Miku had only been running for about five minutes, and she was already completely out of breath. That was because when it came to athleticism, the tealette didn't know of anyone who was worse than her. Back in middle school, she constantly had to stop during the one-mile lap they did every day in P.E., and she always came last in races. To her, any form of exercise was absolute torture. The only reason she had such a small frame was because of her diet. She was a vegetarian, and had a fast metabolism anyway.
Since her legs could barely move at this point, Miku stopped at the first place she considered safe–a park. She'd been there multiple times before, but few other people knew about it. The second she got there, she plopped onto a bench, panting. It was mid-summer, so most of the cherry trees had already bloomed, but a few petals fell in the breeze.
As Miku sat, catching her breath, she was deep in thought. 'Should I go to work, still? Should I go back home? How will I explain my behavior to Luka? Is she still trying to chase me?' Those were the thoughts that raced through her mind before she was suddenly brought back to reality by a voice calling her name. The tealette jumped harshly, thinking Luka had found her, but realized that wasn't Luka's voice. She did recognize it as her friend and coworkers' voice.
"Rin." Miku replied, turning and giving the blonde a smile. The blue-eyed-girl standing near her returned it, and Miku moved over slightly, gesturing for her friend to sit next to her. Rin complied, and Miku glanced down at her outfit. She was wearing a coat that flared out at the bottom, as if something puffy was under it, stockings, and tennis shoes. She also had a black bag with a random logo on it that Miku'd never seen before.
At the time, the temperature wasn't too hot to be in long sleeves, but if someone else saw Rin in her coat, they would think the girl was crazy. However, Miku knew exactly why Rin was wearing a coat–it was because of her job. Both Rin and Miku worked at a maid cafe.
Speaking of said maid cafe, that was the one thing that Miku never told Luka. She shared literally everything with her best friend; the two knew all of each others' passwords, had keys to their houses and cars, and would be the first to know of important matters, even before their parents. Although Miku had basically cut off all contact with her own parents, Luka was still close to her family. To Miku, however, Luka was family. The maid cafe was the only thing Miku couldn't bring herself to tell Luka. Miku was terribly embarrassed and ashamed about her job, and she felt as if Luka would judge her. She figured this wasn't true, though, because the two girls had shared embarrassing secrets before. For a brief moment, Miku considered telling Luka once she saw her again, but didn't have much time to think, seeing as Rin spoke again.
"So, 'Ku, what's up with you?" Rin began, using her nickname for Miku. "You're in you pajamas, your hair is a mess, and you've clearly been crying." The blonde asked, and Miku tilted her head. All three were true, but the first two were obvious.
"How'd you know I was crying?" The tealette asked, earning a sympathetic smile from Rin.
""Your eyes are bloodshot, and there's tear stains on your face. Did something happen to you? Please tell me." Usually Rin was quite playful and childish, but when it came to serious matters, the girl could be surprisingly professional. Miku asked her about this once, and Rin claimed her twin brother had rubbed off on her, so Miku took her word for it.
"No, nothing happened to me...Physically, at least. But today's my birthday, and..." The teen trailed off, not sure what to say, but she didn't have to, because Rin spoke. Her smile that was seemingly out of pity before turned into a genuine one.
"You say that like I didn't know." The blonde said, fake pouting, before unbuttoning her coat. She then pulled out a small box from out of it. Miku gasped, slightly shocked. Honestly, she didn't even remember telling Rin when her birthday was, but she pushed that aside.
"Rin...This is for me?" At the tealette's question, Rin simply looked at her, the blonde's face perfectly portraying 'Are-you-shitting-me-right-now'. At her expression, Miku smiled, gratefully taking the box. "You shouldn't have!" She exclaimed, and Rin rolled her eyes.
"You don't even know what it is yet, 'Ku! If it sucks, then I really shouldn't have, but if you like it, I should have. Go on, open it!" She urged, her childish side coming out a bit. At this, Miku couldn't help but smile–she found that side of Rin cute.
"I don't know what it is, yes, but I know you don't need to spend time or money on me. But, I'll open it!" Miku replied, then untied the cute teal ribbon, opening the box which was a darker blue. At the contents inside, Miku gasped. It was a charm bracelet, and Miku knew in an instant that it was custom. The silver piece of jewelry had charms of a leek, two music notes, a treble clef, a shiny red apple, a police hat, and a cute bubble. Each of those items represented something about Miku, something that only close friends would know.
"Rin! Oh my goodness, you really shouldn't have!" The overly excited tealette slipped the bracelet on, then nearly tackled her friend in a hug. Rin let out a laugh as she hugged Miku in return, before they both let go. "Rin, these things cost a fortune! How did you manage to pay for this?!" Miku was nearly yelling, causing Rin to giggle again.
"Simple, I worked overtime. You deserve it, and you better not say otherwise!" The blonde commanded, and Miku rolled her eyes. However, she didn't object.
"Fine, fine. But I can't believe you did that for me! Thank you, thank you, thank you!" She repeated, and Rin nodded.
"You're welcome! Anyway...Continue telling me what happened." She ordered, and Miku sighed quietly, then nodded.
"Alright...Here goes." Miku then went on to explain to Rin the events of that day; finding Luka had decorated Miku's apartment and brought gifts, reflecting on the fact that Luka only saw Miku as a friend, realizing that she probably didn't have a chance with Luka, and then coming to the park. Once Miku was finished, Rin face-palmed.
"Miku! You seriously still haven't told her?! You have to! Even if she doesn't feel the same, it won't change anything! A bond like the one you two have can't be broken by a crush." Rin reprimanded. She was the only person who knew about Miku's crush on Luka, and the blonde constantly pushed the older girl to tell her. But she just couldn't.
"Rin...I can't. I just can't! I..." Miku didn't know what else to say, but it didn't matter, because she suddenly burst into tears before she could say anything else. Rin looked a bit surprised, but said nothing. Instead, she silently pulled the tealette into a hug, letting her cry into her shoulder.
After about two minutes of Miku crying nonstop, she managed to recompose herself. She wiped her eyes and sat up, sniffing. "I'm sorry...I didn't mean to do that...But thank you for letting me cry on you." She said, smiling weakly at her friend, who returned it sadly.
"It's alright, sometimes you just need someone to cry on." Rin paused. "Hey, are you still going to work?" Miku considered the question, then shook her head. "Okay. How about we go to your apartment?"
"What if Luka's still there?" The new eighteen-year-old asked nervously. "How about your house?" She asked, and Rin shook her head.
"That won't work, my parents, brother, and cousins are there. If I know anything about Luka, she's not still at your apartment. Not in your room, at least." The blonde said, and Miku sighed. Rin did know quite a bit about Luka due to Miku often talking about her. She reluctantly nodded and stood up, and Rin followed suit. The two then began the short walk back to Miku's apartment, one paranoid that her best friend would still be there.
