”She has aquired the Pokemon as you requested.”
“Good.”
…
“But… Isn’t… Isn’t there someone else you could transfer this assignment to?”
“The girl is essential for this mission. It has to be her.”
“But why?”
“You are on a need to know basis only, professor.”

Professor Oak placed the phone back to its place. It was the crack of dawn. The Oak laboratory was empty save for professor Oak who sat in his seat watching out the only window in the laboratory. He sighed and watched as the rising sun chased the darkness away.
‘Please, forgive this old fool, Leaf.’
***
Leaf had had a night of deep, haunting dreams. When she woke up, she felt exhausted. She hadn’t been particularly tired the previous night, but those odd dreams had disturbed her sleep so that it felt like she had been awake for weeks. She couldn’t remember much about the dreams, just that they gave her the chills.
Leaf stirred, her eyes fluttered open and she took a peek over her blankets. The sun was up high, she had slept late.
The young trainer had spent her night at an old Cerulean inn. Since the professor had insisted covering her travel expenses, she had decided to stay indoors for a change. It was bit chilly for camping even though she hardly complained whenever she had to sleep outdoors.
Leaf peeled the warm blankets off her and stretched her stiff arms. She would have loved to get more shut-eye, but she had a delivery to make. She glanced next to her futon. There was a purple ball on the tatami. It sat there peacefully, but Leaf could have sworn that she had heard someone talking to her during the night.
She crawled next to the ball and poked it with her index finger. The ball rolled on its side. Nothing else happened.
‘It must have been my imagination.’

Leaf had grabbed some breakfast from the inn’s café and headed out. She was walking towards the edge of the Cerulean forest, or patch of trees, more or less. Her uneasy fingers fondled the purple ball on her pokeball belt. It felt cool to the touch.
She wiped trace of breadcrumbs from the corners of her mouth and unclasped the purple ball from the belt. The young trainer stared at the ball, frowning at it suspiciously. Her finger instinctively sought out the little button on the ball and pressed down. The ball expanded slightly.
Leaf wasn’t at all sure if she was supposed to do what she was about to. But there was that nagging feeling that wouldn’t leave her alone and her curiosity took the best of her.
The purple ball flew in an arch trough the air before bumping to the ground. The upper half popped open with a flash of pink. Leaf blinked.
There it stood. A few yards from her, the tall and muscular Mewtwo. It had its back turned at Leaf. The cat pokemon appeared to be sulking. Leaf tried to approach him but as soon as the thought of walking up to him had taken a shape in her mind the Mewtwo bolted.
It sprung on its powerful hind legs and was gone from her view in a heartbeat. Unfortunately for the Mewtwo, his attempted escape came to an abrupt end. Some kind of field of energy prevented him from getting too far from the pokeball. The ball shook violently and began pulling the runaway pokemon back to its proximity.
Leaf observed as the Mewtwo was desperately trying to hold on to bare branches to keep him from being sucked back to the pokeball. But even his immense physical strength was no match to the force of the pokeball. He was dragged back, claws buried to the soil in a last attempt to avoid his unembellished prison.
The human girl swiftly grabbed the purple offender and snapped it shut. The pull on Mewtwo’s body ceased, but both of them sensed that the presence of the energy field still lingered. The pokemon couldn’t escape. It turned its head at the trainer.
‘Cease this ridiculousness. Release me.’
Mewtwo’s deep amethyst colored eyes captured Leaf’s gaze.
A low, masculine voice rumbled in her head. Not so much sounding, but feeling stressed and furious. She could feel the scorch of his anger in the pit of her stomach. It took every ounce of her willpower to resist.
The girl shut her eyes close, trying not to get lost in the maze of whispers and shouts.
“No.” She firmly replied. “I apologize for the trouble this must cause you, but I’m on a mission. I have to get you to my friend. You’ll just have to bear with this for a while, okay. I’m—“
‘”Sorry?”’ The harsh voice cut to her words. He knew all her sentences even before she had finished forming them. He lurked in the corners of her thoughts and was a step ahead in all of her words and actions.
‘You don’t know what sorry means.’
Torrent of nightmarish images invaded the girl’s mind. Even with eyes shut tightly, Leaf could see. She saw a laboratory, glass tanks full of goo, people with long white coats, tubes, bubbles, pain, suffocation. Coldness and darkness.
He was trying to show her what he was running from. Leaf dropped to her knees and held her head.
“Stop it…” She weakly pleaded.
The pictures were mixing with sounds and feelings. She could hear the distant murmur of the scientists, feel needles and tubes piercing her body. Leaf tasted a vile tang of formaldehyde in her mouth, even though the taste was foreign to her.
“STOP IT!” She screamed.
The images faded and were replaced by darkness. Leaf took a shaky breath of relief and her eyes fluttered open.
The Mewtwo stared at her, not asking or expecting her sympathy or apologies. Just his freedom. But she couldn’t give him that. All she had to offer was her regret.
“I’m—“
‘Don’t bother.’ The pokemon refused her meaningless sorries and walked back to the forest. Knowing that escape was not in his reach but still he wanted to feel the breeze for a little while longer before being stuffed back into the capture device.
Leaf let him stay there for a while.

The wind was picking up. Leaf rubbed her arms for warmth. They should be getting on the road soon. The silhouette of the grand feline pokemon hadn’t moved in the shades of the trees. Leaf walked to him.
“We should go now.”
‘We should go now.’
That same hauntingly human voice echoed the trainer’s word in her head as she spoke them.
‘If you don’t mind, could you stop poking around my head?’ Leaf asked wordlessly.
The absence of his answer assured Leaf that he would not invade her mind anymore.
“He’s a good man, you know. The professor you are going to meet. I promise you that he will not do any of those… things I saw.”
Not in the mood of conversing, Leaf thought of his silent demeanor. She softly called him back to the pokeball. A bright flash of purple erupted from the ball and the big cat was gone.
The young trainer popped the peculiar master ball back to her utility belt and nimbly took out another ball.
“Ollie, come out.”
A big Noctowl stretched its wings as it emerged from the ball. Leaf gave close to it and gave it warm scratches on its head. The Noctowl cooed and closed its eyes with contentment.
“We should be heading back to the laboratory, old boy. Ready for a flight?”
“Already? But the fun was just about to start.” A voice snickered.
This time Leaf was sure that the sound was not coming from her head. Near from the shadows of the trees, two people came forward. A woman and a man, dressed in gray uniforms of the same fashion.
“Lunatone, come meet our new acquaintance.” The woman smiled ominously and released her pokeball.
A/N: In case you were wondering, here are the members of Leaf’s team:
Mr. Mime (Mimien, female)
Amphardos (Faro, male)
Noctowl (Ollie, male)
Mewtwo (Grummy, male)
Chicorita (Mercurio, male)
Lapras (Rosa, female)
I usually go for a really diversed team when I play myself. Usually electric Pokemon is the one that I must have at all times. They are so nifty.
