Kid awoke in the arms of Dominique. The sun was beginning to rise in the sky, peacefully letting out a shine along the ravaged world. Kid still felt sleepy, nuzzling his face into Dominique's neck, letting out a long breath as he felt the lovely warmth of her body radiate through her clothes. Kid didn't know it, but Dominique was already awake, she was simply relaxing with him in her arms. He felt her press a kiss to his cheek. He realized then that she must have been awake, smiling a little to himself. He pushed himself up off of her, looking into her face. She was smiling a little, looking back into his face, looking into his eyes. Kid smiled a little stronger and got up more, sitting back on his knees. "Time to get up, Dom." She sat up, looking into his eyes. She pulled him close again, closing her eyes, kissing him. He was a little surprised but he quickly relaxed, kissing her back. They kissed a few more times before Dominique slowly released him, Kid smiling a little as he opened the driver's side door to the car, stepping outside.
He helped Dominique get out, Dominique grabbing her gas mask as she exited the vehicle, pulling it on as she stood up outside. Kid closed the door to the car, stretching slightly right after, looking around. The wasteland was as it always was: dry, dusty, slightly windy, all rolled up in with a fair chance of death and dismemberment. He looked along the tents and stalls of the people outside the NCR, all hoping to sell something, looking eventually to Ronald's carts. It didn't look like anybody in Ronald's group were awake yet. He glanced over to Dominique before looking back to Ronald's carts. "Think we should wake them up?" He asked. Dominique shrugged. "Might as well. We need to start this eventually, right?" Kid nodded. He started walking towards Ronald's carts, Dominique following him. He noticed everyone sleeping in their carts, Ronald sleeping in his own, Tansy sleeping in her own as well, Mandy sharing one with the unnamed guard with the shaved head, Sheldon and Terra sharing one together, also. Dominique approached Ronald's cart, Kid walking over to Tansy's.
She was resting on her back in her combat armour, her helmet sitting by her side. The merchandise of her cart sat by her side, filling up part of the cart. Kid smiled and lowered his left hand to the right side of her face, slipping his fingers along her cheek, over her ear slightly. His palm against her cheek, he rubbed his thumb along her eyepatch lightly, gently touching it's leather. Tansy's other eye fluttered for a moment before opening, the image of Kid's face being the first thing she saw. She reached a hand up to her face, touching his hand, smiling faintly. "Good morning..." Kid smiled more, saying the same in return. She sat up a little, lowering his hand from her face. They didn't say anything for a few moments, but during that time, Tansy brought herself a little closer to the side of the cart, leaning against him as he stood near it. The left side of her face against his chest, she closed her one visible eye, smiling a little. Kid wrapped his arms around her shoulders, holding her close. A few more silent moments arose. "...I guess you've wondered why I wear an eyepatch?..." She asked.
Kid thought back. He couldn't remember a time where he ever wondered why, saying "Actually, no...I don't think I ever thought too much about it." Tansy smiled a little in embarrassment, saying "Well...Since I've brought the topic up, I might as well explain it, anyway..." Kid said "Okay...Tell me...Why do you wear it?" Tansy slowly said "When I was younger, I lived in a place called Klamath...I remember being a little girl, walking along in a dirty little red dress, just being all optimistic and happy...I heard some shouting from down the street, and, of course, I wanted to investigate..." Kid nodded. Tansy continued. "I saw Ronald...He was a lot younger then...I didn't know him at the time...He was just some trader...He was alone, he didn't have any guards with him like he does now...Three guys were giving him trouble, trying to rip him off...One of them shot Ronald in the stomach. Ronald pulled a magnum and shot the guy back, killing him. Another one tried shooting him, but Ronald shot him before he could. The third threw some sort of grenade at him, it looked like a green stick of some kind, I don't know....Ronald ran and ducked behind a broken-down car...The third started running, too...Ronald shot him before he could get away. I didn't know what was going on, so I kept my distance. The grenade went off. It was a nail grenade, dangerous thing...I was out of the normal radius of it, but a few nails flew around me anyway, and one of them hit me right in my eye..."
