As I finished arguing with a mage, mainly because ruffling a mage’s feathers is part of Templar training I liked, I saw a woman approach wearing leather armor and two swords sheathed on her back. One was definitely not made for her, the grooves in the hilt were made for a man of much larger hands. She wore a quiver of arrows on her side, hanging from her belt and carried a recurve bow of oak. She looks so small despite being armed to the teeth. Her brown hair was tied back behind her head, showing clearly the intricate tattoos that mirrored on both sides of her face. Now that is odd, usually human never did that, mostly found on the Dalish from what I have been told. I have never met one myself. To many I imagine she is rather intimidating, but I just saw how delicate and graceful she was. As the mage walked off in a huff, I said aloud, “Ahh the one good thing about the Blight is it can bring people together.” The woman walked up and replied, “I know exactly what you mean.” “Exactly it’s like a party, we can dance around and all hold hands.” “Are you Alistair perhaps?” “Yes, so you must be the recruit Duncan just brought back. I am sorry, he failed to mention your name to me, or maybe I just forgot. It’s never a good idea for me to play marbles, I am always losing them.” Why in the world did I just say that? Well the bad pun seemed to work on her, because she cracked a smile and our eyes met. Her eyes are so green, like the trees in an evergreen grove. “My name is Rose Cousland.” I went into a 2 second shock. I knew she lost her family, but I didn’t know the attacked Cousland estate was her family home. Duncan, great mentor but isn’t always one for background detail. “Well Rose, I must say, you just don’t see that many female Grey Wardens. I wonder why that is?” She gave an impish grin and replied, “Maybe we are too smart for you.” “Then what dear lady does that make you?” “Ahh, touché” she replied, still wearing a smile. “If you are ready, I will take you to Duncan so we can see what we need for the joining ceremony.” “What is the Joining Ceremony?” “It’s our ceremony to commit your life fully to the Grey Wardens, once done, you can never go back. I feel I need to ask, are you sure you want to do this?” Maybe it was my chivalrous side kicking in, but I didn’t want her joining rashly since Duncan helped her escape the attack in Highever. I wanted to tell her the risks so badly of the joining, how many died. I have never felt such a protective instinct for anyone. I can’t tell her any details of the joining but I can make sure this is her decision. She stood quietly looking at the ground for a second, looking up with eyes that wanted to tear up and said, “I have lost the life I had before. I want to start this new one with purpose and help Ferelden if I can.” I nodded and on instinct took her hand and gave it a squeeze. Maker, her hands are small and soft. It felt right to hold her hand, so it was a matter of will to let it go and take her to Duncan to prepare for the joining.
