Always Welcome

The Gerudo sun was a relentless bully, but Aveil didn't mind. In fact, she welcomed the warmth on her skin as she stood on the balcony overlooking the fortress courtyard. At six months pregnant, she was a spectacle. Her Gerudo uniform had been let out at the seams, and her once-flat stomach now formed a proud, round arc.

"Enjoying the view, Aveil?" her friend and fellow guard, Nabooru, asked, leaning against the railing beside her.

Aveil sighed contentedly, patting her belly. "I am. It's a beautiful day for being gloriously, unapologetically pregnant."

Nabooru snorted. "You're the only one I know who's this cheerful about it. Most of the girls complain about their backs and their ankles."

"What's there to complain about?" Aveil said, her eyes gleaming with mischief. "I'm carrying a legend. A scandal. The cutest little hero to ever sneak into our fortress."

Nabooru rolled her eyes, but she was smiling. "You're still going on about that? The nine-year-old?"

"He wasn't just any nine-year-old, he was Link," Aveil declared, as if that explained everything. "And he had this look in his eyes... like a startled little bunny that was also secretly a tiger. It was irresistible."

"Irresistible enough to forget basic contraception, apparently," Nabooru teased.

"Details, details," Aveil waved away. "The point is, I saw what I wanted and I took it. And now," she said, giving her belly another loving rub, "I have the proof. A permanent souvenir."

Just then, a commotion at the fortress gate caught their attention. A small figure in a green tunic was arguing with the guards at the entrance.

"But I have a card!" a familiar, high-pitched voice insisted. "See? It's official!"

Aveil's heart did a little flip. "Well, speak of the little devil," she murmured, a wide grin spreading across her face.

She pushed herself away from the railing and made her way down to the courtyard, her gait now a confident waddle. The guards at the gate, seeing her approach, snapped to attention.

"Lady Aveil," one of them said. "This... child claims to be a member."

"He is," Aveil said, her eyes fixed on the small boy who was now looking up at her with a mixture of awe and confusion. He'd grown a few inches, but he was still tiny. "He's with me. Let him through."

The guards stepped aside, and Link cautiously walked into the courtyard. He looked up at Aveil, his blue eyes wide.

"Hi," he said, his voice barely a squeak.

"Hello again, little hero," Aveil purred, kneeling down with some effort. "It's been a while. You've gotten taller."

"Yeah," Link said, his gaze flickering down to her very prominent belly. His brain, which was still very much a nine-year-old's brain, took a moment to connect the dots. His eyes widened in comprehension. "Whoa. Are you...?"

"I am," Aveil said proudly, placing her hands on her stomach. "And guess who's responsible?"

Link's jaw dropped. He pointed a shaky finger at himself. "Me?"

"You, and your surprisingly heroic performance," Aveil confirmed with a wink. "Turns out you're not just cute, you're also... potent."

Link's face turned a shade of red that rivaled the Gerudo's uniforms. "But... how? I thought... I didn't know that's how it worked!"

"Surprise!" Aveil said, laughing. She took his hand and placed it on her stomach. "Feel that? That's our little scandal in there. Kicking up a storm this morning, too."

Link stood frozen, his hand pressed against the firm, warm curve of her belly. He could feel a faint, rhythmic thump from within. It was the most bizarre, surreal moment of his young life.

"Is... is it going to be a Gerudo?" he asked, his voice full of wonder.

"Probably," Aveil said. "With my luck, she'll have your pointy ears and your knack for getting into trouble." She stood up and ruffled his hair. "Don't look so terrified. You should be proud! You're going to be a father."

"A father?" Link repeated, the word feeling foreign and enormous in his mouth. "But I'm not even allowed to stay up past sunset!"

Aveil just laughed, a deep, booming sound that made several other guards turn their heads. "Details. You're a father in spirit. In deed, you were definitely a father."

She looked down at him, her expression softening. "Don't worry about it, Link. I've got this. I'm a Gerudo warrior, I can handle raising a kid. But I just had to let you know. You're the father of my child, the little cutie who knocked up the fortress's best guard."

Link was still processing, his mind a whirlwind of shock, pride, and utter confusion. "So... does this mean I don't have to sneak in anymore?"

Aveil threw her head back and laughed. "Oh, you definitely don't have to sneak in anymore. You've got a permanent invitation, little dad."

She watched as he continued to stare at her stomach, a slow, goofy smile finally replacing his shocked expression. He might not understand the full gravity of it, but he knew one thing for sure: his trip to the Gerudo Fortress had turned out to be a lot more interesting than he ever could have planned.
