Chapter 2: Part of Your World. 4 Years Earlier...... It wasn't more than a handful of months after he'd discovered the picture of his family, as well as the box of pictures his mom had been hiding, that Renee Gearheart had died of alcohol poisoning. Sora watched from a quiet distance as her casket was lowered into the ground. The funeral had been small and quiet. Just him, a couple distant cousins he didn't know, and his Uncle Cid. The blond man had a cigarette in his mouth as always, and was fidgeting in his already loosened suit. “Dammit I hate these things...” The large man grumbled as he stood next to his small nephew. The 13 year old had been quiet the entire day. He'd cried for his mother, which almost had surprised the older man, knowing the kind of hell it must have been to live with his sister. Renee'd had an army of personal demons, and seeing how pure Sora's eyes, and his heart, had remained in spite of it all, it was nothing short of a miracle, he knew that much at least. Grumbling as he popped yet another button on his dress shirt, black jacket tucked into the crook of one arm, Cid sighed heavily and finished off his smoke, putting it out before he leaned back against the tree they stood next too. Since she'd died, Sora had been staying with him and his young wife Yuffie. He couldn't help but feel bad for not having taken the boy in sooner, but honestly, he hadn't known just how bad things had been until he'd been woken up at 3 in the morning, by his scrawny nephew standing on his front porch clutching a backpack, and a police officer at his side. At first, Cid had thought maybe his sister had fallen in with some abusive prick again, one that would have succeeded in killing her, or trying to kill Sora. But when he found out that it had been Renee, essentially, that had killed herself, he'd been a bit relieved. And Hyne knows how bad he felt for that. Especially when he recalled that lost, deer in the headlights look Sora'd had about him the night it had happened. Without his mother to take care of, the boy didn't feel like he had a purpose in life. “Kid... You doin' okay?” Cid asked gruffly as he nudged Sora's shoulder with his elbow. Startled from his thoughts, Sora nearly toppled over, but caught himself, looking up at his uncle, before offering a surprisingly big smile, and nodding. It was only moments before the cheerful look faded, and the brown haired teen looked away. Cid was quickly realizing that the convincingly happy smile had been forced. Most likely every smiled he'd received from Sora had been forced. He couldn't understand how a kid could go through what he had and still be okay. “Uncle Cid... Did you know about Roxas?” Cid wasn't sure what startled him more. The question he was asked, or how firm Sora sounded asking it. “...Yeah I knew.” He mumbled softly, wondering if this would make Sora hate him. Sending a sidelong glance up at his Uncle, Sora was almost relieved to know it was true. Sure, he was mad. Hurt, Upset that it had been kept from him. But the past can't be changed.... “Do you know where they live?” Sora inquired, sighing as he stretched his arms up to fold behind his head. He was sad, yes. He was so sad for his mother, and her life, and the way it had ended. But now that the harshness of her death was beginning to soften to him, he almost felt a sense of relief. He wouldn't have to spend each day with baited breaths, waiting to come home and find out if she'd brought home another guy from a bar, if he'd be cleaning up vomit, or holding her while she cried over memories she wouldn't tell him. He was relieved she was dead, but he refused to admit it to himself. He couldn't say that. What kind of son would he be? Not a good one, he knew that much. Cid nodded a bit, one hand digging his rumpled cigarette pack from his pocket, tapping one stick to surface so he could catch it between his lips, and light it quickly with a match. Only after he'd taken in a deep drag and let the nicotine fill him again, he grimaced a little, thinking of what those same little sticks of tobacco had done to his little sister. After another drag, he put the cigarette out almost suddenly, and exhaled hard. “....Yeah I know.” OoO0OoO Careful not to jostle his brother to much on the unstable mat of the trampoline they were sunbathing on, Roxas rolled onto his stomach, letting the pale gold of his back stretch out under the