Starr glared at him, her mind filled with memories of the night they’d shared together. “I think not.” She intoned lowly, her chin raising in challenge as she felt her face flush. As Shin crossed into the training arena, she held her ground, gripping the dagger a bit more tightly and unconsciously shifting into a more defensive position.
Drawing nearer, his grin widened. She was more like the elf he’d met on the battlefield. Openly challenging, daring him to come closer. How could he not oblige her?
Keeping a small distance between them, he slowly circled around her. Starr’s gaze followed his every move. When he crossed behind her, she turned slightly, bringing him back into her line of sight.
Observing them silently, Aleyel sensed that something had changed between them. Previously, Shin wouldn’t have responded to her light teasing with a tease of his own. Instead, he would’ve scolded Aleyel while reassuring Starr.
But, he hadn’t. And now he was very obviously examining Starr in a very personal way, his eyes lingering on the way the armor accentuated her legs and ass. For her part, Starr’s face had taken on a light pink shade, indicative of embarrassment. But, she wasn’t cowering from him. Aleyel had seen other male’s gaze upon her in a similar fashion, and always Starr either cowered, or tried to cover up. But not this time.
Meanwhile, Shin continued appraising Starr. He feigned an attack, curious to see her reaction.
Moving swiftly, Starr dodged his mock attack, ducking under his outstretched arm while leaping away. She didn’t follow up with an attack of her own, however.
“You’ve gotten quicker.” Shin said through an approving laugh. Turning to Aleyel, he informed her that Nathavin had given Starr permission to leave, at his discretion.
Nodding, Aleyel spoke to Starr. “Remember what I taught you and make sure you practice.” She turned to Shin. “I’m holding you responsible for ensuring that she gets adequate practice.” Speaking in dark elven, she reminded him. “Nathavin will have both of our hides if she’s not properly trained for the overthrow.”
Shin’s face turned serious for a moment. “I assure you, she will have plenty of practice.” He had no idea how true his statement would later be.
As Aleyel and the others left the arena, Starr found herself once again alone with Shin. “Where are we going?” She asked, sheathing her dagger. “Are we going back to the waterfall hideaway?”
Shaking his head, he turned and began making his way to the large kennels that housed the fenrirs. “No. I’ve somewhere else in mind. Actually, I have two places in mind. You can choose which you’d prefer.”
Starr’s lips pursed tightly, refraining from a comment that she knew would not be beneficial to either of them. “And they are?”
“We can go to either Schuttgart, to a little hunting cabin that I know of. Or, we can go to one of the beaches near Heine.”
Starr shuddered at the thought of Schuttgart. It was a frozen wasteland. “Beach.” She said definitively. “It will take us nearly a month to get there though.”
“Not quite.” He replied, passing her one of the procurement papers to her. “Here, that one’s yours.”
Taking the parchment from him, she scanned over it quickly. “Fenrirs?”
“Yes, Nathavin wanted us to be able to move more quickly when necessary.”
Her mouth thinned unhappily at the implication. Nathavin was giving them the fenrirs so that they would be more effective assassins. “Wouldn’t horses be a bit quicker?” They’d now reached the kennels and she followed him inside.
Inside, they found two dwarves, one a stout male with a grizzled beard, and the other a petite looking girl with pigtails. The male took the orders and grunted something at the young girl, who giggled and then grabbed Starr by the hand and pulled her enthusiastically in the direction of a couple of large gates.
Shin followed them, answering. “Yes, they would be, however, they have their drawbacks.” As Starr’s gaze fell on the animal in the enclosure, she wondered what drawback’s a horse would have.
The dwarf girl watched the interaction between the large fenrir and the two elves next to her. The fenrir raised it’s head and looked at them, it’s nostrils flaring as it sniffed the air. Then, with a huff, the animal lowered it’s head and went back to sleeping. Not a good match. Tugging the light elf’s hand, she pulled her to another enclosure.
Again, the animal merely glanced at them and then went back to sleep. The third fenrir bared it’s fangs at Shin and growled threateningly. The dwarven girl banged on the gate and spoke to the animal fiercely in dwarvish, surprising Starr with how threatening she sounded. The fenrir closed it’s mouth with a snap, but continued glaring and growling.
“I want a horse.” Starr muttered as they moved away to yet another stall, not liking the idea of riding something that could turn around and eat her.
