Caitlyn could feel her sense of consciousness return. She couldn’t tell how long she was out, but knew that it couldn’t have been too long. With her eyes still closed, she took a deep breath, and slowly exhaled, trying to calm and centre her thoughts. The last thing she remembered was Jinx making her put on her Enforcer uniform after… but only after doing what she did to her in the shower. She then remembered sighing in fear and resignation as the girl ordered her to take a deep breath of whatever was in the mask she had shoved in her face. She inhaled and then… the Enforcer furrowed her brows in concentration as her last memory was of the blackness forming from the corners of her vision as it got clouded. And the last thing she heard was the Jinx giggling as she blacked out.
The Enforcer, having run the last few moments of her consciousness through her head, still had her eyes closed as she tried to flex and move her limbs. She could feel them, but when she tried to move them, she found she couldn’t! In fact, she couldn’t even turn or move her head.
Panic set in, and she snapped her eyes open. She tried to move her head again and found that she couldn’t. It was as though there was something over her head, keeping it in place. All she could do is stare forward in one direction. She took a deep breath and tried to focus. Even though the lighting in the room was poor, from what she could see, it looked like some kind of medical facility. An abandoned one, by the looks of it, because it didn’t look like it had ever been maintained. The smell was rancid, as if someone had lived in the facility and never bothered to clean up after themselves. Slowly and tentatively sniffing the air, Caitlyn tried to get a sense of what the room smelled like. There was a mixture of grime, dirt, and likely feces that were never cleaned up. And that wasn’t counting whatever other illicit liquids and substances were in the facility. Straining her eyes to look up, she saw that there were a series of overhead lamps spread out along the darkened ceiling. Each light would flicker on and off at different times, adding to the disturbing atmosphere of the room. The ceiling was at least 20 feet high, and the room was large, but the flickering lighting and darkness made it seem claustrophobic. She tried to focus, and turned her eyes to either side of her, to take in her surroundings.
Along the darkened walls, it looked like there were shelves with books and beakers. Turning her eyes to her left, she saw that in front of one of the wall shelves, was a blackboard of some sort, on a set of wheels. The kind of thing a science teacher would use in their classroom. On it were diagrams, pictures with writings that looked like some kind of equation. The writing was in neat white chalk. But it looked like someone had messily written over the original writing, using some kind of fluorescent markers or paint. The lighting in the room flickered intermittently, making it hard to make out more details. The Enforcer squinted her eyes to focus harder, and then felt her heartbeat quicken, because she saw that whoever had written in with those coloured markers, had also drawn pictures of their own. Pictures of smiling monkeys. Jinx. Her head firmly in place, all she could do was turn her eyes to her right in an effort to turn away from the disturbing pictures.
She wished she hadn’t.
Because before she could look away from what was to the right of her, her mind had already registered what her eyes had seen. On the right was a large white countertop, about 4 feet long by 3 feet wide. On the side were oversize wooden drawers, two by two, from top to bottom. On top the table were papers haphazardly strewn all over its surface. There were also multiple beakers on stands, with various liquids in them, each one a different colour. Some clear, some bubbling on their own, as if they were alive. But near the centre of the countertop was a large flask, and in that flask, was what looked like a half litre of a purplish pink liquid that gave off an eerie glow. She wasn’t sure what it was. It was some form of shimmer. It had to be.
Swallowing hard and shutting her eyes in an effort to forget what she saw without success, Caitlyn opened them and then looked straight ahead, and saw that there was a cracked mirror, about the size of a door, about 20 feet from her. It was hard to see earlier, but as the light continued to flicker, and her vision began to adjust to the poor conditions, she began to see it more clearly. She then stared straight ahead at it, focusing, and was able to see herself. And see why she couldn’t move. Feeling a cold sweat begin to trickle down her neck, the Enforcer took in what she saw in the mirror. Took in what she was looking at. Took in, the sight of her.
She was strapped to some kind of metal table that had been propped up vertically. She was strapped to it like a patient would be at an asylum. A thick strap went across her lower legs, another across her waist and wrists, and another across her chest. The straps were tight, and she could barely move. The floor leading from her to the mirror was tiled and white, but through time and neglect, the floors looked a dirty off white whenever the flickering light stayed on for more than a few seconds. Some tiles were cracked, others were missing, leaving a dirty brown indent of dirt. She then looked up and straight ahead to her image in the mirror, so she could observe everything she could in the flickering light.
