A/N: This is with the same character (Hank) as my other story Love In The Wastes. You don’t really need to read it to understand this one, but you can. And I don’t own Fallout just to be clear.
Rescue In The Wastes
Hank was headed back from Fort Constantine, he was asked to check it out by a group of guys with lots of caps. He found nothing good, no cache of weapons or advanced tech, there was a bunker type door in the basement of the CO’s quarters but it was opened, looted and picked over many times by the looks of it. “Let’s go TinCan” he said to the Sentry bot following him along.
“Affirmative” it replied in its monotone metallic voice. He had borrowed TinCan from Big Town on his way up to the Fort, he figured it would be useful to have backup. Ginn was in Megaton, serving as a guard, she was feeling bad about her time as a raider and was giving back so to speak.
He was headed east towards the SatCom Array when he heard sounds of a struggle. He dropped to his knee to hide, then realized TinCan was as visible as a nuclear explosion in the midday sun. Of course he was wearing his duster and shady hat which was a gift from Moira. He pulled up his Scoped .44 and used the sight to see what was going on at the abandoned tent he passed awhile back coming out to the fort. It was a little girl, no more than five or six, and three other men tying her up, he saw the bodies of a man and woman face down in pools of blood, “parents, and she’s either a toy or a slave.” Bad day to be those guys.
“Shall I engage?” TinCan rattled off as he locked on target.
“NO! You’ll cause a mess. I prefer to save her, not vaporize her.”
“Affirmative.” he replied standing down.
“But do me a favor, roll down there and get their attention.”
“Affirmative.” I hate your voice he thought to himself. He had left his Xuanlong at his home, it had broke on his last outing and he hadn’t had the parts to repair it, he pulled out a three shot sniper rifle he had “borrowed” from a passing drifter.
“They look like slavers to me” he mused “and apparently they are deaf because TinCan is almost there and they don’t seem to hear him.” He continued to himself.
“Halt” TinCan said when he was fifty feet from them.
“Shit! Sentry bot, run!” one yelled.
“BANG!” his head somersaulted off his shoulders.
“Sniper!” another yelled and ran for his live.
“BANG!” the shot rang out and into his back, he hit the ground. Hank scanned to area, the third one was missing. He must have ducked inside the tent. He ran down to the tent and called out “come out or I fire.”
“Don’t kill me.” He heard as a reply and a gun flow out the door.
“Thanks, alright I won’t kill you. He helped the little girl to her feet and led her a little away. He looked her over, she was covered in dirt but what wastelander wasn’t. Her hair was short and blonde, and her outfit was little more than rags. “TinCan shred the tent.” He said.
“Affirmative.” His Gatling Laser rang out until it stood no taller than dust.
He removed the little girl’s restraints, which surprised her. “I’m free?”
“Yeah you are but, where are you to go, and by yourself?” a look of fear passed over her face then quickly vanished when he finished.
“Mommy and Daddy are dead” she said as she started to cry not able to look at their bodies.
“You can come with me, I know a few places I could take you.”
“Metal man scares me.”
“Ah don’t mind TinCan he has a sparkling personality.” He examined the gun the slaver had tossed out, a simple hunting rifle; it might fetch a few caps.
They traveled pure south hoping to avoid the danger areas, Paradise Falls for one. “Can you handle a weapon?” he asked her, she merely shook her head. “That’s fine, with TinCan here we shouldn’t have any problems.” He told her. “TinCan take point.” You stay between me and him and you’ll be fine” he told the girl. He was wondering where he could leave the girl as they continued south. He could possibly leave her at Arefu. That one lady Karen Schenzy she was normal, but that would leave her close to Brailee Ewers, and she was nuttier than squirrel shit. That can’t be good for any child. Bigtown? No can’t leave her there, they were little more than kids themselves plus constant Super Mutant attacks, which I think they are exaggerating he thought. With that many robots and guns they can’t possibly be THAT big of a problem. He thought of Little Lamplight but that would mean she would eventually end up in Bigtown. There was no where between here and Megaton he could leave her and feel confident she would be safe.
They were approaching some wreaked cars southewest of Paradise Falls, when he got a funny feeling something was going to happen and not a good something. “Stay here girl, this might not be good.” He pulled the sniper rifle and sighted up the cars, he saw nothing for a while and was starting to relax when, but right before he lowered the gun he caught a gleam, sunlight reflecting off metal, and he hadn’t moved.
“TinCan Missile Launcher engage.”
“Affirmative.”
“Target cars…fire.” The missile streaked across the distance with the telltale smoke trail.
“BOOM” it connected with the cars and a mushroom cloud bloomed from the explosion.
