Chrom once again found himself marveling at what he had been missing out on his whole life; Ylissean nobility jewelry was definitely the cream of the jeweled crop but these pieces were no slouches in the beauty department either. There were so many different designs to choose from; extravagant, simplistic, and everything in between, none of them failed to capture the prince's awe. The thought of how much any of it was priced didn't fail to deflate him a little, but it also didn't stop him from wanting something out of the visit.
"And here I thought that there were no more surprises left for me," Chrom chuckled to himself. "Now let's see here…what would go good with my suit?" Silver-wear came to his mind immediately; he personally never saw the appeal of gold jewelry so much and instead preferred their silver brethren that blended in with his favorite colors. Some words of wisdom from Lissa came back to him; keeping her advice in mind he picked out a single pocket watch and a pair of eyeglasses (not that he needed any), concluding that the two items would be his only purchase here. "Well, that was easier than I thought. I wonder what Lissa's up to; she's probably eyeing up all the gold and diamonds in here." The store wasn't too large so it would be easy to find her; then again the last store they went to wasn't remotely large either. And quick to locate his sister he was, finding her leaning on the cashier's counter and chatting with a redheaded young woman.
"Oh. My. Gods…" the blonde teen whispered. "They are just beautiful!" The clerk beamed in pride at the princess' squealing at her craftsmanship.
"I carry only the finest!" she playfully replied. "And although it did take quite some "negotiation" with you to set a manageable price, it looks like we have a keeper."
"Ooh yes, this is definitely a treat! He's gonna love these babies so much!"
'"He"?' Chrom thought to himself. 'Since when did Lissa plan on buying something for a man? Or a boy, whatever they are.'
"So, who's the lucky guy?" the merchant inquired. "Is he a dashing young man with meat grinding muscles?"
"He's the wonderful man that came in with me," the princess replied. "He's sweet, brave, strong, and handsome too. He's always looking out for me like he's a…big brother of sorts."
'I am her big brother,' Chrom noted. He let the girls continue on with their conversation before he came to conclusions.
"So, does he know that you're buying this for him?" the clerk asked. "Usually it's the guys who go out and buy this kind of stuff."
"Nope!" Lissa said. "I'm not the type of girl to sit and wait for a guy to come along and drop the bomb on me, though I do hope to get something from him soon. This whole thing's a secret to him, and I want to really surprise him tonight when everything else is said and done."
"Oh la la," the clerk cooed. "In that case, I happen to carry around a brochure for a special hotel that you might like." The clerk reached beneath the counter and pulled out a paper that held a castle-like hotel on the front with the words "Renais Inn" above it with the tagline "Wholesome Fun for the Whole Family!" beneath it. "You'll like this place, trust me."
"I'll take your word for it," Lissa said. "Now, these will be my purchases for today." She pulled up two golden necklaces with a pair of hoop earrings, causing the clerk to raise an eyebrow at the assortment of jewelry before her.
"Kid, are you sure that you have enough money for this?" she asked. "All of this'll cost you at least two-thousand gold, and that's without taxes. And I just slashed the price on that surprise gift there too."
'Two-thousand?' Chrom incredulously asked himself. 'I know that jewelry is expensive but even that much gold is ridiculous.' Lissa however didn't seemed to be fazed one bit.
"Oh I'm sure that I have enough for this," Lissa stated confidently. "So, what's the total for all of this?"
"It's two-thousand-one-hundred-and-eighty-gold," the store owner plainly told clerk watched as the girl in front of the counter started pulling out coin after coin after coin. 'That's eighty gold already,' she thought as the eighth ten gold coin clinked onto the counter. The next sight surprised her; a single one-hundred gold coin and two one-thousand gold coins we're plucked out of the girl's purse and were promptly placed next to their lesser cousins.
"That's the exact change miss," Lissa announced, a smirk growing on her face as she saw the clerk's stunned face. "I'm sorry, did I pull up the wrong amount of gold?"