Kid took in a sharp breath of air. He didn't know what a "nail" was, but anything hitting someone in eye must have hurt, he knew that much. Tansy nodded. "Yeah, I know...Ronald saw me, I was crying and bleeding on the ground. He tried helping me out with some stimpacks, but it wasn't fixing my eye or stopping the pain. He took me to a doctor, and the doctor filled me with Med-X to numb the pain. He pulled the nail out, and he said that my eye was beyond repair, that it was totally destroyed. He cut it out of my head and threw it away. Ronald got pissed at him. He said that things could have been done to help my eye repair itself, he said that removing the eye and leaving me half blind was a stupid mistake the doctor made. He actually killed the doctor. Pissed some of the people in Klamath off, seeing as how he was the only doctor they had. They nearly ran him out of town. I went with him...Neither of us have gone to Klamath since." Kid felt sorry for Tansy. He wished he could have been there to protect her, pull her away before the nail hit her, something. "What about your parents?" He asked.
Tansy shrugged. "I knew my dad wouldn't care, too busy getting drunk all the time...And my mom?...Heh...Bitch was too busy whoring it up at the Bathhouse to ever give a shit about me, kinda like my dad..." Tansy's eye suddenly grew dark, clenching her hands slightly as she said "The way they'd shout at me when I was just trying to talk to them, just trying to get close to them, just trying to be their normal daughter, for Christ's sake...I started hating them after I left with Ronald...I wanted to go back there and strangle them with my bare hands...But...I never went back..." Kid heard Ronald getting up, Dominique waking everyone else. Kid softly said "I'm sorry about what happened t-to you...If I could have done something, I would have...." Tansy smiled a little, saying "Thanks for the thought, but...What happened, happened. You can't change the past any more than I can. Besides, living with one eye ain't so bad. Some men find eyepatches attractive...'Course, most of those guys are raiders and slavers, and frankly, those guys are a little too dirty for my tastes. Most of the little buggers could use a good bath."
Tansy chuckled lightly at her own words. Kid smiled a little. "Tansy! Get up outta your cart, time for us to make a game plan!" The unnamed guard called out. Tansy stopped leaning against Kid, jumping out of her cart, calling out "I'm up Sebastian, chill the fuck out!" The previously unnamed guard, whose name was now revealed as Sebastian, said "Pfft, I am chill Tansy, any chiller and I'd be in a coma!" Tansy made a bit of a face, not bothering to reply. Ronald was looking at the map he had gotten, most people standing near him, either looking at the map itself or listening to his words. Kid and Tansy approached, Kid picking up Ronald's words. "...I say we just check in the bottom-right corner of the map. That's the closest corner to us. We work our way along the grid, going all the way to the left, past Vault 15, the NCR, and Vault 13. We make our way past old Mariposa and into San Francisco. Then we make our way back along the grid to the right, then left, and then right. We'll then make it to New Reno, then Rister. Going up some more, we'll hit Redding in no time. Then Illust, then Vault City, The Den, New Arroyo, Klamath, and finally Gecko. Of course, there's no telling where we'll find the vault Kid's from, but if we work our way along every bit we can, we'll find it eventually."
Kid said "Ronald, I could probably save us some t-time. When I first woke up, I was only a few days from Illust. The vault's probably around there." Ronald nodded, saying "Well, that'll certainly save us some time. We could start our search just under Redding then, work our way up like my original plan, look through only the top half of the map. We'll have to look especially careful when we reach around Illust, like you said, the vault's probably around there." Kid nodded, everyone else nodding, as well. Ronald folded up the map, slipping it into a pocket in his pants. "Well, if that's that, then I guess we should start heading north. Because of your car, you'll probably reach Redding way faster than us. Either you or your girl know where Redding is?" Dominique blushed at Ronald calling her Kid's "girl". She said "I know where it is." Ronald said "Alright, good. Park the car about a day south of it and just relax. Wait for us, we'll get there within a week or two." Kid nodded, saying "Before we go, me and Dominique gotta eat some breakfast, we're st-starving. We'll have to stock up on food again, too." Ronald nodded, pursing his lips for a moment before saying "Yeah, some grub right about now would be nice. Alright, we'll all have some breakfast before we set out."
