Starr glared at him as she breathed heavily. The healing potion had done its job, but her side was still sore and tender. With a light grunt, she stood up.
Shin resisted the urge to offer a hand to help steady her. She’d only refuse him, and quite possibly slap his hand away. “I’m sorry about grabbing you like that.” He began. “It’s just, I know him. If I hadn’t stepped in, he would’ve called someone over who would’ve been only too willing to hurt you.”
Eyeing her bow slung over his shoulder, she snorted softly in aggravation. BaelAun was widely known for his callousness. It was far more likely that he would’ve taken a more direct approach to her continued defiance.
But why had this elf stepped in, allegedly on her behalf to prevent any harm coming to her? With a sigh, she muttered tiredly. “The village is this way.” She’d puzzle over his actions later. Right now she was exhausted and desperately wanted to get back to the village.
Shin hesitated when he noticed that she was not going in the direction his regiment had.
Turning to face him, she explained. “This way is faster. We will beat the rest of them there by two days.” Seeing his skeptical glance, she sighed and turned toward a large overgrowth of vines and shrubs. Pausing, she faced him briefly before sweeping her hand through the foilage and pulled it back.
To Shin’s amazement, a tunnel of comprised of intertwined tree roots was revealed. As he stepped closer, he could hear the faintest sound of water. “What is this?”
“This is one of our tunnels.” She replied tiredly before snarking. “We prefer our tunnels above ground.” She didn’t try to explain the intricate and complicated magics that were at work to create the hidden passageway through the forest.
“Are there more?” He queried, ignoring her sarcastic comment. He’d previously learned that the best way to disarm a light elf of their animosity was to simply ignore it. Gingerly, he stepped inside the tunnel woven from the very forest itself, marveling at the complexly interwoven vines, branches, and leaves, that comprised the tunnel. Still in wonder, he watched as she tugged on a seemingly innocuous climber and the leafy green curtain of creepers that had hidden the tunnel dropped back down, rendering the ‘doorway’ invisible once again.
Starr snorted softly as she began leading him through the passage. “Every inch of our land is connected to at least one hidden passage.”
Shin followed her in silence for a while. At regular intervals, they came across a plant he’d never seen before that seemed to give off an ethereal glow. As they traveled, they passed several connecting passages. Some of which she seemed particularly anxious to dart past as quickly as possible.
However, as they traveled, he noticed something peculiar about some of the branches. Slowing his pace to a halt, he stared at a strange tangle of tree limbs and roots. Slowly, he began to make out the faint shape of a bow, with a full quiver of arrows hidden just as carefuly beside it. He glanced back at her to find that she was watching him with a guarded expression.
Without breaking eye contact, he reached out and pulled the bow from it’s hiding place. “Interesting location for such a weapon…” He drawled slowly, beginning to understand why she hadn’t seemed at all concerned about leading him into what was clearly a closely guarded secret.
“Many an intruder has been led into these passages, never to leave them…” She intoned lowly, hoping that the discovery of the weapon would be enough to dissuade him from getting the idea of attacking her within the passages. If he knew there was the potential for a weapon to be within easy reach, maybe he would be less inclined to attack.
Replacing the bow where he’d found it, his lips tilted upward faintly in a wry smile at her antics. “I’m sure they have…” It was too obvious that her words had been meant to scare him. But it only made her more amusing to him. Which also made her more interesting. His slight smile widened to a full grin as she snorted faintly in irritation and turned away from him with a huff.
A short while later they passed yet another connecting tunnel and he heard the faint, distant, sounds of combat. Starr turned sharply and swiftly away from that corridor with a swift curse. A frown crossed his features but he remained silent. Somewhere on the other end of that corridor, her kin were fighting a desperate, and failing, battle.
Suddenly, a thought occurred to him. “These passages must be getting quite a lot of use. Why haven’t we seen anyone else so far?”
“I didn’t think you wanted to be seen by one of the squads on their way to or from the battle.” She quipped.
Shin repressed a disdainful scoff. “I appreciate your consideration.” He’d taken out entire platoons of theirs in the past with an ease that was disturbing. Especially when he considered that similarly trained warriors were all that stood between the light elves and annilation. If the orcs didn’t destroy them, then his kind surely would.
Watching her from behind, he reflected on the battle plans he’d been privy to. Any light elves that survived were to be captured and sentenced to a lifetime of servitude.
He hated the plan.
Looking at her, he realized that she wouldn’t make it through the dark elven invasion. She’d fight to the death to maintain her freedom. His feet stopped moving of their own accord.
Starr’s ear twitched twice as she registered the lapse of his footfalls. She continued on for a few more paces before turning to gaze at him quizzically. His face had a fiercesome scowl and she eased backwards a bit in preparation to lunge back and away.
Watching her, he remembered his arguments against the invasion falling on seemingly deaf ears. He hadn’t been able to save them. The invasion was proceeding. But if he couldn’t save all of them, perhaps he could save her. Their intelligence officers had already ascertained that the light elven defenses would crumble after the dark elves successfully repelled the orc forces. It was a foregone conclusion, the light elves would fall to their dark cousins. The humans weren’t coming to their aid, they were too embroiled in their own wars to spare sending precious supplies and warriors to the light elves.
However, she was sure to refuse to go with him. Which left him only one option…
