Chapter 2
2 years later**“RUN!!! GO FAST, THEY ARE COMING!” Screams and smoke filled the air as townspeople scattered in panic and guards ran in and out of the Mage and Cathedral Districts of Stormwind. The city was under attack, the horde having brought several large raid groups in to swarm the city from different directions. Warlocks were commanding massive demons to destroy shops and homes, mages conjuring elementals to disrupt and intercept would be defenders. The panic of Stormwinds' citizens permeated the air like a thick cloud of dread as men, women and even children fell to the blades of rogues daggers and warriors swords.
Commander Stormfury lead the defensive line that held strong at the gates of the Keep while members of his family, Battalion leaders of their own rights, tried their best to hold the horde from infiltrating the rest of the city, while also trying to lead citizens to safety.
Some of the townspeople stood their ground and fought bravely alongside the military, fighting for their shops, their homes...their lives. Joseph had grabbed his sword the second he heard the first thunder claps of warriors fighting in the streets, with Anne running out behind him, paladin's hammer at the ready. They fought together alongside of her cousins Lunamaya and Thassarian. Thassarian dropped DnD along the ground to aoe those horde around him while Luna frost nova'd those that tried to escape the confines of the defensive line Remiell Shadowhelm, Kaetarian's second in command, had set up outside the mage district.
Thassarian was the first death knight to have rejoined the alliance and had been accepted right back into his family as though little had changed. They all fought long and hard and finally, the horde seemed to be losing the battle. As Luna and Thass were chasing the last of the stragglers to the funnel that Remiell had set up in the tunnel between the Mage district and the Canals, Joseph turned to look for Anne who he'd lost sight of during the battle. As the smoke cleared, she came into view and Joseph was stricken with an image that would haunt him for years.
Anne stood 30 feet or so behind him and was wiping her brow with the back of her sleeve, having rested the handle of her paladin's hammer on her leg. As her eyes locked with his and a smile spread across her face at the knowledge that he was safe, her body then convulsed in the most grotesque manner. Confused for a moment, Joseph's eyes trailed down to her stomach and saw her fingers touch the bloody tip of a dagger sticking out of her. Looking up in horror, he saw an undead rogue grinning at him from behind her. Anne had been ambushed.
“NOOOOOOO!”, Joseph screamed out, his blood pounding in his ears as he charged the rogue, who promptly vanished. Running as fast as he could, he locked eyes with Anne, seeing her's glaze over as her hand reached out in his direction, her body crumpling to the ground. Screaming in anguish, Joseph dove for her, scooping her bleeding body onto his lap, holding her close. “ AUGHHHHHHH!”, he yelled, his body convulsing in unspent tears. Picking her up, he held her close to his chest, his own body shaking with rage as he carried his life long love, his beloved wife of only 3 years. Walking through the clearing smoke of the fires the horde had set, he made his way out of the mage district, through the canals and headed into the Cathedral district where the last of the horde were being dispensed with.Luna saw him walk silently past her almost as if in a trance and she yelled out for him but he neither heard or saw her. He saw nothing but the haunting look in his young brides eyes as hers had locked with his before the light that she'd loved had abandoned her. His feet lead him to the catacombs of the Cathedral where the fallen were being taken but when he got there, he found that he couldn't let her go. Her body, still warm, was sticky with blood in his arms, but he just couldn't put her down. This was his love...he'd never loved another...he'd had to beg her father for her hand in marriage and then when her father refused, they ran away and eloped...he'd worked day and night to give her the best, to be what he thought she deserved and now....now....
One week after her funeral, Joseph took some time off. Well, more like Kaetarian forced him to leave the counting house. Not wanting to go back to their boarded up apartment in the Mage District, he went to their little one room house by the river in Elwynn. It was there in the privacy of the little house, full of memories of those first days of their marriage...first times making love, first meals, first times hosting as a couple...it was there that he lost himself in his grief.Unbearable pain washed over him, wave after gut wrenching wave. Joseph cried out in anguish to empty walls. He wailed into thin air. He gave into the rage he carried in his heart and weeks later, when he emerged from the house, he wasn't the same broken man who'd lost his wife. The man that emerged had lost everything and had give up and replaced the heart in his chest with bitter, cold indifference.
