Pain. All-encompassing, fiery pain that made the agony of watching Riku and Kairi together seem like a pinprick on his finger. The scream burst from his chest before he had a chance to stop it, darkness sparkling at the edges of his vision. Inside, he heard Roxas screaming too, and further away, Riku and Kairi, terror lacing the edges of their voices. The keyblade dropped to the sand with a muffled thump. It felt like his muscles were being torn apart, his bones broken, and his skin flaying off. The darkness at the corner of his eyes was spreading, but before it overtook him completely, he saw Riku push the boat up onto the sand, leaping through the water and trying to get to him.
Sora reached out with one hand, a gentle smile on his strained face, glad that despite everything, he’d have one chance to see Riku before he vanished. The silver-haired boy was reaching for his hand, too, and Sora felt the barest hint of pressure against his palm where Riku’s fingers were clutching for him. Just the barest second of pressure, of warmth, and then the darkness consumed him. ~*~ Riku looked up from Kairi and saw Sora wandering into the water, pausing every few moments as though he wasn’t quite sure of what he was doing. Then he dove into the water, and started swimming towards the play island. He turned his attention back to Kairi, knowing she’d have to go home soon, and wanting to steal every spare moment with her he could. It wasn’t until she pulled back and looked around that he thought to wonder why Sora would leave without saying anything, and head to their secret play area. “Where’d Sora go?” “To the island. Want to go with him?” Riku stood up, a dark feeling lodging in his stomach as he thought about Sora. “I’m going,” he said a moment later, more firmly. “Me too. The boats over here, I think.” Kairi pushed some tall dune grass aside, and revealed their little boat. As kids it held all three of them, but now Riku hoped it would stay afloat with just one of them. He knew it would carry Kairi – she was the only one who really still used it, after all – but suddenly getting to the island was the most important thing he could think of. If the boat sank, he’d just keep swimming. “Riku…” He looked over at his girlfriend, her red hair swaying in the breeze, catching fire in the setting sun. God, she’s beautiful. “What’s up?” “I don’t know. I just have a bad feeling about this. Have you noticed anything weird about Sora lately?” Riku scratched his head, using his other hand to guide the boat out of the grass and into the water. He held it with both hands while Kairi climbed in, and then shook his head. “Not really. Why?” Kairi looked towards the island, where Sora was faintly visible on the beach. “I don’t know.” Riku rowed as powerfully as he could, and the little boat fairly flew over the waves. A bright gleam of light caught his eyes, and he looked up towards their destination, realising that they were much closer than he’d thought, and that Sora was holding a keyblade in his hand, giving it a few practice swings. He sighed in relief, realising that his worries were unfounded. Sora just wanted to practice a little bit, out of sight. He might not appreciate the intrusion, but then again, maybe he wouldn’t mind a spar – Riku was pretty out of practice, too. “Hey, Sora!” he called, intending to ask – but when Sora looked up, the expression on his face stalled the words unspoken. There was a bitter, twisted look in his eyes, something Riku would never have believed the younger boy capable of. A wry smile twisted his lips, and he held the keyblade up to his own chest. Riku almost forgot to keep rowing. “Sora! Sora, no!” Kairi’s scream split the air like lightning. Almost unaware, Riku jumped out of the boat, pulling it the rest of the way up the shore, far enough out of habit that it wouldn’t drift off with the tide. Sora was yelling, almost screaming, and everything felt too slow. The keyblade falling – Riku felt he could see the air moving out of the way – a placid, almost content look as his eyes met Sora’s – reaching for Sora’s hand – too slow, everything – Sora vanished into a shower of light. Behind him, Kairi was still screaming. Grief, rage, shock – too overwhelmed to do anything but stare, Riku saw the lights that had been his best friend waver for a moment, and then pull themselves together. For a split second, he hoped – wondered – prayed – Roxas formed on the sand, clutching at his chest. The swirling emotions rushing through his heart battled once, and rage won. Blindly, Riku pulled his fist back and slammed it into Roxas’ jaw, sending the nobody flying backwards. “What the hell –” he began, raggedly. Roxas arched, his face twisted. “Oh god! It hurts!” Writhing on the sand, Roxas seemed completely unaware of Riku and Kairi’s presence. Riku himself had almost forgotten Kairi was there until she flung herself down on the sand beside him, drawing his head up into her lap. “Oh, Roxas! Why! Why did Sora do that?” Roxas opened his eyes and looked up at her, pain creasing the corners of his eyes. “I...” He took a deep breath, and some of the tension eased from his shoulders. “Ow…” He rubbed his jaw, and scowled up at Riku. “Why’d you hit me?” “What the hell did you do to Sora?” Gazing into familiar eyes framed by completely unfamiliar blond hair, Riku was utterly stunned when a sheen of wetness clouded the blue, spilling over into tears that slipped down his cheeks. “Sora…” Glaring up angrily through his hair, Roxas sneered at Riku. “Wouldn’t you like to know?” Before the thought cleared his mind, Riku watched his fist fly out and connect with Roxas’ face again. Kairi cried out in surprise as the Nobody was jerked out of her arms. “Sora’s still in there, Riku! Don’t hit him!” Roxas propped himself up on one elbow, rubbing his face. “I probably deserved it that time,” he muttered. “I can’t tell you right now. He’s … too far away.” He shot a surreptitious glance in Kairi’s direction. Riku followed his gaze, and narrowed his eyes. The message was clear; so long as Kairi was there, Roxas wasn’t talking. “Fine,” he said. “Come by my house tomorrow night. Have fun explaining this to your mom and – Lea.” For the first time, Roxas’ eyes widened with something other than pain or surprise. Riku was furious to see… happiness. He almost hit him again, but took a single look at Kairi’s face made him think better of it. “Your house tomorrow night,” Roxas repeated, dazed. “Sure.” -- (Edited for formatting issues. )While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