Kid grinned. He quickly walked back to the car, filling his pockets with caps from his bag of said currency, walking back over, the whole group going to a nearby building made of white brick, a sign out front identifying it as the "Rawhide Saloon". They all walked inside feeling rather famished, the each of them. After a good half hour, they all stepped back outside, Kid and Dominique heading for their Highwayman, Ronald and his group heading for their brahmin carts. They had all eaten enough to fill them up, Kid grabbing his bags of caps and supplies, walking back into the saloon. Ten minutes later he reappeared, the supply bag full of food once more, Kid putting both bags in the back of the Highwayman. Sitting down in the driver's seat, Dominique sitting beside him on the passenger's side, Ronald waved to him. "See you in a few days, m'boy!" Kid waved back. He started the Highwayman, feeling the form of the car vibrate slightly as it's engine roared into life. He quickly turned the car around from the outskirts, taking off like a speeding bullet, shooting up along the wasteland.
"Dominique and I reached Redding in about a week and a half. We're starting to run out of small energy cells to keep the car fuelled. It's okay though, we got where we needed to go. Dominique and I parked the car about a day south of Redding. We can see it on the horizon, but we're waiting for Ronald and the rest before we do anything. We have a bit of waiting ahead of us; it took us a week and a half to get here, and we were driving a car. Ronald and his group are riding brahmin carts, it's going to take them a while longer to reach us."
Kid stopped writing, Dominique giving him a pat on the arm, saying "Kid, look over there..." Kid looked over, looking out Dominique's window. A huge black mass on the distance was heading past them, heading south. Kid narrowed his eyes, closing his book. "What is it?" He wondered aloud. Dominique said "Raiders..." Kid looked at them. They looked like a horde of death, racing along a few kilometers out. Kid shook his head. There were tons of them, he couldn't even begin to count them. They looked like a huge black spot in-between the blue of the sky and the brown of the earth. "Are they the Scaled Hiss?" He asked. Dominique said "I think so...The Scaled Hiss is supposed to be huge, and I don't think I've ever seen a raiding group bigger than that..." Kid slowly said "They can't see us, can they?" Dominique said "Probably not, and even if they can, they're pretty far away...From that far, we probably just look like a rock or something."
Kid nodded. Dominique murmured "They're heading south...I wonder where they're going?..." Kid said "Think they'll run into Ronald's carts?" Dominique shrugged. "Hopefully not. The main group is heading south a little more to the east than Ronald's carts should be coming up from, though. To reach us, Ronald's group will have to go north at a bit of an angle to the west, and the horde over there is just heading straight south a little more to the east, so....Ronald's group should slowly be heading away from the path of the group." Kid nodded. The both of them watched as the group headed south some more, a few minutes going by.
"It's been three days since we saw the Scaled Hiss. It's night right now. Dominique has already gone to sleep. I'm not tired. I keep thinking about the situation that I'm in. If it wasn't for me, Dawn would still be alive. If I had just let her shoot Ace, everything would be okay. Why did I go against her? I should have seen that Ace was bad. She was a friend, but still. Dawn was so certain that killing Ace was the right thing, but I fucked everything up. Now things between me and Dominique are starting to heat up. She seems to really like me. Then there's Tansy, not to mention Mandy, but I never even really got close to Mandy in the first place. Dominique and Tansy are both nice, but...They can't replace Dawn. Ever since that day in New Reno, I've felt like there's been a piece of me missing, like a chunk was torn out of me. I wonder if Dawn loved me? She treated me better than just about anyone else, from what I could see...At least I have this picture of Dawn. I owe Rocky for that. With the picture, I can still see her smile. It makes me feel a little better to still be able to see her face."
