The mead really was good… fresh brews of any type were not common on the road. Random looked across the chess board at Anders. And he was really very appealing. Random never thought he'd be interested in a mage, probably a hold over from his experiences with Morrigan and Wynn… but Anders, hummmm… On the other side of the board, Anders picked up his rook and toyed with it idly. He looked thoughtful for a moment and then replaced it in the same square he'd just removed it from. This was a chess game, but it wasn't being played on the board in front of them. There was something about the Commander. In truth, had any other man looked at Anders as Random was looking at him now he would have run him through or just run… OK, probably just run, especially from a powerful warrior like his chess opponent. But… he was, well, liking it. Liking the attention from his Commander. Liking the careful, courtly way Random was watching him, listening to everything he said, laughing at his puns and jests, even those that made Anders himself wince. Yes, he had to admit, he liked the attention. It felt… comfortable. Random leaned back, sighing, and murmured so low Anders had to lean forward to hear, "I am about to say something that you may find… disturbing. I hope not, but I recognize the possibility. If you would prefer that I not say, just nod and we will speak no more of it." Anders cocked his head carefully, making the movement clearly not a nod. "Very well. And even so, after 'tis said, if you say you would rather speak of something else, so it shall be. In this matter, you shall lead. It will always be your choice where things… stop." Despite the serious tenor of the words, Random was smiling and relaxed, awaiting a response. "Yes, I think I understand… go on." In the back of his mind Anders was pretty sure that he wouldn't have uttered those words had he been just a little less drunk. Well, the Commander was known for his timing. "I find you… appealing. You are witty and handsome and easy to be with. Do you find this troubling?" Random was still perfectly at ease. Anders felt that whatever his answer was, it would be taken with equal good grace. But the truth was, yes, damn it, he'd been sitting here for some time now thinking thoughts that he didn't think he should think. Didn't think he would ever think for all of that. He had nothing against those who had other preferences, but he'd always considered himself a ladies man par excellence. So what was this? He looked at Random's calm face, looked into the humor sparkling in those eyes, and, taking himself in hand, replied, "Ummmm, yes. I mean, well, yes, I… I find you, uh, what was your word, 'appealing?' In truth, although if you had not brought it up I would not say, I find you much more than that. It's not something I was, well, wiling to admit to myself, but now that you've, uh, brought it all out in the open, as it were…" What was this! He was babbling. He, Anders, was many things, but he was not a babbler. And then it happened. Oh the humiliation! He blushed! He actually blushed! He could feel it creeping up from his neck to his cheeks. He was going to die, right here, now, please Maker now, of embarrassment. Random reached out and gently covered Anders' hand with his, then moved it back. "It's all right. Take your time. We have all night." Anders blinked. The mere mention of "night" did it again. Another accursed blush. This was getting way out of hand. Where was that mage training when he really really needed it? Discipline! He took a deep deep breath, letting it out and consciously slowing his heartbeat. He could see laughter playing at the edges of Random's lips, but fortunately the Commander had the decency to keep it to himself. He supposed that he was making a fool of himself, babbling and blushing like the most callow school boy. But that… would end… now. He was back in control and would handle whatever was to come as a man, not a boy. Putting on his best manly leer, raising an eyebrow and turning his head seductively, Anders teased, "Sooooo, you like me? Well, what's not to like? I'm only surprised it took you so long to recognize my sterling qualities." Random nodded. "Very good Anders. I'm impressed. Nicely played. Now how do you really feel?" It was gently said, but was like a bolt of ice. So, he wasn't going to joke his way out of this? So be it. "Honesty is it? And so early in the relationship? I'm saddened. What happened to the chocolates and flowers?" Smiling, Random said, "Well, I did give you a kitten." "Yes, the kitten, of course! I should have known right then that you had evil designs on my fair young body. "How I feel is that I want you. I really, very much, do want you in a very physical way and the sooner the better. I've never felt this way before about anyone… well, any man I mean… lots and lots and lots of women of course… so sorry for being awkward. But yes. If that's what you want to hear, then yes." Random sat up, leaning his arms on the table in front of the chess board as Anders leaned back and regained his goblet, gulping the dregs and holding it out for refill. Looking carefully at his friend, Random said quietly, "Thank you for that. It means a great deal to me… your honesty as well as your feelings towards me. And I too must be honest. There are… complications. I have a lover back in Denerim and I will return to him when this is over. Loyalty is important to me, as it is to he, for reasons that I will not go into at the moment. But know whatever is between us, it will end when I return to Denerim." Anders wasn't sure what he was feeling and his face eloquently expressed his confusion. "But if you are so, as you say, loyal, then why are we talking? Why even have this… conversation? Why put me in this position. I didn't think you cruel, but…" Random held up a hand, palm out. "I am sorry. I did not finish what I needed to say. Be assured, I am not cruelly teasing you. My love and I have an… agreement… for when I am away. He knows me, better than I know myself I'm sure, for he sees me with honest eyes, and he knows that when I am away, particularly when I am in battle, that I have certain…needs… and that suppressing these needs is… painful. And, more important, I just don't fight as well. He would like me home in one piece, so he is… tolerant… of my nature." Anders was getting his humor back. Fortunately it never deserted him for long. He began, "So I am to be your bit of fluff on the side while you're on campaign then? Well, at least you have good taste in fluff, I'll say that much for you. And at the worst I get an interesting experience and a broken heart? Sounds fair enough. I'd rather have the experience, heart broken or no, then not have it, so what are we waiting for. I believe that your room is larger and more comfortable?"