She looked at herself in the mirror, and saw that over her head was some kind of metal bowl. The kind used for…shock treatments? She felt a cold sweat as her eyes focused on her image. There were wires going from the Helmut, for lack of a better word, to somewhere behind her. She struggled, but couldn’t move. She could feel the sweat from her body under the uniform, as panic began to set in. But before she could think of what to do, a giggle echoed along the walls, causing the Enforcer to freeze in place. The echo seemed to be coming from everywhere. But after a few moments, it localized to being in front of Caitlyn. Then, Jinx’s head popped out from behind the cracked mirror in front of her. She was wearing a sadistic grin, even more disturbing than the angry face she wore when she last saw her. She then popped out from behind the mirror, and twirled once before slowly skipping her way towards her. As Jinx got closer, Caitlyn saw that her eyes still glowed with that eerie pink light, like they were imbued with shimmer. And her movements were chaotic. One moment, she moved with the fluidity of a cat, but the next moment, it was like she was being shocked, as her body twitched and spasmed. But it seemed like she was in control the whole time, and actually enjoyed it. Jinx then stopped in front of the bound Enforcer, placing both hands behind her back. After a few moments of silence, Jinx bent forward, so that she was less than two feet from the Enforcer’s face. She let out a stifled giggle, before a more menacing, angry look appeared on her face. Then, she said in a cruel accusatory tone:
“You really fooled everyone, didn’t ya, cupcake?”
Caitlyn blinked once, flinching the word that Vi had once said to her in the brothel. She then spoke up after a moment:
“Jinx, I, I don’t know what you’re talking about —“
“Liar!” Jinx snapped in a loud voice, causing the Enforcer to gasp.
“You’re a liar! You didn’t see me, but I was there when you lied.” Jinx smirked, as if catching the Enforcer in a lie.
Caitlyn could only stare back in an expression of confusion. Jinx rolled her eyes and grinned as she spoke:
“In that big council room. I saw you lie. When you talked about how you wanted to help the people of Zaun. Remember? You were such a liar. You didn’t want to help anyone. You just wanted to sound like a good person, someone who actually would, you know, help the people of Zaun. Oh, and how do I know? I was watching you from the ceiling. Got in through one of the windows and no one noticed”
Caitlyn swallowed at the realization that Jinx was present in that room. But rather than focus on how Jinx was able to watch without being noticed, she tried to argue back, speaking in as calm a voice as she could:
“I, I wasn’t lying Jinx. I meant it. I want to help the people of Zaun. Really, I do.”
Jinx’s expression turned to one of disgust, as she said:
“Yeah, you say it, but you don’t really mean it. And even if you did, the council members would never listen to you. I saw. They weren’t listening to you. You know that, right, cupcake?”
Caitlyn tried to hold Jinx’s gaze before she let out a sigh of frustration, knowing that Jinx was right about the council. She couldn’t help the people of Zaun.
“So instead of going and helping the people of Zaun, you’d rather just talk to that council about how much you wanna help them, even though you know they wouldn’t want you to. You just wanna sound nice for my sister, right?”
Caitlyn’s head snapped up as she said in a defensive tone:
“That’s not true! I really do want to help the people of Zaun, I just…”. She trailed off, unsure what to say next.
Jinx’s expression seemed to change. Her eyebrows went up slightly, and a smile played on her face. It was almost like a cautious smile as she finished for the Enforcer:
“You just don’t know how.” She said it in the tone of a question instead of an answer. As if she had made up her mind about something. Caitlyn looked up at hearing Jinx’s words, feeling for a moment a sense of hope. A sense that Jinx understood that she did care. As she looked up, she saw Jinx have a strange, unreadable look on her face as she repeated her last words:
“You just don’t know how… yet.” Jinx repeated it again, almost staring through the Enforcer. Then, after a moment, A smile crept onto Jinx’s face, before a cackle emerged from Jinx. One so strong, it caused her to double over, laughing for a few seconds, before taking a breath and standing up straight. As she did so, Jinx’s glowing eyes fixed on Caitlyn. And after a moment, she began clapping, startling the Enforcer, who a moment earlier had the faintest traces of hope, but now felt confusion and fear again.