Kid froze. The barrel of a gun had been pressed to the side of his head from outside the car, through the driver's side window. A soft, feminine voice said "You're a tough one to track down. Step out of the car, please. Don't do something stupid that we'll both regret, like pull a gun. I don't want to kill you just yet." Kid slowly closed his book, laying it on the dashboard along with his pencil. The shadowed figure stepped back from the door, pulling it open with one hand, saying "Come on, wouldn't want to wake the girl in the back. Let's do this real quietly." Kid still had his pistol tucked into the waistband of his pants, but before he pulled it he wanted to make sure that the figure's gun was no longer pointed at him. He slowly stepped out of the car, the figure saying "Good. Step over to the hood." Kid did as she bid, walking over to the hood of the Highwayman. The figure laid a hand on his chest, pushing him back gently, forcing him to sit on the edge of the hood. "Recognize my voice? Recognize my clothes from before?" She asked.
Kid shook his head. She was wearing a strange combination of a robe and armour, wearing gloves on her hands. In her right hand was an assault rifle Kid had never seen before. The hood of her robe was pulled up over her head, darkening her face to invisibility in the already deep lack of light in the night. "Your face...I recognized it as soon as I saw it in Rister. You're the boy from my dreams. I followed you to New Reno. I can never remember anything about my dreams when I wake up except your face. Your face is the only thing that doesn't blur into nothingness as soon as I open my eyes. Who are you? Why do I know your face?" Kid said "I don't know, I don't know who you are-" The girl angrily said "Bullshit! Don't tell me I just make up your face! I know it's nightmares and not pleasant dreams. I always wake up in a cold sweat, sometimes I wake up crying. I always thrash around in my sleep. Don't you tell me you don't know me!"
Kid slowly said "...I have nightmares, too. About a vault. Vault 17. I don't remember anything before waking up a few weeks ago. I just woke up in the wasteland, I really don't remember anything before th-that. I don't remember you, really...I don't know if you don't have any memories either, but I have nightmares, too..." The girl slowly lowered her assault rifle. She reached her clawed glove up to her face, pulling back the hood of her cloak. Kid was surprised at the look of her. She seemed to have some sort of makeup on. Her face was deeply pale, almost totally white. Her left eye was encircled in deep blue, even her eyebrow was invisible beneath her makeup. Black crisscrosses, like several letter "X"s, went around the blue circle, almost making it appear like a patchwork stitching of cloth. Her right eye had green eyeshadow to it, applied just to her eyelid, not to the rest of the skin under her eyebrow. The bottom of her right eye had a large green upside-down triangle of makeup, the top point of the triangle pointing down to nearly the middle of her cheek.
Her right eyebrow had black makeup covering part of it, some white covering the rest, the black makeup going in a large arc before coming down by the side of her eye. With part of her eyebrow being covered in the white makeup of her face, it made it seem as though part of her eyebrow was gone, but the black makeup trailing from the bit of her eyebrow that wasn't covered in white formed an eyebrow for her, albeit a thin and exaggerated one that made it look like she was angry. The tip of her nose was covered in pink. Her eyes were a deep shade of green and brown, the two colours mingling in her irises. She had fiery red hair, hanging down around her neck in soft, wavy strands. She looked to be his age, somewhere around the age of fifteen. "Recognize my face?" She asked. Kid shook his head. The girl looked down to the side, muttering "Probably have a hard time with my face paint...Doesn't matter..."
She looked up to his face. "I know you from somewhere. Don't tell me I don't." Kid raised his eyebrows, saying "Okay, alright." She shook her head softly. "...I woke up about a month ago. I was lying in the sun, half-buried under a pile of sand and rocks....I don't remember anything before that." Kid softly said "I don't have any memories either...I have the same problem..." The girl's bottom lip trembled, her hand releasing her assault rifle, letting it fall to the dusty ground by her side. She shut her eyes tight, raising her hands to her face, covering her eyes for a moment. Kid softly said "Hey, it's okay-" The girl snarled at him, moving her hands from her eyes, her right hand gripping his throat, her left holding her claws right up above his face, directly over his eyes. She pushed him back onto the hood of the car, getting over him. A few tears fell from her eyes right down to his cheeks. She felt the barrel of a gun press to her stomach. She glanced down. Kid had his pistol in his hands, pressing it up against her belly. She slowly released her grip on his throat, getting down off of him, standing in front of the hood again. "...Sorry..." She said softly. Kid sat up on the hood and pointed the barrel of his gun right at her forehead. "Tell me why I shouldn't kill you right now." He said dangerously.
