Chapter Two.
“Are you sure this is their place?” Nero whispered, as they walked through the woods on the edge of the land as they looked upon a home. “The girl probably gave you her address instead, you know.”
“I checked the mail box already, kid. This is their place.” Dante replied in the same tone, as they crept closer and closer to the house.
They went down the driveway towards the pond before walking up another gravel road to where five raised garden beds were at. They mingled in with the tomato cages to keep themselves hidden incase they happen to look outside and see them.
“I think they are probably asleep since the lights in the living room are dark and most of the other rooms are dark as well.” Nero whispered.
“Maybe, but they would have to move fast,” Dante replied.
Just as Nero was about to reply, the hallway light flashed on. From the light that shown within the house, they could see the woman who had thrown the smoke bomb walk down the stairs and into another part of the house in a purple towel.
Dante whispered, “What is she doing?”
“I’m not sure but I am going to find out,” Nero stated as he started to move off, but was held tight. He glanced to see Dante’s hand on his jacket. “Why are you holding me back?”
“Because if she is wearing a towel, it means one thing – shower and I am not going to have a voyeur in my younger partner,”
“So, what’s the problem with making sure?” Nero replied.
“No, besides I need to know the truth about your breakup with your girlfriend?”
“Not much to say from what I told you before,” Nero stated. “I could ask the same about you with Lady and Trish,”
“I got pissed off at them both and they did say some harsh words to me,”
“You probably deserved some of the words, Dante.”
“Maybe, but they didn’t have to chew me out about accepting the lottery ticket as payment from the person who hired us to kill a demon off.” Dante stated. He recalled walking into the agency and seeing both girls standing there. He remembered the look of anger on their faces when they heard that payment was in the form of a lottery ticket.
“You accepted a lottery ticket as payment, Dante!” Trish roared at him. She turned to look at Nero. “And you, idiot, let him accept it!”
Nero raised his hands. “It was all the guy had as payment.”
Lady looked at him. “But what if it doesn’t win, then what? You lost money on that hunt!”
“So, its not like much money, we didn’t even do any serious damage this time around,” Dante replied.
“Besides, his aim is getting better or that the demons are getting slower for some reason,” Nero stated.
Trish looked at them both and started off on yelling at them, which caused Dante to rise from his chair and butt heads with her as they both bickered, but then, he grabbed the hilts of his guns under his jacket, which got Nero tackling him and yelling the girls away. They snapped off stating that they’re leaving and not returning.
Dante shrugged. “Maybe, I nearly pulled my guns on them, if you were not there to stop me, I probably would have shot them both. I was that angry, Nero and the thing is I never get that angry at them even when we do have arguments. It was just so strange for me. I don’t know what I’m going to do if they do return.”
“Are you going to apologize to them?” Nero asked, as they headed
Dante glanced up to look at the stars. “Yeah, I will and hope that they forgive me for my temper, considering that I now can pay for my debts before they get out of hand again.” He glanced over to him. “So are you going to tell me what happened with Kyrie?”
Nero climbed out of the tomato bed and sat on the edge of the bed itself. “You know we have been seeing each other seriously after the false Savior thing. It was about a year after that. I noticed a change in her after we had sex for the first time.”
“Like what, kid?”
“Distant about where she was going to be at. At first she would tell me but then, she just started to state visiting her friends when she got home and would head off to the spare bedroom to sleep in. She was always visiting her friends more and more, only come back to the house we shared late. Always stating that she was with her friends and lost time, but it was every single night this happened. After five weeks of this going on, I finally had it and followed her to where she was meeting up with some of her friends and they were clearly talking about me.”
“In a good way?” Dante asked.
Nero shook his head. “Nope, they were telling Kyrie to dump me. I don’t know why they started to tell her to dump me and the reason for them to be discussing me either. Kyrie and I had a great relationship. I really loved her. Fuck, look what I did to save her from what happened in Fortuna and after a year of us being together seriously and a few days after we had sex.”
“Maybe the sex was not that great?” Dante smirked.
“Dante!” Nero snapped off.
“Seriously, if they were talking to her about dumping you, they probably didn’t want her to have great sex by a sexy man like you,” Dante replied.
“Shut up, Dante, you haven’t been laid in a long time!” Nero snapped off, as he glanced up to look at the moon. He recalled how he trailed Kyrie to where she was meeting up with her friends. He basically listened to her friends tell her that Nero would bolt from her as he’ll be too busy to be a devoted boyfriend as he would be hunting devils down. Kyrie tried to protest but her girlfriends kept giving her more grief about it to where they stated that they saw him hanging around another woman Gloria, which he knew wasn’t true, but if he showed up and told them that wasn’t true, it would give them more fuel to fuel their gossip. He got up from the table he was sitting at and quietly walked away without telling her that he was there.
“Did you ask her about what you heard?” Dante asked.
“Wha?” Nero turned to look at him, pulled away from his thoughts.
“Did you ask her about what you overheard her friends saying to her?”
“No, I waited for her to return at midnight like she normally would. She saw my box which held Red Queen in it. For the first time in a long time, she asked if I had returned from a hunt. I asked her if she believed that I was loyal to her, to which she looked like a deer in an oncoming car’s headlights. I told her that it was over between us and I left without hearing anything from her.” Nero stated. “But once at the agency, I realized that I made a mistake by walking out and I called her, only to get the answering machine asking her to call me to talk as we need to talk about what happened. Only one time, I got through but it was her girlfriend who answered the phone. She called me all sorts of names and I hung up the phone.”
“It has been about . . .,”
“Three years since I left her,” Nero replied. “And the thing is, I miss talking with her but yet in a way, I don’t. But I would love to know why she was avoiding me for so long,”
“She hurt you good, kid. She probably didn’t even know that you had followed her and overheard.”
“Yeah, but she could have been honest with me about her feelings.” Nero said, as he stood up and looked at the house. “I think we better head back to the hotel and get some sleep. We’ll return in the morning.”
“Yeah, the best thing to do is leave before they find out that we’re here,” Dante replied, as he hopped off the tomato bed and drifted off into the shadows of the woods as his partner followed behind.
After they got back to their hotel room, Nero noticed at Dante was looking out the window. “So, can you at least tell me about our new agent since Morrison retired, Dante?”
Dante glanced back at him. “We have been dealing with our new agent for the past twenty jobs, Nero.”
“You mean all of the recent jobs came from this agent?” Nero asked. Dante nodded. “So who is he and will we be meeting up with him anytime soon?”
Dante shrugged. “We might and we might not. This one is a bit more mysterious than Morrison is.” ‘Only to you, kid, I know who it is and the thing is we met her tonight.’

Back in Fortuna, a woman in white looked out the window to the full moon. ‘I should find him and tell him the truth, it is only fair to him and to him,’
Stay tuned, the next chapter will come soon.
