Part 2
The solution came to him during class. It was so simple – all he had to do was find someone to have sex with! In other words, a boyfriend. Well, it seemed simple at first, but after realistically assessing his own strengths, Kenji was not so sure anymore. To put it simply, he was unpopular.
Firstly, his circle of friends consisted of Uriko and maybe that girl (Yumi was her name?) who often borrowed his notes. It was not as if he were shy or anything, he just didn't have any interest in people. Kenji would describe his way of talking as "curt and effective", but he knew from observation that this was not adequate for cultivating any sort of lasting social interaction – which he had never needed anyway. Even when people approached him (and they tried every year), there were just no common grounds to keep up any sort of conversation. Until six months ago, he didn't even know his past; and, now that he knew, it was not as if he could talk about it anyway. Being a killer definitely wouldn't earn him points with society at large.
Sure, he was the ace of the soccer team, but he had joined the club only to keep himself in shape, and his teammates often complained that he was too independent and didn't coordinate well with the team. Were it not for Shougo, their captain – who advocated that "a win is a win" – Kenji would probably have been kicked out already.
Secondly, there was also the matter of how people viewed same-gender relationships. A couple of years back, Kenji had witnessed a boy being bullied for his sexual orientation until he finally switched schools. At the time, Kenji had remained a bystander (he was about as empathic as a robot back then), but maybe he should have tried to help the other boy. It's probably what Yugo would have told him to do if he had asked. Yugo hated injustice more than anything. The chance of the same happening to Kenji was slim, since he had already established his dominance by physically subduing everyone who had tried to harass him, but still it was best to avoid becoming a target for irrational hatred.
And thirdly, Kenji realized he didn't know how to tell if someone was gay. If he started trying at random, he would definitely blunder. Come think of it, he didn't even know how to hit on people, besides what he had seen on TV, and he knew this was not a trustworthy source of information.
Therefore, Kenji concluded that the first thing he needed was information. For the next week, he carefully observed how his classmates interacted with each other, taking mental notes of common conversation topics, facial expressions, hobbies and whatnot. When he reached home, he would spend hours in front of the mirror practicing and rehearsing. He had seen his master, the former Bakuryu, doing that on occasion. He'd called it "blending in" and explained the basics, but it was one of those things Kenji had never had to actually use. The boy figured now was as good a time as any to pick it up. Besides, this gave him renewed focus and a much-needed distraction from his own urges.
After a week of self-training, Kenji still wasn't sure it would work out smoothly, so he decided to try it on one person at a time. The first one was Uriko, but she merely commented that he seemed unusually happy and asked if something good had happened. Uriko was one of the few people around whom Kenji had allowed his emotions to show, so her reactions were not a reliable indicator. Still, it seemed he had achieved the desired result. He would have liked to chat a bit more to test if she could see through his mask, but they only managed to exchange a few words before the bell rang, and then they had to go to their respective classrooms. However, Kenji had already lined up his next target.
"Morning, Yumi-san," Kenji greeted warmly.
"M...morning, Ohgami-kun," the girl answered a little unsure. It was unusual for Kenji to approach her, usually it was her asking him for his textbook. Besides, he had used her first name, which indicated a level of intimacy they didn't share. In fact, they were almost complete strangers.
Kenji seemed unconcerned by her apparent discomfort and continued: "Say, are you free after class? There's something I'd like your help with."
By then, the whole class was looking at them. Firstly, they only heard Kenji's voice when he was asked by one of the teachers to read a page. Secondly, they had never seen him speak so... nonchalantly. Thirdly, Yumi was blushing fiercely. Kenji had expected that reaction to some degree.
Yumi didn't trust her voice, so she merely nodded.
"Great! I'll meet you later, thanks!" Kenji answered cheerfully. Now people were definitely staring. Since when did Ohgami-kun do 'cheerful'?
Before class was over, he sneaked a note into her desk telling her to meet him at one of the benches behind the cafeteria. It was a place few people crossed at that time of the day. Not as inconspicuous as Kenji would have liked, but he couldn't suggest a place Yumi would have reservations about. As predicted, she showed up a few minutes after class. Kenji noticed some classmates predictably spying on them from a distance, but, unless they were zoanthropes, they wouldn't be able to overhear their conversation.
"Hey Yumi-san, thanks for coming," Kenji said, inviting her to sit beside him. She did, but kept some distance.
"No problem, Ohgami-kun. So, what can I help you with?" Kenji couldn't help but notice she had recomposed herself. She probably felt safe under her friends' watchful gaze.
"Well, I've noticed you have some interesting magazines..." Kenji trailed off, and Yumi blushed fiercely.
"Wh...what are you talking about?" She asked somewhat embarrassed.
"You know, those magazines about... same-sex relationships," he said with a smile.
He's going to blackmail me, she thought, and the color quickly drained from her face. Kenji noticed this, but couldn't tell if something had gone wrong or if she had just regained her composure. The silence stretched with her avoiding his eyes, and he knew he had to continue the conversation. Therefore, he decided to go on with the original plan.
"Well, you know," he made a pause as he scratched behind his head, "I was wondering if you could lend me some. I'm always lending you my notes, so I figured it would be only fair..."
Yumi suddenly turned to face him. "Wait, do you by any chance...?"
Kenji's mind rushed. Is she inquiring about my sexual preference? Does she expect me to just expose myself like that? If I didn't like it, why would I be asking for that kind of magazine? He decided to give what he considered the least compromising answer.
"Yeah, sure," he said nonchalantly.
Suddenly, Yumi's eyes lit up with some strange feeling Kenji couldn't even hope to recognize. This is dangerous, he thought instinctively, but before he could say anything, she grabbed his hand and rewarded him with an enthusiastic smile.
"I'm sure we'll be very good friends!" Yumi said.