“Yahhh! Then it’s a good thing I brought you here, cupcake!”
Jinx spoke in such a happy tone, it seemed so out of place in the creepy derelict lab they were in. Caitlyn swallowed, trying to take a measured breath. But as she did so, Jinx lurched forward and placed two hands on either side of her that by then was wet with sweat and matted locks of her straight blue hair. The girl then leaned forward, her expression was one of curiosity and delight. She then said it a playful tone:
“Say it.”
Caitlyn was speechless, unsure of what Jinx wanted. Jinx then said in a more serious tone.
“Say it. Say 'I want to help the people of Zaun’.” Jinx said, mocking Caitlyn’s accent.
The Enforcer swallowed, and said in a shaky tone that made it sound like a question.
“I— I want to help the people of Zaun?”
Jinx grinned, her face inches from the Enforcer’s as she said with a toothy grin.
“Louder. And say it like you mean it. Say you ‘really’ want to help the people of Zaun.” Jinx said wearing a smile that was a mix of excitement, malicious cruelty, and… something else.
Caitlyn felt her body becoming more and more wet with sweat from fear, and after swallowing, spoke out:
“I - I re— really want to help the people of Zaun!” Caitlyn stammered in a shaky voice that echoed in the empty laboratory, her voice almost cracking at trying to blurt out what Jinx wanted her to say.
After a moment, Jinx then let out a malicious grin as she giggled. She then said in a happy voice.
“That’s the spirit, cupcake! Well, let’s get started then. And the first thing you’re gonna do, to help the people of Zaun…”
Jinx trailed off as she stood up, causing the Enforcer to relax somewhat. But then, Jinx looked up at Caitlyn, her head inches from the Enforcers’s, as she continued:
“… is help me blow up the council building!”
Caitlyn’s eyes widened in shock. She then felt a surge of anger as she retorted.
“I’ll do no such thing!”
Jinx’s expression turned to one of mock shock, before she wore an almost sympathetic expression as she said:
“Oh, I know, cupcake, you can’t do it now, and that’s cuz you’re not ready yet. Cuz you’re broken.”
Jinx’s words caused Caitlyn to frown in both anger and confusion as she said:
“Broken?” Jinx nodded as she replied.
“Yup. I can tell, cupcake. But you’re broken in a different way. You’re always so serious and miserable. That’s why you can’t help people. But I’m gonna fix that. I’m gonna fix you up! And once I do, you’re not just gonna help the people of Zaun…”. She paused as if remembering some secret joke:
“… you’re gonna wanna help the people of Zaun, just like you said you would—”
“—every last, one of them.”
It was the seriousness of Jinx’s tone that frightened Caitlyn more than Jinx’s anger. But before she could say anything, Jinx walked towards the table to the Enforcer’s right. The one with the beakers and drawers. She opened the drawer and began rummaging through it. Caitlyn couldn’t see what she was looking for, but then felt a cold sweat go through her as she saw what Jinx held in her hands. On one hand was what looked like a large needle and syringe. Jinx then turned to Caitlyn and, seeing her horrified reaction, smiled, before wearing an almost friendly face as she said:
“Now, just a moment, cupcake.” Jinx then put the syringe over the large flask of shimmer liquid, and sticking the needle in, drew back the syringe all the way, drawing all of the shimmer into the syringe. Jinx then held it to her face as she turned around, the pink fluid, seemingly alive, almost matching her shimmer-coloured eyes. Jinx then bit her lip playfully, as she turned towards the captive Enforcer.