“Anyone there is now truly fucked up.”
“No one was.”
“Wha-” he spun around quick but caught a gun butt to the side of his face before he could do anything else.
“Damn TinCan and his faulty proximity sensors” he thought as he came around.
Well he was tied up, and disarmed, but that was it. He was in a building with no idea where it was. He felt the cold steel of the blade he kept up his sleeve. I’m going to fuck them up. He thought again. He looked around quickly, the girl is she here? He asked himself. He didn’t see her. He couldn’t see more than what was in front of him, he didn’t want to move to give away his consciousness to the, whoever they were, possibly raiders.
He heard talking coming from behind him “check out this gun! Great condition.”
“Cool we can gun down meat easier this way.”
Raiders he thought. Easy targets, but they had his gun and were holding it, far easier to take him out.
“Did you get that computer off his wrist?”
“I couldn’t, it was stuck.”
“Dumbass, fine I’ll do it.” He heard the gun being set down. They are going to have to untie me to try and get it off, then he dies he continued his train of thought. He was grabbed roughly from behind and jerked into a sitting position. He felt the bounds loosen as he still feint unconsciousness, the bonds fell away completely. The knife was up his right sleeve and the Pip-boy on his left. His right dropped unconcerned to his side. He slowly twisted his wrist to allow the knife to slip into his hand. He felt the tip of the handle, it slipped down into his hand. Quick as a flash he twisted to his left and drove the knife into the raiders neck, ripped it out and just as fast flung it at the other raider that was too stunned to move.
“Fuckers, bring it.” He said.
“What the hell are you idiots doing up there, fucking? Trying to play poker down here damn it.” More downstairs, but how many he wondered. He grabbed his pack and pulled out three grenades, all he had, and one landmine. He placed the landmine at the entrance to the room but slightly inside so they couldn’t see it if they came running up the stairs.
He also tied all the grenades together and called down the stairs “hey fuckers, your damn friends are dead.” Silence then the scrapping of chairs and rushing of feet he pulled the pins and tossed them around the corner and retreated to the opposite corner with his gun pointed at the door.
“BOOM, BOOM, BOOM” He heard screams and yelling in pain, then silence aside from the continued moaning of one that didn’t die.
He grabbed a tin can that was laying on the floor, and called out “one more” as he tossed it to the door. Nothing. “Guess I got them all” he thought. He slowly went to the door but staying to the opposite side of the landmine, he peeked out, blood, guts, bodies in pieces. No one alive here. He quickly disarmed the landmine and replaced it in his pack. He checked the bodies of the two that didn’t get blown away. A knife, his knife, and a lead pipe. “Losers. No damn weapons worth anything. I’m taking them just so you learn.” He told the two corpses. He wiped his knife off and replaced in up his sleeve. He pulled the Scoped .44 out of his pack. It’s better in close quarters. He thought. He crept down the stairs slowly angling himself towards the open area at the bottom. He saw one of the raiders crawling away, no legs he noticed, he won’t last long. “Hey scum.” He stopped crawling instantly and looked over his shoulder. He saw their mark, now fully armed and rightly pissed off. Fear filled his face. “Did you happen to catch a little girl?”
The fear was replaced with confusion. “No? Was there one?”
“No.” he said.
“BANG” “Damn scum.”
He opened the door to the building they were hiding in. He immediately recognized the place. Northwest Seneca Station. He could see Arefu from here. So they hadn’t gone to far from where they ambushed him. He had to head back. He ran most of the way there. No one or thing challenged him on his way back. As he approached he saw TinCan standing there offline. One of those raiders must’ve had a good deal of knowledge to deactivate him that quickly. He was going to call to the girl then realized he didn’t know her name. He walked over to TinCan and inspected him. He reconnected a few wires in the back and replaced the capacitor in his back, he sprang back to life.
“TinCan active, awaiting orders.”
“Stand there” he told him. “Little girl are you here? Sorry about that didn’t see it coming.” She crawled out from under a shrub that was just big enough to hide her.
“You went way and he didn’t answer me.” she said holding back tears and pointing to TinCan.
“Yeah sorry but my friend here had a talk with them and they let me go.” he said waving his .44. “What’s your name?” he continued.
“Sally” she replied.
“Well Sally I’m taking you with me, I can’t think of a safe place to leave you and I live in a safer place than anywhere out here.”
“Really?”
“Yes, but we have to go, I hate traveling at night, and it is fast approaching.
“Hey Alan.” he called on his way up to Arefu
“Hank” he called back.
“Need a place for the night, got one?” He knew the answer but ask anyway.
