariko Village when Sheik had been trying to seal the well, this Sheik other than the other, more like the one he'd seen following him in the shadows as compared to the one who'd met him in the temples (all but that one). This Sheik was more similiar to him, and Link felt, this Sheik would be easier to get along with then the one who kept himself aloof and far away. Once he got over the fact that he wasn't going to be 'babysitting' the Hero of Time, that is."Look," said Zelda motioning to the map, for what felt like the fourth or fifth time (really it was the second, but she wasn't keeping track). "This area here has been reported as highly dangerous. There is an outpost here, and the men there report frequent sightings of large cats and canines. Lizafols as well, all large enough to take down a full grown man, have taken down full grown men, men bigger than both of you I might add..." Sheik looked a little offended at this, and openned his mouth to say something about it, but Link cut him off, he knew that you didn't have to be big and tall to be strong, or to take something down that was bigger than he. That however, wasn't what he said."What about taking extra men with us, if it's as dangerous as you say, we might need extra help just to get through that forest." Not that he was really excited about following a bunch of soldiers through a man-eating forest, they'd be far to noisy, but it was starting to sound as if they might need the extra help."I would like nothing more then to send extra forces with you," Zelda said, pausing to look down at her hands. "However....""However, the king is being rather foolish on this matter, and ruefuses to take our warnings seriously. He's not in the mood to take talk of threat, other than the ones within our own borders. Especially threats brought to light by a woman." Impa finished for her, scowling.Zelda flushed slightly, pleased that there was someone to stand up for her."Well, the situations being what it is, you two are all we have. Well technically Link is all we have, we're sending Sheik without permission. But its you two or nothing.Link raised an eyebrow at this, he didn't think the Princess did to much lately without permission from her father. But like the saying goes; 'sometimes it's easier to appologize after the fact, than it is to ask for permisssion'. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Sheik looking slightly shocked, apparently, while everything else hadn't been news to him, this was. Link didn't think that Zelda would be getting any more protests from him.Zelda cleared her throat a little, trying to bring the topic back to head. She motion at the map again. "We know that a small group of chimeras and other magically-made creatures have been gathering just beyond this border. They've apparently formed a base on the other side of this canyon. The nearest are outposts here and here. You'll be expected at the farthest one, on the other side of the forest. They will provide you with any more provisions that you need, as well they'll provide you with well trained horses, because right now, we don't have any to spare. The canyon gives it some natural protections right now, but we'd like to stop this before these protections are tested. Because once this outpost is taken getting into Hyrule is going to be a cake-walk."Link studied the map carefully, memorizing the path they would be taking. Around the lake, over the ledges and mountains south of it, through that curses forest that was going to cause them so much trouble. And finally through a canyon, which was as far as the map went, they'd have to find a more extensive one at that outpost, when they stopped. Horses however, might become an issue."I won't need another horse," he announced. It would be better to get this and anyting else out of the way before it became an issue. "Epona's been battle trained, and tested many times, she'll more than be able to make this journey and fight on the other side if it comes to it."Impa nodded, as if this was to be expected. And Link wondered again, if she or Zelda remembered anything, and then if perhaps they'd been keeping tabs on him. That was a new thought, and he frowned slightly at it. If that were the case, he wasn't sure if he should be pleased, because if they cared enough to keep tabs on him then they must remember at least a little bit of the 'other time'; but part of him wasn't please at all with this particular thought, because it made him feel, that perhaps they hadn't trusted him, even after everything. He puzzled over this as the last of the kinks and knots of their journey were worked out, and before he could acknowledge it, Sheik was leaving the room to prepare, and Zelda was looking straight at him for the first time since he'd arrived."Now, Hero." She said, sitting for the first time, "we have some things to discuss. For example, where have you been for the last 7 years."And once again Link was torn between feeling happy and uneasy. She remembered him! But it didn't look like she was too happy about it.While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