sun. Head crooked and resting on folded arms, the blond watched Sora through squinted eyes for a while. His brother was tanner than he was, naturally having a darker skintone, and able to tan easier than he could. Roxas always seemed to burn before he could get that honey brown his brother always had. But it hadn't always been this way. He could remember how small, and pale Sora had been, that first time he'd seen him... OoO0OoO DIIIING DOOOOONG-DIIIII-DIIIING DOOOOOOONG. Sighing as he flipped through the channels on the TV, even while the doorbell rang, he waited, listening to see if his dad would answer. “DAD~ THERE'S SOMEONE AT THE DOOR!” He called across the hall to his fathers den. “Yeah I hear it, son. I'm on the phone. You have two legs and two arms. Go answer It.” Auron replied as he walked through the hall to his den from where he'd been in the kitchen. Their home was rather large, especially considering it was just the two of them living there, but Roxas couldn't remember living anywhere else. His dad had a decent job that let them live comfortably. Roxas was, perhaps, a bit spoiled. Huffing as he hauled his body off the leather sofa, the blond boy dragged his feet to the foyer, rolling his eyes as the doorbell rang a few more times, impatiently. “Yeah yeah I'm coming!” He exclaimed to himself, shuffling a little faster. When he got to the door, and swung it open with an almost bored expression on his face, he looked up at the man standing in front of him. He was pretty short for an adult, but not terribly. He was blond, and stocky, and dressed in a plain white t-shirt and blue jeans. A yellow windbreaker tied around his waist. It had been raining a bit that day, but for the moment they were having a pleasant sunbreak. At first, Roxas didn't notice the smaller figure, huddled behind the man. “What?” He asked, before remembering his manners, and standing up a bit straighter. “Can I help you? Are you looking for my dad?” He asked, his tone a little nicer. Something about the man seemed a little familiar, but he was sure he'd never seen the guy before... “Yeah, kid. Is Auron here?” He asked, gruffly, his voice having a deep southern drawl to it that was a little comical to him. He was chewing on a toothpick like a fiend. “Yeah just a sec.” Turning from the door, Roxas faced the deep hallway. “DAD IT'S FOR YOU!” He yelled out, before looking back. “He should be just a moment...” He said, before trailing off, feeling a wave of numbness roll through him as his eyes landed on... himself. But no, not himself. Just his eyes. His eyes were staring right back at him, from beside this guys hip. There was a hole, formed by the way the blond man had his arm crooked, hand resting on his hip. And there was a young boy clinging to the back of that white t-shirt it seemed. All he could make out was a mop of spiky, unruly brown hair, and wide, frightened blue eyes. For a moment he could see nothing else but that face. Even as Auron finally came down the hall, speaking to Roxas. “....stand there and gawk Roxas, who is it?” Aurons voice rang out, making both young boys jump. The brunette darted back to hide behind the blond man, who sighed. Roxas swallowed hard and his head snapped to the side, and up, to look at his father. “Daddy...” He said quietly, looking confused. This look on his sons face made Auron hurry over. “What the he-.......” Stopping mid sentence, hand clenched on the door, Roxas couldn't remember ever seeing his father so tense. “Cid. What are you doing here? Give me one reason not to slam the door in your face. Roxas, go to your room.” Auron didn't look from the man, Cid, and Roxas didn't leave. He wanted to know what this was about. “Roxas GO!” Auron said more firmly. And just as he started to shift his weight from one foot to the other, hesitant still to leave, he saw that face again, though he knew his father hadn't. He couldn't leave. “Auron, Renee is dead.” Who was Renee? Who is Cid? Who is this kid with my eyes? “....What?” His fathers voice was a strange, strained whisper, that gave Roxas the chills. “Yep. Last month. Drank 'erself ta death.” This Cid guy shifted a little, and sighed, rubbing the back his his head with one hand. Roxas was silent still as he waited for something to happen. Auron was silent though, swallowing hard as he received what was obviously bad news. “Dad.... What's goi-” “What about Sora?” Auron said, not