**Installment 20**
Kattath waited outside the dilapidated building for Nathavin. She had come to the building to see how things were progressing. There were no sounds of fighting or arguing, that was a good sign. The only sound she could detect was the sound of someone sleeping, but her ears only detected one person. She opened her senses and found the whitish pink aura that was Caellia. Kattath stretched her senses further, but could find no hint of Nathavin. Sighing, she prepared to wait for him.

Asadar slammed his hands down on the war table in absolute fury. How dare Nathavin interfere? The cursed dark elf was nothing but trouble! He reached out and threw a bowl of fruit to the ground in blind anger. He would have Caellia! He calmed himself as he attempted to think rationally. Caellia was a light elf. She had no knowledge of the history he knew. Light elves and dark elves were bitter enemies. She would run from Nathavin as surely as she had run from him. All he had to do, was find a way to force her hand to come back to him for protection, but how? He called for his top advisors, never noticing the discontented looks they shot his way.

Nathavin emerged from the forest to see Kattath standing next to a tree trunk and casually picking off the remaining members of the pitiful mahum tribe. She noticed him and made her way over. “Kattath, why are you here?”
Kattath sucked in a shaky breath; he was not pleased to see her. She opened her gift of sight to him. His aura was a furious purple shot through with gold streamers. No he wasn’t pleased at all. Gathering her courage she prepared herself for the worst should it come, “I’ve come to tell you that our forces tracked Asadar back to his castle.” She paused cautiously as his eyes narrowed dangerously. “When did you intend on rejoining our forces and heading back to Goddard?” Her eyes widened impossibly as she heard the bowstring being released seconds before seeing the arrow graze past Nathavin’s shoulder. Her eyes swung in the direction the arrow had come from and was met with Caellia’s ice blue eyes. She began to chant a spell aimed at Caellia when her hands were knocked down to her side by Nathavin.
“No! I will deal with this on my own. Gather our troops and head back to the castle.” His voice dropped to a deadly low level, “I will deal with her.”
“As you wish, my Lord.” Kattath dropped back to the formal way of addressing him in deference to his anger. She watched his aura as it rapidly shifted colors, ranging from dangerous anger to confused attraction. Her gaze was drawn to Caellia as she began to speak. Caellia’s aura was all one color, a brilliant blazing white, the color of protection and purity. And she was absolutely livid. Kattath shifted her gaze from one to the other, whatever was going to happen wasn’t going to be good and she backed away from them. However, she still stayed where she could watch the two unnoticed.
Caellia glared icily at Nathavin, she had used several different defensive magic abilities on herself before challenging him so she would stand a better chance against him. The bow was still uncomfortable in her hand, but it was becoming easier to use since she had killed so many of the mahum tribe the day before and had gotten some good practice with it although she was still not perfect with it. “You will not take me prisoner again Nathavin. Never will you hold another light elf against their will.” Her voice shook with the strength of her conviction.
Nathavin looked her over, she was angry yet calm. She was not allowing her emotions to fight for her, which was good for a warrior. He stepped forward, testing her limits. He paused mid step as he watched a shimmering twinkle of white light with golden streamers swirl around the arrowhead as a white magic stone was placed on the arrow. He hadn’t known she had grabbed the fallen hawk eyes magic stones. This made the situation a bit different. “Do you really want to fight me Caellia?” His voice was hard as he prepared his own bow.
“I want to be set free so I can see to my people’s defense. I will fight you if I must to gain that freedom.” She softened her voice slightly as she tried to reason with him, “Nathavin surely you can see that Goryn only meant for you to run Asadar off so that I could escape back to my homeland. You’ve done that. Your vow to him has been fulfilled. I’m sure that if he were still here he’d release you from it.” She was proud that her voice didn’t crack. She missed Goryn terribly.
“My vow Princess was to protect you from Asadar. It did not include stipulations. Since I am the one he asked, it is my interpretation of the vow that matters.” He brought his bow up to firing level. “Drop the bow or I will force you to.”
“Why won’t you listen to reason?” Caellia all but screamed. She released the arrow and watched as it exploded in a brilliant display of gold streamers and white dust on Nathavin’s chest.
“That just cost you any chance at freedom Caellia. Not that I would’ve set you free anyhow.” He growled out as he fired his own arrow.