She shook her head lightly, looking down to his legs. "...I don't have a reason to stay living..." She said. He narrowed his eyes, his finger steady on the trigger. She closed her eyes. A few seconds passed. "...I'm Kid. What's your name?" The girl slowly opened her eyes, looking up to him curiously. "...I don't know. I read a book about goddesses once, almost right after I first woke up. One of them was named Libitina, and I took the name for my own. I guess you could call me "Libby" for short, though." Kid lowered his pistol. "Well, Libby...I won't kill you. It sounds like you're in the same situation as me, so...We might be able to find some answers together. I know I come from Vault 17, I just don't know where it is. Do you know where you were when you first woke up?" Libitina nodded, saying "Well...Sit down with me, I can tell you what I remember...And...Thanks for not shooting me...I've never done anything that deserved mercy, so...Thanks..." Kid didn't say anything. She picked up her Steyr, the two of them sitting on the ground right in front of the car, their backs against the bumper. Libitina sat with her knees raised against her chest, holding her Steyr in her right hand. Kid sat beside her, their sides touching, holding his weapon in his right hand, as well. Libitina started her story.
"...I woke up, like I said, half-buried in sand and rocks. When I got myself out, I sort of wandered for a few hours before some slavers found me, two guys and a girl. They captured me and tied me up. They all raped me a few times, even the girl." At this memory, Libitina's face grew a bit pained. "They tortured and tormented me for a few days. They asked me why I never smiled. They asked me why I never enjoyed the sex. When I finally broke free, I killed the two guys, but the third, the girl, got away. I still remember her name...She called herself "Harlot Brimstone". I haven't seen her since then, but no matter. I remember putting on the shirt of the first's combat armour, grabbing one of their gloves and the second's suit of combat armour, running for another hour. My pussy was still coated in cum from another one of their damn "sessions". I saw a big factory in the distance, a couple of glowing barrels of green stuff around it. Just as I reached it, I remember being hit in the back of the head with something hard. I fell right into a puddle of the green stuff and blacked out. When I woke up, I didn't really feel any different, so I got up and ran into the warehouse. It was filled with boxes of weird costumes and buckets of face paint. I made my armour, sewing the plates of the first suit of combat armour into the robe, attaching the plates of the second over the robe, as well. I found my clawed glove in a chest near the front of the warehouse. I opened a few buckets of face paint and found a mirror in the back of the warehouse, too. I put this on."
Libitina whimsically waved a hand over her face. "I still keep a few jars on me to keep my makeup fresh." She added. "The first town I found was a place called Modoc. I was there for hardly a week before I left. I heard not too long ago that the place was burnt to the ground by some raider group, too. Pity. It was a nice place." She said a moment later. Kid slowly said "...Sounds like you've been through a lot..." Libitina smiled a little. "You ain't kidding. You don't know the half of it. Shit only got worse after that. I started noticing some weird growth appearing just above my pussy. It fully developed in about two weeks. I don't know what I am exactly, but I have a cock now." Kid's eyes widened. He looked over to Libitina. She smiled and raised her eyebrows. "Yeah. That's the reaction I usually get when people find out about it. I got a doctor to examine me. It's fully functioning, I have balls and everything. It was probably from falling in the glowing green stuff with that cum smeared all over my pussy, I don't know how that would make me grow a dick, though. I thought of cutting it off at first, but then the doctor told me that there are pretty much zero hermaphrodites in the wasteland now, same with albinos, conjoined twins, all the other real genetic freaks. Yeah, that was what he called me, a "hermaphrodite". If I kept it, I could enjoy a way of life unique to pretty much me, myself, and I. I kept it. Don't know what I'll do with it, though. Not a lot of people are open to the idea, I've asked around, seeing what people would think of a girl with a penis. I kind of have to trick people into sex and hide the thing. They usually find out eventually, though."