“Yeah talk to Evan he can arrange it.” Evan was renting out the West’s house to travelers, Ian had decided to return to Vance after his return to Arefu so he gave the house to Evan to do with as he wished. Hank paid the five caps and they stayed the night.
They woke up early and gathered their things, what little they had, TinCan had stayed up at the entrance with Alan during the night. Hank opened the door and stepped into the glow of the low sun. Perfect time to travel. Karen stepped out of her house shortly before he walked by with Sally close behind him.
“Hello Hank how are you?”
“I’m good, you?”
“So am I- who is that?” she asked just noticing Sally.
“This is Sally I saved her from Slavers, her parents were killed she has no place to go. So she’s coming with me.”
“I see, building yourself a little family aren’t you?” Karen asked jokingly.
“I guess you can say that.” He replied. “I need to be going, see ya later.”
“Later.” she replied.
He rounded the corner and almost ran into Brailee “ah shit” he thought.
“Hello dearie, nice day isn’t it? Isn’t the smell of fresh cut grass nice?”
“Yeah it is” Sally wore a look of shock, confusion and slight fear.
“Oh Hello dearie” she repeated as she saw Sally, who now cowered behind Hank.
“Here have a cookie.” she said as she handed both of them a tin can.
“Thanks, got to go see you later.” He said and hurried off. Since the sun was up Alan was back in his hut and Evan was manning the entrance. “See you later Evan, TinCan lets go.”
Aside from a slight delay from a couple of raiders at Fordham Flash Memorial Field which TinCan cut to pieces they arrived at Big Town quickly. “Hey Dusty, I’m here to return TinCan.”
“TinCan activate defense program 4632-95.” Dusty called out.
“Affirmative.” TinCan replied and rolled away.
“Not so much as a good bye.” Hank joked. “Is Red here?”
“Sure in her house.” House, one of the few settlements that actually had houses instead of shacks made of steel panels and or rotting wood. Dusty saw Sally but did not inquire. Hank walked in to Red’s Clinic and called to her.
“Hey Red you here?”
“Now there is a familiar voice.” he heard from the kitchen. “What do you need?” she asked before she actually came in to the room.
“I need you to look her over.” he said.
“Ginn you mean, is she hurt?” she asked concerned.
“Who’s Ginn?” Sally asked.
“You’ll meet her in Megaton.” Red was around the corner seconds later.
“Who is this?” Red asked hearing the new voice.
“It’s Sally.” he said as he explained her predicament again.
“She’s in perfect health.” Red told Hank after she checked over Sally. He raised an eyebrow in surprise at the comment. “Well as perfect as one can be in the wastes.”
“Great.” he said tossing her a small bag of caps. “Your moneys no good here, you get free treatment remember?”
“She’s not me” he replied. “Take the money you might need it.”
“Fair enough, thanks.” He greeted several of the other residents as he left.
“Nothing left now but to get home.” He told Sally.
“I can’t wait.” She replied. The trek to Megaton was long and uneventful, they finally reached the gates and were greeted by Deputy Weld and his programmed comments.
“Welcome to Megaton. Friendliest town around.” He led her over the big pipe to the walkway that led to his house.
Ginn was relaxing in one of the pre-war chairs that decorated their home.
“Hank your home.” she said as he walked in the door. She ran up and wrapped her arms around him planting a kiss on his lips at the same time.
“You don’t have to sound so surprised about it, I don’t always almost get killed.”
“Really?”
“Yes really.” I won’t tell her about the raiders he thought. “This is Sally” he gestured to the little girl.
“Hello Sally how are you?”
“Good, are you Ginn?”
“Yes I am, how did you know?”
“the red woman said.”
“The red woman?”
“She means Red in BigTown I had to stop by and drop off something. I had Red look her over, you know how Church is, don’t bother him unless you’re dying and even then he’s still an ass.”
“True.”
“I was going to set her up in the small room and introduce her to the other kids tomorrow.”
“Oh no that means we have to let Wadsworth out of his cell.” Ginn realized.
“Yeah I know.”
“My own room and other kids?” Sally asked in astonishment.
“Yep.”
“I think I’m going to like it here.” Sally said. He showed her to her room. He opened the door.
“Good Evening sir, what can I do for you?”
“Nothing at the moment Wadsworth thank you.”
“Very good sir.” “There is a couch in there but we can look for a bed tomorrow.” He told her but she laid down and was asleep in seconds.
He returned to the where Ginn was and she said “building ourselves a nice little family aren’t we?” Not realizing she mimicked Karen from Arefu statement almost exactly. Hank just smiled.
