A/N: Written in response to Dribs, Drabs, and Doggy Tales Week 23: Nightmare prompt.
Nightmare Dr. Light stared out of the window of his 20th story tenement, watching as dusk cast his ruined city in copper. Soon the robots would begin their patrol. He tried to summon his strength, but it would not come. The white-haired man sighed and turned back to his son, whose eyes still held the question he had asked. The question he had to know. "I will tell you once again." His hands sunk into the pockets of his lab coat as his son regarded him patiently. "There was another who came before you; he was a hero and your brother and my son." He broke eye contact. "He fought bravely and he died bravely, but he was forsaken by the ones he wished to save and when he died..." His eyes found the floor. "He died in vain." Megaman stood tall against the against the backdrop of heavy machinery, waiting as his father's words sent the familiar chill up his spine. "I watched as the cowards took his helmet and marked his grave and I returned home." He stole a glance out of the window to the rapidly darkening city below. "My hands bled as I tore metal from metal, destroying everything I had ever known; I wanted to rip away every gift I had ever given the world, for they corrupted and mutilated everything I tried to do." He smiled. "But my hands did not obey; the pieces I tore began to come together under the work of my fingers and it something new began to take shape..." He returned his gaze to his son. "Before I understood, I had you." Megaman waited still; his father was not finished and he would get the whole story. The happiness in Dr. Light's face drained as he held his son's gaze. His eyes hardened. "That story's finished. Understand that there is nothing we can do. If you leave, you would fight for a people who refuse to comprehend that they have chosen their own end." He withdrew his hand from his pocket and clenched his fist in the air, rage dancing across his eyes. "You are all that I have left." He pointed a finger at his son. "You are not him!" He opened his palm and gestured his hand to the window. "His fight's not yours!" Megaman ran to the door and slid on his helmet before rushing down the staircase. "You cannot win!" Light bellowed into the night. Megaman walked through the city for the first time, watching as people stared, frightened as they recalled the elder son of Light. If everything that you said is true, there is no hope for them, but if I stay with you, I will never know the truth. Megaman thought, stealing deeper into the city. Even if they would not help themselves, if he were to leave them, they would all be doomed. Someone had to end this nightmare. He stopped as he approached the hilltop that was his brother's grave. His eyes drank every word of the crumbling stone slab, the words his father had carved. "You have heard me tell this story many times before you sleep... No matter how dark the city gets, even now, there is hope for man." It read. His anger flared as he read the crimson words written over the epitaph. "Hope rides alone" Without another thought, he turned and began to run. Buildings flew past him as he picked up speed towards the fortress of his destiny. Dr. Wily's voice blared over the loudspeakers in an attempt to stifle the uproar generated by the city's new hero. Words to drive back the mob headed by an unstoppable leader, an unbeatable machine. "This is how it is!" The voice blared. "Do not say this is how it has to be!" "We have control!" "As I live, there is no evil that will stand!" Megaman screamed into the night, now inspiring his crowd beyond the fear of their oppression. "And I will finish what was started, the fight of Protoman!" His voice shattered the night as his mob cried out in asynchronous rage. They had their second chance and they would not fail. They would not lose. Megaman rushed through the advancing army of robots, felling them one by one without mercy. The cries of his crowd grow louder and propel him forward, never slowing, never giving a false movement - each shot kills and each movement has reason. Blood pounds in his ears as he screams at the leader of the army, telling him to send the best he has. "I come for vengeance for the first son of Light!" His voice carried through the sound of explosions and screeching metal. He would have his vengeance. He would have justice. He would have freedom and the wreckage he had to traverse was insignificant. By morning, the world would be forever changed. Works Cited The Protomen "Funeral For A Son" The Protomen.