"N-no, you didn't," she stammered. "Where'd you get all of this gold? Most of my customers barely go a hundred over a thousand.
"That's my little secret," Lissa playfully remarked, keeping it a secret that she actually had more gold on her than what she told Chrom. 'Thank you so much Emm for the extra money! I'm super sorry that I had to fib a little about why I needed this much, but…I have to make sure that Chrom has the best day of his life.' The wide eyed store owner took the gold off of the counter and absentmindedly placed it all into her gold box, not taking her eyes off of the demure girl who had a lot more money than what she expected. Lissa in turn took all of the jewelry off of the counter and tossed them all into her shopping bag and with a smile gave the stupefied woman a "thank you" before heading off to find her brother. She found him standing not too far away appearing as if he was looking through the wares. She got his attention by placing a hand on his shoulder.
"Heya Chrom!" she announced. "I'm finished with want I want from here. You still figuring out what you like?"
"No, not at all," he said, feigning ignorance at her earlier conversation. "I'm actually finished here as well. I was simply waiting for you to wrap it up" He walked up to the merchant and placed his glasses and watch down, and she picked up her cheery tone as she read to him his total.
"That'll be one-thousand-and-ninety gold please," she said. He wordlessly pulled out his own wallet and picked out the exact change. Her surprise wasn't as pronounced as before but it was still surprising to see how easily he had the money for his purchase much like his little female friend. She counted them of course and put them into her gold box like with the last coins, and when she looked up she could see him already leaving with his stuff. "Um, thank you for your patronage!" she yelled after him and got a wave in response. "Er, come back soon!" Once they left her store she sighed to herself, resting her head on her propped arm. "Kids these days; that girl must be filthy rich or something, and she looks real young. And that man she came in with, he's a lot older looking than I thought he would be when I actually saw him, like he's way too old for her, but oh well…"
Outside of the shop Lissa began admiring her little gold pieces like a kid would with candy while Chrom stared at her. What exactly Lissa meant when she spoke of him back at the jeweler's confused him; he knew that she already thought well of him, but she spoke as if he was her dreamy knight in shining armor. Either way he now knew that Lissa had a surprise gift for him. His thoughts were interrupted when his sister lightly nudged his shoulder.
"So hey, Chrom," she started to say, "is there anything else that you may want to buy?"
"No," he quickly answered. "I believe that I already have everything that I want from this market district. Why'd you ask?"
"Oh, no particular reason," Lissa told him. "I just have one last stop to make before we head to that club that I mentioned." They kept walking in the town streets until they came upon a noticeable establishment; it was a building that was splashed with an array of red and pink hues all over and the sign had large red writing that read out "Lingerie Land". Chrom cocked a single eyebrow in curiosity while Lissa herself looked on in excitement.
"What the devil?" Chrom questioned. "Who in their right mind would build an establishment as blatantly obscene as this…?" He could scarcely believe it; if the owner had any sense of decency they would relocate all of its wares to another appropriate store.
"Aw, who cares?" Lissa said. "Besides, I'm not really complaining; I wanted to pick up some…nighties anyways. You think you can handle standing out here for a few?"
"…Run that past me again?" Chrom asked Lissa. "I could have sworn that I misheard you."
"I'm going inside to buy some lingerie real quick," Lissa repeated. "Are you okay with waiting outside here for a few minutes or two?"
"No," Chrom sharply answered. "No to me waiting out here and no to you entering that establishment."
"What!?" Lissa shouted. "Oh come on Chrom, why not!?"
"What…what exactly are you going to purchase from there?" Chrom questioned the princess.
"What else is there to purchase?" Lissa sarcastically replied. "You seem like a smart guy; you figure it out."
"Sexy teddies for this male friend of yours?" Chrom answered, trying his best to keep a lid on his temper.
