Chapter 2: Storm the Fortress

Gentek, it was practically abandoned the weeks following Mercer’s rampage through the building and killing so many guards and scientists that had been unfortunate enough to get in his way. Alex worked and worked to find someone or something with information on where Fieldings was taking his son. Finally his search took him to the office of Dr. Sarah Fieldings within Gentek, allowing him a chance to see if there was something anything, left behind that would be of any help to him. Documents in locked filing cabinets were freed as he tore apart the metal so easily. There were no written documents within the woman’s office that aided him in his search and all it did was serve to infuriate Alex, until blue eyes spied the still working computer on her desk. Despite being such a high tech company, it was easy to hack into the system if you had once worked there. Fingers flew over keys as he spent half an hour hacking into the computer before taking another twenty minutes to hack into her e-mails. Alex skimmed through the titles of electronic messages and the names of senders that were still loaded in the inbox before clicking on one titled “PARAIAH Movement”. His lips moved as he quietly read the e-mail aloud to himself. “Dr. Fieldings. Per the request of Dr. Worthing, PARAIAH has been moved to the Colsworth navel base. You are to deliver HADES to the base once you have acquired it and ZEUS has been eliminated. For your sake, HADES had best be worth the trouble. Signed General Hollings.” The e-mail was dated three weeks ago, two weeks before he had been attacked and had his child stolen. Mercer was quick to type in where the exact location of the Colsworth navel base was, even super human viruses have to use Google Maps sometimes. With the information soon memorized, Alex leapt through the nearby window, creating a large crater in the ground as he landed with the tinkling of glass landing around him. He took off at a run, needing to figure a few things out before he would be able to save his son.

First things first, he was going to need to escape Manhattan. Guards weren’t as heavy around the various escape routes off the island, more than likely due to them believing that he was dead and no longer a threat. Alex prowled the area around the bridge leading out of Manhattan before spotting a single soldier standing close to one of the light armoured vehicles that one could have found populating the streets of Manhattan since the start of the infection’s outbreak. He moved silently, discreetly as he crept closer and closer towards the guard’s back, finally wrapping an arm around the soldier’s neck and another around his waist before completely absorbing and becoming the soldier. His timing was impeccable as a group of soldiers chatting to each other were walking over to the vehicle, they noticed Alex and one that was obviously the “leader” of the group spoke up. “Get in and get the engine running, there are others coming and we’re leaving, now move.” Those words were really the only thing that Mercer needed to hear, as he opened the door and hopped into the driver’s seat, the rest of the soldiers made their way into the back of the vehicle as well. Alex drove the vehicle as anyone would, finding this easier for a disguise when he was waved through the checkpoint at the bridge and made his way out of Manhattan. It had been at least a half hour out of New York City before Alex turned on those that inhabited the vehicle, leaving him alone as he got in contact with those he could trust.
“Ragland, Dana, I’m out of the city. It’s still too dangerous to get in too much contact with you guys. Dana, I need you to get me all the information you can on the Colsworth navel base.”
“Alex, are you sure you’re okay?” Dana, she wasn’t really his sister, not anymore, but she didn’t care and still treated him like her big brother. This also meant that he ended up explaining to both her and Ragland about what had happened to him and Skylar. “I’m fine, once I get to that base, I’m taking back Skylar and killing anyone who gets in my way.” Dana only sighed over the phone, knowing that there was no changing her brother’s mind. “Just try not to get killed then.” They kept the call short, mostly because Alex had more important things to do such as hunt down anyone that would have information he needed to get into that navel base.

It took nearly two weeks to travel all the way to the area where the navel base was, mostly because of military and his body demanding bio mass to survive. He was constantly finding military personnel to consume for information that he was always able to use in his search. A few phone calls to Ragland and Dana helped on getting him the knowledge he needed for infiltrating and escaping the base, making Alex grateful for the help he always received from the two of them. He slowly stepped from his latest light armoured vehicle and gripped the HK-36 that he had found within the truck as he made his way into the base. Everything seemed empty, abandoned as if no one had been there in years. Alex swallowed hard as he tentatively stepped into the base and glanced around for any sign of life; his thermal vision did nothing to aid him as he headed down a barren hallway in search for some form, any form, of life. A noise caught his attention as he believed he saw someone running down one of the adjacent hallways thanks to his ability to sense heat signatures. Spinning to chase after his target, he didn’t quite notice those who had snuck up from behind until he felt the smack of a gun butt against the back of his head. Alex collapsed to his knees, his hands were bound behind him as his helmet was tossed from his head. “Well well, it’s been a while since I’ve seen you. Surprising that you’re still alive, Mercer.” That voice sounded so familiar to his ears, but where he had heard it was what he couldn’t remember. “All of you leave and guard the entrance, I’ll deal with him.” Soldiers tromped off in the direction Alex had come from before he heard that voice once more. “So here I was, sent to this abandoned base with a few men just in case some unknown assailant was to show up and attack, and sure enough, you show up, Mercer.” The owner of the voice came into view as his wrists were undone, Cross looking down at him as Alex climbed to his feet. He was shocked to see the father of his child standing alive before him, the virus taking no time to crash their lips together in a desperate kiss that found him with Cross’ arms wrapped around his waist. He gave a slight whimper as he pressed his body against the larger man’s.

As the kiss broke, Cross glanced down at Alex’s slightly trembling form and becoming worried for the virus since Alex had never seemed to act like this at any time that Cross had fought him. “Mercer, what’s wrong? The last time I had seen you, you said that I had a child.” Alex was still clinging to Cross, his body ceasing it’s tiny trembles. “I-I thought you were dead; you were dead, you died on the aircraft carrier, I remember seeing you turn into that Hunter.” The captain had to think for a moment before he shook his head, “I hadn’t died, the Hunter must have had gotten some of my DNA, but you had said stuff about a child before I didn’t see you again.” Alex nodded as he tried his best to recall the conversation that was had back then. “Y-yeah…your son, our son, Skylar…they-they took him away. Gentek stole him from me and I found information that said he was here.” He was trying his best to think of what was really going on, after all, it was obvious that his son wasn’t there but it was also finding out that the one man he had ever fucked was still alive.

They walked together down the halls of the base while Alex tried to gather his thoughts over everything that had happened. He had explained to the captain that Skylar had been torn from his body and taken by Gentek, leaving him on the search for his child. “So I had found an e-mail that had claimed that Skylar was brought here with PARAIAH for experimentation. I came here to kill the ones who stole my son.” Even though he was trying hard to find his child, he hit a dead end in his search. Alex was becoming frustrated with the fact that he couldn’t find his son. Cross listened closely to everything that he was told, feeling a swell of parental need to protect his child that he didn’t even know. “All my group were told was to guard here and we hadn’t been informed of anyone coming here. It was General Hollings’ orders and you claimed that he had sent this e-mail to Dr. Fieldings that mentioned this base?” A nod from Alex and he was still wanting to slaughter Fieldings for what had happened, “Skylar has to be found, if he’s not then I worry about what might happen to him.” They began discussing what they could do to find their son, Cross agreeing to bring Alex straight to General Hollings in order to get information on Fieldings and their child.
