Chapter
20: Edwinna’s Return
It was nearly mid afternoon when
Malcus and Alyssa finally emerged from their suite to travel back to Balmora.
They walked slowly, leisurely, and when they came to the Imperial Mages Guild
Alyssa clung to him tightly.
“I don’t want this day to end,” she
confessed, knowing that indeed it must.
“I know. I don’t want that any
more than you do,” he told her, running his hands through her long hair
tenderly. He smiled, noting that it was still tangled from their previous
night’s exertions.
“I have some business to take care
of in the city today. But I will come and visit you again soon. I promise,”
he said, turning her chin up to face him as he bent down to kiss her. She knew
it was true. Kissing her hands softly in farewell, soon he was off,
disappearing quickly into the crowd. Alyssa was alone once more.

“Ah! There you are. I was
beginning to wonder. You must’ve had quite a night of it with that man of
yours. The afternoon is nearly over,” laughed Erranil when Alyssa returned to
Ald’ruhn. She managed a slight smile at the grinning Altmer, feeling suddenly
self-conscious. She wanted to escape to her room before she was questioned
further. Her body felt strange and wonderful, like she had somehow been
transformed. Ghostly feelings played over her senses, making it feel as though
she were reliving each passionate touch. She wanted to be alone to experience
these things in private.
Entering her room, she shut the
door quietly and turned to her mirror. Her hair was a mess and her dress
needed to be changed. She slipped the dress off over her head and hung it in
the closet. Lying back on her bed, she set about to brushing her tangled hair.
She closed her eyes, smiling as she allowed the sensations she was feeling to wash
calmly over her like waves upon the sand.
She had been resting only a few
minutes when she heard a familiar voice ringing from inside the halls. She
felt the guild come to life as footsteps sounded past her door. Edwinna was
back. She knew it. Alyssa threw on a simple robe and hurried down the
stairs. Her sister’s face was glowing with excitement.
“Oh, Gnisis was simply marvelous!”
she exclaimed breathlessly, “I don’t know how I ever convinced myself to
leave!” The entire guild was gathered around her as she set her bags on the
ground. She was wearing the same deep purple dress with the seductively
plunging neckline as she had on when she left the guild, although Alyssa noted
that she had forgotten to put on the matching necklace.
“Did Baladas translate your books?”
asked Vala curiously.
“Hmm? Oh yes! Yes he did,” she
beamed, “And they held such fascinating stories within them… from what we could
make out anyway. Baladas even taught me a bit of the old Dwemeris language so
that I can read a little myself now. Of course, I’m not as good as he is yet,
but after all he’s been doing this for centuries longer than I have. He’s
simply the most amazing man!” Alyssa noted that Anarenen’s eyes narrowed, but
his smile remained as pleasant as ever.
“Of course I’ll have to go back
soon; we simply make the most wonderful team together. I’ve given him copies
of all my experimental notes and excavation reports – well, the ones he hadn’t
already acquired at any rate. I’m so pleased to have met someone who really
shares my love of Dwemer scholarship. Speaking of which, have any more reports
from Nchuleftingth arrived while I was
away?” she asked curiously, perking up at the thought.
“Yess. I have them here,” answered Heem-La, reaching into his robes to
hand Edwinna a thick packet of papers.
“Excellent! I’ll need to have copies of these made. I can’t wait to
read them! Anarenen, did you finish your experiements with the scrap metal?”
she asked excitedly, flipping through the pages in front of her with a smile.
“Ah… actually I ran into a bit of a problem with that,” he confessed.
She looked up, eyeing him curiously. He shifted his weight, taking a deep
breath before continuing.
“See, I accidentally managed to
overheat my calcinator, which had several unfortunate side effects. Not the
least of which is that all of the metal is mixed up, and despite my best
efforts I cannot tell which is which. To make matters worse, some of the
pieces have melted together,” he said, biting his lip, “I did, however, with Alyssa’s
assistance, manage to replace the calcinator with one of much higher quality.”
Edwinna glared up at him, her eyes narrowing.
“How could you?! You knew how
important this was to me! It will take years to collect and sort that much
scrap metal again! You should have been considerably more careful,” she
scolded, gathering her things together in a huff as she hurried up the stairs
towards the room the two shared.
“Wait… was that… Telvanni bug musk
she was wearing?” asked Orrent curiously as his headmistress left the room.
Anarenen stared at him wide eyed.
“Telvanni bug musk?” he asked
incredulously, “Are you serious?”
“You mean you can’t smell it?”
Orrent asked, crossing his arms defiantly.