The girl softly laughed. "I can't believe I'm talking so freely about it...I've never told anyone before you..." She suddenly sobbed, tears running down her face, Libitina lowering her forehead to her knees. Kid didn't know what to think. She had what he had, along with a pussy? He had never heard of that before. He slowly reached an arm around her shoulders, bringing her a little closer, comfortingly holding her. She kept crying for around a minute, slowly calming down and looking up from her knees. Her makeup wasn't smudged at all. She looked over to him. "Thanks..." She said lightly. Kid nodded, taking his arm from her. Libitina sniffled before asking "So...You just woke up one day too, right?" Kid nodded. "Same as you." He said. She asked "Where was the first place you went to?" Kid took a moment to reply. "...Illust." He finally said when he replied. Libitina thought for a moment. "Illust is just across from Modoc. The vault that you...We...Came from...Wouldn't it be right between them, then? We both woke up and headed in different directions. Makes sense, right?" Kid nodded. "I guess." They both grew quiet. Libitina slowly and quietly said "...Again...Thanks for not shooting me..." Kid softly said "No biggie." Libitina stood up a moment later, saying "So...You're looking for the vault, right?....Vault 17...Hmm....Well....I'll start heading to the area between Illust and Modoc...I think I remember a bit of a mountain between the areas, anyway. Will you be heading there soon?"
Kid nodded. "As soon as I can. Right now I have to wait here for a bit longer. I'm waiting for a f-few friends." Libitina nodded. "I see..." She looked down into his eyes. For a moment, he couldn't help but notice the cuteness of her face. She was a cute girl, her makeup was a little strange, but he could see that underneath it, she was pretty. He spotted some crimson developing in her cheeks under the pale white face paint. She gulped almost nervously, saying "Um...Before I leave...Could I ask you for something?...A little favour?..." Kid stood up, saying "Sure." Libitina suddenly shook her head, blushing more and saying "Oh, nothing, never mind..." She turned and took a few steps away. Kid said "Hey, stop, what is it?" Libitina slowly said "It's...It's too embarrassing...I can't ask you for it...Besides, you're hanging around with a girl, so...If you're not in a relationship, you're at least straight..." Kid raised an eyebrow. "Is it something sexual?" He asked. Libitina nodded slightly. "It's just...Well...I've never really gotten to hold mine next to another guy's...I'm not interested in doing guys with my cock, that's pretty weird, but...I'd like to see how mine measures up to somebody else's...I've looked at plenty of cocks, but...I never got to actually hold mine next to another one..."
Kid narrowed his right eye, raising the eyebrow of his left. He didn't see anything wrong with her request, but then again, it didn't sound like it'd be a ton of fun, either. Libitina noticed his reaction, quickly and shyly saying "Yeah, I figured that was the reaction I'd get...Sorry for even asking...I know it'd probably be a weird thing to ask, I know it sounds pretty gay, even if I am a girl...Um...Well...Ah...Bye..." She turned and hastily walked off, heading to the northeast. Kid was about to speak when she disappeared into the darkness, shrugging lightly before turning back to the car. He was starting to feel rather sleepy, sitting down in the driver's seat of the Highwayman, finding a comfortable position and closing his eyes, drifting off to a deep sleep.
"It's been another few days. We still haven't seen Ronald yet. I haven't told Dominique about Libitina yet, and I don't think I ever will. It was just such a weird thing, how would I even start off my explanation? Anyway...Me and Dominique are just going to stay here for a bit longer. If Ronald doesn't show up in a few days, I'm going to leave with Dominique to check out the space between Illust and Modoc. Libitina should already be near there, so...From the sounds of things, the vault should be there. I can't really be sure, though. I'll have to see how things play out."
