Head back to chapter six for an explanation of the A and B path system.
Chapter 14 (A) – Preparations for the HuntJennifer was visibly shaken by the news. Lara's announcement of her plan to wipe out the bandits only escalated the sweet raven-haired woman's anxiety further, but it couldn't be helped. The only way either of their fears would be allayed was to make sure that none of the lawless men remained to harm them or the rest of the wolf pack.
Over the next few days Lara reconnoitred the gang's base. While she had a good idea of its location and arrangement due to her brief prior visit, she nevertheless took the precaution to determine a number of things. First and foremost, she had to figure out if the group had any more lookouts or regular patrols. Right now she held the element of surprise and she wasn't about to get spotted before she even made it to their camp. Most importantly, she needed to know how many men she was dealing with. While she may have taken out two of them in a single encounter Lara knew realistically that taking on one at a time would give her the best chance to achieve both her lethal goal and make it back alive.
She surveyed the base and surrounding areas by herself, making sure not to be seen. It was a painstaking process - creeping around to find thick foliage, high stone ridges, tree branches and other vantage points that could completely conceal her. When she did find ideal spots, she would hide there for several hours at a time at different periods of the day to try to pick up any patterns of movement and listen for any useful info being spoken.
As she spent that great deal of time alone with the forest and the oblivious men, Lara gave a lot of thought to alternate non-violent methods of getting rid of gang. She briefly considered a peaceful settlement but quickly threw out the notion. After she'd killed two of their group she doubted they would agree to such a thing, not that she would trust them to honour any truce. She then pondered some sort of show of force, perhaps by dumping the corpse of their latest fallen comrade on their doorstep. She concluded that this would just likely provoke them into an aggressive response and that she and the wolf pack were not equipped to take on a troupe of well-armed men. The more she brainstormed different plans, the more she realised that there really was no sure-fire alternative. The only way to guarantee her pack's safety was to put these men down.
Though her mind was begrudgingly made up, that didn't stop her conscience gnawing at her. At first she wondered if not all of the bandits were dangerous brutes - maybe some of them were good men who had simply found themselves caught in a bad group out of necessity to survive. After only a few hours of observing and listening to them she soon gave up on that notion. She was shocked and sickened by their conversations which were almost constantly centred around hatred and other base things. A main topic was their missing member. Many of them seemed convinced that Lara was responsible, what with her having previously taken out their leader and scout. They cursed her with vile swear-filled screeds, vowing to torture, rape and kill her in all manners of horrific ways should they find her again. No horrid talking point seemed to be off-topic though, with them gleefully sharing horrendous tales of their past lives. One man, perhaps attempting to work his way up the social ladder through fear, boasted more than once about how he had murdered his old girlfriend when he found out that she had been cheating on him. The group's new leader, named Helmsley, was probably the nastiest piece of work of all of them. This greasy and unsettling sicko admitted how he had 'done business' with a child sex slave ring, proudly regaling his minions with graphic detail of his encounter with an eight year old girl.
Lara became sick to her stomach listening to their reprehensible conversations and stories, nearly blowing her cover more than once as she had to prevent herself from throwing up. Eventually, she concluded that there was not a single redeeming feature among the men, not even the slightest hint of human decency. She theorised that they must be outlaws or pirates who had been shipwrecked here together, as not one even one of them could've passed for a civilised and decent member of regular society, even through deception. Not a single one of them appeared to be worth saving.
After four long days of sneaking around and spying, Lara concluded that there were seven men altogether. It was a smaller number than she expected, which improved her chances of success. However, she knew that the element of surprise would be essential, as a direct assault would be foolhardy even if she somehow became a crack shot with her pistols and bow. The surest approach would be to try and pick them off quietly one at a time and only resort to her guns if she was detected.
Lara decided that she wasn't going to tell Jennifer when she was heading out on her mission until the day of the operation came, as she didn't want her worrying any more than necessary. However, the first morning in which Lara didn't go out scouting was when she must have realised that today was the day. Lara slept in late and took a few things out to the forest clearing. Jennifer found her just before midday practising her archery skills using trees for targets. She had tied her hair up in a ponytail and put on her trousers, which had been sitting clean and unused in the cave ever since she had joined the pack. Lara wanted to get used to the heft and position of her weapons on her person, as this garment was the only way that she could carry them around when she headed out later. Jennifer found the sight of her beloved pack sister wearing an item of clothing somehow a little perverse after the days upon days they'd been naked around each other.
The raven-haired woman stood silently and undetected as the topless Lara launched an arrow into a tree at a distance of about 20 metres. The brunette retrieved another arrow from the quiver slung on her back, nocked it properly in her bow, then skill fully fired it into a different tree about 30 metres away.
'You're good with that.' Jennifer said, standing with her hands clasped over her belly.
Lara briefly glanced over her shoulder at her pack sister, then nocked the last arrow from her quiver. Not wanting to flub her next shot in front of Jennifer, she took aim and a nearer thicker tree and let loose, successfully piercing the bark with the arrow head.
'I just wish I could practice more with my guns.' She then replied.
She proceeded to sling her weapon over one naked shoulder and walk over to her pierced targets to retrieve the eight arrows. Given the proven lethality of her pistols she wished they had reusable ammunition instead of this bow.
Jennifer didn't say anything until Lara had just tugged lose the sixth arrow from its bark resting place.
'You're going today, aren't you?' She asked, some what solemnly.
Lara briefly looked back at the older woman as she continued recovering arrows, trying not to let the reluctance and annoyance show upon her face. She had been hoping that she could've told Jennifer mere minutes before she left.
