Shin glanced at the Shilen Templar from the corner of his eye. He’d already taken care of Harant. Now it was time to take out Zarolin.
But he had to be careful. Harant, for all his bluster, had been a politician, not a fighter. Zarolin was the opposite. A skilled knight, Zarolin had built a fearsome reputation. He’d bested Nikvir, BaelAun, and even Nathavin in sporting duels.
The two of them made their way deeper into the caves, courtesy of Shin’s abilities. The caverns were home to some of the fabled creations of the giants. The strange stone creatures ambled around aimlessly, waiting for an unfortunate to wander into their midst.
It was tempting to simply allow his concealment spell to drop briefly, and then shadow just himself and allow the creatures to take Zarolin down. But that left to much to chance. Besides, he needed to ensure that there was no evidence left behind.
“How much further?” Zarolin asked as they turned a corner and went ever deeper. He didn’t like this. They were too far removed from anything and anyone. Shin had insisted that Nathavin had a secret in the caverns, a secret that would allow him to defeat the High Council. But, Shin said that Nathavin had requested he look at it to ensure that it would utterly destroy the army that the Council was raising against him.
He had his doubts, but he couldn’t risk not seeing whatever it might be. If Nathavin did have a secret that could defeat the Council, then it was his duty to see it and report his findings to the Council.
“Not much further.” Shin replied, keeping his answer purposely vague and unhelpful.
“This had better be worth it.” Zarolin muttered, feeling distinctly uneasy as he remembered that Shin was Nathavin’s go-to assassin. Shin was equally skilled with both swords and daggers, frequently using them interchangeably or even wielding one of each together. As the seconds ticked by, he grew ever more sure that Shin had orders to kill him.
As they rounded the next corner, Zarolin lunged forward ahead of Shin, pulling his sword from it’s scabbard and raising his shield. “There’s nothing down here!” He growled out.
“Well, I have to give you credit, you’re smarter than Harant was.” Shin replied nonchalantly, not even flinching.
“You killed Harant? What a waste of your oh so precious time. The fool knew nothing of value.” Zarolin smirked. “Nathavin must be slipping if he sent you after that pathetic fool.”
“He knew more than you think. A fighter he wasn’t, but his silvered tongue had crafted more allegiances than your sword.” Retorted Shin, his eyes narrowing as he caught the subtle movement of Zarolin’s muscles bunching.
As soon as Zarolin lunged forward, Shin side-stepped, his dagger flashing into his right hand as his left hand pulled his sword free. Circling one another, the two traded blows viciously, Shin staying away from Zarolin’s shield arm.
Dodging around to Zarolin’s left, Shin thrust the dagger into a weakened segment of Zarolin’s armor. The blade slid between the two plated segments and blood began pouring from the wound. Ripping the dagger out, Shin neatly dodged the sword that was whistling through the air toward his neck.
As Zarolin thrust his sword forward again, aiming for Shin’s stomach, Shin’s left hand snaked it’s way along the blade to Zarolin’s wrist and blocked the strike, knocking the sword to the side. Simultaneously, he’d reversed the grip on his dagger in his right hand and managed to swing it up and to the left, catching the inside of Zarolin’s left forearm. The dagger sliced cleanly and deeply into the flesh and Zarolin dropped his shield as nerves and tendons were severed.
Stepping closer to Zarolin, Shin never gave him a chance to recover. With the dagger still in a reverse grip, he followed through on his previous motion, bringing the dagger fully in front of his body, before yanking his arm back to the right. The blade tore into Zarolin’s unprotected throat, ripping it open in a left to right motion. Blood gushed forth and soaked the front of Shin’s armor.
Shin pushed the now lifeless body away from him with a light grunt. Renewing his spell of shadows, he began dragging Zarolin’s remains to the center of a large room filled with the giant stone creatures. Once he was positioned next to one of the creatures, he stopped extending the spell’s effects to the corpse and moved swiftly away.
The reaction was swift and expected. The large construct whirled around and began methodically crushing Zarolin’s corpse, alternating between stomping on it and swinging a large stone arm down. Several more of the creatures soon joined in.