"Exactly!" Lissa's cheerful mood was not helping matters, and she could see Chrom ready to blow. Knowing how Chrom could get when angry so she tried her best to emulate how Emmeryn would handle these kinds of situations. "*Ahem* Chrom, calm down and listen to what I have to say before your temper gets the best of you. We both know what happens when you start going Hector-mode on us." The prince wasn't too full of steam coming out of his ears so he heeded his younger sister's request, though he felt that he wouldn't like this next talk. "Thank you. Now, you know that I am old enough to make my own decisions like whether or not I want to fight in your army, assist Emm and the other clergy, or—more to the point—go after a guy that I like. It's not like I haven't put any thought into this Chrom. If I want to go to a store and buy some undies to spice up my intimate night with the man of my dreams then that's my business. I respect you for looking out for me but I'm not a young child anymore; I still have some more growing up to do but I'm grown enough. You may not believe me when I say that but that's the truth."
"Then what about back at the jeweler's?" Chrom asked. "That was a lot of gold that you've spent for that surprise gift and the other stuff you got, around a fourth of what Emm gave you to spend for today."
"Oh please spare me that lecture Chrom," Lissa rolled her eyes. "I am pretty much aware of how much gold I have left to spend. Lingerie shouldn't cost anywhere near a hundred gold to purchase, and while the club that we're going to attend soon is pricy Maribelle informed me that it is the cheapest high-end club in Ylisse. It's very much affordable for us."
"Okay then," Chrom sighed, "but what about that paper that the clerk back there handed to you?"
"Oh this?" Lissa said. "It's a brochure for a hotel that we can try out! It looks real nice too. I hope that this picture isn't fudged or anything like that."
"Lissa please—" Chrom was about to start until Lissa cut him off.
"Nuh-uh, you agreed to spend the whole day with me doing whatever I asked you to do as long as it was within reason to make up for the Risen nest stint that you pulled. You haven't already forgotten how mad I was at you for doing something like that or how horrified I was when I saw my big brother bleeding to death in his room alone?"
"But—"
"Let. Me. Finish. Okay?" Lissa ordered, shutting Chrom up immediately. The man was definitely something to deal with at times; Lissa sighed deeply at this fact and remembered to keep her cool. "Thank you. Just…trust me on this one, okay? You said that you trust me more than anyone else right? Let me show you that I can be a responsible princess. It's not as if I'm going to blow all of my gold in one day just because I want to experience the good life outside of the palace. If anything, we know that we both deserve a break from the fighting. Consider this my way of showing you how much I appreciate everything you do for us, and for me, alright?" Chrom wanted to ask why she was buying lingerie when he had no reason to ever need one but he decided against it.
"Alright then. Today's the day you call the shots then." Chrom said conceding.
"Thanks Chrom," Lissa smiled at him for agreeing to let her go through with this. "That's all I'm really asking for; just today at the very least. Just to treat you to a fun day to spend with me. The lingerie is for later when my…you know…but let me buy that and I'll forget about everything else that has nothing to do with us for the whole day. Sounds nice?"
"Sure. So, do I have to…?" Lissa's face was just as unsure as his own.
"I'm not entirely sure if men are allowed inside, even if you're the prince," Lissa said looking at the store. "Just to be on the safe side you might want to stay out here yeah?"
"If you say so," Chrom said. With those brief parting words Chrom took a seat at a nearby café and waved Lissa a temporary goodbye, with the girl coming up to him and giving her brother another hug and his second kiss for the day. And off to the store she went, leaving behind a stunned Chrom as he rubbed the side of his face. Chrom wondered what had possessed Lissa to start kissing him again as of recent, let alone give him a big smooch on the cheek. He had to admit that whatever the reason was it was cute for sure, smiling with the belief that Lissa was warming up to him like how she used to be when she was little. Up beside him sat a trickster lad who had eyed the pair with interest, and the man scooted further to the prince.
