Chapter 2: An Unfortunate Reunion
Jack brought real venison home to Mira, the first meat they’ve had in months. The last job went so smoothly that he was given an extra large sum of cash, especially so with the whereabouts of this “Corrin”, and he decided to treat himself and his sister. Over dinner, he told her what happened.
“You did what?! Big brother, the Hoshidans are not our friends! Don’t you remember what they did to mum?! You’d forgive them just like that?!” She was going red in the face.
“I haven’t forgiven, nor will I ever forget. But Shion is not like that, she could’ve fought back, and likely killed me, but she didn’t even reach for her lance. Mum died as a soldier, not out of malicious intent, anyway. Not all Hoshidans are evil.”
“You say that after one meeting with one girl? You really are useless. Why don’t you just run away with her if you seem to love her so much, leave me behind like dad did?!” Mina storms off. “And if you’re gonna carry that thing, why don’t you just kill some animal for food instead of buying it? Dumbass…” She storms off into her room.
Jack was left in silence, the single candle casting an orange glow on his face, which soon became streaked with wet lines. “...I know, M…” he whispered to no one with a quavering breath. “I know I should… but I can’t…” A few minutes pass, and Jack extinguishes the candle and retires for the night. He stops in front of Mina’s door, ready to knock to apologize, but he contemplates, and decides not to.

Shion sent home half of her pay to her parents so her father could afford his medicine. Because of the speedy and safe delivery of the letter, she got a bonus, so she treated herself to a nice cut of venison for tonight. It had been too long since she ate a nice venison steak at an outdoor local restaurant, and, for tonight, she was content. Not happy, but content. The stars shone overhead, twinkling as they always did. Those lights are fallen spirits, Shion, her mother once said. I think the brightest one is watching you, keeping you safe. A lone tear runs down her face as she recalled what she could remember of his voice. “Riku…”
She took a breath and remembered the day she got the news. She was quite young, barely in double digits in age. But that day, Princess Hinoka came to their house personally, her eyes as red as her hair, as she delivered the news of how Riku had played martyr to protect Hinoka and Prince Takumi as they fled a Nohrian raid. When they returned, Riku’s body was humiliated, cut apart, torn to shreds, the eyes gouged out, the tongue cut off, missing fingers, and they even cut off his genitalia, just because they could. The Hoshidans buried him in a hero’s grave. That night, her mother’s cries permeated the house as her father tried to comfort her, but Shion retreated away, running, hiding, no way Riku, her brother, her hero, could be dead… no, no, No NO NONONONO-
“-iss? Miss? Are you alright?” One of the waiters looked at her, a severe look of distress on his face.
Shion realized how she must’ve looked and quickly put up her walls. “Oh-Y-Yes. Thank you. Please, it’s nothing. Don’t worry yourself.” She smiled fakely at him, and he begrudgingly accepted her excuse and left. Gotta be more careful than that, she chided herself and left before she got any more awkward experiences. She left the capital and found herself on a hill overlooking the city.
Once more, she looked up at the stars. Finding the brightest one, her chin trembled. “Riku… Do you remember…?” she asked no one. “That day I fell into the river? I couldn’t swim, and the current was really fast because it was spring. Another few seconds and I would’ve been in a casket right now. But… it was your arms that pulled me out, your eyes, your kind eyes were the first thing I saw…” Her eyes watered. “Why am I remembering you so much all of a sudden, brother…?” Then she realized. “That Nohrian. Jack. He… he’s like you were, brother. Not wanting to fight, but made to do it anyway. But why, I wonder? …Money, probably.”
As expected, the silence of the night told her everything she needed to know. She looked at her brother’s star. “...Would you watch over Jack too, Riku? He… People like that… The world needs more of them.”

Orders came before the sun rose. The entire standing army, spies included, were to gather outside Windmire. Orders did not say what they were to do, but it was evidently something big. Jack quickly scribbled a note and left Mina all the money he got yesterday before joining his squad. The city was still sleeping, but Jack knew the backroads well and expertly navigated the twisting and darkened corridors. He arrived at the meeting point and joined the standing army in his squad. It was then that news of the actual reasoning of the army gathering was announced.