“Jinx, what are you doing?” Caitlyn pleaded, but Jinx only laughed as she said:
“‘Fixing you, cupcake, what do you think? Now, don’t move.” Caitlyn tried to argue, but Jinx calmly walked over to her, and, pulling the exposed part of her flesh between her forearm and upper arm, licked her finger before rubbing in into Caitlyn’s flesh. Caitlyn felt a shock of revulsion at Jinx’s saliva being smeared against her skin like some alcohol solution. Jinx chuckled at Caitlyn’s squirming, and after a moment of staring at the spot, swiftly jammed the needle into Caitlyn’s arm. Caitlyn gasped in pain and tried to move, but couldn’t. Jinx then stared at Caitlyn, a strange smile, almost an innocent one, on her face. Caitlyn silently shook her head, trying to get Jinx not to inject the shimmer, but Jinx just grinned and pressed the syringe, slowly injecting the glowing pink into her vein. As she did so, Caitlyn could feel the fluid coursing up her arm into her body. It was like it was burning, and cold at the same time. And as it travelled farther and farther into her, she could feel her body shiver, as if it were cold. Caitlyn could feel her anxiety and fear grow, as she tried to wiggle out of her binds. Caitlyn then grew more alarmed, as she could feel it spreading, like tendrils, through her body, up her back, to the base of her spine, as if it were trying to get into her head.
Slowly, Jinx pulled the syringe from the Enforcer’s arm, playfully rubbing and patting the spot of the injection, before turning to look up at the prone Enforcer, who was by then almost hyperventilating as they tried to struggle out of their bindings.
“Soooo… how do you feel, cupcake?” Jinx said with a sinister grin.
Caitlyn swallowed and took a breath. She felt a burning sensation as she could feel the liquid permeate throughout her body. As she breathed, she could feel it, like tea slowly going through her. Only, it wasn’t tea. And it wasn’t just going down her body, she could feel it in her head, like having ice cream and getting a head cold, only, it wasn’t cold, it was warm, and it wasn’t ice cream. It was some kind of shimmer. And it was already in her… doing something. She turned her eyes to the smiling Jinx, and said in a gone that was a mix of accusatory anger and fear:
“Wh— what did you give me?!”
Jinx covered her mouth, as if trying to suppress a giggle. She shrugged, but then leaned down the Enforcer before saying:
“I gave you medicine, silly. Medicine to make you better. So that you can help me. AND more importantly, help the people of Zaun. Just like you promised!”
“Medicine? What kind of medicine?” Caitlyn asked, afraid to hear the answer.
“Well, its got shimmer, as you can see. Ya know, shimmer’s that super drug that can make you stronger, faster, do things longer. But I fixed that up, cuz some of that stuff, the being and stronger, you don’t really need as much. So I gave you something that’s supposed to help with that.. now, what was it… dopamine? Yeah that was it. Something to do with the brain. And two other things. Hmmm, what was it? Why can’t I remember? Oh well, I’ll figure it out. But the thing is, it takes a lot of time to mix with your body, but I can’t wait, so that’s what this is for!”
Jinx finished by reaching over Caitlyn and tapping the metal bowl on her head, resulting in a pinging sound that caused the Enforcer to flinch. She then looked at Caitlyn again and spoke:
“Now, got any questions?” Jinx said happily. Caitlyn looked up in horror as she said:
“Wa— wait, Jinx. You said two other things? What… what were they?” The Enforcer didn’t really want to know, but at that point, was just trying to stall. She seemed relieved when for a moment, Jinx seemed perplexed, her glowing eyes looking up, as if trying to figure out the answer. But then, a grin formed, and she leaned close and said in an excited tone:
“Oh! Now I remember! One of them was adrenaline…” and as Jinx spoked, she reached back with her hand to the lever, and switched it from zero, to 3, on a scale of 1 to 6. Caitlyn felt the pain of static shock as the helmet sprung to life. Thousands of volts travelling through it, and through her head.
“Ahhhhhhgggah!!!!!” She screamed in agony. It went on for almost 10 seconds before it stopped, with the only sound being the sound of the dial being turned, and Jinx’s cackling.
Caitlyn took a breath, trying to compose herself. Feeling her body writhing in pain. But before she could take another breath, Jinx said:
“Oh, now I remember what the other thing was, it was really important. And it had a fancy name, It was called… uh,…. Oh, I know —” She then flipped the dial from zero to 5, causing Caitlyn to scream again, her voice echoing through the laboratory. Throughout the shocks, she could hear Jinx trying to shout over the Enforcer’s screams:
“— Aphrodisiacs!” Caitlyn’s eyes widened before shutting again in pain. Her head felt like it was on fire. And whatever it was that Jinx made her drink, she could feel it reacting, mixing in her body. And it felt like it was spreading everywhere. But more than anything, she could feel it working her way up to her… head? Jinx then stopped, causing Caitlyn to try to take a breath. She could feel the sweat permeate throughout her body, her hair, matted wet, and her body convulsing for a few seconds before slowly settling to rest. Caitlyn tried to focus on her breathing, taking deep breaths, and then swallowing. She closed her eyes tightly, before opening them to stare up at Jinx. She felt something in her body. It felt warm. But it wasn’t temperature warm. What was it? Why did she feel so—
“Wh— what did you do to me, Jinx?” She said again while writhing in pain.