"She sure is quite the fetching young thing isn't she?" the man said to Chrom, snapping the prince out of his thoughts as he turned to the voice. It was a smirking man who looked to be older than him and attractive to boot, but he just rubbed the royal off the wrong way by opting to compliment his sister's looks.
"And? What is so important that you felt the need to announce this to me?" Chrom asked with a hint of annoyance in his voice.
"Oh no, I'm not that terribly interested in pursuing her if that's what you seem to believe," the stranger said. "I have my own enclave of ladies to attend to and they would become very envious should I decide to add the lovely lass, and I would rather not whisk away another man's lady." Chrom couldn't help but feel an eye of his twitch; this man was clearly a player and had all the wrong ideas about him and Lissa. "Do you not consider yourself a lucky man to have such a charming and youthful female companion?"
"Excuse me?" Chrom bit out.
"Why, I would imagine that she would make you such a happy man," the man kept rambling, reminding Chrom a bit too much of Virion, except that this man was much more obnoxious. "What a proud man you would be to honor her by wedding her,"
"She already has made me a happy man," Chrom told him. "I and our older sister are proud of her."
"Yes, I—wait, what?" the man asked in confusion. "She is your—"
"Younger sister," Chrom clarified. "I get the strange feeling that you must believe that we are romantically involved, but that is not the case. Our relationship is entirely wholesome."
"Well, it certainly didn't appear as such," the man responded. "Unless my eyes deceive me, I swore that I saw her adoring you with the love-struck variety—"
"Seriously, can you just stop talking!?" Chrom finally snapped. "I just told you that there is nothing between us aside of the love that siblings share between each other! And even if my sister did harbor any feelings towards me I would have known about it by now."
"I don't mean any disrespect sir," the other man said holding his hands up in defense. "I'm simply telling you what my eyes beheld. I have experience with reading the body languages of men or women who hold romantic affections for another and—"
"Well maybe you should consider getting your eyes fixed," Chrom spat out at the man, who now felt very offended at the prince calling his own expertise in question.
"Really now?" the man shot back. "Tell me then; what knowledge of the matters of the heart do you so happen to possess then? I'm assuming that you don't have any if you are so quick to—" he didn't get to finish his rant as a sword was heard being drawn and he was met with a golden-blade pointed directly at his throat.
"I swear to the Gods," Chrom snarled, "if you do not cease with this conversation and leave me be I will have you arrested for harassment."
"And I am just as likely to have you placed under arrest for brandishing a weapon at me," the threatened man retorted, "especially since this is not a case of self-defense on your part. I, on the other hand…" The other man had drawn a levin sword and held it before him; the two men stood glaring at each other ready to throw down having ignored the crowd that had gathered around them.
Lissa meanwhile was trotting through the store rummaging through the different wear, occasionally asking herself if this store really was a good idea for lingerie.
"Bleaugh, almost all of these just scream 'Total Strumpet'," Lissa stated with disgust, "I may as well be wearing my birthday suit with some of this crud. And just about everything else is so bland that you're better off sleeping in onesies for eight year olds…there's just gotta be something in here that's just doesn't plain suck." Digging through the different outfits she didn't find any white and gold designs that weren't so horribly transparent or – even worse than that – didn't even bother covering her intimates. Lissa believed that whoever came up with these designs clearly had some out-there tastes, and an anger vein showed itself when Lissa remembered that she was in the "most-popular choices" section.
'Some people these days…geez…' the princess thought in annoyance. Towards the back of the store was lingerie deemed too unpopular with the general consumer base, and that's when she found some normal wear. And already she found several designs that appealed to her, wondering why weren't they up in the front of the store. "Oh well, just because something's popular doesn't mean that it's always gonna be good quality," Lissa said to herself grinning. The princess was aiming for a feel that captured the innocent-naughty look at the same time and held an overall cute and regal aura, which the majority of the lingerie she was looking at had done just fine. Her eyes had finally set upon the one set that she knew she would purchase. Her grin widened further as she plucked the article from its rack and happily skipped towards the cashier. Placing the article of clothing on the counter she reached into her robe for her purse, and turning her view to the one-way window made her drop her belongings in sheer shock.