They were going to invade Hoshido.

Orders came before the sun rose. The entire Nohrian army was advancing on Hoshido, going through the Bottomless Canyon and into the plains, where the Hoshidan Army, messengers included, were to meet them. This was outright a declaration of war, and Hoshido had no intention of letting their adversary have their way. Shion’s orders were to stay with her squad and pick off any stragglers that try to slip past the defensive line, which the Nohrian spies were notorious for doing. She straightened her helmet and tried to not think about who she might have to kill in the next few hours.
Dawn broke, the day passed, and then evening set in, the sun casting long shadows behind the Hoshidan army. In the glare of the setting sun, black banners pierced the horizon, as the sound of hooves and metal boots became steadily louder. They stopped several hundred meters away from Hosido’s army. One Nohrian on horseback with flowing wavy blonde hair rode ahead of the army and stopped on an island in a river that divided the plain in two.
“Hoshido!” He called out. “I am crown prince Xander of Nohr! You have stolen my brother, Prince Corrin, from us!” Two inaudible gasps escaped lips from two people on either side of the armies. “We demand that you return him to us at once, or else we will conquer Hoshido, in the name of King Garon and all of Nohr!”
A lone swordsman walked from Hoshido’s army and confronted prince Xander. “Crown prince Xander, I am crown prince Ryoma of Hoshido. Corrin is the son of… the late queen Mikoto, our mother. His home is here, with us, not you.” He drew his blade from the scabbard on his hip, the blade crackling with electricity. “You will have to take him by force if you want him. Not that this would be difficult for Nohrians.”
Xander also drew his blade, a dark aura emanating from the steel. “You Hoshidans stole princess Azura, my little sister, from Nohr. You would know a thing or three about despicable acts. But the time for words has passed, crown prince Ryoma.” Xander held the reins tighter, ready to rush forward.
Ryoma also readied his stance. “We stole Lady Azura when you stole Corrin, in retaliation, scum. But I agree, let our blades talk for us. Have at you!”
The two rivals ran towards each other, and each army did the same. Within seconds, blood, steel, cries, fire, screams, laughter, all flooded the air. A flash of light and the river suddenly dried, providing openings and more room to fight. Fliers fell from the skies, Soldiers trampled beneath boots and hooves. A Pegasus right next to Shion suddenly had a hole in its wing from an arrow, and both the steed and the rider died when their heads impacted the earth. A cavalier close to Jack had his sword entrapped by a Hoshidan’s naginata, and he was then stabbed through the heart by his partner. Jack ran and pretended to play dead among the corpses, slowly inching his way towards a small grove of trees. Eventually, he made it, unseen. Shion was flying around, doing her best to parry the attacks of the wyverns around her, but that made it difficult to dodge attacks at the same time. Suddenly, there was a sharp descent and her Pegasus was crying out in pain. She knew that she was about to die, and closed her eyes, ready for the inevitable-but her Pegasus seemed to have other plans, and kicked her off at the last second before impact. The sudden change in velocity slowed her descent enough that she landed hard on her front, cracking a rib in the process, but she was still alive. Shion coughed up blood and could barely see straight, but she steadily got her bearings, and she slowly crawled into a nearby grove of trees.
Unbeknownst to both Jack and Shion, they hid in the same forest, hiding only a few trees apart. Shion did her best to keep quiet, but the pain got to be too much for her and her breath shook and caught, catching the sharp ears of Jack. Approaching his unknown companion, he looked at the source of the sound and saw Shion clutching her side. He ran to her, careful not to be seen, and knelt at her side.
“Sh-Shion… you’re hurt.”
“J-Jack…?” Tears ran down her face as she saw his familiar, worried face. “Is… is that really you…?”
Jack said nothing and made makeshift bandages from sticks and his own clothing. “Hold still, I’ll bandage you, okay?” Jack removed her clothes, including her brassiere, his deft hands tying the makeshift splint on her bare torso. He made a conscious effort to keep her modesty from his eyes. Once he was finished, he replaced her shirt, but the outermost robe no longer fit, so they decided to keep it off for now.