The grizzle bearded dwarf overheard her from his place where he was fixing a saddle. “No, yer don't. The bloomin' fenrirs are superior. A fenrir will lay dahn it's life for yer, it will fight ter it's own deaff ter protect yer. An 'orse will not, an 'orse will sacrifice yer ter save itself.” He stared at her hard. “And even fough an 'orse is faster, a fenrir can still use it's nose. Wiv it's nose, right, it can follow an 'orse easily wivout tirin'. An 'orse can only run so fast for so long, ffen it 'as ter put the mockers on and rest, and that's wen the fenrir will cotch up and kill it.” He shook his head somberly. “No, lass, yer do not want an 'orse.”
With an exasperated huff, Starr turned away from the dwarf. She was tempted to inform him that a well trained horse would not abandon it’s rider so easily. But she figured she’d run into the same problem with him as she did the dark elves, he wouldn’t listen to her.
They passed a couple more enclosures before coming to one where the great fenrir stood up and came over to them. The animal came right up to her and tilted it’s head side to side curiously. Starr couldn’t help the smile that crossed her face at the comical antics. The large fluffy red fenrir took a step closer to her and sniffed her interestedly before pushing it’s softly furred head under her hand in search of pets. An obviously happy whine filled the air as the tail of the fenrir started swinging back and forth slowly.
The dwarven girl giggled. “He chose yer, right, he's yors now. Yer'll find 'is saddle and 'eadstall over there.” She unlatched the gate and let the fenrir out.
The grizzled dwarf motioned for Starr to come to him, explaining that the fenrir would follow her. As he showed her how to properly saddle the animal and gave her a brief instruction on how to ride it, Shin continued looking for his own fenrir. As Shin approached the next to last pen, he was greeted by a ghostly gray face with a black snout. Reaching a hand out, Shin allowed the animal to sniff him as he looked over the fenrir. Strangely, the animal was two toned. The top line was a dark gray with a lighter gray underbelly and legs.
The fenrir pulled away and gazed calmly at Shin, showing neither fear nor aggression, before pawing at the gate to the enclosure. Shin slid the latch open, never breaking eye contact with the fenrir. As the fenrir stepped out, Shin ran his hand over the thick fur. Slowly, the tail swished back and forth a few times before stopping again.
Breathing a sigh of relief, the dwarven girl pointed out the fenrir’s saddle. As Shin informed her that he didn’t need help and had ridden fenrirs before, she glanced shakily at the fenrir. That one had viciously attacked several elves and they’d just about decided that it would have to be released back into the wild, or killed. The fact that it had chosen Shin just reinforced her idea that it was always better to let the animal choose the rider.
Once they’d gotten their fenrir’s and supplies, the two left the fortress, headed for Giran and then Heine, followed by one of the beaches.
It took them a little over a week to reach Giran. In that time the two had established a routine that was fairly harmonious. Conversation flowed relatively easily between them. But Shin had noticed that Starr made it a point to not let her guard down in regards to getting too close to him. For now though, he let it be. They’d had to camp several times during the trip and he knew she wanted a proper bed.
Entering Giran, they found a small little inn. Once inside, they spoke to the innkeeper who informed them that there was one room available and it had two beds. They took it.
As soon as they entered the room, Shin motioned Starr to the larger of the two beds. “Take that one.” Starr didn’t hesitate or question him. She simply flopped on the bed and promptly dropped into a deep sleep.
Shin stayed up for a while, sitting across the room and watching her as he sipped on some ale they’d brought to the room with them. They’d stay here for a couple of days and rest. Then they’d continue on to Heine.
He looked at the beds speculatively for a moment, debating on whether to simply leave well enough alone or push his luck. She’d been friendly enough so far… Eventually he decided to leave her alone for a while longer.
But as he attempted to lay on the empty bed, it squeaked. Loudly. Experimentally, he pressed his hand on the bed at various points and with varying degrees of pressure. It didn’t matter how soft he pressed, or where, the bed refused to be quiet, constantly squeaking.
With a sigh, he turned to her bed. It was large enough for two… With a shrug, he crossed to it and gingerly laid down next to her, trying not to disturb the bed too much. As the bed dipped with the added weight, Starr’s body shifted slightly and her back gently rested against his chest.
Shin stayed very still for long seconds, waiting to see if she woke up. When she didn’t, he relaxed, slowly allowing his arm to rest lightly on her side as he cradled her to him. Within minutes, he was fast asleep.
Starr however, was not. She’d woken up as soon as she’d heard the first squeaks from the other bed. She’d heard him trying to find a way to use the bed and knew that he’d only entered her bed when it became apparent that there was simply no way to use the second one. With a sigh, she willed herself to go back to sleep. As long as all he did was sleep, she could handle them sharing the bed…