She saw her elder brother Chrom and a male trickster with their weapons drawn and circling each other amidst a crowd who was either watching in excitement or aversion. Both men were very much ready to clash with each other, and in a blind hurry Lissa dropped what she was doing to stop the fight from actually happening.
'Oh good Naga, what happened this time?' Lissa thought in a panic when she made it outside.
"You disparage my judgment you callow youth," the older man growled. "I refuse to have my own abilities second-guessed by a green lad who dares to bring a weapon against me."
"And I'm not going to have some Virion-wannabe tell me what my sister thinks about me," Chrom responded. "You can either back out now or face my blade…"
"I will not back down from a challenge," the trickster said, "so do your worst."
"Big mistake," Chrom warned. As soon as his sword was raised her could hear someone excusing themselves through the crowd they had gained.
"Excuse me! Pardon Me! Comin' through!" the voice yelled. The two competitors turned and saw Lissa push her way through to the front.
"Lissa!" Chrom exclaimed at seeing his sister. "You…you pick out something that you like?"
"Oh yeah, totally," Lissa said, not diverted from the inevitable subject she would bring up. "So, what's going on here? You two competing for a pretty lady or something? Or did one of you get the other one mad?"
"This—this man!" the trickster began shouting while pointing at Chrom in a fury. "He dares to insult my fine craft of analyzing the language of love and romance as if he knows a greater depth than me!"
"Really?" Lissa asked incredulously. "That's it?"
"Wait until you hear my part of the story first Lissa," Chrom told her. "He literally comes up from nowhere and starts blabbering about how I'm so lucky to have someone like you."
"Well duh," Lissa snarked. "I mean, what would you do without me?"
"That's not all," Chrom said, "he started rambling about how much of a good couple we would be should we marry each other, and I had told him that we are kin."
"…And…what happened next?" Lissa asked after a noticeable pause, getting a sinking feeling that she knew where this was headed.
"He seemed convinced that you held certain feelings towards me, insisting that you were acting out of some romantic desires. I brushed that off of course and he said that he knew otherwise. How can a stranger claim to know my own sister better than I do? I mean, really?" Chrom chuckled as if to emphasize that he knew Lissa more than the cad claimed to, and he expected Lissa to laugh along with him. She did, but it was not a confident laugh that put utmost faith in Chrom's judgment. It was one of her nervous "I'm hiding something" types of laughs, and Chrom detected it immediately. What secret would his sister possibly have to hide from him this time?
"Lissa," the prince said, "what is it this time?" His sister seemed reluctant to answer him and held her hands behind her, turning her eyes away from his. "You can tell me anything; I'm sure that I'll be surprised to hear whatever it is you have to say but you can trust me to take it well." That only made the princess more hesitant in answering her older brother. She had no idea how he would react if she flat-out told him the truth given how vehement he was in proving the unfortunately correct trickster wrong.
'I want to surprise him later…' Lissa thought, 'but by then he may not be too much in a mood …well, we gotta get out of here first.' "Hey! What're you all standing around here for!?" the girl shouted. "Don't you all have somewhere to be right now!?" When the crowd did not disperse immediately Lissa decided to drag the two of them out of the area. But she couldn't leave without her undies still inside Lingerie Land. A distraction was needed.
"Oh crud, Plegians!" Lissa yelled and pointed in the crowded street ahead. Naturally everyone looked off into the distance and/or started to run while the princess grabbed her prince brother's arm and bolted into the store. The trickster man was quick to catch on to the ploy and gave chase, but the establishment's door was shut literally in his face. Once back inside Lissa rushed over to her dropped things and hurried to pay for her undergarments.