“It’s definitely bug musk,”
remarked Tanar, who was usually silent during guild meetings, “I have a few
bottles of it in my quarters – I find it helps keep my husband’s wandering eye
fixed solely on me.” She smiled, her glowing pink eyes scanning the surprised
faces around her. Heem-La hissed, turning to slink up the stairs and retire to
his quarters. He had little interest in guild gossip preferred to stay out of
it. Anarenen bit his lip as Erranil took his hand soothingly. He made no
motion to back away, the color once again draining from his copper eyes. Suddenly
Edwinna returned.
“Oh! I nearly forgot to ask. Did
anything else happen of interest while I was away? I’d just as soon get
business out of the way so I can read over these reports,” she asked, emerging
from her quarters. Erranil glared at her, but she did not notice. She was far
too busy looking over the papers in front of her to notice any of them. When
no one answered, she looked up.
“Where’s Heem-La?” she asked,
looking confused.
“He returned to his quarters,”
Orrent told her.
“Hmm. I’ll have to go find him
then,” she replied, setting her papers aside for the moment, “I want to make
sure everything is in order in the event that I decide to leave again. From
the look of things, as far as I can tell everything’s fine. Unless any of you
would like to tell me differently?”
“Well then, why don’t you tell us
why you’re drenched in Telvanni bug musk?” asked Erranil suddenly. Edwinna
stopped in her tracks, looking a little confused.
“Telvanni bug musk?” she asked,
pausing to think. Many pairs of eyes focused intently on her reaction.
Suddenly she laughed, as though suddenly remembering.
“Oh! Baladas and I went down to
the Gnisis egg mine a few days ago. It’s right next to his tower. You see, it
seems as though the miners there broke through a patch of earth and
accidentally uncovered an ancient Dwemer ruin, which has up to this point been
totally unexplored! It was fascinating! I’d almost forgotten how exciting it
is to be out in the field, walking the paths of the Dwarves myself instead of merely
reading about their culture in books. I should really take more time to get
out more often. It was breathtaking,” she smiled, lost in thought, “The ruins
were superb. Baladas is simply the most amazing mer. He has the most
intriguing theories regarding the disappearance of the dwarves. And he was
such a perfect gentlemer. I’m only sorry I hadn’t met him sooner. For
example, he believes that the Dwemer found a way to translate the sacred from
the profane and experiments in anti-creation removed them from the Mundus. The
Dwemer then retreated behind math, color, and the active principle.
Fascinating! I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it myself.” She smiled
again, clearly lost in thought.
“But, um, why do you need Telvanni
bug musk to explore a ruin?” asked Orrent, clearly confused. He wasn’t the
only one.
“Yes, explain why you needed the
seductive attire and alluring scent to explore an abandoned ruin… alone, with
Baladas?” asked Erranil accusingly.
“Hmm? Oh. Yes. Well. The miners
weren’t exactly going to just let us waltz right in there and explore. They
didn’t care who either one of us were – they had the whole place blocked off to
everyone, even scholars and archaeologists. The nerve! But a little
persuasion goes a long way,” she smiled with a wink.
“Wait… what kind of persuasion?”
asked Anarenen. She looked surprised.
“Nothing immodest, if that’s what
you’re implying,” she replied, a hint of annoyance in her voice. She placed
both her hands on her hips, still clutching the thick pile of reports.
“So you claim that you weren’t
lovers with Baladas while you two were locked away in his tower alone
together? Is that right? You mean to tell us that you were dressed in your
finest, enjoying the luxurious riches of Telvanni society isolated from the
rest of the world, in the arms of an ancient wizard, this so-called ‘amazing
man’ you rave about, and you two were not lovers?” asked Erranil accusingly.
Edwinna’s jaw dropped and her grey eyes glowered with menacing rage. Suddenly
she exploded.
“How dare you!” she yelled, “My
personal life is none of your concern and if you know what’s best for you, you
shall stay well away from it! Don’t think you cannot easily be replaced. I’m
sick to death of your Altmer superiority complex – you may be more than twice
as old as I am, but I’m already more than twice the mage you will ever be!
Furthermore, I’m your superior, and you would be wise to remember it!” With
that, Edwinna stormed off to her quarters, grabbing her reports as she
disappeared inside, leaving the other guild members speechless.
“You would do well to take up the
other offer I told you about,” Erranil whispered to Anarenen softly. He looked
into her green eyes, his own nearly lifeless, and smiled. But his smile was
empty. Then, taking a deep breath, he tore his hand away from Erranil’s grasp
and followed Edwinna up the stairs, disappearing into their shared quarters.