“...Why did you do that, Jack? I’m… Hoshidan. Your… enemy. You should’ve killed me. I’m… not worth the time.” Shion’s eyes fell, looking at her own blood in the mud. “You could just… shoot me. I won’t fight back.”
“What? No, I’m not doing that. You needed helping, so I helped. What’s wrong with that?”
“It’s treason. Getting executed would be the least of your worries.”
Jack nodded. “I know full well just where my allegiances lie, and murdering a defenseless woman instead of helping her does not lie there. It’s best if I… pretend this didn’t happen. That way we can both keep on-”
“Oi! You! Runt! Eheheh, you found a little peggy girl, eh?” A large, ax-wielding man approached the duo. “Eh? Wazzat? She’s got bandages… Did you -erk!” An arrow shaft suddenly protruded from his neck. His eyes looked at the bowman that did this, pupils constricting in fear and anger, he stumbled about in death throes, and he slowly choked to death, drowning in his own blood. Jack’s hand begins to shake uncontrollably as he looks at the evidence of the first life he’s taken. The duo was speechless for a few long seconds.
“...That man… was Nohrian. W-why would…” Shion looked at Jack, whose breathing had become rapid and shallow. Everything was trembling. His speech wasn’t intelligible. His eyes flashed every which way, trying to absorb the full scene. He backed up to a tree and his arms flailed in surprise. Shion called out his name, trying to get him to calm down, and on the fourth attempt, he seemed to hear her.
“I… I… I ki- I killed…” He took a deep breath, and it made him cough.
“Yes. You did.” Shion didn’t know what to say, so she tried to keep a neutral, factual stance. “You did it… to protect me?”
“I… What if he had a wife? A child? Did I… just kill them too? No… I… I don’t want…!” His breath quickened again and he began to cry. He turns, and his fist lands on the tree behind him, and he keeps punching the wood until both his knuckles and the bark turn red, oblivious to Shion trying to console him.
“Jack, please, enough.” Her hand grabbed her arm subconsciously. “Hurting yourself over this solves nothing.” With much difficulty, but a strong will, she stood on shaking legs and walked to his side. She carefully placed a hand on his shoulder. “You saved me, Jack. Me, who you should’ve killed as your enemy. That makes you a hero to me.” She smiled her genuine smile at him again. “That makes you strong. Please, stand up.”
“Sh-Shion… you… Why would you forgive me for this…? I killed him! I murdered him, in cold blood! How could-”
She interrupted. “Because you deserve it. You are a good man. You are very kind to worry about some stranger’s family so strongly. So stop it, please.”
A few pained seconds pass as Jack’s heartbeat slows. “...Now what? I… I can’t go back to Nohr. I’ll be a prisoner in Hoshido. I’ve… lost everything. …Mina… How will you get by?”
“Mina?”
“My… little sister. I’ve been taking care of her since our mother died. Food is expensive, and Windmire has a lot of… shady back rooms that she has no part of.” Jack’s hands clench into fists, but he restrains himself from any further tree punching.
Shion smiles. “Then we gotta go get her. We can’t just leave her there.”
“Madwoman. Are you insane? You’d be hanged without a trial and I’d be lucky to be drawn and quartered.” He goes silent. “You need to return home. You haven’t done anything. This is my fight, not yours.“ He turns to leave her behind.
“Wait, please, Jack!” She calls out to him. “I… want to go. Hoshido… has good memories, but bad ones as well. Very… bad ones. And I want…” She uses her father’s breathing technique to steady herself. “I want to help you. Consider it payment for your first aid.”
“...Are you really sure, Shion? This isn’t a decision you can make lightly.”
“Yes, Jack. I’ll be considered MIA, but I want to help you and your sister. This is the path that… that I want to walk.” She gives him one more genuine smile.
The battle that had been waging concluded without a clear victor, as both side’s commanders had retreated, and both Corrin and Azura had disappeared from the battlefield without a trace.
