Chapter 2 – A Controversial Request
I stopped dead in my tracks. What in Andraste’s name is she doing here? “Do not be alarmed. It is only I.” “Morrigan?” I raised an eyebrow. She was staring at the fire in my room, and her black hair shone in the firelight. “Is everything all right?” “I am well,” she replied. “’Tis you who are in danger. I have a plan, you see. A way out. The loop in your hole.” She turned around and walked slowly towards me. Her gold eyes twinkled with mystery. “I know what happens when the archdemon dies. I know a Grey Warden must be sacrificed, and that sacrifice could be you. I have come to tell you this does not need to be.” I walked towards her and crossed my arms, suspicious. Save for Leliana, Morrigan had been my best friend. I trusted her with my life… but this was unusual behavior, even for her. “And how do you know about this?” I asked her. “I only just found out about this moments ago.” “I know a great many things,” Morrigan replied. “How I know is not quite as important as what I am offering you, however.” Whatever does she mean, ‘this does not need to be’? There’s another way? I uncrossed my arms and waited for her to continue. “I offer a way out. A way out for all the Grey Wardens, that there need be no sacrifice. A ritual… performed on the eve of battle, in the dark of night.” This can’t be good. “Why all the secrecy? I don’t trust this.” I eyed her carefully. “Anything to do with magic stirs one’s fear, especially amongst those who do not understand it. What I speak of is old magic, a ritual from a time long before the Circle of Magi was ever created. Some would call it blood magic, but I think that means little to one like you.” I half-smiled. She knew me too well. I knew blood magic was dangerous, but I also knew that it had its uses… and I had even exploited it once or twice, like when I went to Soldier’s Peak. I sighed. “Then tell me more, Morrigan.” “What I propose is this: convince Alistair to lay with me. Here, tonight.” My eyes bugged out of my skull and I caught my breath. “And from this ritual a child will be conceived within me.” I bit my lip to keep from swearing. “You can’t be serious—” “I am,” she stated simply. Morrigan was losing her patience. “And how… in the Maker’s name would this work?” “The child will bear the taint, and when the archdemon is slain, its essence will seek the child out like a beacon. At this early stage, the child can absorb the essence and not perish. The archdemon is still destroyed, with no Grey Warden dying in the process.” I scoffed at her. “So the child becomes a darkspawn? How will that make things any better?” “Not at all. It will become something different: a child born with the soul of an Old God.” That’s it. Morrigan is crazy. “After this is done, you allow me to walk away… and you do not follow. Ever. The child will be mine to raise as I wish. Then again, she’s never been wrong before… “Why Alistair? Why not Riordan?” “Because Riordan would never agree to it, for one. And because he is too old. His taint might not work. Alistair’s taint is still strong and will most certainly work.” I laughed at her. “You actually think Alistair will agree to this?! You know how he feels about you… how he feels about me.” “I’m sure you can convince him.” She was completely serious. I sighed and bit my lip. There was no way either of us could die tomorrow. I couldn’t live with myself if Alistair died. “All right,” I finally said. “I’ll do it.” “A wise decision. I shall wait here, then, while you go and speak with Alistair. I urge you to be convincing.” What have I just agreed to? I walked down the hall with heavy feet. I kept thinking about calling it off, but I loved Alistair too much to risk him dying tomorrow. I opened the door to his room slowly and walked in. He was standing next to his bed, still awake. His goofy, honey-brown hair stood up in the front and the same-colored eyes looked at me mysteriously. “I see you can’t sleep either. I also saw Morrigan outside your room earlier, and the look she gave me… that was icy even for her. Is something up?” I gave him a pathetic half-smile and stood a few feet away from him. “Alistair, we need to talk.” “Oh,” he replied. “I guess whatever Morrigan had to say, it’s big.” He sighed. “This is what I get for becoming king. Everyone always brings you the bad news. So what is it, then?” Rats running amok? Cheese supplies running low? I can take it.” He had his arms crossed and I knew behind the sarcasm he wanted the truth. How can I even tell him? I decided to break it to him easily: “I love you. You know that, right?” He laughed slightly. “Could you make it sound more ominous? Tell me already.” I took a deep breath. “What if I told you there was a way to avoid dying tomorrow?” “You mean with the archdemon, right? If you mean running away, I can’t do that. But… you don’t mean that, do you?” His face was puzzled, eyebrow raised. “What is this about?” I paused for a moment, biting my lip. My eyes flashed quickly in every direction like they always did when I was deep in thought. “Alayna? I know that look. Please, just… You’re making me nervous! Are you all right?” His voice was filled with concern. At last, I decided telling him outright would be the best decision. “You need to sleep with Morrigan. As part of a magic ritual,” I said, trying to keep my tone even. He laughed. “All right, that’s pretty funny. Nice way to cut the tension. You really had me worried there for a moment. So what’s really up?” he asked, leaning against his bed. I stared into his eyes. “I’m completely serious.” He laughed again, harder this time. “Cute. This is payback, right? For all the jokes? But… y—you—you’re not joking,” he stuttered. “You’re actually serious.” He stood up straight and began pacing the room. “Wow, be killed by the archdemon or sleep with Morrigan. How does someone make that kind of choice?” He stopped pacing and looked me in the eyes. “You’re not actually asking me this, are you? What kind of ritual is this, anyway?” I paused and held my breath. Honesty came out, again. “I won’t lie to you.