The ride back to the city was uneventful, which the dunmer thought was very unusual. Most of the time she had to contend with marauders or a few straggling daedra left over from the Oblivion Crisis. Even the wildlife left her alone for once. Making good time she arrived back at the city in the late afternoon, stabled Shadowmere and made the short walk over to Dareloth’s Garden. She wouldn’t begin training with the younger thieves until at least sunset, so she entered the house to have a light snack of bread, cheese, and apples. She felt sleepy suddenly, and started nodding off a bit as the sun descended towards the trees. She thought she should go up to her bedroom, take a nap before her training session that night. That was when Armand found her. “Master Thief,” he greeted her, his expression grave, “I have some bad news for you. Laurian has been taken for questioning by the guards and Seval. I don’t know the whole story, but I can tell you that Seval was still trying to find the accomplice from that night. We thought you had covered your tracks well enough, but some of the soldiers in the area remembered Laurian asking specifically about Seval’s estate, and since she has been spotted frequenting the Waterfront, they have connected her with the Guild.” Gwen’s mind was racing. I thought Seval was going to drop it! was her first thought, followed by, I will get her out of this! “The guards couldn’t be paid off this time? And what about the Magistrates?” “I’m sorry Gwen, I couldn’t persuade the guards or the Magistrates with coin this time, Seval must have bought some favor with them. Is there anything you can do?” This was very unusual for Armand, he never sounded this helpless or forlorn. Something about the room seemed hazy, too, something she couldn’t quite put her finger on. “Maybe he hired a mercenary crew, but either way, I have to find her, get her cleared.” Gwen stood up, feeling wobbly and a little floaty. She ran to the door, throwing her exhaustion away. She opened it to a most amazing and frightening sight. There was Mehrunes Dagon, in all his tall and ugly glory, bearing down over the waterfront. “Mehrunes Dagon is back!” she screamed, flinging the door shut and looking to Armand for guidance. “Oh him?” Armand shrugged and walked over to the door, opening it in a nonchalant manner. “He’s here to see the Emperor of course. Well, can’t get an audience these days, what with being a spectre and all. But what are you gonna do, am I right?” he asked, laughing. Gwen knew this couldn’t be real. I MUST be dreaming, she thought fiercely. I fell asleep at the table, and I’ll wake up and be fine. I’ll have a big laugh about it with the other guild members and everything will be ok. She tried to force her mind awake, especially after walking outside to the find the unicorn that Hircine had her unjustly slay was outside, asking her to go on a magical journey to Candy Mountain. She politely declined, then tried to push herself into the waking world once more. Mehrunes didn’t bother her a bit, just looked about with a sad expression on his face. At least, she thought it was a sad expression for a giant, evil daedra, but couldn’t really tell. Laurian came running up then, surprising Gwen out of her need to awaken. “Gwen, we are in a dream world, you and I NEED to wake up!” Laurian screamed. I think Seval has done something to put us both here. I don’t see who else could have.” Her eyes began to tear up then, and Gwen tried to comfort her, as well as find out if she was actually real. “Laurian, how can I be sure you are not part of this dream world? And did you actually get taken by Seval here? Armand told me you did when I…came here. How do you think we got here, anyway? This couldn’t be a trick because of what happened with Vile, could it?” “I don’t know,” the younger woman sniffed, “I just want to wake up. I’ve been seeing…odd…and terrible things.” She motioned to the giant daedra still standing over them, who was attempting to tear the top off of the tower at the middle of the Imperial City. “I’ve heard of items that can take a person into dreamscapes, even into paintings,” she said, remembering her foray into the world of art to help a lost painter. “If one of these got planted on us, or maybe…in the guild house…” she trailed off, her head spinning in an attempt to think of who or what had put them there. “Well, we won’t find anything out just standing here, will we? We need to investigate and think of everything that led up to this moment. You were here first, I presume? Since Armand was talking about you when I arrived. This must be a dreamscape, because I’m sure everything up until this point was real. Did you feel sleepy right before you came here? Were you in the house?” “Yes, I was. I was actually in the front near the table, looking over some documents, when it felt as though a wave of exhaustion washed over me. I don’t remember actually falling to sleep, however,” the woman finished, trying to think of where to next. “We can see if anyone else is in here, from the real world I mean,” Gwen replied, gesturing to Armand who was handing freshly picked flowers up to Mehrunes, who had given up on destroying the tower for the moment. “If only we had more to go on, or how to get in touch with the real world.” Laughter pealed in the sky around them. Gwen looked to the daedra to see if the noise had come from him, but was amazed to see the giant looking around in confusion as well. The voice that boomed next was familiar, but she couldn’t place it. “You, Champion, Hero, will NEVER escape!” Shivers ran down her spine. “I will not give in to you, whoever you are!” Gwen screamed up at the empty sky around her. “I will find a way, you coward. Come out and show yourself.” Silence was her only reply. “Oh, you will find a way,” a familiar looking creature spoke. It was a guar, a creature from Morrowind. “I will make sure of it.”