"Where are the Plegians!?" Chrom asked. "We can drive them off!"
"Yeah, about that," Lissa said, "I lied."
"What for, I—forget it." The prince felt the door budge a little from the outside and held his back against it. "You seriously left your stuff in here?" Chrom asked Lissa when he found her picking her belongings off of the floor. "What happened to proving to me that you're responsible?"
"Sass me later, hold the door until I pay for this stuff!" Lissa yelled back. She pulled out gold coins and asked for the appropriate price while Chrom kept the trickster at bay. The lingerie was paid for in record time and bagged. "And one more thing," Lissa said to the stunned cashier, "know any escape routes that'll get us away from crazy people trying to prove a point?"
"Back of the store, emergency exit, you can't miss it," the cashier quickly told her.
"Thanks! C'mon Chrom!" When the door wasn't being pushed against Chrom ran to catch up to Lissa who ran into the back of the store. Just like the clerk said there was a door labeled "Emergency Exit" and they both ran through the door, being met with a narrow alleyway. The royals internally questioned how impractical the "emergency exit" was and simply ran through the alley, sprinting and hopping over fences for a good three minutes straight until they came across a clearing, far away from the trickster man. Although neither of them knew exactly where they currently were they felt that they were safe.
"Good Gods," Chrom said. "I've never had to run like that for anything else in my entire life. Remind me to never challenge another man's knowledge for any reason, even if they are decidedly wrong."
"Yeah, sure…" Lissa gasped out, briefly collapsing to her knees in exhaustion. "Anyways, we've made all of the stops that we need to, so let's figure out where we are so that we can finally get to that club that I've been wanting to take us to." The sibling pair scanned their surrounding area and found a single info-booth with a map among the dilapidated housing district. They both found that they were located near the west most section of Ylisstol, and Lissa spotted the club in the restaurant district on the other side of their spot. Rubbing salt in their wounds further was the fact that they were already so close enough to the club from Lingerie Land, meaning that they had essentially ran in the opposite direction. The princess had to resist the urge to groan in exasperation while Chrom simply stared in disbelief.
"I can't believe this…" Lissa said. "This is going to be such a long trip, and I am not in the mood for anymore running, but I really want to get there before it's too late."
"Too late for what exactly?" Chrom asked.
"Too late for just getting in!" Lissa answered. "Maribelle told me that on weekends like this the club becomes jam-packed with people. It only opens at night but people have to purchase tickets as soon as possible to get in when it does open. If we want to snag a spot we might want to hurry there. But I've got blisters the size of eggs on my feet for running that much and my legs feel like pudding. I actually might just start considering taking Frederick's Fanatical Fitness Hour lessons seriously…"
"Well, if we must run there then I'm sure that I can carry you for some fair distance." Chrom suggested.
"You—you what?" Lissa asked him with a light blush creeping on to her face. "But you have your own stuff to carry with you and—"
"I could just put my items on right now," Chrom told her. "I did pay for them after all and I'm certain that they wouldn't slow me down any." Lissa didn't have an argument against Chrom carrying her at that point and she was sure that she couldn't run anymore, but she couldn't fight off the growing blush on her face knowing that the man of her dreams was about to carry her in his arms, almost like a chivalrous knight. Seeing no further opposition Chrom walked over to and picked up his younger sister, holding her in a bridal style, which made the girl's face turn a deeper shade of crimson as he looked to her smiling.
"Comfortable?" he asked her, receiving a quick nod and nervous smile in response. "Good. Hold on tight now." His sister didn't waste any time wrapping her arms around him as he took off running. 'Heh, Lissa sure looks surprised,' Chrom remarked in his head. 'I don't remember the last time I held her in my arms. If anyone had seen us like this they might have thought us to be together. Well – I do have to admit –even if we are kin we do look like we would make a nice couple with each other.' Unbeknownst to the prince of course was that his younger loving sister intended on making that a reality real soon.