… It will produce a child.” He had a paroxysm. “WHAT?! I… I must be hearing things, but are you telling me to impregnate Morrigan in some kind of magical sex rite?!” I bit my lip and didn’t speak, so he continued, with a more controlled voice. “This… child… why would Morrigan want such a thing? Does she want an heir to the throne?” I shook my head. “All she said is that you will never see it.” “Right until it marches up with an army to claim the throne, I’m sure.” He turned around and walked away across the room and sat in a chair next to the armoire. “Look, even if I was willing to entertain this idea… and I’m not saying I am… is this really what you want me to do? Are you sure…?” I felt his pain as if it were my own. I was connected to him like I was connected to darkspawn. I didn’t know if it was because of the taint in our blood that we could feel each other, or if it was that in combination with our love, but I could feel him. Sense him. I could feel Riordan, too, but not as strongly. I literally felt the blood in my veins shift when we were near each other… and near darkspawn. It was stronger when we were closer. Alistair had even told me that he’d felt the same connection, so I knew he could feel my emotions, as well. We had even been able to guess each other’s thoughts a few times.* “I don’t like this any more than you do, Alistair.” I kept my voice even. “Of course I don’t want you to sleep with anyone but me – if I did, that would be sick. But neither of us can live without the other. I couldn’t carry on if you died.” I blinked back tears. “But if it means we both walk away from this, alive… you have to trust me,” I persuaded him. He scoffed and I walked towards him, hoping to ease the tension. “I do trust you,” he answered. After some time, he said, “If this is what you think is best… I’ll do it.” He groaned loudly. “Where is she? Let’s go and get this over with before I… change my mind.” As we walked down the hall to my room we didn’t speak. Maker, what have I done? I asked myself. Morrigan was still facing the fire when we got there, and she turned around when we got close. “’Twould seem your talk is done?” she asked innocently. “Great,” Alistair groaned. “So this isn’t a dream after all.” Morrigan ignored him and became serious. “What is it to be, then? Has a decision been reached?” “Alistair has agreed to your… request,” I replied. “Wait,” Alistair said before Morrigan could speak. “I want to ask about this… child. The one you want.” “Interesting,” Morrigan said. She looked at me. “Honesty wouldn’t have been my first choice.” I rolled my eyes. “I just want to be sure that you’re not going to use this – against Fereldan. That this bastard child of mine isn’t going to show up some year…” “Of that you have my word,” Morrigan interrupted. Alistair sighed. “Why don’t I feel any better about this? All right. Let’s… just get this over with.” “Let us go somewhere more private, Alistair. And believe me when I say you will not hate this quite so much as you believe.” I nearly threw up in my mouth. Morrigan and Alistair looked at me, and Morrigan exited the room quietly. But Alistair turned to me and stroked my hair. I looked down and closed my eyes. “Alistair, I—” But before I could say more he placed his hand under my chin and pulled it up so he could see my eyes, which were open now. He looked pained: his eyebrows were furrowed and his lips were tight. He whispered, “I love you,” and gently placed his lips on mine. Chills travelled down my spine as they always had when he kissed me. I reclosed my eyes and kissed him back. It was a short kiss. He pulled back and stared into my eyes for a few seconds and turned to leave. “I love you,” he said again. “And I love you, Alistair. More than anything.” He walked out and I was left by myself. I walked to my bedroom door and glanced down the hall to Riordan’s room. I wonder if he heard any of that. No matter. It’s too late now. I closed the door and tried not to think about what would start in that room in a few minutes. I still couldn’t believe what I’d asked Alistair to do. I sighed and shook my head. I’m going to regret this, I thought. I still didn’t like the idea, but we’d be alive, and that’s what mattered. If Morrigan’s ritual worked, that is. I removed Starfang from my back and dressed in my nightclothes. I shuddered as I heard a distinct moan come from the room down the hall. “Sounds like they’re enjoying themselves. Maker knows they’ll wake the whole estate.” I sighed and collapsed onto the bed, pulling the sheets over me. I was alone with my thoughts. Maker, what was I thinking? Sex… with Morrigan! Of all people! Alistair despises Morrigan. The only people he hates more are Loghain and Anora… but Loghain is dead and Anora is locked up in a tower, or dungeon, or whatever somewhere. It doesn’t matter as long as she’s out of the way. She had to know turning on me would give her trouble. Nobody double-crosses me. But even after we saved her from Howe, she had the nerve to think I would let her have the throne! I sighed. Arl Howe. I still can’t believe Howe turned on my family and killed my parents. He murdered them in cold blood, and for what? Highever? Proof that he is better than my father? What was it that he said? ‘I deserve more’? More what? More glory, power, land? I hope the Maker spits on him and everyone in his family for murdering my family like that. At least he’s dead, now. I’ll never forgive him or his family... Except maybe… No. Not even him. Never. When I was too tired to think about the past I turned onto my left side and pulled my legs up to my chest. I tried to imagine Alistair sleeping with me, not Morrigan. At last, I slipped into sleep. *Author’s Note: These special abilities are something I thought of on my own. I suppose it is similar to “spider sense” (from Spider Man). Since not many effects of the taint are mentioned in the game, I came up with some that make “sensing” darkspawn more realistic. “Feeling” other Grey Wardens is (I think) not too far-fetched as they carry darkspawn blood in their veins.=While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