The two continued to fire rapidly at one another, neither backing down as Kattath watched. At irregular intervals one of them would fire two arrows in rapid succession as golden arcs of power surrounded them as they increased their firing speed to accommodate for two arrows. Even though Nathavin took care to only graze her so as not to injure her severely, it soon became painfully obvious that Caellia was losing badly. She couldn’t aim properly with the unfamiliar bow and she simply did not have the ability hold the large, heavy bow up for long periods of time. She fell to the ground with a distraught cry as her arm gave way under the massive bow.
Nathavin lowered his bow and stalked over to her. “Get up Caellia.”
Caellia looked up at him, she hated him! She stood up and gave him a frosty look, breathing hard from her exertions. She hissed when he snatched the bow from her nearly numb hands and casually tossed it to Kattath. Her blood froze at his next words.
“Go inside Caellia. This isn’t over.” His face gave away no emotions as he stared into her blue eyes. “Kattath, take the bow and head back, send someone here with my strider, they are to leave it here then head back to camp. Once that is done, gather our forces and head back to Goddard.”
Kattath emerged from her hidden position and picked the bow up, “Will you be traveling with us to Goddard?”
“No, we will head back alone.” His eyes never left Caellia’s, taking note of her slight shiver when he’d announced that the two of them would be traveling back alone.
“I will not travel alone with you Nathavin!”
“I said go inside! My patience wears thin girl!” He gripped her upper left arm with bruising force and turned her around to face the doorway of the building and gave her a sharp shove inside the door.
“Nathavin,” Kattath quietly spoke, “remember my words. She will not trust you if you continue to harm her.”
Nathavin strode to Kattath, “Then what do you suggest I do?”
She frowned at his scathing question. “Treat her with a little more respect for starters.”
He thought of his attempts at that the previous night, she had wanted none of it. “She deserves none. She is a light elf. She is only a means to an end and I will not lower myself to treat her as an equal.” Nathavin forced himself to remember his original goal.
Kattath sighed to herself, back to this again. She tried another approach, “It will be less stressful if you at least give the appearance of it. She may lower her guard a bit and be more docile.”
“That elf will never be docile.” He muttered darkly.
Kattath couldn’t resist and grinned mischievously at him, “Then teach her how to be. Tame her Nathavin.” She laughed at the look she received.
“Why would I wish to do that?”
Kattath smirked at him, “Exactly.” She gave another laugh before becoming serious again, “I will do as you have requested. We will leave for Goddard no later than midday.” Nathavin merely nodded and turned back to the building, his mind already on other matters. Kattath watched him for a moment then turned and headed off to the camp.
Caellia paced the length of the building as she waited for Nathavin. She unconsciously rubbed the arrowhead pendant between her nervous fingers. Why did you have to leave me Goryn? She looked toward the heavens and blinked back unshed tears. Now was not the time to indulge in grieving. Her head whipped toward the door as Nathavin entered.
“You will never attack me again Caellia.” He began ominously, “I will not tolerate any further attempts at it. You have managed to fight well against me up to now because I have chosen to humor you. That stops now, I will no longer allow you to believe that you can stand against me and dare hope to defeat me. I will treat you as though you were my equal on the battlefield and I will show no mercy, nor remorse.” He glowered at her as he watched her tremble slightly. “You have no bow with which to fight me and I relieved you of your dagger last night.” He pulled her dagger out of the sheath strapped to his leg. “This will stay with me.”
Caellia sucked in a breath, she was defenseless! She backed away from him. There was a door at the back of the building. She could reach it before he could catch up to her. She knew she could. Her spell for swiftness hadn’t released yet, if she could get ahead of him, stay there and avoid drawing to much attention from the surrounding mahum tribe she might be able to escape.
Nathavin watched her closely. He knew of the back door and was curious if she’d attempt it. He grinned to himself as she turned and sprinted to the back of the building. Her spell would wear off eventually and she would have to stop to recast it. He pulled the green magic potions out; he however only had to drink these while running to keep his pace, no stopping to cast a spell. His grin grew wider, he could also slow her down, he had said that he would treat her the same as he would an equal on the battlefield. He downed a vial of potion and raced to catch her.