'I was planning to, yeah.' Lara eventually replied somewhat grimly as he walked back towards her pack sister with her quiver full once again.
Jennifer suspected as much but her heart still sank upon hearing the confirmation. She had made her feelings perfectly clear on Lara's plans over the last few days. However, for as vehemently against the mission as she was, she could not think of any safe alternatives that would guarantee the pack's permanent safety.
Lara expected the raven-haired beauty to express her concerns once again, but that didn't happen. She looked deflated and like she could start crying at any second. However, after a few seconds she recomposed herself.
'I thought of something that might help.'
Jennifer had a tender, free-spirited soul and neither woman could see her coping with the grim job at hand. Lara had never once factored her into her plan, not even in some sort of support role. Still, Jennifer was desperate to do something, even if it was just to make herself feel less helpless about the whole situation.
The older woman showed Lara a new spot in the forest. Here, the mud was of a certain composure that when mixed with the right amount of water it would stick to and then harden upon surfaces. Jennifer had literally stumbled across a deposit of it on one rainy afternoon. In the last few days she had figured that Lara could use it on her body as a form of camouflage. Once again, the brunette was impressed by the former American's resourcefulness. Though she might not have been as tough and strong as she was, Jennifer had great initiative and a deep thoughtfulness that had not only kept her alive but also made her wonderful to live with.
Late in the afternoon, Lara fully suited up in preparation for her mission. In addition to her calf-length trousers, boots and hair tie, she also donned her brassiere and tank top. She would have loved a sturdy sports bra about now but any sort of support and protection was welcome. She dropped one handgun each into her left and right trouser pockets, primed to be pulled out at a second's notice. She carefully slipped the large hunting knife into her right too and slung the bow and quiver of arrows over her shoulders. She was keenly aware of the irony of the moment; dressing in items crafted by modern society as she was ostensibly about revert to savagery, all after having peacefully lived in the wild for weeks now.
She and Jennifer returned to the deposit of special mud, bringing as many containers of water as they could. They drenched the one patch with the liquid, causing it to dampen and soften. Then, they started to paint it all over Lara's exposed skin, moving fairly quickly before the almost clay-like substance could thicken and dry. Given any other situation, the brunette would have found the act of Jennifer rubbing her various body parts arousing. Unfortunately, she had to keep her mind on the critical mission ahead. The pair did their best to cover every spot of the her Caucasian flesh with the chocolatey brown substance. In combination with her similarly coloured boots and trousers and her pale green tank top, she looked convincingly camouflaged for a typical forest backdrop.
The two women stopped off at the den before Lara moved out. She said goodbye to the wolves, who were mostly lounging around napping. She wondered if they had any clue what she was about to do, or if they'd truly miss her if she never came back. The alpha of the pack wasn't present which was lucky - if any of them was going to disrupt her departure it would be him, likely purely to assert some dominance.
After a brief look around the cave, as if surveying for this last time, Lara and pack sister stepped back outside. The well-armed and camouflaged brunette slowly turned to face the still-naked Jennifer. Lara didn't want to look into her worried face as it pained her to see her suffering and scared. She fought back her own rising feelings of sadness and fear by focusing on business. She pulled the handgun from her right pocket and placed it into one of Jennifer's hands.
'Keep this... just in case I fail.' Lara said firmly.
Jennifer looked down at the heavy metallic object her pack sister was pressing into her palm. Lara could see that the despair in her eyes had been partly replaced by a new confusion.
'I know you'd never want to use such a thing,' Lara continued. 'but if the time comes you might need to in order to survive. Keep it with you at all times and remember to take the safety off when you intend to use it.'
Jennifer nodded meekly. Her normally tranquil hazel eyes started to quiver and water. Lara hated having to deliver these tough words to her but she spoke them in an authoritative and comforting way as possible.
'Take some of the boys with you whenever you go out. They've taken out one of those men before so they'll hopefully do it again if attacked. There's no nice way of saying this... but remember there's only one of you and you're the most important member of the pack. As much as I love them, your life should always take priority, got it?'
'Yeah.' Jennifer replied solemnly.
Lara took her pack sister gently by the shoulders and looked her dead in the eyes.
'If I'm not back by midday tomorrow do not come looking for me under any circumstances, okay?'
Jennifer's lips started to tremble as pooling tear-drops overflowed down her cheeks. Lara took her into a firm hug, now unable to hold back her own feelings.
'Promise me!' She almost shouted, tears rolling down her own face as Jennifer began sobbing into her shoulder. 'Don't do anything to put yourself at risk!'
Her sister didn't reply, instead continuing to softly but uncontrollably weep. Lara couldn't leave her scared and vulnerable like this, but she had to.
Slowly, she pulled back from the embrace, holding Jennifer by the shoulders again. Looking at her distraught face, she proceeded to wipe some of the tears away from her sister's cheeks, being careful not to smear her camouflage upon her pink flesh. Jennifer's watery eyes locked with Lara's matching hazel orbs again. For some reason, she managed a short exhalation of levity through her whimpering. Mirroring what Lara did to here, she reached a hand up and brushed away the tears from the brunette's cheeks.
'You'd better go or your camouflage is going to wash off.' She said as a smile attempted to pierce her sadness.
Lara returned the expression before moving in and placing a soft and sweet kiss upon Jennifer's lips. She then pulled away, bravely refraining from looking back, as she began to march onward. Jennifer watched, the silver gun still in her hand, as her warrior-like sister strode off down the rock-walled passageway. A cool breeze blew over her, rustling through her long black hair. After a few seconds, Lara was gone.
