A/N: BTW The guy leading Eighmy around is Doctor John Larson, another OC. And I’m NOT a science person so I don’t go into detail about that stuff.
Chapter 2
“Miss Baxter.” Birkin said with a crooked smile. “Don’t tell me your going to be working for me?” He tried to sound traumatized.
Eighmy shuffled her feet.
“Miss Baxter?” Asked Doctor Larson, looking between Eighmy and Birkin. “Who’s Miss Baxter?”
Eighmy’s face turned pink as Dr. Birkin said. “Well I thought that she was.” He pointed at Eighmy who apparently found something very interesting on the floor.
“That’s not her name. This is Eighmy Jakeson!” Dr. Larson said like it was very obvious. “What would ever give you the idea her names was Baxter?” He asked Birkin. And if it was possible Eighmy’s face turned redder.
“Well being as that’s what she told me this morning. I guess you can say I was misled.” Both men turned their gaze to Eighmy, who still thought the floor was quite fascinating.
“Eighmy, is there a reason you lied to Dr. Birkin?” Larson asked, taking up his over serious tone.
“I don’t know.” She chanced a glance up at them, then quickly looked back down. “It made since at the time.”
Birkin laughed, which immediately made Eighmy look up and scowl at him. She hated being laughed at.
“May I ask as to what is so damn funny?” She said quite angry, which only seemed to entertain Birkin more.
Larson, who was completely lost, looked between the two of them three or four times before saying. “Did I miss something?”
Birkin, who had now been able to get a hold of himself, said. “Don’t worry about it John, I’ll handle it.” He walked Larson to the door and all but shoved him out. When the door closed he turned back to Eighmy, who was still angry about his laughing and was staring daggers at him. He chuckled.
“So why did you lie?” He asked taking a serious tone.
Eighmy Shrugged, embarrassed to state her flawed thinking.
Realizing that a shrug and a ’I don’t know’ was all the answer he was going to get, he said. “Obviously you don’t intend to tell me.” He took a few steps closer, which in turn made Eighmy take a few back.
“Why so afraid?” He asked as he stepped even closer, forcing Eighmy’s back against the lab table.
“I’m not afraid.” She tried to sound firm. “I just don’t like people being close to me.” She made a quick dash past him, then turned around when she felt she was a safe distains away, completely missing Birkin smirk.
“Ah I see.” He said turning around. “But that still doesn’t explain why you lied.”
Eighmy rolled her eyes again, not caring if he saw. “Look Doctor, yes I lied. And no I’m going to explain as to why I did.” She planted her hand s firmly on her hips.
“Oh is that so?” He crossed his arms over his chest.
“Yes it is.” She tried to look down her nose at him, but it was difficult since she was only 5’4. “And besides, I didn’t come here to be harassed by a creepy guy in a lab coat, who obviously thinks he knows it all.” He raised an eyebrow. “I came here to work.”
“Well for starters if you want to keep a job, it’s usually best not to try and insult your boss.” He put his hands on his hips, mocking her earlier actions.
She blushed, knowing that she was just digging herself a hole. “Yeah, I guess.” She dropped her arms to her sides and stared back at the floor.
“Well lets get started, we have a lot to do.” Birkin turned back to the table and once again started staring at the chemicals.
Eighmy just stared at him. “You going to get over here and help?” He asked, looking over his shoulder.
Eighmy nodded. “Yeah I’m coming.” She walked up next to him and looked over the elixirs and chemicals in front of her. “So what are you trying to do here?” She asked still confused about his quick dismissal of her lying.
“Here read this.” He handed her a file. “It should explain everything.” She took the folder and started to read through it.
A few minutes later Eighmy had read through it. “Ok got it.” She nodded her head as she spoke “So what do you want me to do, Sir?” She asked, handing him back the folder.
“Mix this.” He handed her a vial full of blue liquid. “With that.” He pointed to a vial with orange liquid, sitting on the table. “Then write down the results and let me know what happened.”
She nodded her head again. “No probs.”
Eighmy and Birkin worked in silence for about twenty minutes. During this time Eighmy wrote down everything that the chemicals did, but as she did she couldn’t keep from trying to chance glances at her boss.
“Can I help you with something?” He asked not taking his eyes from his work.
Eighmy’s eyes dropped back to her work. “No. Why?” She tried to sound innocent.
“You keep looking at me.” He said still not looking up.
“I was not!” Her hands found their place on her hips. “And besides even if I was how would you know? You haven’t stopped looking at those vials since we started.”
He smiled slightly. “Like you, I came here to work. Not to be stared at by a child with a nose ring.”
Eighmy would have smiled, maybe even laughed at his turnabout of her earlier words, but she did NOT like being called a child.
“I’m NOT a child.” Eighmy scowled at him.
He finally looked up from his work to look at her. “And I try not to think of myself as ‘creepy looking’. Though I’m sure your not the only one with that opinion.”
Eighmy smiled slightly at him. “Yeah I suppose most people don’t.” She ran a hand through her hair. “But I still don’t like people calling me a child.”
“Well as much as it pains me to tell you this.” Birkin said quite sarcastically. “You are very young.”
Eighmy glared at him. “Yes, well I maybe, BUT I’m still older then you when you first came to work here.”
He smiled. “Yes I suppose you are.” He rubbed his chin. “How old are you exactly?”
“Nineteen.”
He nodded. “Nineteen.” He said thoughtfully. “Nineteen.”
“Yes we’ve covered that I’m nineteen you can stop saying it.” Eighmy tried to look annoyed, but couldn’t quite put it off.
“Yes I suppose we have.” He looked back at the chemicals. “The chemicals seem to have reacted. We should get back to work. Unless you want to miss lunch.”
Eighmy nodded as she began to work once again, thinking to herself. “Damn my boss is strange.”