Jinx stared back with a malevolent grin.
“I told you. I’m fixing you so that you can help the people of Zaun. Hmmm” Jinx paused as she took her eyes off Caitlyn’s face, and looked at her body, strapped on the upright table.
Caitlyn tried to collect herself, to take a breath, panting under the pain of the shocks, before struggling to speak, pleading:
“Ple— please, Ji- Jinx. Please stop. I, I want to help the people of Zaun— ahhh! You don’t have to do this. And… And I can help you too. You need help, I can —“
Jinx smirked and raised an eyebrow, before taking a finger and touching the part of Caitlyn’s arm that was exposed skin. As Jinx pressed down on it Caitlyn flinched, feeling a strange sensation course from the spot of the touch to the back of her head. Jinx then slowly dragged her finger a few inches, causing Caitlyn to groan, letting out a sound that was so unlike her. Jinx noticed and laughed, as she lifted her finger, and then looked at Caitlyn and said:
“So, how’d that feel, cupcake?”
Caitlyn bristled at that word, and repeated what she said, as she could feel her body spasming, but was more worried about why her body reacted the way it did when Jinx touched her, or why her head seemed to tingle.
“Wh.. what did you do?” Was all she could manage.
Jinx pouted, tilting her head to the side before replying.
“Hmmm. Making you better, but … it seems to be taking too long. You’re body seems to be liking what I did more than your head. And that’s not right. Hmm, what to do, how to fix that, if there was only a way to -oh! I know! More power!” Jinx grinned as she looked back at the dial, Caitlyn’s eyes followed her in horror, trying to shake her head as her body still spasmed.
“Full Power!” Jinx screamed happily, her voice echoing across the walls and ceiling. Before Caitlyn could say anything, Jinx turned the dial past 5, to its maximum. Caitlyn could hear a brief hum of the machine charging up, and the static build up in the helmet, before she the spikes of pain began, and her body began to convulse under the binding.
“Ahhh! AhhhhhhH! Ohh! Jii-Jiiinx! Please, stooooop!” Caitlyn tried to say, as the currents began coursing through her body again. Only this time, she could feel it go deeper. And her body was feeling a different sensation. Both hot and cold, but not in the way of temperature. And it was as though it was coursing through her body, and making its way up her back, to the base of her spine, up to her —
“Unnnnghhhhh! Ohhhh! Jinx! Stoo —“
Jinx lowered the dial by one setting, allowing Caitlyn to feel a brief drop in the strength of the shocks. But Jinx had only done that to reduce Caitlyn’s screaming for a moment, to shout at her in a playful voice:
“Say it!”
Caitlyn tried to look over at Jinx, who said with an evil grin:
“Say ‘I really want to help the people of Zaun!’ And keep saying it” Jinx said it loudly, mimicking Caitlyn’s accent.
Caitlyn could only glower through the pain, before trying to speak through the convulsions. As much as she knew it wouldn’t make any difference, she said it instinct, as if believing it would somehow lessen the pain:
“I— ahhh, I really wa— want to, aaahhh, hell—p the p-people of Z-Zaunnn- ahhh!!!”
It because worse as Jinx then put the setting to maximum again, increasing the sound of the screams.
Jinx’s grin was threatening to split her face. Not just because of the fun she was having listening to the piltie scream and try to talk at the same time. Although, it was that too. Hearing the piltie try to talk while getting interrupted by the shocks was like someone bouncing off someone’s knee, and whatever they’re saying keeps getting cut off as they talk.
But was really making Jinx giggle, were the screams themselves… because those screams… they were starting to sound a lot different.