hearing the half question whispered by his son. Cid just smirked a bit. “Who's Sora?” Roxas asked more firmly, getting a little indignant. He didn't really like being ignored. “Dad what's going on?” He implored. Cid cocked an eyebrow, finally looking down at Roxas, and chuckling. “So you didn't tell Roxas either, huh?” He asked, the question obviously directed to his father. Sighing in frustration, the blond teen crossed his arms over his chest, black and white shirt wrinkling a bit as he did. “Tell me what?!” He nearly cried out. Neither Cid or Auron spoke for a few moments, Auron in obvious shock, and at a loss for words. It seemed Cid was just as impatient as Roxas, because his cursed quietly. “Kid, I'm your Uncle. Sora is yo-” “I'm your brother.” A new voice rang out over Cids, the boy with his eyes had spoken. And after his words fell silent, this boy, Sora, stepped out from behind Cid finally, to stand in front of him. At first, Roxas didn't understand. His brain wasn't registering, or comprehending the words he'd just heard. “My.... brother?” He repeated blankly, staring at the other. They were the same height. Both of them had the same facial structure, and those eyes... It was undeniable. But Roxas could spot all the differences right away. The hair, Sora's nose was a little longer than his, his skin was pale and white, almost a little yellow with the natural olive tint he had. His torso was longer, while Roxas had longer legs, but still some how they were both exactly the same height, eye level with each other. “Your twin brother.” Aurons voice finally broke through quietly. He was finally over his shock, for the most part it seemed. His tone was a mixture of grim, and awe, leaving it sounding strained and almost.... desperate. “I have a twin brother.” He said again, blinking. Suddenly, almost out of nowhere, Sora, this boy that was supposed to be his brother, laughed, and smiled, a his hands coming up to fold behind his head, eyes creased. “I know it's crazy right? I didn't believe it at first either!” Baffled by the sudden cheer of this boy who had only just reminded him of a frightened mouse, Roxas gaped at him, and his surprise only deepened as he heard his father chuckle. Looking up at Auron, he stepped back once, and stared, as his father moved forward, and caught this boy in, pulling him into a hug. His dad was hugging this stranger. Why.... Why did he want to hold him too? Was his real. Looking up at this new 'uncle' Roxas was lost, and Cid could see it, Grinning, the older man just nodded and grinned. “It's true, kid. Trust me. I was there when you two were born. You want proof? You both have a birth mark on your right a-” “OKAY OKAY I BELIEVE YOU!” Roxas yelled over his voice, shaking his head to clear it as he looked back to his father, who was finally pulling away from Sora, but only just a bit. His hand remained on the brunette's shoulder. Frowning and taking a few steps closer again, Roxas glanced at his father uncertainly and then to his..... brother. At almost the same time, both boys raised their hands, jerking back when they realized they'd been about to do the same thing. But soon enough relaxed, and followed through. Respectively, each twin resting a hand on the others face, testing to see if the other really existed. Sora grinned suddenly, and for some reason, Roxas couldn't help but grin too. “Oh man.... The guys at school are NEVER gonna believe this....” Roxas said, and much to his surprise, his new brother... his old brother.... His twin, dove forward, and for a long time, held onto his twin. His missing half. And for the first time, they both felt almost whole..... OoO0OoO “DINNER TIME GUYS!” Startling awake from his nap, Sora shot upright at the voice of their father calling out into the back yard. Roxas was slower to sit up, having pulled himself from his thoughts with a sigh, and a yawn. Grinning at his brother, Sora hopped off the trampoline, only to flop onto his face with a 'woops!'. Roxas just shook his head and climbed off carefully, heading up to the back porch, even as his clumsier, older brother scrambled to catch up with him. It was the last day of summer, and tomorrow would be their first day at Twilight Town High School. A new start for them both. The twin boys had just turned 17 month prior, and they could feel change on the horizon. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
