You turn your attention back towards the desk to find Vergil watching you again. His features held that same searching expression that they'd had earlier this morning. The intensity of his gaze made you rather uncomfortable.
"Stop that," you finally said, crossing your arms over your chest.
He arches a brow. "Stop what?"
"Staring. Didn't your mother ever tell you it was impolite to stare?"
"My mother wasn't exactly the typical mother, so no."
You tilt your head curiously, but he doesn't go on. Instead, he continues to study at you. You roll your eyes and make your way over to the couch. Gingerly, you sit on the edge of it and grab the remote control for the television. Flipping through the channels, it soon becomes evident that nothing worth watching is on. As if there was ever anything decent to watch on the idiot box.
"Is it true?" Vergil asks.
You toss a glance his way. "Is what true?"
"The fact that you've never seen a demon."
"'Fraid so, darling. Why? Is that unusual?" You stretch your arms and clasp your hands together behind your head.
Vergil's brow creases at the word 'darling' but he lets it go. "It's strange, yes. Both of your parents hunt them, do they not?"
You nod, wondering where he was going with this.
"So, one would think that you'd not only witness demons regularly, but also battle them. Did your parents teach you to fight, at least?"
"Nope. Didn't want me in the line of fire, I guess. Makes sense, if you ask me. Parents usually try to protect their children from such things."
He scoffs, "Ridiculous. Aren't you in the line of fire now? And without a leg to stand on. Your parents must be entirely foolish."
Glaring, you begin to defend your mother and father but the front door bursts open, cutting you off. Another white-haired individual strides in, shedding his jacket and tossing it to the floor. The man stops short when he sees Vergil sitting behind the desk.
"Verge! Hey bro!"
"Dante," Vergil gives him a slight nod.
Dante hears the television and glances over, catching sight of you. A slow grin spreads across his face. "And you must be Vergil's charge. Let me just say that your picture doesn't do you justice."
He looks you up and down and you feel your cheeks heat up. You glance down at your feet, allowing your hair to hide your features.
Dante was delighted, "You're SHY? Look at you, blushing from a little compliment. Heh, I wonder how you'd react if I were to-"
"If you're QUITE done," Vergil stands, appearing displeased, "I cannot linger here all day. I've other business to attend to."
"Yeah, yeah, in a sec, " Dante flops onto the couch next to you. "So babe, is my big bro treating you good? Or do I need to rescue ya?" He gives you a gentle nudge with his elbow and smiles.
Still red, you manage to return the grin and nod. "Yes. It's been fine. He's been quite the host." You were rather taken aback by how different the brothers' personalities were.
"Hah! No kidding. Hey Verge! She must really like you to cover for ya like that."
Vergil rubbed his temples in a gesture of frustrated fatigue. "You're an idiot."
Dante clutches his chest with both hands and turned back to you with a wounded expression, "There! You see? See how he is? Why're you so mean to everyone, Verge? All we want is your love." He wraps an arm around your shoulders and leans over to whisper, "Don't worry, if it gets too bad, you can come stay with me. I'll show ya a good time."
This was amusing, watching Dante give Big Bad Vergil a rough time. You smile and tuck a luck of hair behind your ears. "I'll have to remember that."
"You'll do no such thing. This is my contract." Vergil snaps his fingers at you and beckons. "Come along. Time to go."
Dante raises both brows, "What? You LIKE having her around, then? Already? Sheesh babe, what'd ya do? Cast a love-spell on 'im?"
"Enough." Vergil approaches and takes you by an arm, pulling you to your feet and out of Dante's reach. "It's time to go. I trust you've things under control then, Dante?"
The red twin nods, watching the two of you with an interested expression. "'Course, bro. Come on, this is ME, you're talking about."
"Precisely why I asked."
"Dick."
"Ignoramus."
Dante gets to his feet, a dangerous expression consuming his features. Vergil straightens slightly, eyes becoming even colder. You felt the shift in tension clearly and glance between the two of them, uncertain.
"You want some of this, bro?" Dante asks softly, holding both his arms out.
Vergil takes a step forward, placing himself between you and Dante. "Not especially. You're worthless. Whatever remains of you when I am finished, I will discard straight away."
Dante launches himself at his twin with a whoop of glee. Instantly, Vergil disappears only to reappear behind Dante a second later, katana drawn. You feel your stomach drop and you dive for cover. The battle that followed next defied explanation. The brothers face off, showering blows on one another faster than humanly possible. Sparks fly as their swords clash together with terrifying force. Cowering under a table, you were unable to look away. You gasp as Vergil drives a boot into Dante's stomach, sending the red twin crashing into the pool table, pulverizing it into an explosion of splinters. However, he bounces right back to his feet, seemingly uninjured. The grin on his face was frightening and not at all like the easy-going smile he'd had before.
You clenched your hands into fists and pressed them against your mouth, eyes wide and horrified. These two weren't human. They couldn't be.