Shin watched the creatures mutilate and maim the body impassively, not bothered in the slightest at the grim scene playing out in front of him. Only when there was no chance to identify the remains and the armor had been thoroughly destroyed did he turn and begin making his way out of the caverns.
The following trek to Narsell Lake was blessedly uneventful. He took his time to thoroughly bathe and clean his bloodied armor and his thoughts drifted to Starr, as they so often did. He’d been gone three months. Three, long, months. How was she coming along in her training?
Had she and Aleyel killed one another yet?
Had Nathavin killed them both? The thought of Nathavin being run ragged and driven insane by the two women caused him to laugh lowly.
Glancing upward, he wished that he could call Nathavin’s wyvern at will. It would make his travel back to the fortress so much quicker. Emerging from the water, he quickly redressed and began heading back.

Stepping into the protective walls of the fortress a week later, Shin was greeted with several nods from subordinates. One of the higher ranking members approached him. “Nathavin wishes to see you, immediately.” He indicated with a nod to the center of the fortress.
With a frown, Shin trudged toward the command center. Not bothering to knock, he swung the door open and strode in. “You wanted to see me?”
Glancing up from a stack of scrolls, Nathavin replied. “She’s made her first successful kill.”
Shin’s face split into a grin as he relaxed against the door.
Nathavin relayed how he’d presented the mission to her, and her successful completion of it despite her misgivings. “She will make a good assassin.” Nathavin said approvingly as he finished summing up his assessment of her.
Extending a scroll to Shin, he continued. “Here. These are procurement orders, for you and Starr.”
Coming away from the door, Shin took the document and read it. “Fenrirs?” He questioned.
Nodding Nathavin answered. “They are discreet, can fight when necessary, and can run down any horse or strider. I will need the two of you to be able to come and go from locations quickly.”
Changing subjects, Nathavin stated with understanding. “I imagine right now you’ll want to see Starr. I apologize that I had to cut your time with her short. For now, I have no further tasks that require your skills. You and she may go where you like, for now.”
Nodding, Shin swiftly turned and left to find Starr.
When he found her, she was training with Aleyel. The two were dueling fiercely, their daggers flashing brilliantly through the air. In a move so rapid that he could barely follow it, Starr threw Aleyel to the ground.
Not to be outdone, Aleyel rapidly regained her footing and began advancing on Starr, forcing her to backpedal several yards. Dropping down low, Starr swung her leg out, attempting to sweep Aleyel’s feet out from under her. But Aleyel merely jumped up, avoiding the attack.
But she wasn’t prepared for Starr to lunge upward at her as her upward momentum fell away and she began her descent back to the ground. Aleyel couldn’t dodge Starr’s outstretched hand and felt it collide with her throat. At the same time, she felt herself hurled through the air, Starr’s upward moment causing her to rotate in such a fashion that she crashed down to the ground on her back, with Starr landing on top of her, her hand wrapped around Aleyel’s throat. She also felt the sharp point of Starr’s dagger digging into her ribcage, right above her heart. Had it not been for the protective spells placed within the arena that prevented accidental deaths, she would’ve died at Starr’s hands.
Shin watched all of this with rapt attention. It was breathtaking to see Starr in a full attack. The combination her natural swiftness as a light elf, and the fierce attack style of dark elves, made for a truly dazzling display. His eyes swept over her as she stood and allowed Aleyel to stand.
Dark red silk combined with leather, the armor left little to the imagination. The matching boots rose high on her, protectively encasing her legs while accentuating them at the same time. The image was slightly marred when Starr seemed to remember herself and became self conscious, trying to tug the garment in such a way to cover more of herself.
“Stop that!” Barked Aleyel with an aggrieved sigh of annoyance. “As I’ve already said, the armor is designed this way on purpose. Properly wielded, your physical appeal is a very powerful weapon. And I will instruct you on just how to wield that weapon.” She caught sight of Shin and smirked playfully. “Or, Shin can instruct you on that if he’d prefer.”
Unable to help himself, Shin grinned wolfishly at Starr. “Oh, I wouldn’t mind that at all.”