They weren’t sounding like screams anymore. At least… not screams of pain. And the piltie didn’t even know it! She had no idea what was going on in her! The shocks were a really quick way to mix up that special cocktail she put into the piltie. Kinda like miking ingredients in a blender, so that they all got mushed together. And make it stick, so that her system couldn’t ever flush it out. It was a special blend, that Jinx didn’t bother diluting, which meant that even Jinx wasn’t really sure what was gonna happen. If the piltie didn’t make it… meh. But if she did pull thought, ohhh, it was gonna be so much fun to see how she turned out!
Caitlyn’s body was convulsing and gyrating and her teeth were chattering together as the currents continued to course through her body, mixing Jinx’s shimmer within her body. Caitlyn felt a different sensation as the shocks continued, as she could feel something not only in her body, but in her head. As this happened, her eyes began to go up, further until she shut them, trying to will herself to withstand whatever was happening inside. She could feel spittle foam at the sides of her mouth, and tried to wipe it with her tongue between screams, to little avail. All the while, over the sound of the static shock and her screaming, she could hear Jinx’s cackle, adding anger to her pain. She was trying to help the people, that’s all she wanted to do. So why was Jinx giving her something to make her do something she already promised she wanted to do? She was still screaming, but it felt like the screams weren’t the same as before, because her body, or head, was starting to feel something different.
She could feel the tears streaming down her cheeks as the currents were making her body go haywire, likely causing permanent damage to her motor functions. But something was happening with each shock, it was as though it was speeding Jinx’s special shimmer throughout her body. And she was feeling it in her brain. Suddenly, Caitlyn could feel the corners of her vision blur, and she realized she was on the verge of passing out while being shocked. She let out another scream before she could feel the blackness overtake her.
“Unnnghhh ohhhhhh, aahhhh!!! —-“
Jinx saw the Enforcer go limp, and quickly turned around and turned off the dial. She then turned to look up at the Enforcer, and saw that she was wasn’t moving, her head slumped forward. Jinx frowned as she leaned over and saw the Enforcer’s eyes closed, her face caked with sweat. The helmet had smoke coming from the wires. Oops, Jinx thought to herself nonchalantly, maybe she overdid it, just a little bit. But then her feelings soon turned to anger, as she slapped the piltie’s face, trying to get her to wake up, but nothing. The Enforcer’s head was slumped forward, her sweaty blue hair falling down around her face. Jinx stared at the Enforcer, before walking forward a few steps towards the mirror, to look at the Enforcer in the mirror. She wasn’t moving, but then Jinx then saw something. It was like someone poked the Piltie with a cattle prod, because her body spasmed for a moment. Jinx tilted her head to the side, she went closer, and looked up at the Enforcer’s face, which was still closed. Jinx wondered if it was just some post mortem reaction, but then another spasm went through the Enforcer’s body, this one causing Jinx to flinch and step back, looking around as it checking if anyone else were around to see what she was seeing. Jinx then moved closer, and spoke in a tentative voice:
“Uh, Hey, cupcake,…you still there?”
Jinx heard the faintest sound from the piltie, and saw that same spasm, only it wasn’t as big. And she could hear the piltie slowly breathing, and then saw her hands move, as if trying to break free of the restraints. She was alive! Oh, that was a relief, Jinx hated getting rid of bodies. And she had plans for the piltie. She then saw the Enforcer was slowly coming to, as she groggily raised her head, her hair falling in front to cover her face. For a moment, Jinx hesitated, unsure of seeing what the piltie looked like. The only sound the piltie was making was her heavy breathing and some grunting. She was still strapped to the table in the standing up position. Jinx looked up and saw that the Enforcer seemed to be looking in her directly. Slowly, Jinx unholstered her gun, ready to use it if she saw something that freaked her out. She used her other hand to slowly push the Enforcer’s matted hair from her face.
A smile soon appeared on Jinx’s face, as she looked at the eyes staring back at her. Oh, they looked so much better now! Jinx happily put away her gun and leaned up with a leering grin.
“So… are you ready to help the people of Zaun?…. to REALLY help them?”
The Enforcer said nothing, looking confused for a moment, but then her expression slowly changed, giving Jinx the answer she wanted. Jinx’ blinked for a moment in surprise, but then let out a cackle, her giggle echoed throughout the deserted lab as she leaned forward to tell the new and improved piltie what she had planned for her.