"That's the third pool table I've had to buy, shithead," Dante snarls, "You showin' off for the lil' lady or somethin'?"
A startled shriek leaves your throat as Dante begins shooting at his brother. Vergil stands there, stoic, and twirls his sword so fast that it was only a half-seen blur. Lining up the bullets perfectly, he swipes the tip of the katana along the floor, sending them flying back at his twin.
Dante issues a yawn and shoots the bullets out of the air with ease, "Old trick, bro. OLD trick." He then catches sight of you, hunkered under a table with a terrified expression and blinks several times. "Uh-oh. Forgot all about you for a sec. You ok, babe?"
Vergil also appears rather startled and glances down at you. He straightens his clothing and swipes a hand back through his hair. "We'll have to finish this later, Dante. She'll be harmed and then I won't receive payment."
"Yeah, yeah. Excuses, excuses." He grins and reholsters his guns. "Sorry, babe." Dante shoots a sheepish smile in your directions and shrugs. "Anything broke?"
You crawl out from beneath the table and climb to your feet. Your legs feel like jell-o and you were shaking, but uninjured. "F-fine." You manage, wrapping your arms around yourself. "I'm fine." Your eyes ping-pong between the two of them uncertainly. "W-wh-what-"
Dante frowns and tilts his head. Vergil merely watches you with cool interest.
You shake your head, take a deep breath and try again. "What ARE you?"
"Aw, REALLY Verge? You didn't even tell her?" Dante appears annoyed and glowers at his twin.
"It is not a subject that comes up in a normal conversation, Dante. Regardless, it's a moot point. It doesn't matter whether she knows or not."
"You can be such an ass." Dante shakes his head in disgust and flips the overturned desk back onto its feet. He then, flops into the chair, swinging both booted feet up to rest on the desk. "And every time you come over, you destroy my shop."
"I don't see the difference between how it usually looks, really," Vergil replied, unconcerned.
You watch each in turn as they speak, mouth slightly ajar. "So sorry," you interrupt, voice slightly higher than usual. "But can someone PLEASE explain?"
"Oh, right. We're kinda, well, half-devils." Dante replied.
"... Half-devils." You repeat, staring blankly at him.
"Yeah."
You turn to glance at Vergil. He was still watching you, expression inscrutable. "Alright. Half-devils." You put a finger to your cheek and purse your lips thoughtfully. "What's a half-devil?"
"Half human, half devil." Dante replied, beginning to clean one of his guns. "Neat eh?"
"Sure. Neat." Your tone was bland and accepting. You still couldn't believe what'd just happened.
Dante frowns at you. "You sure you're ok? You look a little pale."
"... Oh, yeah! I'm great!" You flash a wide and totally unconvincing grin at him. In all actuality, you wanted to run away from these two. Far, far away. You were completely shocked that your father would leave you in the care of creatures that were close kin to those trying to kill you and your mother.
Vergil takes a step towards you, meaning to look you over, and you scramble back out of his reach. He and Dante exchange a glance.
"And that woman? Lady? Is she a-a devil too?"
Dante lets out a laugh, "Naw. Just a hellcat."
"So, uh, half-devils don't eat full-humans, right?" You begin to pull on a lock of hair fretfully.
The red twin winks at you, "I'd eat you. Like strawberry ice-cream." He licks his lips and tosses you a roguish smile.
Color rushes back into your cheeks and your breath catches.
"You're in no danger from us, if that's your concern." Vergil supplied, shooting Dante a disapproving glower. "Unless, of course, you were to attack one of us. Then we'd defend ourselves just as anyone else would."
Dante chuckles again, "Yeah. She really looks like she could dish out some damage, all right. Most I'D ever do if she attacked me is put her over my knee and give her a good spanking. Really Verge, you need to learn what to do with females."
For the first time, you see Vergil appear rather flustered. He pulled on the collar of his shirt and cleared his throat loudly. "And you need to learn to stay out of my personal business."
"Ooooh! Sounds like I hit a nerve," Dante shot back, sticking his tongue out at his older brother.
You stop yanking on your hair and you smile uncertainly, feeling a bit better. Frankly, if Vergil had wanted to harm you, he'd had plenty of opportunities to do so already. And he hadn't. Even as grumpy as he'd been with you, he hadn't laid a finger on you. Neither had Dante. In fact-
Vergil snapped his fingers in front of your face, interrupting your thoughts. "It's time to go."
"Oh! Right. Ok then. It was, ah, interesting meeting you, Dante." You nod in his direction and smile politely.
"Likewise, babe, likewise. And remember: just like strawberry ice-cream."
Your cheeks go even redder as Vergil issues an annoyed huff. You feel him lightly touch the small of your back, urging you towards the door. Somehow, in spite of everything you'd just seen, a part of you marvels at that gentle touch. Light as a feather.
